I have been resolving to make the Special Selection a more regular show and so to this end I will be choosing tracks for a regular new to PMN special selection, to bring you more music, more contrast, more comparing, more artists, more males, more females, more bands, more rock, more roll, more folk, more stroll, and , well just more shows!.

So two tracks that appeared on the PMN listing of the 12 ^th November are featured today. One male, one female, one Canadian, one German.

We start with Melissa Rebronja, (pronounced REBRONYA), a prolific singer/songwriter with two independent CD's Embrace Yourself & You'll Be Mine. Airplay on Canadian Radio with BRAVO TV video track "Beautiful" and her own version of "Wonderwall", which reached a top 50 download with CDBaby.com.

After the last episode of the SS show, when I featured Jim Guittard and his and others use of CCMixter allowing YOU to remix the component tracks of many songs to create a new mix, I got a lovely note from Jim pointing me to another CC place for music., Jamendo hosts many artists, including Jim. and there byline is “On Jamendo artists allow anyone to download and share their music.” It's free, legal and unlimited . Jamendo : Jim Guittard I thank Jim to getting in touch, he mentioned that he is in fact an American living in Bulgaria, although with the current economic difficulties that are affecting the new European states harder than the more established ones, it will be a hard time for anyone trying to start a new life, I do wish him well. He has worked hard producing a wide variety and large number of tracks, available for podcaster via the PMN, downloading via Jamendo or remixing via CCMixter.

Of course many of the same tracks are already available to listen to on Mevio and the PMN, and Mevio hosts video and many additional artists as well.

I was just reviewing the latest additions to the PMN and I was lead down a fascinating path, this track caught my eye.

That track had Jim Guittard 's bio, which as well as telling me that Jim is from Bulgaria, and that It's just him, a do-it-yourselfer. Loving Psychedelic and folk-rock music with 12-string Rickenbacker. it led me to a goldmine of stuff that I am so surprised that I haven't discovered before, so I must tank jim for that. Maybe this is no news to you, but it came as shock to me. A bit of history for those that don't know, Creative Commons is a licensing scheme to define and enable use of music and other IP by others while not depriving the creator of their rights. I am a great supporter of the CC principle, although the license is still being tested in various court cases and was recently updated to version 3, I hope that it becomes as pervasive and trustable as GNU has become for software

The gem that I was handed was a link to a site called ccMixter - Welcome to ccMixter , a site that is part of CC that actively encourages the dissection and re-building of music and song, which I see as promoting the creativity of future generations and rather than forcing them to choose from becoming a tied up artist being beaten with a stick or relenting and being a meer passive consumer of corporate owned intellectual product generated by those same shackled artists.

So this inspiration leads me to the intention that this podcast become the first of incidental mini-series that will highlight some of the benefits of the Creative Commons principle. Having followed the Jim Guittard link from the PMN to Ccmixter and looking around I found a lot of buzz around an artist called Shannon Hurley , then looking back on the PMN I see Shannon had loaded tracks onto the PMN last October, and somehow I missed them, although if I had listened to http://thisrealitypodcast.com/ I wouldn't have for long. One of the strengths of the PMN is the large number of tracks, but this is also a difficulty, but podcasters are there to address this challenge.

So I discover Shannon Hurley who goes under shannonsongs on ccMixter, note that shannonsongs.com is the site of another singer all together.

And I find her on the PMN and I pick a track called “We Are In Love” and it goes like this on the Mevio release.

This is a lovely production, but could it be better? well of course better is just a subjective thing, depending on the ear, the brain, and the mood of the listener, but with the CC attribution non-commercial use license anyone with the interest, and maybe the skill, (it does help) can take the parts kindly supplied as I show here:

You take these parts and can add, blend, mix and remix to achieve something that suits your taste, mood or whatever. CCMixter and Shannon encourage you to upload the new mix back to the Ccmixter site, but all you are required by the license to do is Attribute the parts used to Shannon herself, and you must ask for separate permission if you wish to the production for commercial purposes. One other thing you must do is to make sure others that get your production content know that your work contains parts licensed using the CC license, include a link to the license text or the text itself.

So you may say, “what could I do with those tracks”. Well Adam Curry often plays tracks from a site called mashuptown, where various tracks with the same BPM are mixed to create something new, in the old vinyl record days there was a UK series on compilations based on the same idea of common Beats Per Minute called “Stars on 45”, the 45 coming from the rpm speed of the vinyl hit single.

From the Ccmixter site there were 28 mixes listed when I looked and I checked out a couple for you, from dgeis and Doghouse

The young girl sat transfixed by the man playing the guitar in front of her. His Irish lilt and the dramatic story that unfolded minute by minute through the song he was singing, gripped her soul. Music can do that, she thought, and noted the lyrics down as soon as she could. Being an budding singer she taught herself the tune and sang the song to folk club audiences all around England. The song became a great hit on the club circuit and only years later did the young lady learn that the words that she noted were not those that had been sung all those years before.

The song that Kate Rusby sang together with Kathryn Roberts she titled “Ned on the Hill” the original was in fact “Ned OF the Hill”. This story, that I recall Kate telling to me, was brought to my mind buy the first of four great tracks IMHO from this shows special selection. I'd love to play Kate Rusby, but I don't have any of her music Podsafe yet, but good news is that the artists I feature today have embraced the tubes, seen what great things come from doing so and have made their music Safe for Podcasters, and are continueing to release new stuff. For the young lad nursery was fun, the son of a world famous writer, he had is own artistic bent. The class had been drawing pictures and Mrs Clinck had let them go early, a to take their prized artwork home to show it off. Before his the daddy could give him his hug, the little one proudly thrust his picture forward, saying look daddy, loook. The artwork depicted a little girl, a classmate of the little boy, "look Daddy" he said, this is Lucy, in the Sky, with Diamonds.

Sheltered in Sound, The Music of Sean Nilsson

Sheltered in Sound, the musical guise of Sean Nilsson, plays starkly intimate 21st century independent folk music. The economy of words, mixed with acoustic guitar, harmonica, and looped percussion, has garnered comparison to Hayden, Mark Kozelek and the Nebraska-era of Bruce Springsteen.

In 2002, Sheltered in Sound released a limited edition EP, A Coming Of Age, which received national Canadian airplay on CBC Radio 2, and also airplay support from U.S. college radio.

The debut full-length album from Sheltered in Sound, Field Recordings from the City, addresses the solitude felt in times of grief, disillusion, and the search for identity once the innocence of youth fades. The album provides observation on the human experience in an urban setting.

The sparse tone of the album came together over a period of months, recorded in the off-hours at a downtown Toronto studio.  The late night sessions played perfect accomplice to the unflinching personal reflection of the songs. Producer and fellow musician Scott Cooper commented, "we aimed to deliver the songs with minimalist arrangement - music to lean into."

Canada is a brew pot for artists and many great bands and musicians on the PMN hail from there and after the last SS I had a msg from Steve Moore of Canadian rock band Inner Surge drawing my attention to their new CD "An Offering" with tracks named like "Crossing the Line", "Maggots & Liars" & "Halliburton Piggies"

They bio themselves as “Inner Surge is a an aggressive, thought-provoking band from Canada. On the Special Selection show we focus on the music, comparing & contrasting, it is great that bands see so much value in podsafe music and podcasting shows such as this. Inner Surge, with a U, have uploaded most tracks from the new album and I have listened though a selection.

WHATS THIS

This is the 3 ^rd set of our tracks with Falling in the title Special Selection for March 2008. Previously we played along with the Oscar winning “Falling Slowly” and other great romantic tracks, last time we went bluesy and jazzy, and I hope you enjoyed those sets as much I have, especially if you followed my lead and took a 2 ^nd listen to them.

When preparing the original show I found some great Rock and some great folk tracks which I wanted to bring to you and this show gives me a chance to showcase some of those Rock Metal and Alternative tracks that I found on the PMN.

“Falling” is as much of a theme for the rock writer as the romantic one. Now rock, metal and similar genre's haven't featured much in the SS show before. Partly because it is a genre that I have not I followed closely in recent times, and I like to bring you tracks where I understand the background. But thinking of the SS show's goal of comparing and contrasting all the types of the excellent music you can find on PS, I didn't want to leave these tracks out. So I have selected those I enjoyed and some that may take more work on my part, and I present them to you here.

I thank all you listeners for making March the best download month for SS, this follows increases every month since our launch (except Jan 08, I guess because that followed a great December boost). Our 4 ^th track makes me recall times past I mentioned Earth, Wind and Fire earlier and as the name of the next band would suggest, this track makes me recall that band I enjoyed so much in my youth, hailing from the land of the Olympics they are the first Greek Metal band I've come across. Interesting timing that this track appears in the Special Selection, given that the Olympic torch was lit and is on route around Greece before heading out to China. Anyway back to the music.

Welcome to the sss 008 for the 31 jan 2008 the show where I compare and contrast podsafe music I find on PS and elsewhere. PS is a great resource of music and audio built up since 2005 and available to listen to via podshow.com, with many tracks available to download for 99 us cents.

The theme for this weeks show came to me in that serendipitous way that typifies the world of the web, a web of internets, intranets, and a web of human contact. I met GreenDragon aka GD at podcampUK last September. Recently I joined in with Twitter a web based form of text messaging limited to 140 chars the same way, but giving much more freedom for input and output, The way you use is up to you, if people like what you say they can link to you or follow in twitter speak. In the weeks I have been on Twitter I have gathered a group of followers, and surprise, one is the very same GreenDragon.

GD is an enthusiastic supporter of independent music from artists not signed to any label. He produces a podcast that features only unsigned artists. He tweeted about a band called Scarlet Blonde, a band he is helping to promote.

Following the web of links around Scarlet Blonde I discovered they are a UK band that has really taken the 'independent' promotion idea to a high level.

GD has produced a great website promoting the Band and I feel that it demonstrates the difference between a home made www.MySpace.com page and one from a 'pro'

Now SB have track up on the PMN, they have done Podcasts, also available from Podshow.

But they have a series of mixes of one track up on GD's site. Now I enjoy listening to music, I enjoy trying to make music, but I am in no way 'an artist'. Listening to these has given me a new understanding of how the professional inputs to the process can totally change the result. I can use the SB track to demonstrate this.

And as well as recordings SB as with most bands have a live side to them. And another tweet brought me news of SB preforming as part of a real life mashup. A web mashup is a mixing of content to produce something new and the real life mashup I am thinking of it provided by the world of podcasting meeting the world of clubbing. Just as the 'Rave' was a new an innovative mashup of clubs and rock festivals what the Purple Turtle is doing is just as exciting.

 Welcome to the The Special Selection Show episode Number Five for 21 st September 2007 I am your host Mike The Bee.

This is an occasional series of, music focused shows that aim to promote the range and quality of work I have discovered while surfing http://music.podshow.com for music to include in my http://inWokingham.poshow.com and other shows.

I am producing this in our studio at the farthest Western Edge of Europe and it has been inspired by a particular feature of this place, not unique to the West of Ireland, but does seem to be a feature in those coastal places on the westerly side of continents, Europe, The US of A, Mexico, and Australia to mention but a few, The thing I am thinking of is the Sun, its setting in the evening and its rising in the morning. Something worshipped, and a source of fascination since man began.

My Podcasting inspiration, Adam Curry, on his Daily Source Code show, tells of how he believes that each person has a collection of music that creates a 'sound track of your life', music that reminds you of, and returns you to a place, a time and an event whenever it is played. He passionately believes that you have a right to hear this music freely, not for free, but at a fair price. At the moment podcasters are restricted in the music sources they can play, but the range of podsafe music is increasing daily due to the belief of many artists that Podcasting promotion is selling music, selling tickets to gigs, and spreading the news of the great bands that are just never heard on the Old Steam Radio.

Now, there is such a song that takes me back to my young years, a song of controversy, a song that intrigued my Dad because of the risqué lyrics, and the songs snub at authority. I believe it was banned from the “must watch” TV programme “Top of the Pops” that featured the weekly top 10 at the time, and from BBC Radio for several years, and, as a result, it would have been popular on the offshore pirate radio stations such as Radio Caroline and Radio North Sea International and on Radio Luxembourg a station we listened to 'under the covers' as it faded in and out of the ether late into the night.

I was really pleasantly surprised to find that, this piece of music, which forms part of the 'sound track of MY life' is available on the PMN twice, performed by two separate artists each with their own interpretation of this classic. So we may not be able to play the original, but the flood of memories is no less, as a result.

I will play the first selection, and then we follow the theme along a winding road of contemporary works inspired by the sun before returning to the place we started.

MUSIC: 1-Rising Conviction

P2: That first interpretation is by Rising Conviction from Arizona in the US, and they have spent the last 5 years blasting eclectic Alternative metal on the Phoenix metal scene. I am pleased to find them on the PMN where they have 6 pages of tracks including a full album preview. Their website is at http://risingconviction.com

The lyrics are clear to hear, but the meaning was hotly debated when the song was released on the world by the Animals. Was the “House of the Rising Sun” really a brothel?, was the lad corrupted as an under-age youth?, was it based on a true story? Surely these things could not be happening in such modern times?

Putting together the fear that those lyrics instilled in some radio producers, given the radical “thought police” attitude, that was still hanging on this long after the second world war, but was still strong in many peoples minds, then this next track, again inspired by the rising sun, with its hard rock elements would never have been heard on the BBC of the time, and may have had to wait for John Peel's “Old Grey Whistle Test” on the newly launched artsy focused TV channel BBC2 before being presented to a TV audience. From NY in the US, this band The Radical Thought Resistance or simply RTR were formed in January 2000 by guitarist Aki-hisa Ishi-bashi and drummer Howard Alper they have 5 tracks up on the PMN, and have recently been featured on the Make Blogs not War podcast. P3: Tangerine Dream was a group that came out of the hippy times, another movement that was getting close to nature, the earth and the sun. I was a bit on my own within my crowd in getting laid back to their instrumentals. Now whether the dream reference in this groups name refers back that to that time, I don't know but it does bring them to my mind. From Ontario, Canada, BitStream Dream, what a great name for a band!, was originally founded by composer and producer Rom Di Prisco the group are a collective of vocalists and musicians from around the world. P4: Later in my teens bands like Osibisa were at the top of my play list and the next Rising Sun inspired track reminds me of that time. We do travel the globe on the SSS and the next group, Ashroad come from Germany, have been influenced by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers amongst others and was founded 4 years ago by three members of a band known as Mescalito, after teaming up with a new lead singer and a new guitar player, they worked hard and long creating five songs for their album and are working on five more. P5: My eclectic taste for music has a major folk slice running through it and although this track maybe a bit laid back for my immediate choosing the next invocation of the rising sun builds tempo after the start and having played it a number of times it has steadily grown on me, while Jersey Todd from the Jersey Toddshow has been raving about him from the start. Coming from Georgia in the US Art Linton draws on a wide variety of influences including Dylan, Elvis Costello and Billy Joel, adapting and transforming them in his own style.
