Southern Beer Review (HD)

 <itunes:author>James Gass</itunes:author>

Each week we review two beers and at least one of those is either a
specialty beer, import beer, or a microbrew. During each review we
provide information on the history of the styles and history on the
beers themselves. We also provide information on food pairing for each
beer. Our goal is to reach out not only to the beer connoisseur but to
the average beer drinker as well and encourage you to try something
new and provide useful information at the same time.

The word “Maudite” refers here to the Legend of “Chasse-Galerie” a tribute to the early lumberjacks of Nouvelle-France. The legend tells of eight daring woodsmen who, during winter, yearned to be home for the Holidays. They conjured up the Devil and all of them pledged their soul in return for flying them in their canoe to their village. As they sailed across the moonlit sky, one of them managed to free himself from the pledge by invoking the name of God, which caused the flying canoe to come crashing down to earth.

Color range will be similar, though leaning towards the darker end of the scale; dark golds to copper. Low carbonation. Malts tend to be more pronounced, often toasty and fruity, with maybe some notes diacetyl. And despite "bitter" being in its name, ESBs are not really all that bitter. They key to an ESB is balance.

About the 100 barrel series
The Harpoon 100 Barrel Series is a return to our brewing roots. We call it the 100 Barrel Series because that’s exactly what it is— one-of-a-kind limited batch creations fashioned by a Harpoon brewer. Every couple of months a different Harpoon brewer will choose a style, develop a recipe, and brew the beer—from selecting the ingredients to the final filtration. You will find that brewer’s signature on each bottle of beer from their batch. So if you like the beer, you’ll know who to thank.

Brew Date: 3/26/10

Packaging Date: 4/9/10

The 31st offering from the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series is the Single Hop ESB, brewed by Harpoon brewer Charlie Cummings. Already excited about crafting an Extra Special Bitter, Charlie jumped at the rare opportunity to brew this beer using one hop varietal, Delta, exclusively throughout the process.

Dr. Fear’s Caramel Delight
Brewed By:
Jay Chapman
Illinois
Style | ABV
Barley Wine | 10%
