Talk Bowling #105 - To Loft Or Not To Loft, How To Add More Bowling Ball Revolutions

Q - Hi Tony and John,
I am wondering how to determine whether to loft the ball on to the lane or to lay short for best result. I usually release ball at fowl line and let ball roll long thru the oil to breaking point. I use the dots at fowl for releasing points rather than arrows which allows me to keep my head down and better follow thru. I have found when I loft ball 1 or 2 feet out on lane I seem to lose revs and lift on ball and it slides out past breaking point and then I start to turn my wrist over too soon. Laying ball short allows me to stay under ball and get more revs and better reaction. I may have answered my own question but watching tony bowl with different layouts, he sometimes lofts the ball on release and sometimes lays shorter. Does the layout make a difference on release? Thanks Ed

A - This is a great question and topical considering the addition of Mike Jones to our bowling ball reaction videos. The answer is (as it almost always is) it depends. If there is enough oil in the heads, then usually getting the ball onto the surface sooner is better. I personally feel this helps with your timing as well, and keeps you more consistent. Some people either naturally loft the ball, or do it to help clear the heads. Clearing the heads is important if there is not enough oil, or if the heads are burnt up from high rev players.

However, if there is plenty of oil on the lanes, you will experience what you are describing. You will lose that 1-2 feet of time for the ball to setup which will cause it to push further down the lane. And if you haven’t practiced this, your timing will almost definitely be off, decreasing your rev rate and/or speed.

Q - I currently throw a Storm Furious, which I know is supposed to be a fairly aggressive ball. This is not the case for me... The reason, however, is my fault. I can't get nearly as many revolutions on the ball as most bowlers out there.. Unless the lanes are really dry, I can't get nearly as much hook on it as other bowlers who throw the same ball. Save from buying an even more aggressive ball, what are some things I can do to get some more rotation on the ball?

A - Ah, one of the great questions asked by bowlers all the time. How do I get more revolutions and hook. The biggest deterrent to bowlers hook potential is the same as the reason for amateur golfers not being able to hit the big drives. It all comes down to timing and balance at the fowl line. The rest should fall into place. So the answer is Practice, practice, practice.

Some keys to increasing your rev rate:

Practice your balance, you don’t want to be trying to gain balance at the fowl line. When you are not balance, your focus during release becomes “I need to balance so I don’t fall”, which will take revs off the ball.
Follow through. If you are anything like me, once the ball is off your hand, you stop your arm. I have worked hard on this. You may want to over exaggerate the motion and pretend you are trying to swing your hand all the way back to your shoulder. This is one of the easiest things to remedy, yet it feels so funny for most of us.
Think “be aggressive”. I was often told this before league when I would ask Tony for advice before going to league. When you are just getting the fowl line, don’t just get the ball off your hand, think I need to be aggressive and swing my hand through the ball and follow through.
Don’t try to increase revs by twisting your wrist or arm, or coming over the top of the bowling ball. It’s easy to think that if I rotate my hand around the side of the ball that I will increase revs, but it just isn’t true. You are decreasing speed and adding too much side roll.

Q - Sometimes whenever i bowl on open bowling condition after a kids birthday party i have trouble making it back to the pocket. I want to say its oil carry down but im unsure on how to fight that. do i need an early rolling bowling ball with pin down or just a ball with a stronger surface. im a 180 average bowler mid revs, 13mph ball speed. i use a mission 2.0 and a critical theory.

A - It sounds like what you’re describing is carry down. Typically open bowling conditions get this way after open bowling occurs. Especially kids birthday parties because most of the bowlers are using house balls which will cause more oil to carry down the back part of the lane.

With your ball speed you would want to find something that will be cleaner in the font part of the lane then the 2.0 and Critical Theory. Something shiny and pinned to get down the lane with a more angular motion would suit this condition the best. What you are trying to do is have the ball store up as much energy as possible so it can cut through the oil down lane.

Q - When the lanes are fresh it is very easy to get lined up and strike. What would you suggest when the right side is completely burned up and you are forced to play from the fourth arrow or even further left? I have heard of taking the bump out of your game but how??

A - Practice, practice, practice. Getting comfortable playing that deep is something that you have to practice to feel ok in here. Really what you are trying to do is migrate left on the lane to find more oil. Mentally I envision the lane turned on the angle I am forced to play. So instead of thinking the gutter is to the right, I mentally angle t entire lane so in my minds perspective the lane is the exact same as when Im playing up 10 just turned at a different angle.

Q - Hello Tony and John!

There are a lot of balls out there which are good for dry lanes. I really need a ball for dry lanes that has a good weight block for more carry. Which ball do you guys use for dry lanes and is it better to use urethane for dry lanes instead of reactive resin. Thanks for the tip!!!

A - You are correct, there are many to choose from. This is really going to depend on how dry. If you are talking about a Saturday morning where the lanes were not oiled from Friday’s leagues and after the youth group has bowled, then you may want a plastic bowling ball. However, you are probably referring to at least a little oil on the lanes, in which case my go to bowling ball is still a Brunswick Slingshot.

Q - I bowl with an ebonite cyclone but i am looking for a bowling ball with more hook on the back end. what ball will be good? My average is a 150, I bowl on Medium oiled lanes, and my speed is medium. I also bowl with a Brunswick Slingshot

A - I’m sorry I could not give you credit. I know your email address is SeeNoEvil... but there was no name for me to put in our show.
As for your question, I would like to talk about our Perfect Scale®. The Perfect Scale® can be used to compare the hook ratings of several bowling balls from all manufacturers. For example, the Cyclone is listed at 167.20, so you are going to want something a little higher. The slingshot is also a great bowling ball, and rates 157.60.

You can sort the bowling balls on bowlingball.com, by perfect scale. For example, from high to low, or low to high. And then start to decide how much hook you want. There are many other factors, do you prefer asymmetric, or symmetric cores? Solid, Pearl, or Hybrid coverstocks?
My (John Congdon) personal suggestions would be any of these. Roto Grip Critical Theory, Brunswick Nexus f(P) Pearl, or the soon to be released DV8 Hell Raiser Revenge.

Q - How do I adjust to longer and shorter oil patterns. I know the difference between them but I would like your thoughts on how to adjust.
A - James thank you for your question and your support of our show, we really appreciate it.
Outside of the obvious answer of making sure the ball you are throwing matches up to the condition you are bowling on, you can try any of the following on these oil patterns:

1. Adjust where you are looking on the lane. For a shorter oil pattern where your ball will want to start to hook sooner adjust your target further down the lane. This will create more projection and usually a little more ball speed. For the longer patterns, do the opposite, bring your target closer to you to assist in getting the ball down on the lane quicker and giving the ball more time to read the oil pattern.
2. Adjust your hand/wrist position. Flattening your hand out on the shorter pattern will create less hook and assist in getting the ball down the lane. On the longer pattern try and cup your wrist more and get the ball rolling mor off your hand to create more roll and hopefully turning into more movement on that pattern.
3. You can also play around with adjusting your starting position on the approach. Moving up for some people causes them to slow down their approach and that translates into slower ball speed giving your ball more time to hook. Moving back on the shorter pattern can adjust your approach and ball speed upwards creating moe length.

Q - I use a 16lbs bowling ball when i bowl. what is the different between a 15lbs and a 16lbs bowling ball when it comes to bowling?

A - We receive questions like this quite often. The truth of the matter is back in the day (say pre 2000), you wanted a heavier bowling ball that could provide more driving power into the pin deck. However, with today’s technology, they are finding out that it is not the complete story. You still want the heaviest bowling ball you can control, but you don’t have to have a 16# bowling ball to succeed.

Nowadays, you can change your bowling ball weight to also help you change your speed. I don’t know how advisable this is, but it may work for some bowlers.

Q - hello. my name is Zack. i throw 14 &15 pounds, about 16 mph with higher revs. i have a 5 step approach and start at the very back dots of the approach. i average 182, i was wondering if i could get more accuracy my moving up. or maybe going to a 4 step approach? Or do you have any other tips on becoming more accurate?

A - Accuracy will not be judged by where you are starting on the lane per se. Accuracy is mainly influenced by consistency and balance at the foul line. As long as you are walking the same way consistently, aren’t too jerky in your movements, follow through, and stay balanced at the line, you should have good accuracy.

Going from a 182 average up to 200’s is not an easy task. I stayed in the 180’s for a few years, which was a bummer because I work for bowlingball.com. I “should” be a better bowler.

The true secret in moving above a 180 average bowler is to make your spares. I bet you are leaving at least one open frame every game, causing your average to be in the 180’s. That was my problem. Practice your spare shooting and watch your average increase.

Don’t worry too heavily about a 4 or 5 step approach. Be comfortable with one for now. Changing from one to the other can have negative side effects.

Q - I am wonder what happens to your bowling balls if you leave it in your truck in cold weather and hot weather. Thank you very much for your time.

A- You’re welcome for our time. :)
The worst case scenario is that your bowling ball will crack in half. Bowling balls are made of multiple pieces, from the inner core and/or outer core to the coverstock. As these pieces heat and cool, they may expand and contract. Because these materials have different coefficients of expansion they could cause the ball to crack.

This is limited to being outside in extreme environments. I have had this happen to a bowling ball that was just sitting in a closet of an unused bedroom. However, outside temperatures can fluctuate more easily, causing cracking to happen.

The other scenario is that ball may “leak” oil from the coverstock if it is a reactive type material ball. In this case the pores on the cover open up from the heat and the oil that has soaked into the shell starts to bleed out.

Q - What's the importance of releasing the ball at or around the foul line over lofting?

A - There is no importance of it really. The importance is only in your consistency in doing either of them. Or using each method when necessary. Lofting will help you overcome hooking too early. While a smooth release onto the surface may be more repeatable. In the end, consistency always wins. If you can repeat shots, and make minor adjustments, your game will improve.

Talk Bowling #99 - Should I Insert My Thumb All The Way Into The Bowling Ball?

Q - Hi,
I just started bowling a couple months ago and I got my own fingertip ball around 3 weeks ago. I was just wondering if the thumb should be inserted all the way in the hole or should it be around halfway past your first knuckle? Also, I think if you guys posted a slow motion of a correct release it would really help people that are started to learn how to hook like me. Thanks for all the help and keep up the good work!

A - Welcome to our sport. We hope you are enjoying it so far. Bowling is so much different when you switch from it being a fun date night or family event to bowling competitively. Most people that go just for fun want to break 100. That is a great goal for beginners, but once you start taking it seriously, your goals become higher.

To address your question, your thumb should be inserted all the way into the thumb hole. You risk injuring yourself if you don’t. You said you got your first fingertip ball, so I am hoping you got it drilled for yourself, and not just a used fingertip ball. The ball needs to fit your hand so that your thumb fits snugly and comfortably.

We may try to find a slow motion camera at some point. But for now, the way we describe the release to new bowlers is to vision yourself throwing a football underhand to a friend with a good spiral. Go get a football and try it. On the backswing, you keep your hand under and behind the ball, during release you slightly rotate your hand, and you follow through. At no point in time, does your hand get on top of the ball, nor does the back of your hand see the sky.

Talk Bowling #98 - Thumb Slug or Insert?

Q - Hi, i had a question regarding thumb slugs and thumb inserts. would u recommend a thumb slug or a insert. i have used both of them i like the insert a little better. My main problem is that on my backswing is i bend my knuckle on my thumb and it tends to stay in the ball a little longer than needed. So i just was wondering if u would recommend a slug or a insert, and also if u had any other recommendations that could help this problem i would appricaite it thanks.

A - Actually there should be little difference between the two. We should actually address your thumb problem. Bending the knuckle of your thumb is a sign that you are squeezing the ball and your thumb hole is too big or you could have too much reverse pitch. You are afraid the ball is going to come off your hand if you relax your grip.

You need to work on this. What helped me was using protecting tape. For me, this helps my thumb slide out of the bowling ball easier, but also allows me to have the thumb hole tighter. It sounds contradictory, but on the back swing there isn’t enough force for the ball to come off my thumb. During release, there is plenty of it to let your thumb come out cleanly without the need to squeeze.

I would have your thumb hole size checked along with your pitch. Pitches can be changed easily with a thumb slug so you can play around with this until you find something you like and something the solves your squeezing issue. Keeping your thumb tighter and using some kind of tape is another really good solution.

Question from Sean D: Hey guys, first I would like to say that I have recently come across your site and its great to see that there is a place to get the kind of advice you guys are giving to people. With that said I have a question. How do I begin to build an effective arsenal? I have a bunch of bowling balls in my closet, but I'm not really sure if I have any "drivers" in there(stealing the golf bag analogy). I feel like I have an" iron" or two and a few "putters". Most of the balls I wind up with are hand-me-downs but I really want to get a couple of new pieces of my own. Right now I have the first black widow, an ultimate inferno, blue elite alien, virtual gravity, avalanche, c-system 4.5 and a mission. The only balls I got new are the first 3 and I only really use the first two. All the others I have either not thrown or have been unimpressed by them. Some of that may be my fault since I usually just plug the thumb on the hand-me-downs and just bowl over the original layout, but I really feel like I don't have very many options on some league nights since I only bring and use my widow and inferno. Where do I go from here? Do I invest in redrilling some of those balls I have and get new stuff, or just scrap the stuff in my closet and start fresh? Thanks. Sean D.

A - Well there’s a lot to discuss here. Let’s start with the golf analogy. While it is a very good one, you have to be careful to not take it too literally. Yes, everyone hits their driver further than there 5 iron (hopefully). However, in bowling the “driver” could very different for each person. Actually your “driver” could be different bowling balls depending on the lane conditions. Long story short, there isn’t a single best answer. Many people are going to say your Virtual Gravity is the best “driver” out there.

That being said, unless the people you received the hand-me-downs from have the same Positive Axis Point (PAP) as you, the ball will roll differently than what the drilling was meant for.

Arsenals can vary depending on your goals. Are you just bowling league? Then you may only have one arsenal. Are you going to bowl tournaments? You may have different arsenals based on the expected lane conditions. Or you can just take all of your bowling balls to every tournament, which may be overkill.

My suggestion, make sure the layouts and your bowling balls match to your game. If not, plug and redrill. It looks like all of your bowling balls are very aggressive. You may want to consider some more mid range for when the lanes are drier, or the lanes break down. Consider some of these: Brunswick Slingshot, Roto Grip Bandit, Brunswick Lethal Revolver, Some of the Tropical Storms, DV8 Misfit.

Q - Hi John and Tony,

I know that there are many wrist devices available to bowlers these days. Most of them seem to offer support for the wrist/forearm and some also provide assistance with getting the wrist/hand into a cupped position (in varying degrees).

However, I've no problem cupping the ball. I find that my difficulty lies in keeping my wrist neutral unless I am really concentrating on doing so. Is there a wrist device out there that will keep my wrist/hand from assuming the cupped position?

A - Great question. As you know, most bowlers have the opposite problem, keeping their wrist cupped. The adjustable wrist supports usually have a strap that go around the palm of your hand to help hold it to the support. This should help hold your wrist straight when you flatten the device out.

This also helps you find middle ground in your cupping too. You have more than just cupped or flat, but maybe you need something in between. The Brunswick PowerKoil is a great option, and there are many others as well.

For this type of concern, you will definitely need a support that goes up the back of your hand, and not just around the wrist or forearm.

Q - Hi my brother and I just got the Vise IT in our equipment. The cool thing about it is that we both have the same pitch, span, and fingers. The only thing is that he had a larger thumb than me. My questions is during League or Tournament is it OK that we can use each others bowling balls or even the same one during the competition.

A - I am glad that you are happy with the Vise IT. For those that do now know, IT stands for Interchangeable Thumb, and is Vise’s system to let you have the same thumb hole feel in every ball. It is similar to the Turbo Switch Grip. We are proponents of these systems, as it is very important to have the same feel from ball to ball. And this is one way of achieving that. If you have us drill your new bowling ball, we can install either the Vise IT, or the Turbo Switch Grip for you.

You can also have multiple inserts made so that instead of adding tape, you can just change the insert, especially if your thumb swells and/or shrinks a lot during competition.

The only reason we don’t use one of these systems is because of we would end up wasting quite a bit of the inner pieces. Since we shoot a video for so many different balls, it is cheaper for us to use a thumb mold. Putting the inner pieces in for just a video shoot doesn’t make sense for us.

As for your competition question, there is nothing in the rule book that prohibits multiple people from using the same equipment. You will only annoy the people you are bowling with/against if it ends up causing a delay in the game because you are waiting for the ball to return.

Q - Hi. I am in somewhat of a dilemma. I bowl in leagues year round and i also have started bowling in tournaments. On a recent trip to my state USBC tourney I found myself in a bad spot. My equipment was too agressive for the drier lane conditions. I have a Brunswick C(system)alpha max, Track 715T, and Track 718A and a plastic. My question is what ball would be a good choice? I have been doing some research online and its looking like maybe a Hammer vibe, Columbia freeze, Track 300C,and Brunswick Slingshot. Could you help me please? I have heard that after the 300C gets a few games on it, it starts to hook more(which i dont want to happen). I love the Track equipment. But, I am not locked into only having Track. If there is any advice you may have it would be very much appreciated.

A - Hi Rick, it does appear that all of your equipment is aggressive, and meant to have some oil underneath it. You are looking in the right area for a bowling ball that will fit into your arsenal. Relating this to golf, your bag has a driver a couple of fairway woods, and a putter. You need some irons and wedges in that bag.

From my (John Congdon) personal experience, I really like the Slingshot and the new Roto Grip Bandit for this spot in the arsenal.

There is nothing more frustrating than dry lanes where all of your equipment is too strong.

Talk Bowling 93 - Baffling Lane Conditions

Q - I recently bowled on a particularly challenging lane condition that completely baffled me. Any ball (even plastic) left of 10 at around 25-30 feet would check hard left no matter where I released it on the approach. In several games the only look I could find was standing 39 and looking 13 at the arrows with a stronger ball. The lanes were synthetic the first 15 feet or so, and wood the rest of the way, and after several visits I'm wondering if that is why I'm having such a problem. My first question is how would you attack such a lane differently than a lane that is completely synthetic? My second question is if I were to bowl for an extended amount of time (like a tournament or something) on this condition, how the heck would I adjust from that spot with the weird check point just to the left? Just hope to be able to downshell? Thanks for all you do, Michael

A - Interesting challenge. It sounds like you are describing a reverse block type of pattern, where the middle is dry and the outsides a super wet. This would be true if in your scenario of standing 39 and throwing to 13, had you pushed the ball to say 9 and it just continued sliding into the gutter, or hold and say take out just the 10 pin.

These patterns require very accurate shot making. Usually you want to know where the oil is, and it sounds like you knew it to be right of board 10. Now you want to make your delivery straight up boards 9 or 10 taking advantage of the oil there. You will need to continue moving, as you will burn that oil up quickly.

This is where practice comes in. You should not be worrying about striking, or your score. You go to the lanes with the intention of trying a different shot. Pick a board on the lane, say the 1 board at the arrows. That is extreme, but if you can roll a ball straight up the lane along the gutter, you will have the confidence to hit any spot on the lane when you want/need to. And confidence is an important skill to have in any situation (in sports, business, or life).

Talk Bowling 92 - My Bowling Ball Rolls Out, Can I Fix It?

Q - I had a ball drilled at a local pro shop and I had an idea that my coach showed me as far as a drill pattern that would be good for what I was looking for (which was a bit more hook for wetter lanes) but instead of drilling it the way I wanted he drilled it a way that he thought would be best for me. Now this ball rolls out at the end instead of the strong finish I wanted. What should I do? Should I order another thru you and spend the money again or can it be fixed?

A - Stephen, your wording leads me to more questions. Is your coach your ball driller? Were you clear with the ball driller about the pattern you wanted?

It is very important to be very clear with the person drilling your equipment. Bowling ball drillers often think they know more than they actually do. And they deal with many people that have no clue about ball drilling, so they just do “safe” drilling.

So, my suggestion would be to know as much as you can, and ask to see the layout before the holes are drilled. If your ball driller thinks you are wasting his/her time, then you need a new ball driller. Make sure you know what you are talking about before you ask them to change something, and have a good reason for making a change to their layout choice. This is their art, and if you ask them to change something without a good reason, they will take it very personally.

Now, about your current bowling ball question. You can plug the ball and have it redrilled. Or if it works on your typical house shot, and you want a ball for the “wetter” lanes, than you may want another bowling ball. Because of different layouts, some people will have 2 or 3 of the same bowling ball, just drilled differently.

Talk Bowling Episode 91 - How Do I Deal With a Bump at the Base of My Thumb?

Q - I have a question about how to deal with my bowling thumb. At the base of my thumb, I have some sort of bump inside that I can feel when I put my thumb into the ball. I can move it around based on how I grip the ball and it is quite distracting. I normally have to pause during my stance and adjust my hand until it gets into a comfortable position. If I do not do that, the bump would cause the grip to change throughout the arm swing which is what I do not want to happen. Do you have any recommendations on how to deal with this, like with a different type of drilling or insert? I use a thumb insert.

A - What you are feeling can be something very common like a callus at the base of your thumb. If this is what it is then I would suggest having your pitch and hole size checked by your pro shop. This is fairly common and usually seen in people that bowl quite a bit and do not use a lot of bevel on their thumb hole. I would also have them check to make sure you have enough bevel at the top of the hole.
As always I will say we are not doctors and if you think this is something else not caused by your grip or thumb hole you should see a doctor for their opinion.

Talk Bowling #90 - Is a Thumb Callus a Sign of a Bad Release?

Q - I watched your taping video of the thumb and noticed you primarily cover the palm side and back side of the thumb. I've started to develop a callus on the side closer to the index finger where it wouldn't get taped. Would this just be a sign of a bad release?

A - I don’t think it’s a sign of a bad release. It could be a sign of incorrect drilling. Let me stress could, because that may not be the case. Taping your thumb hole is all about fine tuning the fit of your thumb hole. Your thumb has a tendency to shrink or swell from day to day, even shot to shot.

Taping the front and back of thumb are the most common approaches. I personally use protecting tape on my thumb. It is mainly wrapped from the front to back, but if you look closely, you will see that the back is actually more to the outside of my thumb because I have the same issue. This helps me protect the side of my thumb from getting torn up, and improves my fit and release.

Don’t be afraid to try different techniques to help yourself bowl better. There is nothing wrong with it, if it works for you.

Q - Does having a ball plugged and redrilled effect how the ball will react much?
A - This is a tricky question. Pending hole size and depth it very well could alter the reaction slightly. If the holes go deep enough they can remove parts of the core, affectively changing the overall shape of the weightblock. Now this will not completely change the reaction from one end of the spectrum to the other, but it can alter it slightly. The best thing to do with a plugged ball is use a determinator to locate the bowling balls PSA (preferred spin axis) and make sure you locate the current Center of Gravity. The CG placement is just to make sure the ball is legal by USBC standards. Once you locate the PSA, you can use that point and the hanger Pin to lay the ball out for you. Another thing to remember is surface prep. Make sure you use the recommended method to finish the ball back to out of box surface. Otherwise the ball will not perform the way it once did.

Q - I have a question regarding surface prep on bowling balls. All of the balls on your site are labeled with the oob finish. That being said, I noticed some balls are labeled as just polished, while others state that they have a sanded grit surface with polish (ex) 1500 grit polished. What I am curious to know is what is the typical surface prep on a ball that is labeled as Polished and nothing else. An example of this is the BreakPoint Pearl and Clutch Pearl. Both balls are labeled as polished. I have both of these balls and I have been unable to find any info on the surface prep under the polish for them. Any info would be great.

A - This is a great question. Unfortunately with many manufacturers the term “Polished” will vary greatly. Some manufacturers use different polishing grits to achieve their out of box finish and others use a physical sanding device like Siaair or Abralon. To be quite honest, there is no one simple answer for this question. For the 2 bowling balls that you are questioning, the Clutch Pearl is listed as 2000 grit and polished and the Break Point Pearl is only listed as polished in their catalog. I would assume it is either 2000 grit polish or finished with one of their finishing compounds. We will look in to this and get it updated on the site as soon as possible. Q - I am looking right now for a ball that can react better on longer lane oils I would also like the ball to have a smoother roll through the front and a strong backend reaction. Is there a ball you can recommend for me? I am a currently holding a 187 average in my Saturday Sport League and about to bowl in a PBA Experience League. I throw the ball around 15-16 mph and i my rev rate is around 325 rpm. Thank you for your time.

A - Nicco you are looking for two different balls. On a longer pattern you would want something that will be steady strong reaction from start to finish. No abrupt change in direction just really strong rolling. In this case I would suggest any of the newer products that offer a duller finish out of the box. Brunswick has the alpha-max, Storm has the Nano and Roto has the Theory. Remember that you should also use a specific layout based on your PAP to lay these balls out for the reaction you want.

Your other question was for a ball that was smooth through the heads with a strong backend. You may be able to achieve this with the same products only drilled different and a shinier cover finish. You could also look at balls like the Bank Pearl from 900 Global, the Inifinite Theory from Roto Grip or the Boomerang from Lane #1.

Remember on conditions like that it is very tough to have a ball to cover a variety of ball motions and lane conditions

Q - Hi, I just started bowling on a league this year.I have been practicing a lot. Recently I had someone working with me,he told me to bend my knees and lean forward a little. Which seemed to help. But I also was told to stand right of the center dot to start, but my ball seem to go left.So I try to stand to the left of the center dot and I seem to bowl better. I am a right handed bowler,what should I do?

A - This is where practice helps. Where to start is entirely dependant on many pieces of information, the bowling ball, your release/speed/timing, lane conditions, etc... Starting in a certain spot on the lanes is just that, a start. You need to watch the ball reaction and make adjustments from there. Practice will help you know your equipment.

Some things you read will suggest during practice, you throw your bowling ball to see the oil pattern, rather than trying to strike. There are different ways to do this, but you are trying to get a sense of how long the oil pattern is, and does it seem heavier in the middle, on the outside, or more even.

From this point, you will adjust left and right. Just because you were told to start right of the center dot, doesn’t mean you should stay right of it. Maybe that day, the person working with you saw the way the lanes were playing, and that is what you needed to do. Maybe that person didn’t really know what you needed to do, and that was just a guess on their part.

Q - Hello. I’ve been bowling for 5yrs now and have seen my average increase every yr. and I was wondering, as your game increases do you need to change how your have your bowling balls drilled. I was wondering if a 3-4 pin distance be good.

A - As you get better, you will want to drill your bowling balls to react a specific way. Meaning, if your current bowling ball starts rolling up in the midlane, you may want to get another ball and drill it specifically to go longer before hooking. You may want a bowling ball to play “up the ditch”, and another that you can use to hook the entire lane. You need to worry about pin distance when you are going be very specific about “I want my ball to do …...” From there, you need to know what the ….. is and then decide on the pin distance that will get you to that point. Many bowlers get a pin distance stuck in their head, and get very upset when the ball doesn’t react as expected.

Q - I've been a loyal customer of bowlingball.com for five years. I always look there first for the latest in ball releases at excellent prices, as well as the most thorough ball guides and comparisons.

The only ball type missing from my arsenal is one that's designed to handle heavy oil and longer patterns. I was wondering what differences in ball motion and overall reaction there are (if any) between a ball with a symmetric core (Storm Prodigy, Lane #1 Pink Panther) and one with an asymmetric core (RotoGrip Infinite Theory, 900 Global Bank Pearl). Should I take the core shape into account when I choosing a layout, or is it a negligible factor? Are there any other advantages/disadvantages between symmetric and asymmetric cores?

For sake of reference, I'm left-handed, average 190 in two leagues, throw at 14-15mph with about 250rpm. My current arsenal - Brunswick Ultra Zone (asymmetric), Brunswick Rattler (symmetric), Brunswick Avalanche Pearl (symmetric), Tiger-striped Viz-a-Ball (pancake).

A - There is a difference in bowling ball reaction from Symmetric and Asymmetric cores. Sometimes it is just personal preference, and other times you will want to take it into consideration for a particular lane condition. Symmetric cores tend to be smoother or more predictable on a variety of lane conditions, while asymmetrical core can be stronger or more angular on the backend they can also give varied results depending on conditions and changes in thew release.

As for layouts on these balls you dont need to be so concerned with this but know that there may be limitations when drilling depending on the desired ball motion. Higher performance balls do ten to be asymmetric since they can be made to hook so much. Keep in mind coverstock and surface prep are still very big factors in ball motion. We could take a very strong asymmetric core and put it in a plastic coverstock and it will still go pretty straight.

From the arsenal you mentioned it does sound like you are missing the high performance piece and I would not specifically say you need a symmetric or symmetric. Sounds like you need something that has a higher overall hook rating and a stronger coverstock to help you on heavier volume patterns.

Q - Just wondering how many times a ball will stand a surface change. I have a ball spinner and polished my Storm Virtual Gravity after every balling session, and took it back to 1500 grit every 50 games. My impression is that this shortened the life of the ball and after 210 games with the ball I have stopped using it! Is there a way to bring the ball back to life?

A - There really is no limit to the amount of times you can change the surface of a bowling ball. As long as you can still see the labels, you aren’t anywhere near reaching the limit. A bowling ball should be cleaned with ball cleaner after each bowling session. Every 15 games or so you should have the coverstock refreshed by sanding back to the desired grit. Every 60-70 games you should have the ball fully resurfaced. This is where you take the ball down to a very low grit using a very abrasive pad in order to remove light surface scratches and remove the oil saturated top layer of the coverstock. In order to bring your ball back to the factory finish, Storm suggest that you use a 500-Grit Abralon pad - Sand for 15 seconds on all four sides of the bowling ball. Then use a 4000-Grit Abralon pad - Sand for 60 seconds on all four sides of the bowling ball. Additionally, you may need to look into oil extraction services such as having your bowling ball extracted using a device like the Revivor. With bowling balls as aggressive as the Virtual Gravity since their peaks and valleys inside the coverstock are so rigid and spread apart creating more friction with the lane, they also have to be taken care of more diligently.

Q - I use the wrist support since my wrist is weak, and i want to start playing with out it should i get a lighter ball since i am using the 14 pound ball right now?

A - I understand the desire to not use a wrist support. They are a pain sometimes. However, they do serve a good purpose. Unless you strengthen your wrist, or change your release, you will probably want to continue using it.

In my personal situation, I hated wearing it. The main reason I stopped is I forgot it at league one night. I found myself able to bowl better without it now. Something changed with my timing, swing, release, or something else. I really do not know what changed, but I felt like I could make the ball react better.

As for using a lighter ball, stopping the use of a wrist support should not change the weight of the ball you can handle. The best advice I have for someone concerning wrist devices is, if you put one on and throw the ball and it feels very wrong then you should be wearing one. If you can feel or tell no difference with one on then you most likely have your hand and wrist in the proper position anyway. Keep in mind these are training aids as well and just because because you take it off for a while does not mean you should not occasionally practice with it on for your own sake.

Q - Hi! I had somewhat of an advanced question. Well, maybe not advanced but a question that I could not find anywhere on the internet. Most "textbook" style bowlers or articles state that your footwork should be straight in a line. And I do agree with this if you roll it straight with virtually no angle. Ex: 2nd arrow, hitting 10 board (breakpoint). What if I'm throwing 3rd arrow out to the 10? Should my footwork still be in a straight line. I would almost think that you would lose balance. A couple of my older friends, (I'm 23) keeps telling me to keep my footwork straight. But I walk in angles (slight angles) 10 to 15 degree steps. First 3 steps I go left and the power step and slide are slightly angled to the right 10 to 15 degrees as if I'm almost shooting a 10pin. When I play straighter on the right my footwork tends to be straight. Am I wrong to think this? I avg just a little over 200. I'm trying to get to the 220+ mark and be more consistent. If you read this, sorry for the long ass question.

A - Most coaches are going to tell you that you should always walk toward your target. I can tell you from experience that I drift 7 boards left during my approach and I am right handed. In my opinion as long as you know where you will finish based on where you start on the approach you will be fine. By knowing this, you will know where your release point will be and all you will need to focus on is hitting a target.

Q - I appreciate your talk bowling videos and bowling ball reviews. It’s great stuff!

One suggestion I’d make is that the white back wall puts a whole lot of reflection on the lane making it hard to see the ball track in relation to the boards and arrows. It would really help to be able to see the marks on the lane versus the mirrored reflection!

Thanks again for the video podcast and the tips. I was a 119 average bowler at the start of league this year and I’m now averaging 144. I just shot my first over 200 (241) with a RotoGrip Rising Star that I picked up at a Storm matchmaker event. I was thinking of getting something like the Marvel or the Nano but for the slow speed (15 MPH) and moderate rev rate (perhaps around 250?) that I have, the Rising Star had a more convincing result. I’ve already got a Storm Ice that shoots straight as an arrow for pickup of the 10 pin which I can’t always get with my hook…I need more practice with it though as I don’t have the confidence in shooting with the plastic like I am with my benchmark ball.

How much would getting a heavy oil ball like the Brunswick Alpha Max or the Storm VG Nano help my game? I’m looking to get my average up to above 180 and start playing in some other leagues in other houses around the local area and eventually enter a tournament or two.

A - First off, thank you for the suggestion for the ball reaction videos. Unfortunately, this is not our building and we can’t paint the wall. We will keep this in mind though.

It is very difficult without being able to watch you throw the ball to suggest something in the high performance category. Both of these bowling balls are asymmetric, and will give you an inconsistent reaction if you are not consistent with speed, rev rate, and axis rotation. Based on your average, I would recommend something more like the Prodigy or Marvel for heavier oil for you. The symmetric core will give you a much more consistent reaction on the lane. Have your ball driller map your PAP and go with a layout like the 4x4x2. This will maximize the track flare on the ball for the most hook in heavier oil conditions.

I just bought my first ball ( Slingshot 14lb). I am an American living in Germany. I don't speak German. I guess my question is, I don't know what to look for or ask about getting my ball drilled. Should I ask for a fitting or just a drilling? Or should the Pro Shop automatically try to fit my swing, grip, ball movement? Should they have a ball in the same weight and cover stock with different PAP layout for me to try? I am just a beginner who shoots in the 150's average and, from what I have red, a "tweener" and a Fingertip grip. I don't throw hard, around 15 mph. I just don't want to mess my first ball up.

A - Your ball driller there should be able to watch you throw a ball to get an idea of how you release it. However, ball drillers vary in their knowledge, just like they do here in the states. Just because they drill bowling balls, doesn’t mean they understand it. Once a good ball driller knows how you release it, they should be able to lay the ball out accordingly. Being that it is your first ball drilled to your hand, you will throw it slightly different than what you have used in the past. Watch some of our past videos to understand how the release affects the PAP, and how the PAP determines drilling layout.

Q - I need a ball for heavier volume patterns so I drilled a C-System Alpha Max last week. I'm a lower rev, medium speed player and I needed the ball the be very strong so I drilled it 55* x 4" x 75*. I've thrown it on a couple of patterns and the ball seems to not hook very much. Almost like it's layout and cover combo is too strong so it's done very early. How would you recommend changing the layout to improve this?

A - We went ahead and mapped out a ball with the specs you provided. Our initial thought is that you took a really strong ball and may have used the wrong layout. The pin was placed in a very strong position (4” from PAP) and the angles used gave you a low pin height and kicked your mass bias past your VAL which I do not suggest on newer high performance equipment.
If you notice on our test balls we kept the layout very simple with 5” pin distances to PAP and less drastic angles. This allowed the ball to really do its thing since it is already the most aggressive reaction in the Brunswick line.
Since yours is already drilled I would try altering the surface first. Get some higher grit abralon or siaair and use some polish to help get the ball to store up some energy. If you decide to plug and redrill I would go with something like 40* x 5” x 40*

Q - I've got a question. Currently I roll a Jigsaw Corner with a dull finish. I get a pretty decent hook from it. I was wondering what would happen to my ball motion if I polished it and threw the exact same (same line, speed, wrist position, etc.) that I currently do? Would my strike ball still end up in the pocket? Would I have to move? I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

A - Brent this is a great question and one that many people may not know. By polishing your ball you will increase the amount of length the ball gets and at the same time increase the overall ball motion on the back part of the lane. You would actually make your ball more angular down lane towards the pins. Most likely, yes, you would have to move your feet and position on the lane since the motion of the ball would change. Since you can easily alter the surface of your ball I would suggest trying it and seeing if you prefer the ball motion polished as opposed to dull.

Q - What exactly is a Hybrid Reactive coverstock? What is it a hybrid of? I know it's essentially a more toned-down coverstock typically seen on balls more suited to medium-to-dry oil lanes, just wondering
what it's composition is.

A - Manufacturers recently introduced these into the market. They would usually release a solid coverstock on a bowling ball, and later a pearlized version. They then started adding in a new mixture of the two, and they have become very popular.

Q2 - Can you explain the Dual-Angle Layout process? I've noticed over the course of your ball-reviews that you guys seem to be using that process more and more. What exactly are the benefits of using it?

A2 - All laying out a ball does is position the core inside the ball based on your Positive Axis Point. Once you realize that is the final goal, how you get there makes no difference. Manufacturer’s have tried coming up with their own way to do this, Storm and Roto Grip have their PSA layout, Brunswick and MoRich use Dual Angle. In the end, they all do the same thing, position the PIN and Mass Bias in relation to your PAP.

Q - My question is... I started bowling with a 5 step approach. Switched to a 4 step approach. I feel like sometimes a longer approah may be the thing to do for speed revs or both. What is the difference, and how do you knbow when to move up or move back?

A - This is very bowler dependent. They take practice and you must choose which is more comfortable for you. On a 5 step approach, the first is usually a shuffle step, or just a minor step to get you into the approach.

A - This is a personal decision and ultimately depends on your comfort zone and what you can make the ball do. I would think that you should move as long as you are making minor adjustments. Once you feel you have to make a big move, then you should think about changing bowling ball.s

Q - I would like to know what the theoretical pros and cons are of adding a pinky hole to the ball. The south Korean used it, Mark Williams uses it and I’d like to know more about it.
I’m an advanced bowler, averaging just shy of 200 at this point. I have a slight build and thin wrist. Sometimes during the first game I can feel my ball leaning in toward my body before I get it into a good swing and at the point of release. I would like to continue using 15lbs however. My pinky feels weak until I spread it for my spares.
My thought is that the pinky hole would give me more control and possibly increase my rev rate. If that is correct, what are the cons to the pinky hole, since not many bowlers use it? Like the serge eastern grip, I’m sure there are some very specific reasons for those few that choose the additional pinky hole.
Before I spend the money to have it drilled, I’d really appreciate some solid professional facts on the issue. Thanks very much in advance.

A - The pinky grip will probably not increase your rev rate. It is mainly used to aid in gripping the bowling ball. As for being concerned about the cost, your pro shop operator should not charge you any more then $4-5 for drilling it, and it would only take them a minute to do.

Q - Is there a good way to practice getting your thumb out of the ball at the release point and not too late or too early?

A - The best way to achieve this is simply by practicing as much as possible. The consistency of your point of release is directly associated to your overall timing. The more you practice, the better your timing becomes and the more consistent your timing is your point of release will follow. Just make sure when you practice that you are practicing the correct things. Do not worry about score and don’t really even worry about if you strike or get to the pocket. Work on your footwork, tempo and balance, these are the things that will improve your timing.

Q - I have a mold of my thumb because I have never found someone who could drill my thumb exactly. Do you do mols for thumbs?

Q - hey guys just a quick question. What do you think is the best way to teach a bowler to slide? I have been bowling 4 years now and as of my location (Dubbo Australia) we have no coach at all!. I have been finishing with a step at the end instead of a slide and find my speed loses as of it. Any Suggestions? Still bowling a 210 ave on THS around 193 on sports.

A - It is going to depend on if you are looking to slide more or less, or if you are trying to stay balanced in the slide.
If you are looking to slide more or less on the approach, then you are probably going to need a higher performance shoe like an SST, 3G, or other shoe with interchangeable soles and/or heels. This will allow you to control the amount of slide you have on the approach.
If you are looking to stay balanced in the slide, then you are going to want to do some drills without the ball. Best thing to do in the beginning is to practice your approach at the bowling center with no ball. This will build muscle memory and strength to help you to better balance at the foul line.

Q - How much does ball layout effect what part of the lane you play on? All the balls I've ever owned have been drilled with a 5" pin to PAP, pin above my fingers. I've always played around the second arrow and would like to move inside more, somewhere around the third arrow. Would shortening my Pin to PAP to say 4" and bringing it below my fingers have any noticeable impact on where I play the lane. How much of a difference in ball reaction would I see between these two layouts.

A - Changing the Pin to PAP distance will have a definite impact on where the ball revs up and how much flare potential the ball has. It will depend greatly on how you throw the ball to determine that sweet spot to maximize flare potential for your style.

Q - Hey guys,

First of all, thanks so much for all the work you do in providing great information and tips on bowling and products. I've recently just gotten back into the sport after many years hiatus. I bowled all through middle and high school, but never really bothered to educate myself too much on things like PAP, Mass Bias, etc. etc. Whenever I would get a new ball, the pro-shop would just ask what kind of ball-reaction I wanted, and drill accordingly.

I understand that my PAP may change over time depending on how I change my ball-delivery... but as for right now, will my PAP remain consistent from ball to ball? I'm in the market for a new ball, so will I be able to find my PAP on my old ball from years and years ago (a Brunswick Deep Danger Zone... yeah, I'm dating myself here).

A - Good question Jake. And the answer is, it depends on you as the bowler. The Positive Axis Point is just an imaginary point on the bowling ball that the ball is spinning around while it is skidding down the lane. So if you release the ball with the exact same angles, rotation, and lift, and all of the other factors that go into a release, then your PAP will remain the same from ball to ball. If you change one thing in your release, even down to the tension in your muscles, the PAP will change (even if only slightly). If they are not drilled the same, then it may be difficult to replicate the release exactly. And by drilled the same, I don’t mean the Pin to PAP, or CG placement, I just mean the span, hole sizes, and pitches.

Consistency is very difficult.

Q - So is there a definite rule or regulation that deals with lane conditions for league bowlers? I have seen where the lanes are oiled prior to bowling, but I have also experienced where they were only oiled once a day.

A - Unfortunately that is one of the problems in our sport. The center you bowl in has to be USBC certified but there are no rules regarding the conditions you must bowl on. Like you said you may bowl on freshly oiled lanes or you may bowl on lanes that were oiled yesterday and many games have been played on them.

Most houses try not to have this happen, they usually make sure the conditions are fairly fresh for league bowlers but in some cases that just does not happen. Sport or PBA Experience leagues are different in that matter. The lanes have o be freshly oiled with the specified pattern to qualify under USBC rules.

Q - How would you be able to get 15 fouls in one game? Please explain, I am probably over thinking it all but please explain.

A - Well you can get two fouls per frame which means you could end up with 20 fouls if you double fouled in every frame.

A quick note on our ball test videos. We had some issues on the screen where we show our lane oil pattern. The correct number of units is 26 units on a 38 foot pattern. We apologize for the confusion but these are the specs we currently use for all of our ball tests.

Question from Sam:
Q - I’ve been bowling for about 2 years and my average is around 175, but i still feel like my release is not consistent from shot to shot. I hear different things from different people about what to do with my hand at the point of release. What do you find is the best way to create the most revs at the point of release.

A - It sounds like if you do not already you should try out a few different wrist devices to help you learn what your release should feel like. Most of the time you only need to wear these for a period of time until your muscle memory figures out what it should feel like.

Other then that I always try and feel the ball on the inside part of my hand, this helps me transfer the weight from the inside over at release. Also keep in mind you are looking for more revs not more spin so think of trying to spiral a football on the tip of the ball. This motion is what you what to achieve at the bottom of your swing.

Q - First thank you guys for all the hard work you put into ball reviews and talk bowling episodes, always filled with great information and discussions and i look forward to upcoming episodes and reviews. I would like your opinion on Motiv and the equipment they produce, for the past year and a half I have thrown nothing but Motiv and it seems as though slowly Motiv is growing popular amongst amateur bowlers in my area. I think this is due to there overall performance and also the staff or seed players they've put together to push the product, one of which drills at my local pro shop and posts reviews very similar to yours of all there equipment. This is a bit long winded and i apologize but would love to hear your opinion and hope that you continue to review there products as they come out.

A - We are very excited about the future of the Motiv brand. We just recently started working with the guys at Motiv and so far we are very impressed all around with their products. I agree that a strong “grass roots” program helps a new brand and with them getting more exposure this year on both an amateur and professional level I think they will excel even more. At this point everything we have seen from Motiv appears to be very high quality and performs great.

Q - A older gentleman on our team throws an old-fashion straight ball using a classic Brunswick beauty that is older than I am. I'm concerned that this old ball might not be legal/sanctioned if he would bowl a very high game or series (or if this is even a concern). Most new balls today outside of Viz or plastic balls have cores that are constructed to hook. Is there a newer ball on the market designed for straight shot bowlers that could help with his game, and meet all official bowling regulations?

A - Kevin for an older ball to be legal for use in USBC league play it has to have a manufacturer name and ball name on it. It also has to have a serial number. I am sure his ball is legal for use even though it is so old.

As for getting him a newer ball I would suggest a reactive resin ball. Even if he is throwing it straight a reactive ball will still create more friction with the lane surface giving him more ball rotation as the ball travels down the lane.

Q - I have a "painful thumb" problem that needs to go away. Short of amputation, I'm looking for a solution. I've noticed a few bowlers "shaking the pain out" after releasing the ball, even when they're rolling nothing but strikes and spares. And for less talented others, I suspect their grimacing isn't just over a disappointing pin-fall. When I bring the subject up, the most common responses are either a shrugged-shoulder or quizzical expression. A few have told me to just wrap tape around my thumb until I get used to the pain, but I only subscribe to a "suck-it-up" philosophy when there are no other options.

Q - I really enjoy watching Talk Bowling. My questions are some league bowlers bring in several balls 6,8 or more, is this really the way to go? I just bring in my 1 strike ball and move until it works (which is usually the tenth frame of the third game).

A - My suggestion is to have a minimum of two balls with you. One being your strike ball or ball that you tend to use most often in league. The second in my opinion should be a plastic spare ball to shoot at your spare with. If you do not use a spare ball I still feel you should have at least one other option.

When bowling in a regular league you can usually get your equipment down to two or three balls since the lane conditions generally tend to stay the same from week to week.

If you are bowling in a “sport” league or PBA experience league I can see bringing more balls in to have more options as the lane changes and certain changes are needed in equipment. To bring 6 or 8 balls into league is a little much and I find that most of the time those people tend to confuse themselves with balls changes throughout the night.

The other time to bring that many bowling balls with you is to a tournament. Sometimes you don’t know what pattern is being used. Also, you usually bowl many games on multiple lanes. It’s usually better to get the equipment to match the lane conditions, than to try to change your approach.

Q - What is the Total Invasion? Never heard of it, I was just o the web site and found nothing about a Total Invasion?

A - The Total Invasion does appear to be an overseas release of the Invasion. I was not able to find any specifics about the ball except a picture. Usually these balls are tweaked just a little and released in a different color for international distribution.

Q - That was an interesting discussion of “sport leagues” and lower averages, but you neglected to explain just what a sport league is. Why would you expect the averages to be significantly lower?

A - Great question and we are sorry for assuming that our viewers knew what that was. We always try and think of it from every angle and sometimes we miss, thanks for the question.

bowl.com define sport bowling as a competitive on-lane adventure like no other. High-tech equipment and forgiving lane conditions tend to conceal weaknesses in the games of even the top bowlers. Competing on the same lane patterns used in the highest level of competition can help you fine and eliminate weaknesses in your game.

Basically using tougher lane conditions sport bowling helps bring averages back into range of what a bowler may actually be at. This is why we said it would most likely lower averages because due to equipment and lane conditions most averages are inflated quite a bit.

Q - I was wondering what you guys think about pin placement and top weight when ordering a ball. What do you suggest that we get? Cause I ordered a new ball and got a 3-4 oz top weight and a 3-4” pin placement. I wasn’t sure what they give if you do not ask for the specs.

A - As for what pin and top weight you should ask for that depends a lot on what type of drilling you are planning on doing with your new ball. If you do not have something specific in mind and you may just use the manufacturers suggested layout then I would suggest asking for either a 2-3” or 3-4” pin and top weight would not really matter.

Remember that the biggest factor in the layout of a ball is the distance the pin is from your PAP and the placement or distance of the Mass Bias in relation to your grip or your PAP. Top weight does not play a large factor at all and the use of a balance or wight hole will bring the ball back to legal specs statically.

Q - Guys your video on the Lane #1 Pink Panther is awesome. It looks like a really good ball for all you guys. I was looking at it on your web site and had a question about the factory finish, what does 6421 mean?

A - Lane #1 bowling balls are currently manufactured by 900 Global. They have a unique finishing technique that allows the ball to be polished while maintaining some grit under the polish. 6421 means the ball is sanded down with 60 micron (230 grit), then 40 micron (320 grit), then 20 micron (500 grit), then 10 micron (1000 grit). Then it is polished with Rough Buff compound for 20 seconds two times.

Good question and keep in mind that the ball reaction can be tweaked by adjusting the surface of the ball both in grit of the sand and in the polish used.

Q - This question is for Tony, I was wondering can you hear your ball roll down the lane? I want to know this because I am not 100% sure if I am a tweener or a cranker, thanks!

A - Normally no, I do not hear anything when my ball goes down the lane. If I miss one maybe you will hear a finger hole real quick but not normally. Keep in mind this may not be the best way to figure out where your game fits. Hitting a hole while the ball goes down the lane has to do with your track and how much the ball is flaring. I know strokers and crankers whose ball you hear nothing when they throw it and visa versa.

Q - Why do bowling balls die, or lose all of their hook?

A - This is something that all ball manufacturers have been working on to find an answer to and figure out how to make the ball reaction last a little longer. As we have explained in previous shows these newer balls are like sponges an as you bowl they absorb oil. Over time the pores in the cover get full and this creates less friction leading to a loss in ball reaction.

The other reason comes from the surface again. The surface is full of peaks and valleys. You can see them if you were to look at it under a microscope. Over time these peaks and valleys smooth out and again create less friction on the lane leading to less ball reaction. The proper maintenance is the best way to ensure you get the most from your ball over the the life cycle of the ball.

A - Well Lane #1 and Lane Masters are not only smaller privately owned companies but they also pride themselves on making very high quality product. Being a smaller company obviously their production costs are a little higher which will drive up he price of their product.

Elite on the other hand is a private label company and in that case they have set the prices higher for whatever their reasons are.

All three companies to my knowledge are not product registered with the PBA Tour and this is why you do not see professionals using them on tv.

Q - Why is it so hard to get bowlers to join a sport league? We tried at our local bowling center and only 4 people showed up. I personally like the challenge of Sport patterns. Is there a better way to promote the league? Is is because of the cost of running a sport league or the fear of the drop in average? I would like to know your guys opinion on sprt bowling maybe people in Florida are different than people here in Hickory, NC?

A - First of all Frank I love Hickory, NC. There was a comic from Hickory, John Reep, a few years ago that was on Last Comic Standing and he was hilarious.

Back to your question, my opinion is that people are a little reluctant to join a sport league and see what their average may really be on a little tougher shot. Most people feel they are better then they really are as we all do in sports or different things we participate in. In our area it was also very difficult to get a good sport league started, I also feel the cost was a little draw back but mostly people not wanting to bowl on anything but their good old house shot.

Q - Revolver video - On Tony’s ball, you can see the pin migrate over into a very stable position, which I think is really neat and helpful to see your ball reaction down lane. How would I find the drilling that would do the same for me. Is there a way to compare your PAP distance to different drillings to find it?

A - On the video you are referring to what you are seeing down lane for a second is actually my thumb hole. As the ball makes it move off the break point for just a second there is grey blur, that is my thumb sleeve.

If you are wanting to see your ball motion down lane there are a few different ways you can place white tape on your ball to see the ball path. Please check back with us in a week or so and we will have a video showing you how to tape your ball to get a better look at your ball motion.

Q - You guys have done a lot of demos on different balls. I noticed for your layouts sometimes you have the pin above the fingers and sometimes below, stacked leverage. How do you determine the layout you are going to use for a particular bowling ball or do you just have a favorite layout that you commonly use.

A - Good question, we do a little bit of everything. We do use some of our favorite layouts. More recently we have been trying to have at least one of the demo balls drilled with the manufacturer strongest recommended layout.

When we test balls we are trying to show the viewer what the balls potential is so we try and use more common layouts that they may use if they purchase that ball. We do try and mix it up so that we can show different looks to our viewers.

The pin being above or below the fingers most of the time depends on the pin length from the cg and the distance we are trying to place the pin from our PAP.

A - To date, my favorite ball for lighter oil would be the Brunswick Slingshot. There are 5 colors to choose from, mine being the Silver/Black. It’s been a great bowling ball especially for the price point.

Q - Can you tell me how to adjust to different oil patterns. Like when it’s a short pattern vs. a longer oil pattern?

A - Telling someone how to adjust is nearly impossible since there are so many variables that come into play from lane surface to the bowlers release. The easiest way to describe what you may want to try would be first make sure your equipment and the surface of your equipment match up to what you are bowling on.

With all the different balls on the market today you can usually find something that will match up to almost every pattern. Other people try things like adjusting the ball speed they use or the obvious where they play on the lane.

The most important thing is to find a part of the lane where you feel comfortable and then find a ball that you can get to the pocket and carry with. What ends up working for you may not work at all for the bowler next to you.

Q - What is the best way to get oil out of a reactive resin ball? I have heard placing the ball in a oven, to a warm water bath with dawn, or placing ball outside in warm weather?

A - We do not suggest any of the methods you mentioned. Ball manufacturers do not endorse those methods either and they all can lead to damage to your ball.

We suggest using an oil free or microfiber towel during bowling and using an approved bowling ball cleaner after each time you bowl. What you want to do is use the towel to remove the oil that is not absorbed into the cover and then use an oil remover/cleaner afterwards to help draw out the oil that was absorbed.

Q - My current equipment weighs almost 15 pounds. The past couple of years I have developed a sore elbow after bowling, but it goes away after a few days of rest. Nothing is wrong with my arm, so I am guessing that I am not as strong as I used to be (though I am heavier). I am 47 yrs old now. Would I benefit from dropping my next ball down in weight? I average 205.

A - My first suggestion would be that you have your fit checked at your local pro shop. Over time your hand can change slightly and this can effect the your grip. If your specs have changed this can cause some discomfort or pain in your elbow, hand or your entire arm for that matter.

It is very important that you are using the correct muscles in your arm to hold onto your ball and if you are not you will not only be in pain but also possibly cause damage to your tendons. Keep in mind when a span is too wide and or too short it causes you to grip using the smaller muscles.

If everything checks out then a weight change may be what you need. I would suggest not changing your ball weight until you are sure your balls are fitting your hand properly. If not the pain may continue even with a lighter weight ball.

Keep in mind that pain is the bodys way of telling you that something is wrong and if it continues I would suggest havingyour physician check it out.

Looking for an easier way to keep score. Try the Johnny Petraglia Scoring System. Basically like golf, low score wins. You throw as many balls as it takes to knock all of the pins off the deck. A perfect score would be 10 (no extra shots in the 10th frame in this version).

The Chameleon oil pattern is a low to moderate scoring pattern.
