Jackie and Martina take on John Mayer in this episode of Music Video Reform School.

“Shadow Days” is the first single from Mayer’s fifth studio album, “Born and Raised.” Mayer has described the song as the result of a lot of soul-searching that he did as he grew into adulthood. After some fairly disastrous public statements and interviews that had made him the butt of jokes and brought him the ire of many fans, he took a look inside himself and wrote these lyrics.

I can't believe that Karmin became so famous from being a YouTube sensation.

I watched her before, when she only had like a thousand views on her videos and I can't believe that she's so big now.

She and the guy are Karmin. People think her name is Karmin, but it's not.

"Nobody's Fool" is the second single from rock band Cinderella, released in 1986. It made it to number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100.

The music video features a Cinderella story, complete with wicked step-sisters in clock hats, and a midnight transformation. The storyline is so well hidden, however, that it is completely lost on most viewers who don't remember the band's previous video for "Shake Me" which showed the first part of the story. The Reform School Girls are no exception.

Why would you call yourself Cinderella?

In 1990, it would have been hard to miss the video for Warrant's "Cherry Pie." Featuring Model Bobbie Brown, the blatantly sexism and sexuality in the video got it banned from some networks but also brought the band overnight fame.

Strangely enough, the song was an after thought. When the album was nearly finished, Don Ienner (Columbia Records President at the time) called Jani Lane asking if he could write a Rock anthem similar to Aerosmith's "Love In An Elevator." Lane wrote the song in about 15 minutes, on a pizza box. Once recorded, the song became the title of the album, and the entire design and marketing followed suit. The track was such a huge hit, that it overshadowed the rest of the album.

This holds true for the Reform School girls, who seemed to like everything except the creepy big huge teeth and drummer Steven Sweet's hair.

I don't know anything else by them.

Felicia Day and some of her fellow cast members from The Guild have produced several music videos now, including "Do You Want To Date My Avatar," "Game On" and the latest, "I'm The One That's Cool."

In case you're unfamiliar, The Guild is an original web series that Day created, wrote and stars in, loosely based on her own life as a gaming enthusiast. It has won numerous awards for Best Series, Best Actress, Best Ensemble Cast, etc.

"I'm The One That's Cool" depicts the band members being tormented during high school, and their revenge (being the cool kids) today.

Day is about as cool as you can get - valedictorian of her senior class, an accomplished violinist who was accepted to Julliard, a double major (math and music performance) at U.T. Austin. She first rose to prominence as Violet on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The Reform School girls found the song catchy, but the video not so cool.

Holy Diver was released in August of 1983 as the first single from Dio's debut album of the same title. The video depicts Dio as a barbarian wandering through the ruins of a church with a sword, striking shrouded figures and turning them into rats. Following the September 11th attacks, the song was placed on the list of post-9/11 inappropriate titles distributed by Clear Channel. It's widely noted as one of the top Hard Rock songs of all time.

Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars team up for an eerie, haunting centerpiece to the soundtrack for The Hunger Games. If you're familiar with the story, it's easy to imagine Katniss and Prim with this song in the background.

Kevin Drew's dad was a DeeJay back in his native New Jersey, and by the time he was 14 he started borrowing dad's digital workstation and 8-track recorder to remix songs. His freshman year of high school he signed up for chorus, but dropped out after some taunting from his pals on the basketball team. His music wouldn't go away though, and by the time he was a senior he was back in the choir and writing catchy songs for the entire school to sing at pep rallies. He hasn't stopped writing and performing since.

"One" is his new single and video. The girls checked it out and here's some of what they said.

Jessie J began performing and formal performance education in her native United Kingdom at a young age, appearing in her first West End production by the time she was eleven. From the corn fields, to the clubs to a room filled with pink balloons, all is happy and beautiful in Selena Gomez' latest video "Hit The Lights."

Here are some impressions from the Reform School Girls.

My God, she's so gorgeous.

I love all the colors and styling in this video.

Obviously we give it an A+. 

The girls are back with a bit of after Christmas video viewing with a very interesting video from singer-songwriter Kina Grannis and her song "In Your Arms."

Kina Grannis is not your usual Rock star. She is a Summa Cum Laude Psych/Sociology graduate of USC, but her first love, music, was always at the center of her life. At the age of 4 she began performing for her stuffed animals at home, and she just never stopped. While still attending grade school in her native Mission Viejo, she was composing on piano for competitions. She is also a classically trained violinist. At 15 she picked up a guitar, the instrument that she plays most often now.

"In Your Arms" is from her latest album "Stairwells."

The video was made with stop-motion, using more than half-a-million Jelly Belly jelly beans.

Both of our reform school girls liked the video and gave it an A grade. Jackie liked the video more so than the song, while Martina liked both.

San Francisco Pop-Rockers Train gained prominence in 1998 with the song "Meet Virginia" from their self-titled debut album. The song hit #15 on the Billboard Charts. In 2001 they had a massive hit with "Drops of Jupiter."

Their latest album, "Save Me San Francisco," was released in 2009 and another big hit "Hey Soul Sister" brought them back into the limelight. The Christmas single, "Shake Up Christmas," is included on the Golden Gate edition of "Save Me San Francisco." It was featured in Coca Cola's Christmas commercial series in 2010, and was a #12 hit on the "Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks."

Jackie and Martina both gave this video an "A." They like original songs for Christmas, and both of them were singing along the first time they heard it. 

Run-D.M.C. began in the early 1980s when teenagers Joseph Simmons and Daryl McDaniels got together. Simmons' brother, Russell, managed Rapper Kurtis Blow, and recruited his younger sibling to DJ. He became "DJ Run, Son of Kurtis Blow." McDaniels got a set of turntables while he was still in high school, and began writing rhymes as "Easy D." Eventually the two of them began making music together, and when it came time to record they called on  Jason "Jam-Master Jay" Mizell to be their DJ. McDaniels was prevailed upon to change his stage name to "D.M.C." and their first record under the name Run-D.M.C. was released in 1983.

In 1986 the group teamed up with Aerosmith for a cover of "Walk This Way" that launched them into superstardom (and also helped to revive the Boston rockers' career).

"Christmas in Hollis" was recorded in 1987 for a complilation called "A Very Special Christmas" that was made to benefit the Special Olympics. It's since become a holiday classic, being featured in several films and television shows, and hitting the Billboard charts again in 2000, 13 years after its original release.

The song uses samples from "Frosty the Snowman," "Jingle Bells," "Joy to the World" and "Back Door Santa" (Clarence Carter's 1968 record).

Run-D.M.C. were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, only the second to be so honored (along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five). 

Martina loves this song. "This is probably one of my favorites off of his Christmas album, and his Christmas album is amazing." Under the Mistletoe includes a mix of some covers and some originals. This one is one of the originals. Fa La La is one of four songs from the album that will see video releases in the span of two weeks.

But the quality of the music isn't the only attraction. Mr. Bieber has the look, according to the Reform School Girls. "Omigod, I'm in love already!"

Jackie: "It's so cool that Boyz II Men are on this. They're so old school."

The girls keep obsessing on Bieber's looks. "I don't understand how someone can be so beautiful. Like, how was he born this way?"

"Our camera man is gagging right now..."

Jackie, once again, affirms her disdain for black and white videos and movies.

"I love his hair. He's definitely maturing so much."

"We're allowed to say that he's sexy now, 'cause he's almost 18."

Good looks don't carry the day though. Our reviewers find the video to be, in a word, boring. "Nothing's happening. Where's the Christmas trees and mistletoe and the girl he's supposed to be singing to?"

"I'm so bored," says Jackie. "At least have a wreath or something. There's no sign that this is a holiday video."

Though they clearly have Bieber fever, and generally like the other work of director Colin Tilley, this one gets a D or D+ at most. Sorry, Justin.

Girls’ Generation is often referred to as Soshi, or SNSD by international fans – an abbreviation of the group’s Korean name, So Nyeo Shi Dae. The nine members of Girls’ Generation are Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun. "The Boys" is their first relase in the U.S.

Martina and Jackie both liked the song and the video, noting that it's reminisent of the Pussycat Dolls. The clothes and futuristic sets also got thumbs up.

Asian girls really do bring the boys out, I'll tell you that.

Overall grade is a "B" (as in "boy") because the video ran a little long for their tastes.

"Too Much" was written by the Spice GIrls with Paul Wilson and Andy Watkins while the girls were filming scenes for the movie "Spice World." it was released on the group's second album "Spiceworld" in November 1997.

The video features each Spice Girl in her own individual scene playing one of hermovie fantasies.

It was released as the album's second single in December 1997, topping the UK Singles Chart for two weeks.

Jackie and Martina are both unabashed Spice Girls fans, and love this song. Though it brought back great childhood memories for them, they felt the video itself was "mediocre."

A few of their comments: 

• I miss this song so much.
• They all look like such babies.
• I was so little that I don't remember this at all.
• I don't either.
• I remember I had all the Barbies. I had every Spice Girls Barbie, and the Sporty Spice Barbie actually had a gold tooth.
• I could make a better video on my Mac.
• It was mediocre, but I still love you guys so much!

Blood On The Dance Floor is an Electronica band formed in 2007. In their latest video, Dahvie Vanity and Jayy Von Monroe team up with Lady Nogrady for "Bewitched." The result is hard to describe, except to say that it is creepy and colorful.

Jackie and Martina had comments like this:

"This song is really good, but this video, is very low budget."

"This song is one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. Honestly"

"This is Jayy. He's so beautiful."

Jayy is putting a spell on this necklace she's wearing

"He's so beautiful. I want to see him naked right now."

"Oh. Girl. You need to get your nails done."

"That was weird."

Both ladies gave the video an A.

The girls seemed to like this while it was playing, at least for awhile. They seemed to recognize several of the folks in the video, including famous YouTubers David Lehre (davelehre) and Blair Fowler (juicystar07). Also, they noted that the video is "so 90s" and they like the 90s. The hand motion dance moves also didn't go without praise.

But then, something went very, very wrong.

"He's actually the cutest one, but he's very gay, clearly."

"When you're in a Rock band and you're wearing eyeliner it's really hot, but when you're in a boy band, you shouldn't be wearing eyeliner."

"Baby, you and me. We have to be Facebook Official."

"I love their dancing."

"I kind of hate it."

"If you didn't know it was for real, you'd give it an A as a parody."

As it turns out, they settled on a C minus.

Is the joke on Reform School though? Is Heart2Heart a parody? Some think so. Lehre (a.k.a. CHAD FUTURE) is well known for his boy band parodies. Also, there is the over the top website and Facebook page, the cartoonish stage names (Chad Future, Nico, KX) etc., and there's this bit from the bio.

"Their group name stands for the connection they would like to have with their fans across the world."

If it isn't a parody, just kill me now. 

LIGHTS was born Valerie Anne Poxleitner in Timmins Ontario to parents who were missionaries. She thus spent much of her childhood traveling the world with them on mission. At the age of 11, she learned three chords on the guitar and set one of the Psalms to music with them. She's been writing ever since, eventually winning a Juno Award for her catchy Synthpop music.

The 24-year-old beauty had her name legally changed to LIGHTS when she turned 18 in order to signify that the first chapter of her life had come to a close and a new one had begun. She now resides in Tronto when not on tour.

The video for her new song "Toes" (from the album "Siberia") features locations around Toronto, including Dufferin Station.

Jackie and Martina liked this one quite a bit, mainly because they both adore LIGHTS, after having interviewed her on the Warped Tour a few years ago, and learning that she is soooo nice. They also admitted that during the interview there was a moment when they stopped to say "you're gorgeous!"

They also revealed that she's a nerd. Video games...WoW...you get the picture. But a nice, *pretty* nerd.

She earned a B from both of our reformers this time. "The video wasn't anything special, but it wasn't bad." 

Chickenfoot may not be a household name, but we guarantee you'll recognize some of the members. The band began in fun jam sessions between Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony of Van Halen, and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The trio was so named, according to Anthony, because "there are three talons on a chicken’s foot and there are three of us." Eventually they added a fourth member, the man Hagar considers "the best guitarist in the world," Joe Satriani.

Considered by many to be an American Rock Supergroup, it is all the more hilarious that Martina and Jackie didn't seem to realize who they were.

"It's recent, but it's made to look like old school."

"That guy looks like the guy from Nickelback."

"That guy's hair is really gross."

"Chickens are not the most attractive animals."

"Is this a KFC commercial?"

"This song is actually pretty bad."

Ultimate grade? Jackie would likely have failed the video, if it weren't for the last minute fate of the guy in the chicken suit. We won't spoil it by telling you what happens. You'll have to watch the video to find out.

As it is, she gave the video a D. Martina seemed to get into it at the end and was generous with her B, bringing the composite grade up to a C.

What would they have given the vid if they'd known who the guys in the band were? We'll never know.

Nominated for three Grammy Awards (so far), Sara Bareilles has been singing since she was a child, and performing in choir, musical theatre productions and a cappella groups from her teenage years. Her vocal range and abilities on the piano have drawn comparisons to Fiona Apple and Norah Jones, but her pop sensibilities are more akin to Etta James.

Her last studio album, "Kaleidoscope Heart," rose to number one on the Billboard album charts after it's release a year ago. She penned all 13 tracks on the album, including "Gonna Get Over You" which is the latest single and video (co-written with Sam Farrar of Phantom Planet).

Jackie and Martina were pretty ambivalent about this video, liking the song, but not so much the fashion and pace.

"Did Amy Winehouse just come back from the dead?"

"Ew. Those shoes."

That half tucked-in tee shirt? "I can't watch this. I just want to pull it out."

"This is like Grease for 2015..."

"...in a Mexican grocery."

"I'm ready for this to be done. Tick tock."

"Cool concept, but it went on for a really long time."

"We like you, but we don't like this. Sorry, girl."

Reform School Grade - D 

Motley Crue has failed reform school before, and now they've done it again.

"Too Young To Fall In Love" (written by Nikki Sixx) was included on the band's 1983 sophomore release "Shout at the Devil." It was released in April of 1984 as a single, following up "Looks That Kill" which came out in January of that year. It hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and rose to #26 on the Mainstream Rock chart. Now considered to be a definitive example of 1980s Heavy Metal, the album and these two videos helped Motley Crue find a worldwide audience and gain widespread popularity for the first time.

So, what's wrong with this video?

Jackie and Martina admit to having something of a love/hate relationship with 80s videos, but this one has little to love. There is no detectable storyline, despite the strange Kung Fu temple or Chinatown bordello or opium den (or whatever it is) sets and characters.

Three observations from Martina and Jackie sum it up.

1) I don't understand this video at all.

2) These sound effects are awful.

3) This made no sense.

Sorry, Motley Crue. You not only flunked, you're grounded until further notice. 

In 1999, Smash Mouth recorded a song written by their lead guitarist Greg Camp that would become one of their most successful records, and an anthm of sorts for the new millenium. "All Star" rose to #2 on the Billboard Alternative chart and #4 on the Hot 100. It was featured in six films, beginning with 1999's "Mystery Men." The stars of the movie (including William H. Macy, Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, Kel Mitchell and Janeane Garofalo) all appear in the music video.

The video is actually a send-up of the movie, where a group of minor (and sometimes inept) superheroes must save the world. Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell moves through the streets of Hollywood's Colonial Street, performing heroic acts and superhuman feats - and generally saving the day.

Jackie and Martina love the song, and think the video is fun, giving it an A- and an A, respectively. Their characterization of Harwell as "a cross between Uncle Kracker and Bubba Sparxxx with Mark Hoppus' voice" is classic Reform School.

The New Kids on the Block were formed in the early 1980s when songwriter Maurice Star went looking to form a "white version of New Edition." He first found Donnie Wahlberg, who recommended his younger brother Mark and his friend Danny Wood. The trio convinced Jordan and Jonathan Knight to join us as well, and the quintet was born.

The NKOTB's second album "Hangin' Tough" was released in 1988, and by the early part of 1989, thanks to heavy video play on MTV, "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" was a sudden hit. It reached #1 on both the British and Australian charts, and #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Before the year was over, the album would climb to #1 on Billboard, and go platinum 8 times.

"Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh" was a refrain that you couldn't avoid in 1989. It was everywhere.

So how do Martina and Jackie like this one?

"They're so little! What year was this? I'm so used to seeing them now..."

"This is soooo 80s. Look at the ripped pants in the back."

"Here's what's missing in so many music videos today - choreography. That's what music videos were all about back then."

"Now it's all storylines and plots - which is good, but I feel like if you're watching a video for the fun of it, you want it to just be dancing and singing."

"They're so hot - with their little leather jackets!"

They gave the video a "C" overall. As Martina put it, "Kinda blah. Sorry."

Starting Six have been growing a real following in the Bay Area, but aren't that well known beyond it - yet. "Thirsty" helped them get some exposure on the Net and put them on the way to breaking large.

The six members of the Six met at their high school in Berkeley, and began making music together for fun. Since then Six member (and producer) NicNac has worked with artists such as Bobby Brackins, Dem Franchize Boyz and Young Murph - and the group collaborates regularly with other mainstays of the Bay Area Rap scene.

The band is Big Steve (Steven Yaris), Fess (Robert Stewart), Grey Goose (Greyson Tarantino), Riggz (Jared Richmond), NicNac (Nicholas Naculous)  and RyBread (Ryan Bremond).

How do Martina and Jackie like the video for "Thirsty?" They dig the Starting Six themselves.

Martina: "He's like, really, really hot."

Jackie: "How cute are the little glasses?"

Not so much the women, though.

"I have one comment for you guys. Your girls are not attractive. 

We can be in your video, without cellulite."

"Yeah. Call us."

"Video hoes: Stop smacking your gum when you're shooting a music video. You just look stupid."

"I love the song though."

The video also gets high marks for self-effacing humor. "We know they're making fun. Look at the car. As long as you don't take yourselves too seriously, then it's all good."

The song gets an A. The video, a B+. How do you make it an A? Call Jackie and Martina! A+! 

Eight-year-old Atlanta native MattyB (Matthew Morris) has been making Rap videos for nearly a year now. Initially they were covers of songs by the likes of Rihanna, Willow Smith, Ke$ha and Justin Bieber, but now he also writes his own lyrics, sometimes with the help of his 19-year-old cousin Mars. His very first YouTube video quickly got more than half-a-million views.

MattyB's mom says that at this point he's still too young to tour, which is a disappointment to Jackie and Martina, who say that although it would be weird of them to go see him, they'd still go.

The video for "Sugar Sugar" was filmed at MattyB's grandma's retirement home for her birthday party - or at least that's what he says.

 It's Reform School versus Madison Bray: "Girl Swag On." 

Stop the madness. Stop the madness NOW.

Once upon a time, there was a company called "Ark Music Factory." It set out to be "an online platform that helps young artists achieve their dreams, and realize their talent." Offering "the right songs, music composition, branding" and video production, the company said that it provided young talent with "all the tools to become a pop star."

And, behold, one of their "young talents" had a video that went viral. Her name was Rebecca Black.

Apparently, "Friday" wasn't enough of an assault on our sensibilities though. Now Ark has produced a video from a 9-year-old named Madison Bray. Let's take a look at some of the lyrics, shall we?

“People wanna wanna call me a diva. See me, see me got the keys to my beemer.”

The song is called "Girl Swag" and, yes, it is Rap - the sort of swaggering, sneering, threatening, one-upping Rap that has become pervasive. So, imagine all that attitude captured in a video depicting a posse of pre-teenage girls as playground bullies. They gonna mess you up if you steps to them.

Don't even get us started with the rhymes. "Diva" and "beemer?" Also, can 9-year-olds drive these days?

Yes..."the right songs, branding" and all that...

Perhaps they meant "branded for life."

Parents of America: You don't have to sign those legal releases, you know. Please stop subjecting your children - talented though they may be, the little darlings - to a lifetime of ridicule because of your momentary lapse in judgment. Just, please...stop.

When "Friday" went viral, it was one of those "so bad, it's good" moments. You were okay. Maybe even, dare we say, cute. The many versions of the song that glommed on afterward helped to stoke the fire. By gosh, they're just regular kids - *real* kids - and they have a right to be famous too. Cute, cute, cute. Fun, even.

So, then they did the song on Glee. Uhm, okay. Cute, kind of. Fun.

So, you donated any profits for the song to Japanese disaster relief. Okay, yeah...that was nice.

Here's the thing though. What you had going for you was that the video looked exactly like what it was. It was this family-financed expression of teenage hopefulness, and it sort of worked and it was cute and there you go.

Now you have this new video, "My Moment." Hooo, boy. Where to even start?

Once the lawyers and the professional producers and promoters and everybody get involved, the "product" is supposed to get better. A lot of times it doesn't, but it's supposed to.

I mean, your voice is pleasant enough, and the first time you bat your eyelashes it's, well, cute. And you have a "winning attitude" whatever that means, and you have potential maybe. But three minutes and 26 seconds of that doesn't really make it.

What? What's that you say?

What were we saying? Oh, yeah. The point is, we don't hate you. At least not yet. And we're truly thankful that your overnight fame didn't result in some sort of need to emulate Lindsay Lohan. Really and truly. But if this video is as good as it's going to get, we think that "your moment" has come and gone.

Forever The Sickest Kids is a pop punk band from Texas founded by  Jonathan Cook (lead vocals), Austin Bello (bass, backing vocals), Kyle Burns (drums, percussion), Kent Garrison (keyboards), Marc Stewart (guitar), and Caleb Turman (guitar, backing vocals). The band became by accident. Lead singer Jonathan Cook accidently spent $350 that the band didn't have to receive a front page placement on the PureVolume website for a song they didn't have. In a few days, the band wrote and recorded the song "Hey Brittany", and it became a major hit. After a frenzied bidding war for the group, they signed to Universal Mowtown. They have released an EP and 2 full length releases, with their latest being the self-titled Forever The Sickest Kids. In January of 2011, Kent Garrison revealed that he was leaving the band.

The woman that would come to be known as Katy Perry was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, Ca. on October 25, 1984 to pastor parents. She grew up listening to gospel music, and singing in her church choir.

She got her GED during her first year of high school, and decided to start a career in music. As "Katy Hudson", she released a self-titled gospel album in 2001, but it failed after her record label closed. Over the next few years, she tried to release other material, but nothing was successful. It was only after she signed with Capitol Music Group in 2007, that her luck started to change. She changed her name to Katy Perry, and released the Single, "Ur So Gay." The song gained attention, but failed to chart. She got her first real success in 2008 with the release of the single "I Kissed A Girl", which was followed by the release of the album. One Of The Boys later that year. She followed that with her second album, Teenage Dream in August of 2010. It spawned several hit songs, including: "California Gurls", "Teenage Dream", and "Firework", which all topped the Billboard Top 100.

I See Stars is a post-hardcore band that formed in Warren, Michigan in 2006. They released their debut album, 3D, in 2009. The album featured a guest appearance from Bizzy Bone of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and peaked at #176 on the Billboard 200. 

The covered The Outfield song "Your Love" for the Fearless Records Compliation Punk Goes Classic Rock. They also had their song "Comfortably Confused" featured in the video game Power Gig: Rise of the SixString.

They recently released their second album, The End of the World Party.
