Having been in constant creative demand for over 17 straight years, pop-punk uber-band Bowling for Soup clearly has no problem kicking out fresh songs, ridiculous videos, and album after album of music that sets the bar for their genre. Even after nearly two decades together, some things are the same. They still call Denton, TX home, they still are putting out an avalanche of new music every year, and they’re still the guys you’d cut class with to get a beer and a Hot Pocket. For a band that has had only one personnel change in 17 years, which is a remarkable feat by any standards, it’s clear that the team stays tight and that ain’t gonna change. As much as things are the same, however, recent times have brought massive changes for Bowling for Soup, and some things are very, very different and completely awesome.

At the core, Bowling for Soup is still Jaret Reddick, Erik Chandler, Gary Wiseman, Chris Burney, and 3 generations of loyal, ravenous fans. As of Fall 2009, though, the partner no longer at the party is Jive Records. Jive and the guys parted ways on good terms, but sadly just four weeks after the release of Sorry for Partyin’. Away with the label went all promo plans for the album, and no single from the record was ever released to radio. Though they were shell shocked, the decision not to slow down was obvious. Rather than spend a couple years trying to get ownership of Sorry for Partyin’ from Jive so they could release it themselves, Jaret locked himself in a room for a month and wrote the songs that have become their latest release, Fishin’ for Woos.

Available worldwide on April 26th, 2011, Fishin’ for Woos is their response to being label-free for the first time in years and deciding to go balls out as an independent band with a mind-blowing fan base. “The only pressure we felt was not to make a record just to fill the space and keep things moving,” says songwriter/frontman Jaret Reddick. “It had to be just as real as everything else we’ve done.” It worked. Fishin’ for Woos is the classic Bowling for Soup sound and energy, led by marquis tracks “S-S-S-Saturday”, “Girls In America”, “I’ve Never Done Anything Like This” featuring Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo, and “Turbulence” featuring Gabriel Mann, who is 1/4 of The Rescues and composes the music for mega hit TV show Modern Family. Also making its full-production debut is “Guard My Heart,” which will make legions of fans very, very happy. Written by bassist Erik Chandler for a film called Sardines, the rough demo was leaked to fans online in 1997 and became a monster favorite around the world.

Being able to include “Guard My Heart” on the record simply because they want to is the nutshell of where Bowling for Soup is at right now. “The freedom is amazing,” says Reddick. “If we want to release a new record every 6 months, we can. If we want to make a Christmas album, or remix album, or sing in a Disney project, we can. We don’t need to get anyone’s permission.”

He’s not kidding about the Disney thing. In 2008, the creators of the Disney cartoon TV series Phineas and Ferb, which is hailed as one of the most-viewed cartoons in the world, asked Jaret to expand the Emmy-nominated 30-second theme song into a full-length radio single. “Today is Gonna Be a Great Day” is the result, and the song and music video have become fixtures on Radio Disney and the Disney Channel. Since the first one went so well, Disney has since invited Jaret back to write several more songs for Phineas and Ferb, have cast him in a recurring role on the show as the voice of “Danny,” the lead singer of the band Love Handle, and have included both Jaret as “Danny” and Bowling for Soup as themselves on the two Phineas and Ferb Christmas albums, and several other releases. All in all, the Disney thing turned into a pretty sweet deal, and in addition to making them heroes to their kids, it reconnected Bowling for Soup to fans young and old.

While keeping their fans of all ages fat and happy on BFS music and TV goodness, the guys have kept right on doing what they’ve done from the start: the road. Having literally played around the world several times, including Cuba, Australia, Japan, Belgium, Italy, China (twice), thousands of shows in the US and 26 separate tours of the UK just since 2000, these guys know the road. “You gotta stay busy to stay relevant,” remarks Jaret. “Plus, we love what we do. It’s our job to play music for people, and we love our job.” In 2011, “the job” will include April in the UK on an acoustic tour headlined by Bowling for Soup and supported by Erik Chandler’s solo project The Mulberry St. Socialites and People On Vacation (Jaret’s other band), and then May/June shows in the US before spending July in Asia playing for the U.S. Military. After Asia, it’s back to the US for college shows in August/September and then a full-force full band UK tour to drop Fishin’ for Woos on the world.

Some things, like their endless touring schedule and love for their fans, are the same. Other things have changed. It’s not like they thought, “hey, pretty soon we’re gonna be cartoons without a record deal playing shows for the military across Asia.” That’s just how it went down, and in solid BFS-fashion, they’re using it as fuel and killing it. Plans and deals and ideas get different, get weird, get gone. Some things, though, like fans and friends and kick-ass music stay exactly the same. Some things will never change. They’ll just grow.

OLIVER TROLLEY
It all started in 3-bedroom apartment located in a beach side, Southern California ghetto called Del Mar.  Long time friends, Kevin Childs and Brian Zanini, had just finished a bottle of Makers Mark Whiskey and decided to jam on an acoustic guitar and a piano.  Despite the drunken mistakes and out of tune guitar, the boys we’re feeling the flow and the music was sounding surprisingly good. After a couple of these blurry nights, Kevin and Brian decided to take it to the next level and book studio time with their friend Brian Grider at SCM recordings.
With a set date to record and two heads full of ideas, it was time to write. The goal was to write songs that we’re sincere and easily understood.  They weren’t trying to create a new genre or change the world, just write some good pop tunes. When they got in to the studio, it took about two weeks to record four songs. Three days after recording, Kevin sent a track to his friends at Gas Can Music and immediately got a response.  They wanted Kevin and Brian to record two more tracks and release a six song EP off Gas Can Music.  This provided all the excitement and inspiration they needed to crank out two new songs and get the ball rolling.  With their new EP titled “Circles” set to release March 29th from Gas Can Music, and a full band including Adam Lopez on guitar, Alex Lopez on bass, and Brian Meyer on drums, Oliver Trolley stand ready to make a lasting impact on the Southern California music scene and beyond.  Keep a lookout and expect a lot more from these boys in 2011.(from band page at Gas Can Music)

VANCOUVER, Jan. 6 /CNW/ - Following up on 2009's successful debut CD "The Twenty Second Century, Canada's 22nd Century released "Where's Howie?!!". Produced by legendary rock producer John Webster (credits: Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Scorpians, Motley Crue) and mastered by Todd Simko (Pure), Where's Howie was recorded in Vancouver's Mushroom studios and released Jan 6, 2011 on Bugnut Records. The 10 song CD includes covers of Martha and the Muffins "Echo Beach" and The Angel's (aka "Angel City") No Secrets which charted in Australia as high as #8 in 1980.

22nd Century recorded the new CD with punk rock superstar Zippy Pinhead (The Mutants, The Dils, D.O.A.) on drums to fill the void of Glen G. who left the band in 2009. The trio have briefly toured, playing to audiences in North America while enjoying success from the first CD including winning the popular vote in a National battle of the bands contest, being nominated by the Somojo UK as a finalist for "Rock Artist of the Year" and having radio airplay in dozens of countries worldwide.

"The band's three members, Duane Chaos, Tim Plommer and Zippy Pinhead, have really merged their musical direction" stated Eddy Bugnut of the band's label. "The songwriting is really strong in the singles Teenage Underwear Model and U Generation as well as the title track, Howie the Skid. When I first heard U Generation it reminded me of The Who's earlier live performances. It is a song that basically kicks you in the face from start to finish".

Come On, Come On formed in October of 2009 when two friends Kelvin Cruz and Justin Powell decided to combine forces once again musically and make a song that would become known as "Life's Been More Than Fair."

Kelvin and Justin are no strangers to making music with each other. Both are formerly of the Chino Hills, screamo/rock group A Thorn For Every Heart. Cruz and Powell have been making music together for eight years now, which makes for no surprise of the chemistry that was quickly found writing for Come On, Come On.

Owl is a rock band featuring three exceptionally talented rock musicians who have joined together to create something that is more than the sum of its individual parts. The band is a collaboration between bassist/singer Chris Wyse (The Cult), drummer Dan Dinsmore (The Clay People), and guitarist Jason Mezilis (Your Horrible Smile). Owl is the brainchild of Wyse, who wrote and produced the album. It was recorded at Matt Sorum's DRAC Studios in Los Angeles and produced and mixed in various locations on the east and west coasts. Owl is out now on New York-based indie label Overit Records.

Currently the bassist for The Cult, Wyse has performed with an array of rock's elite such as one-time roommate Jerry Cantrell, celebrity super group Camp Freddy, producer Bob Rock and as one-half of Ozzy Osbourne's rhythm section alongside ex-Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin. Wyse's skills are also on display in the documentary "Some Kind Of Monster" during his Metallica audition. Featuring his patented stand-up bass, unique and almost conjuring-like bowing style and on-stage intensity, Owl is more than just Wyse's side project. The band is a labor of love.

"Owl is the kind of band I would want to hear," says Wyse of the band's blend of song craft and prog-rock musicianship. "We want to deliver and have people be emotionally moved. We try to dazzle with our chops to create a kind of fantasy world as a passage to lure you in."

Of the band's synergy, Dinsmore observes, "From the very first time we played together, we felt an incredible vibe." Mezilis agrees, "The band clicked instantly. The first note we hit felt like a gunshot. It was electric."

The album boasts an eclectic mix of sounds and themes crafted outside the norms of the traditional modern rock record format. An instrumental piece serves to bookend the songs on the album, thereby encasing the listener inside a musical journey. Mezilis explains, "This record takes you someplace special."

Owl's first single, "Pusher" co-written with songwriter/producer Marti Fredriksen (Aerosmith, Eminem) and "More on Drugs," Wyse's doom-laden, sometimes apocalyptic visions border on psychedelia, with the former's insistence that sex can be every bit as powerful an addiction and the latter's blast at TV ads touting legal pharmaceuticals and their long list of side effects. He rails against society's dogmas and hypocrisies.

"Our music's not really that dark," says Wyse. "We're just unveiling places you might not want to go. It's all about the art and provoking discussion. Owl provides a platform for us to share our musical vision."

"Waves" features Mezilis' self-described dirt-rock guitar sound and Dinsmore's tribal percussion with a coda that segues from muezzin-like Middle Eastern chanting and chilling screams into an all-out psychedelic rave-up, recalling Led Zeppelin at its most mystical. "Sky Rocket" is an evocative, dreamy ballad while "Violent Center" creates a truly original sound with its unorthodox compositional form and atonal, mind bending-yet-structured layered approach to 9/4 time signature. The Pink Floyd-influenced art-rock of "Ghost in the Starlight" is a beautiful, epic story about a female spirit from the 1920's that haunted a house Wyse lived in on Wonderland Avenue, in the famed creative mecca of Laurel Canyon. "Apples" ominously recalls tales from adventures on the Sunset Strip rock scene, "Preacher Man" is a bold-faced critique of organized religion and "No Light" documents the struggle to find meaning in life.

Dinsmore states, "Owl is the culmination of everything I've done musically and ever wanted to do. It's what I've been working towards my whole life."

Wyse concludes, "True artists don't wait around for the industry to tell them what they're supposed to play. The artist has to be the hub around which everything else revolves. Owl is all about the music."

For the hard rock quartet megaphone, the mission has been simple: Saving rock n’ roll from the machine, and bringing it back to where it should be – loud, catchy and in your face.  That they’re succeeding with that mission is obvious; a huge draw in their native Orlando, Florida, extensive radio play, gigs opening for arena headliners and festival appearances.  And with their new album, Exit Silent Mode, filled to the brim with unforgettable hooks, melodies and songs, megaphone is poised to take everything about their band to the next level.

Comprised of Matt Bloodwell on guitar, vocals and main songwriting duties, Paul Smith on lead guitar, James Woodrich on bass, and Scott Smith on drums, megaphone is a collection of some of the brightest rock and roll lights in Orlando music.  The band formed in late 2004 when Bloodwell, formerly the drummer for Orlando band Precious, moved to guitar and decided to form a band around the songs that he had been writing.  He explains, “I wanted to put together a real rock band with big guitars and big hooks.”

Bloodwell started the band, and then proceeded to recruit his favorite players in town.  Paul Smith was a former touring guitarist for Seven Mary Three and a member of VonRay; James Woodrich was the former bassist for My Hotel Hear; and Scott Smith, the newest member of the band, having joined in 2007, had been the drummer for Cori Yarckin.  “I was a fan of all these guys in their former bands,” says Matt, “It was a big deal to me that they were willing to take a chance with me out front and on guitar.”

megaphone’s debut full-length, For Crying Out Loud, released in the spring of 2005, immediately vaulted them into the upper echelon of Orlando bands, and earned them extensive radio play and touring opportunities, including their songs being featured on the MTV show “Made,” radio play on several central Florida stations, and gigs opening for artist like Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley of Kiss, Everclear, Edwin McCain, Seven Mary Three and more.

The album’s success was a blessing, sometimes a mixed one.  As James recounts, “The first album got us a lot of gigs and attention; it really put us to work.  We wanted to record a new one, but there was no urgency for it because For Crying Out Loud kept serving us so well and kept creating opportunities for us.”  Matt adds, “The first album was kind of a blueprint of what megaphone would be.  But Exit Silent Mode really reflects the amount of time we’ve been together as a band.  It’s much more organic and represents the sound of the band as it truly is.”

Produced by Matt, Paul and Justin O’Neill, the guitarist in Cori Yarckin and a long-time friend of the band, and mixed by Pete Thornton (Paramore, Shinedown), the new album is a far more accurate reflection of the band.  From the hard driving opener, “Write It Down,” megaphone has captured the combination of both anthemic and hook-filled rock that has been their trademark, with unforgettably strong choruses that pay off in spades.

“Gravitate” pulses with a muscular riff and is highlighted by Matt’s soaring hard rock vocals, hearkening back to a time when rock truly rocked, and it has quickly become a signature song among megaphone’s fans.  Matt says, “It started as a tune that Paul had, and he trusted me enough to play around with it and change a few things.  Once we had the final demo of it, we knew we had something.  Paul adds, “It was the first time where Matt and I really collaborated, and we made it far more than the sum of the parts.”  Indeed, the entire band shines on “Gravitate” – James on bass and Scott on drums drive the song powerfully and propulsively, both leading and lending support to Matt’s vocals and Paul’s wailing guitar.

“My Favorite New Disaster” is perhaps the song that best epitomizes the sheer catchiness of megaphone’s music, with its indelible hook and radiant sheen. Matt recalls, “We had to rewrite the melody right before we recorded.  We had thought we had a good arrangement but the verse fell flat. In finalizing everything, we took it to a whole new level.”  James adds, “The first time we played it live, the crowd reaction was amazing.”

Having had such a great experience recording, the band is already planning album number three.  Matt says, “We have more ideas that we just didn’t get to on this record.”  The band is also taking on much more of a DIY ethos.  Matt elaborates, “Last time, I think we were trying to impress everyone in Orlando – press, radio, etc.  But now we’re using a lot of the new technology to promote ourselves and go straight to the fans and bypass the so-called gatekeepers.”

Wherever they’ve gone, megaphone has attracted converts mesmerized by the sheer power of their songs and performances.  They make straight-ahead, balls out rock and roll for an audience that has missed the real thing, or in some cases, are too young to have ever experienced it.  On Exit Silent Mode the band has taken their vision of what rock can be to a new peak.  As Matt concludes, “We don’t have an agenda.  We just want to play and write the kind of music that we wish was available for us to buy.  Fortunately for us and everyone else, we’ve found each other, and we all feel the same way about music.”

Larzz Principato, the main member of Show Me The Skyline, has had his guitar glued to his body for the better part of the last five years. But, when you are obsessed with music, young, and gifted with the ability to create something that makes people crave more --- sometimes you’ve got no choice. At just 16 years old, this young artist, hailing from New Fairfield, Connecticut, is determined to make his mark. Drawing influence from artists such as Hellogoodbye, All Time Low, and Dashboard Confessional, Larzz is focused on his game plan to stand on the shoulders of the heroic artists that have had an impact on him, and to produce a fresh sound.

The name Show Me The Skyline is taken from lyrics of the song “Sticks, Stones, and Techno” by All Time Low. Larzz began writing in the summer of 2008 and entered the studio in the fall. The January 2009 release of Show Me The Skyline's first EP, titled “Rain or Shine”, was produced by P.J. Bianco and J.P Rende. P.J. Bianco is an award-winning multi-platinum producer/songwriter whose discography features The Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato.

This artist’s story is just starting, and the “Rain or Shine EP” is only the first chapter to a tale that is destined to be one filled with opportunities and challenges. Larzz is doing exactly what he has set out to do, which is to have fun, to meet lots of new people, and to pay tribute to the style of music he grew up listening to.

Most rock bands look to hitch themselves to whatever the hot new musical trend is. Not so with Underwhelmed. The New York based quintet plays a driving and emotionally overwhelming brand of hard rock that hearkens back to an era where bands left everything they had on the stage. On their new album, Reveal, the band displays the unity and sense of purpose that has built the band a growing national base of fans who love rock, because they live it.

Consisting of Chris Amplo on vocals, Mike Russo on bass, his brother Chris Russo on drums, Paul Boyle on guitar and Mike Armstrong on guitar, the story of Underwhelmed is one of friendship and a shared vision. Starting in 1998, when Chris auditioned for the Russo brothers, the band has dedicated themselves to their own vision of what rock can be. As lead singer Chris Amplo says, “We go for a real sense of purity in what we do. We’re not trying to reinvent rock. We’re five guys playing the music the way we think it should be played.” That way is an amalgam of stylings, containing everything from the anthemic rock Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and U2, to the darker sonic palette of bands like the Doors and the Afghan Whigs.

After filling out their lineup with Paul Boyle and Mike Armstrong in 2003, the band set to take New York by storm. Playing legendary clubs like CBGB’s, the band paid their dues in the competitive New York club scene with an attitude that is at the heart of who the are. Mike states, “Basically, we play with the same passion whether we’re playing for 4 people or 4000. I think audiences recognize that, and it has them feel a real connection to us.”

The results have spoken for themselves. 10,000 visitors to their MySpace page each month and expanding tour base including markets in the mid-Atlantic, mid-West, South and Northeast. “We have a band that’s exciting to watch,” Amplo enthuses. Mike and Chris Russo are incredible musicians – Chris is an unbelievably exciting drummer to watch. Mike just kills it on guitar and Paul just oozes with the most unique energy that we get so much from. He’s a real creative inspiration to all of us.” What makes it even more impressive is that the band has done this all on their own, all self-managed and self-financed.

Now the band is set to take things to the next level with the release of their new album, Reveal. Produced by Tom Hazaert at his studios in Strongsville, OH, the album is a collection of songs that are far more than the sum of their parts. Written collectively by the band, the songs display the maturation of the songwriting and confidence that has come with it. As Amplo says, “We’re all more confident in ourselves and each other, and that really comes through in the songs.”

You can hear that confidence in the “Reveal,” the album’s title track. Beginning with a winsome guitar intro and Chris’s strong and supple voice, the song becomes a melodic explosion that showcases Paul and Mike’s driving and thundering guitars and the propulsive rhythm section of Mike and Chris Russo. It’s the kind of radio ready rock that is beyond trends, and never fails to move an audience.

With its irresistible hooks, “Angel” is the kind of song that leaves one breathless with the sheer skill of the songwriting and playing. Like many great songs, it was one that came together quickly. Amplo recalls, “We had the lyrics and melody in an hour and a half. It was like the music came through me and wrote itself.” And “Leave It All Behind,” a tale of love gone wrong, pulses with a raw sensuality and layer of darkness that makes it phenomenally compelling.

The band will be hitting the road soon – playing whenever they can. “If it was up to me,” says Mike with nods from the rest of the band, “I’d just pack up the van and be gone.” “We love getting out there and meeting people,” says Chris. And with an album containing the skill and depth of Reveal, combined with a work ethic that has already paid the band dividends, it seems only a matter of time until Underwhelmed ascend to a level befitting their status as a truly great melodic hard rock band.

Last November is a diverse brew of quirky yet memorable pop rock accompanied by honest and thought provoking lyrics. Their ever growing internet presence, coupled with word-of-mouth from devoted fans, is pushing this young Atlanta band to true heights.
Under the guidance of platinum-selling producer Steven Haigler (Brand New, Fuel, Oleander, Pixies, As Tall as Lions), Last November’s new album, Over the Top or Under the Weather, delivers on the promise of the group’s impressive 2006 debut album, All the Gory Details, which was featured on The Real World, and other MTV shows, as well as garnering multi-formatted airplay on over 200 radio stations.
When we were in high school we used to sit around with acoustic guitars singing songs from Brand New’s, Deja Entendu, remembers Last November’s vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Luke Pilgrim. Working with the man who produced that record was a pretty surreal experience for us.
Luke Pilgrim, who began performing when he was 11, wrote most of the songs for the first album when he was still 15, and produced that disc himself. Now with a few more years under his belt, he brings an added maturity and experience to his writing. On Over the Top or Under the Weather, Steven Haigler’s sparkling production concentrates the band’s highly melodic vocals within edgy guitar inventions like The Bumper Sticker Song,the album’s first single and video.
The Bumper Sticker Song is really about finding someone who can love you in spite of all your flaws, weird hang ups, disorders, and overall neurotic, obsessive nature, says Pilgrim. I actually get emails from people asking if I really have A.D.D and O.C.D. I usually just tell them those are only a couple of my many disorders.
On the new CD, rockers like the wry Jesus Had Breakfast in Bed and Butter Me Up, with its Leslie-fied touches, demonstrate an astounding growth for Last November, while the superb Sunday Afternoon creates a lush landscape of baroque pop that is both hauntingly catchy and intelligent. Besides Luke Pilgrim on lead vocals and guitar, the band includes Tyler Ayers on bass and vocals; Zach Baxter on guitar; and Taylor Woodruff on drums and vocals.
Over the Top or Under the Weather is Last November’s second release on Southern Tracks Records, the independent label founded by legendary music publisher Bill Lowery. It was recorded and mixed at the renowned Southern Tracks Studio in Atlanta, home to such artists as Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Train, The Bravery, and Bruce Springsteen, and mastered by Rodney Mills (Butch Walker, Pearl Jam, Drive-By Truckers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.).
