Clayton & Patrick are here to reminisce about our former employer the now-defunct indpendent newspaper the Event Newsweekly, which ceased publication in 2001 but never did get a 'proper burial.'

We reach heretofore unattainable levels of awkwardness, delving into my sex life, "hammer time" at the Event, and Patrick's brow that is straining to go 'uni.' Working in a former chicken coop with sketchy restaurant, hair salon & 'massage parlor' sounds like the stuff of sitcom. We also hit a record high of 25 viewers on http://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-awkward-hour

Clayton was the final Editor of the Event, and Patrick wrote for the paper, and their innovations like "Barfly" column and the "Best of Beaver" edition when they 'went rogue' were either brilliant ideas or brought about the death of the paper, depending if you ask them or the mag's former publisher.

We are recording at the raucous Captain Captain artists studios, where we find that painters drink even more than writers! We enjoy surprise visits from artists Trent Call & Sri Whipple.

You'll want to hang in till the end of the episode when Clayton & I bust out some raps about Chris Buttars!

Catch Patrick Munger's art show opening on Gallery Stroll March 20 at High Life Salon, 245 E Broadway.

And check out his colorful line of shoes at www.lakeofsalt.com

Clayton works for utah.gov. Google him.

This episode dedicated to one of the former Event editors, the late Chris Joslin.

I still hang out with Philip & his girlfriend, how awkward is that?

Philip Bednarz is a great friend to talk to about psychological issues like depression and social anxiety that we have both gone through. He is also an incredibly funny guy, writes poetry and talks about philosophy, two subjects very essential to my life.

Beer+cold medicine+pizza=talk of poetry, what is reality, and higher beings that don't need the Internet to watch the show

Trent Harris is a vortex of awkward, a filmmaker who attracts and enjoys a lot of awkward and eccentric people, but doesn’t appear very awkward himself.

He’s a celebrated cult filmmaker for a list of works including Rubin & Ed, Plan Ten From Outer Space and his newest, Delightful Water Universe, which premiered November 1 at the Rose Wagner Theater in Salt Lake, complete with barbershop quartet, alpine horns and cocktail waitresses serving fruit punch. (It IS Utah).

He talks about working with awkward actors like Crispin Glover and creating some of the most awkward characters in indie films. His own life has been a road map of not necessarily awkward but eccentric experience all over the globe. He is less known for his documentary work, where he attempts to capture what he calls ‘naked reality’ that can be elusive, but also explains why he left a career in Hollywood and has a disdain for the unreal world of celebrities.

Delightfulwateruniverse.com
echocave.net

 <itunes:author>Brian Staker</itunes:author>

This is the first time I’ve interviewed someone I have never met in person before--it’s a whole new frontier of awkwardness! Gavin of Gavin’s Underground has been chronicling local Salt Lake indie or ‘underground’ scene and culture for a little over a year under the unlikely sponsorship of local CBS TV affiliate KUTV. He’s talked to all types of people, from local bands and DJs to artists and even models and actors. He must be starting to hit the bottom of the barrel, because he recently interviewed me.

My holiday episode, end of year bitch session and theme of ‘celebration’ of life and ‘friends,’ even and especially awkward ones online and off. We consider how Gavin became the hip local interviewer, at least we mean to until I go off on my usual self-absorbent tide pool of digression. A show record at over 3 hours, in 3 parts.

Once again, tech snafu as it takes me 15 minutes to figure out the reason no sound is going out is because I have the headphone jack instead of the microphone jack of the headsets plugged in. But it’s also a landmark! as the show is also my first live video feed:
www.ustream.tv/channel/the-awkward-hour

Gavin’s Underground interview with Awkward Hour:
http://community.kutv.com/blogs/games/archive/2008/11/30/3605330.aspx

Live caller: Albert Wang of IAO Projects Gallery

Photo from In Utah newspaper

Jann Haworth is a British artist who I met when she was working and teaching art workshops at the Sundance Institute and I wrote several stories on exhibits they had there, from photos by Dennis Hopper to an exhibit concurrent with a feature on filmmaker Derek Jarman. She was part of creating one of the iconic images of the 20th century, the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper album cover. Her own work has gone far beyond that, with shows of her multimedia works all across the globe.

Her parents were both artists, and as a child she visited the sets of films for which her father designed sets and met people like Marilyn Monroe & Arthur Miller; what impact did that have on the ‘Mom of Pop art?’

We dissect the stereotypes of the British, from uptight to eccentric: the awkward island?

And find out what she really thinks about the Beatles’ music!

“Artists have to be wreckless”
“It’s hard for stardust not to become dandruff.”

Music: ?

Jannhaworth.com

Episode 17 Pt 2 Jann Haworth "The Awkward Island"

Albert Wang’s IAO Projects gallery & website are the most recent attempt to try to deal with the awkward life of operating a gallery in SLC. He brings a New York sensibility to the Salt Lake gallery scene. He has introduced people like stick figure artist Circlegal & German multimedia artist & musician Sybill Kalff.

I wonder can religious people like Mormons Wang & Circlegal also be artists? Simply because art IS my religion in some ways.

The show went out live on www.ustream.tv/channel/the-awkward-hour to empty ears, as all will be from now on. Call ins include IAO artist qi peng & Andrew Wrigley, whose awkward artistic practice is drawing on marble with graphite.

My energy starts to flag a bit at the end, but talk of pubic hair paintings and stick figure porn perks up my attention.

Andrew Wrigley: Awkwardness is a double-edged sword, that accompanies the thrill of taking risks: “try to pull the airplane out of the nosedive before it hits the ground.”

Callers: qi peng, Artist Andrew Wrigley, Len Burke, Philip Bednarz

www.IAO-projects.com

Qipeng-art.blogspot.com

awrigley.com

Songs: The Precinct, “Departure,” “Tick Tick Boom”

Hearing it at the same time isn't distracting a bit! But live puppies on video are.
My daughter Mollie writes in on chat.
I was sick over the Thanksgiving weekend & just barely able to do this show.
We compare Salt Lake & St. Louis on the awkward meter. Former co-worker & local Salt Lake musician with Latex Premonition & Handjob Involved.

Mostly talk about musical faves, but also I recite how I've been in an abysmal mood after last week's failed taping attempt. I have to make myself laugh with jokes from South Park guys movies. Also shopping at Walmart with tweakers & mammoth sweats.

Is music better free or at a price? Todd wants to take on the music industry, I want to turn a buck. And deeper, I note 'the sword of awkwardness cuts both ways.' It's my lemons & this show is lemonade, but sometimes 'not all it's cracked up to be.' Espec when you're a single guy. Finally, I lose my show anxiety & enter the nirvana of total non sequitur.

Music: Latex Premonition: "I Once Knew a Dreamer," "Walking Home From School"

Todd Roberts:

scatologicalliberationfront.org

myspace.com/cravinglovely, /lagrange2, /latexpremonition

slowsteps.livejournal.comMy email: stakercast@gmail.com for comments, updates etc.

Leif also talks about the awkward life of being the protagonist in local comic book "Let's Go to Utah."

LetsGotoUtah.com

This episode dedicated to David Foster Wallace.

My email is stakercast@gmail.com, since Leif hummed over me when I tried to give it out.

This is especially remarkable because she came all the way from Ohio and somehow infiltrated our little local scene. Writing for various publications, starting with the late Event Newsweekly up through SLUG Magazine and City Weekly, and drumming her way into our hearts in seemingly every local indie band at one time or another, she seems to be someone who still isn’t bitter or cynical about the ‘scene’ like so many people. Under his management the store has become one of the few remaining businesses to both weather the economic and political storms that have not only taken many locals under in the path of national chains but rendered Main Street somewhat of a wasteland. As ‘whip-cracker’ she has done much to support local bands, artists and even charities with events like Sabbathon. As a writer and Associate Editor at SLUG I always knew my ideas would be listened to and considered as contributions to the magazine. She took SLUG Magazine from being a well-loved local punk zine to being a nationally-known magazine not only in the realm of indie music but also into subjects like politics and extreme sports. As ‘whip-cracker’ she has done much to support local bands, artists and even charities with events like Sabbathon. As a writer and Associate Editor at SLUG I always knew my ideas would be listened to and considered as contributions to the magazine. Even before she worked at SLUG under Gianni Ellefsen she was an extremely talented photographer, and still exhibits from time to time.

Musical interludes by George St. John and Hew Mun

 slugmag.com

I met him over twenty years ago, not long out of college, and saw his homemade poetry magazine Local Scribble and submitted some work to it. His love and skill with poetry and music has inspired me enormously. Then I started to go to poetry readings and got immersed in the worlds of Salt Lake’s poetry crowd and the artsy scene in the city. Back in the day, there was always a circle of people that met at Dee’s house to drink beer and watch movies. Through him I met Bob Moss and Crispin Glover. Knowing Dee Wolfe has opened up my world in a lot of ways.

www.themoonsonground.50megs.com

I met him when he was working at the same employer as me, about a year and a half ago. He's the kind of person that I couldn't think of anyone there who didn't like him.

David Smith and I met almost twenty years ago when we both used to go to City Arts Poetry readings in downtown Salt Lake City, where we both live. In the course of that time we’ve hung out at a lot of concerts, went out to Burning Man twice, and I attended numerous Wiccan festivities that he helped coordinate. We were even roommates for several years, and I can recommend him as a great sharer of space to anyone. I’ve come to admire him for his adventurous spirit in traveling all over the globe and trying things like skydiving, that I might be too awkward to try.

myspace.com/utdave23
