Today we talk about the transistor radio and how it freed people to listen wherever they wanted.

Salty Brine was one of my very first heroes. He was bigger than life. Always cheerful. He exposed me to music from Brenda Lee to the Beatles. I enjoyed listening to him every morning. I dedicate this show to him. He appealed to young and old. He was one of the last DJ's to do that as music got more categorized and radio stations decided to play only one tiny slice of the pie

(The founding members were in the 80's group Split Enz)

Genesis performed well at Live Earth. Phil Collins looks very buff. They got down to business and just played.

I enjoyed the tips that were given in between the sets. Go to http://www.liveearth.org/ for more info on what you can do

The Alternative Top 100-- We take out some of the tops groups like Beatles, Pink Floyd, Stones, Eagles and the such. Let's see who would be in the top 100 if they weren't blocked by Zeppelin.

Cement. All podcasts will be cancelled if Michael is given the gift of Cement.

Wild Turkey was helmed by Glenn Cornick from Jethro Tull. They put out an album called Battle Hymn. If you find it, get it. It is a great album.

Atomic Rooster was an underrated Group from the UK. They had some fame, but not what they could've had. Carl Palmer was the original drummer. He left in 1970 to join Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Vincent Crane, the leader of the group, went on in the 80's to join Dexies Midnight Runners (Come'n Eileen) He sadly commited suicide.

Send us some of your lesser known artists from the 60's and 70's as we compile a list.

 <itunes:author>Michael Duffys</itunes:author>

The Traveling Wilburys was a SuperGroup. 5 Musicians (6 if you count Jim Keltner the Drummer) All famous in their own right. Casual friends that decided to do some background vocals on George Harrison's song, Handle With Care. Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. Then, I believe, Jeff Lynne invites Roy Orbison. Everyone was in awe of Roy. The other four had a great respect for each other and there were many combinations of collaboration in the past.

The first album was rife with 6 and 12 string acoustic numbers. Four accomplished guitar players, professionals. Then add the production values of Jeff Lynne. And a hit album is bound to happen. And it did.

Now about 20 years later, their two albums have been put together to make the definitive collection with a sprinkling of bonus cuts.

The quality that I love about the album is that it looked like egos were left on the porch. And together made some great music.

The Beatles and the Beach Boys started out with the 2-3 minute simple songs. Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper turned the song into something much bigger. A tapestry of sound -- harmonies and instruments.

The Beatles and the Beach Boys had a friendly rivalry. Paul McCartney has said that Pet Sounds had a big influence on what was to become Sgt. Pepper. Brian Wilson planned an album called, Smile for the Beach Boys, but cancelled it. (He did go into the studio and finally record the album on his own about 35 years later.

The Beatles and the Rolling Stones were more cooperative than competitive. On the Sgt Pepper album cover, you will see a doll with "welcome the Rolling Stones" written on the front. The Stones returned the nod on their Their Satanic Majesties Request album by hiding the faces of the Beatles on the cover of their album.

Sgt Pepper raised the bar for other artists AND it opened doors of creativity. It's okay to experiment with the likes of an Oboe or a Violin. You were now more than songwriter or storyteller, you were an artist painting with musical instruments. And they did it without the luxury of 24 track!!

Give us your feedback. We want to know what you think of Pepper and it's influence.

iTunes has finally introduced the DRM-free music called, iTunes Plus. Higher quality and not locked into any copying restrictions. One of the first artists to hop on board is Paul McCartney. His entire back catalogue is now available. Most of his albums include some bonus tracks, usually singles and b-sides.

Is this the precursor to the Beatles hopping on iTunes? Well a recent article on whatgoeson.com quotes George Harrison's widow, Olivia as saying that they will not be available until sometime in 2008

Oddsmakers in the UK are predicting that Hey Jude will be the Beatles' first number one hit in the digital arena. In the UK, digital downloads are counted toward the top 40 singles. So they could make the top 10 all over again.

Daniel joins us to challenge the two Michaels. He will either set us straight or we will go round his house late at night and throw rocks in his window.

Exile on Main St. -- what a great album. Shows that a group can do a blues album and still be popular. The Stones were rooted in Blues songs and this album is one of their best.

Tubular Bells was a popular album in the early 70's. A segment of it was used in, I believe, The Exorcist. It was one song covering the whole album and was about 50 minutes in length.

Led Zeppelin. I love their first album. I Can't Quit You and How Many More Times are great songs showing what this group was going to become. It has some great Zep standards, Communication Breakdown, Good Times, Bad Times and Dazed and Confused.

My rant on Classic Rock stations. They rotate a very small number of songs compared to the multitude of great songs that they could pick from.

And what would a Zeppelin discussion be, witho

20 Aqualung my Friend

 <itunes:author>Michael Duffys</itunes:author>

Jethro Tull.

May 15th 1971 (March, 1971 in the UK) brought Aqualung to vinyl. An FM favorite, Jethro Tull was about to break through in the United States. Labeled Progressive Rock, which was a label for bands that spread their wings over multiple genres of music. Tull mixed Blues and Jazz into their Rock group for a pleasant and enjoyable mix. The late 60’s saw more traditional instruments coming into the mix. Ian Anderson, the leader, would give the flute prominence in rock.

Their first three albums, among some of my all time favorites, saw some personnel changes and a band growing into their own. Someone named Jeffery would make it into a song on each album. That mystery would be revealed when Jeffery Hammond Hammond joined the band a few years later. Benefit, album number three, had more leanings into Rock, not abandoning the Blues, just integrating into the Jethro Tull sound.

Aqualung was played strongly on the FM stations and was fast getting on the must have album list. Some stations in the US got copies from the UK, where the album was released two months earlier. I had the good fortune of getting my copy in Belfast when I was visiting the other Michael. Locomotion Breath with Martin Barre’s classic riff has the same freshness today that it did some 35 years ago.

Ironically, Aqualung would not give them a needed single for top 40, nor would the album go to number one. Thick as a Brick, their followup, would make it to number one. And about 18 months after Aqualung would come their first single, Living in the Past.

Tull would move into a more traditional folk mode years later. Yet Aqualung is still strong and vital today.
