It's the first weekend of the month, and that means a live set! It's one of the things I got the most excited about every month. Recent shows have featured performances from everyone from Atari Teenage Riot to Zion Train.

Today on solipsistic NATION were going to hear a live in-studio performance from MSSNGDGTS (88:88). But first we're going to hear select tracks from 88:88's The Grey album, which you can download absolutely for free!

EJ Peter is 88:88 and it's kind of cool how he came to be on today's show.

I've been hard at work preparing future live sets for solipsistic NATION but I didn't see the forest for the trees. The weekend was fast approaching and I had zip. So I did what I always do when I'm in a jam like that: I went on Twitter and asked if anyone had a live set they'd like to share on solipsistic NATION. And out of the blue, 88:88 came through. In fact, he's recording his live set for us as I type these very words. That's how fresh this show is! And it's also a perfect example of how social media makes this show happen.

I actually played a track from EJ a few months ago when I was doing a segment on the Future Sounds of San Diego compilation album. There were a lot of great tracks on the album but 88:88's "Dub-Hop" immediately caught my attention so it's a nice bit of synchronicity that he's on today's show.

Artoffact Records is a Canadian label based in Toronto that has released over 100 industrial, synthpop, rock, and metal albums since the label was founded in 1999. I listen to a lot of music but when it's a release from Artoffact, I take notice because it's bound to be great. Some of my personal faves have been Alice in Videoland, Massiv in Mensch, and, more recently, Saltillo. Artoffact consistently releases such great music that it's a crime I have showcased their label by now.

Jacek Kozlowski is the founder of Artoffact Records and he's been kind enough to put together a mix of tracks from his label featuring some crucial releases from 2011 and 2012. He was also cool enough to talk shop about Artoffact and the music industry in general.

When I first started showcasing labels on solipsistic NATION I think I was caught up in the romance of what it would be like to run a label. But as the years have gone by I've come to realize how much sweat equity it takes to run a music label. No sane person would spend that much time and energy in such an endeavour. No, point of fact, it takes passion. So I guesss the romance is still there, after all.

Anyway, to get back to my point, as I've come to appreciate the hard work that goes into running a label I've begun what, I hope, are very pragmatic questions. How do you sign an artist and who do you develop that artist once you do. Practicalities aside, there's also the art of being managing artists. I'm generalizing here but most musicians I've met will gladly go on and on why they lovingly and painstaking purchased the gear they have or give a spur of the moment dissertation on their art and their music but it's another thing entirely when it comes to the quotidian business of being, well... business.

Hey, cut me some slack here. I said I was generalizing.

Jacek gave some very insightful and considered answers to my questions on today's show. He also delivered some kick ass tunes so enjoy! Welcome to 2012! According to a pop interpretation of the Mayan calendar we're going to go face-to-face with the apocalypse that we've all secretly hoping would finally happen. If you believe that sort of thing.

Here at solipsistic NATION we're going to kick off the new year the same way we kick off each month: a live performance from an electronic music. But instead of one performance, we're going to hear two! One from Pimmon and one from Landcrash.

Both Pimmon and Landcrash appeared on the Soft edition solipsistic NATION back in December. That was a great show and Landcrash and Pimmon's music really moved me. I asked if they'd be interested in coming on the show with some recorded live material. They both said yes and sent me their live sets, tout suite!

Paul Gough is Pimmon and he's prepared a special in-studio live performance for us. Daniel Hopkins is Landcrash and we'll hear his live set recorded at the White Star. Their music is both beautiful and utterly haunted.

Since they both explore the same sonic territory and are both on labels I really enjoy (12K and the Feedbackloop Label), I decided to feature their live sets on one show. It's also the reason why I asked them similar questions and it was pretty interesting to hear how their sensibilities differed and converged.

I'm quite certain that the cold I'm suffering from is not, in fact, a cold. It's something far more sinister and deadly. I'm convinced that I've contracted some alien contagion aloft some weird vector that will begin the zombie apocalypse beginning with me: patient zero!

Okay, it's not that bad. I just wanted to add a bit of drama to today's show. I am sick, though, so by necessity I'm going to be brief.

For the last couple of weeks I've been listening to the very excellent King Deluxe Presents: Year One compilation album. As the title implies the album is a celebration of King Deluxe's first year as a label.

I usually wait until a label has been around a couple of years and had more releases under their belt before showcasing them on solipsistic NATION, but I thought it would be a shame not to turn you on to King Deluxe. That way you can say knew about them way back when when.

While King Deluxe is a collective it is effectively run by PK, the label's founder, and he joins us today from his home in British Colombia.

Also joining us from San Diego is Miguel Vega, who is the founder of Dataset Clothing, which also happens to be a label that has just released the Future Sounds of San Diego compilation album. EshOne gave me the skinny on this album some months ago but even so I was still surprised to find that there were a lot of artists on the album I didn't recognize. I've dissed San Diego in the past for not having much of an electronic music scene but can admit when I'm wrong and eat some crow.

Today on solipsistic NATION we're going to select tracks from Immigrant Breast Nest, a wonderful netlabel that was founded to present NYC’s best in weird, mostly electronic, underground music.

Bit of background on today's show.

Dan Abatemarco and fellow musician and partner in crime, David B. Applegate, are the agent provocateurs of Immigrant Brest Nest and they join us today to tell us more about their label.

I first met Dan back in 2010 when I was putting together a semgent about people who were making music with iPods, Iphones and iPads. Performing as Speak Onion he was creating some gnarly noise that shredded my eardrums. Anyone can make noise. Dan was making noise to make music. I was so impressed with Dans music that I later invited him to return to solipsistic NATION with a recording of his live set recorded at the Charleston in Brooklyn for Immigrant Breast Nest‘s record release party, and that's when I first learned of his label. I was blown away with the diversity and the quality of the artists on their label that I knew it was just a matter of time before I would showcase Immigrant Breast Nest on solipsistic NATION.

I live in San Diego but I hail from Boston. San Diego has been my home for the last 11 years but at heart, I'm a New Englander. As much as San Diego is a paradise to live in, it will never quite feel like home to me like Massachusetts does. After all this time I'm still amazed to see big, cowboy skies and palm trees every day.

I don't think I'll ever get used to it because I'll forever be comparing it and contrasting it to New England. It's just something that's been imprinted on me.

With winter fast approaching I feel even more bewildered. I'm used to gloomy, biting cold and endless days of snow, not going about in t-shirts, shorts and sandals. And while I don't miss any of that I do miss other things about winter, like how snowfall seems to mute sound, while sub zero temperatures seems to crystallize it. And I miss the way winter can bring on a kind of bittersweet frame of mind.

Living in sunny San Diego I have to really go out of my way to tap into that state of mind and today's show is a sonic touchstone to that place, in only that magical way that music can reach.

When I was gathering the songs for today's show over the last couple of months I didn't have any of that in mind. Quite honestly, I was just setting aside songs in a folder in iTunes that just seemed to fit together well. It wasn't until I began working on the mix for today's show that it became apparent what the show actually wanted to be.

I remember one winter night when I was a boy. I was an angry and unhappy kid because my parent's marriage was falling apart. I had all these intense emotions and conflicts that I didn't know what to do with. But I remember one night where I left the house after a terrible argument with my mom. I walked around for a while and then found myself at a local pond that was frozen over and covered with snow. It calmed me. So I walked to the center of the pond, lay down and watched the snow fall from sky.

It was late, and I was far away from any roads. It was quiet and I was completely alone and all the confusion and anger just melted away.

And that's what today's show wants to be: a touchstone to that moment.

At least, that's what it is for me. It will be something entirely different for you. And that's part of the magic of today's show.

On today's show we're listening to select tracks from Electroton. We'll also talk with the label's founder, Martin Weiss.

I've only recently discovered Electroton and I've loved everything I've heard from Martin's label. Electroton is one of those labels that tends to favor music that seamlessly blends noise with minimalistic beats. On the surface that's no reason to get excited about the label but the trick that Electroton has managed to pull off is make noise and minimalistic beats warm and human. Something that you'd go out of your way to listen to.

I featured some tracks from Electroton back in June. Since that show I've been meaning to have Martin on the show to talk with us and share more music from his label. It took a couple of months so I'm happy to that our schedules finally worked out so that we could arrange some time to talk.

If you're a regular listener to solipsistic NATION I also want to apologize for getting some of the shows out late the last two months. I appreciate your patience and I should be back on track in the next few weeks.

On today's show we're going to hear Mobthrow rocking it live at the Riddim Collision Festival in Lyon to celebrate Ad Noiseam's 10 year anniversary!

I've been a fan of Ad Noiseam for quite a while and for good reason. Ad Noiseam consistently releases great music. It's that simple. And while Ad Noiseam obvioulsy has a love for breakbeat and dubstep with releases from the likes of Enduser and Bong-Ra it also embraces ambient and experimental music as well, with releases from folks like Wilt and The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation.

Nicolas Chevreux is the founder of Ad Noiseam and you can hear my interview with him and more music from his label here.

I've been a fan of Mobthrow almost as long as I've been a fan of Ad Noiseam.

A few years back I had Kostas from Subheim to talk about his now defunct label, Spectraliquid, and while he was on the show he played some great music from Blackfilm, Cardopusher and Ebola. One of the artists that was also featured on the show was Mobthrow and even in a mix of great music his tracks stood out.

Mobthrow had some great beats and rhythms but it was tinged with a lot of moody atmospherics and some of his tracks were downright noirish. With the release of his first full length album, Mobthrow's music has not only become grander in scale but somehow, at the same time, even more intimate.

Angelos Liaros is Mobthrow and he joins us today by phone from Berlin to talk about his latest album and his live set at the Riddim Collision Festival for Ad Noiseam's 10 year anniversary.

Today on solipsistic NATION we'll talk with Charles Smith, the co-founder and COO of exfm, an online musical service that I'm very excited about. As you browse the web exfm gathers every MP3 file that you come across and builds a music library for you that you can share with your friends.

I don't get to listen to much music that way because I'm already up to my neck with music that is constantly being sent my way. I do, however, love the idea and I spend a couple of hours every week listening to music selected by people I know on exfm. In fact, today's show was inspired by music I heard from Charles and Murat Esmer on exfm.

Stuntdouble has been my friend for just about as long as I've been in San Diego. While he wears his heart on his sleeve the man has got hidden depths and during the time I've known him he's been polishing his flow, alchemically transferring his words into your brain. And it doesn't hurt when you have someone like Tenshun crafting your beats. The guy makes his own vinyl, for crying out loud!

One of the things I love about hip hop and punk is that it tends to be intensely regional. I hail from Boston, so it's hard for me to see San Diego as anythng other than a slice of paradise. Stuntdouble and Tenshun really brought their A game on The Ballad of Shawn T. Nelson and it's densely packed with rhymes and beats and their track "Enemy" kicks off today's show.

We'll also hear "Quietus" by Meat Beat Manifesto from their new album, Answers Come in Dreams. Jack Dangers is the man behind Meat Beat Manifesto and he came on the show to talk about Answers Come in Dreams last February and you can listen to that show here.

We'll also listen to "In The Throes Of It" by Roots Manuva from his new album, 4everevolution. I've been a fan of Roots Manuva since his 1999 release, Brand New Second Hand, and the reason I've been such a big fan is because he's not afraid to take chances with his music and his musical and lyrical ability has really grown because of that.

"Mascot And The Moth" is by Boom Bip. Bryan Charles Hollon is Boom Bip and "Mascot And The Moth" comes from his new album, Zig Zaj.

"It's Up There" is by The Field from their new album, Looping State Of Mind. Axel Willner is The Field and I was turned on to him by Amy Grill when we talked about her docoumentary, Speaking in Code. In Speaking in Code Amy followed the lives of several different musicians such as Monolake, Modeselektor and Axel. You can find that show here.

We also hear the Unkle Surrender Sounds Session #16 of Trentemøller's "Neverglade" from Trentemøller's Reworked/Remixed album. As always, Trentemøller's music is brooding and gorgeous.

"Dead Guitars" is by Seefeel from their self-titled album that was released last year on Warp Records.

From The Chemical Brothers' Further album we'll hear the tracks "Escape Velocity" and "Snow" featuring the dreamy vocals of Stephanie Dosen.

"Dictaphone's Lament" is by Tycho from his 2010 release, Past & Present and we're going to close today's show with "Disappear" by Phutureprimitive. "Disappear" comes from Phutureprimitive's Kinetik album and he was on the show just a few months ago to talk about his new album. [tlr] makes his triumphant return on solipsistic NATION as NVR-NDR with a special live set and a handful of studio tracks from his Extreme Hyper Impact album!

[tlr], you may recall, was on the show this time last year with a mix of select tracks from the Magicore blog he runs with tooth_eye and Phil. That show was one of my favorite from solipsistic NATION in 2010 because it was so fun, imaginative and exhilirating. Magicore is a genre that exists solely in [tlr]'s head so I was thrilled when he alchemically transmuted his imagination into reality with the release of his Extreme Hyper Impact album. I admit it, I want to live in [tlr]'s world, anime exagerated eyes and speed lines and all. If you like what you hear then why not spend a few bucks on [tlr]'s album so we can all live in his world.

Some quick apologies before I go.

Today's show was actually supposed to go out two weeks ago. solipsistic NATION is a labor of love but sometimes the demands of day-to-day life intrude on the show. So here's the pitch: 100 songs on one show.

This show has been brewing for, I don't know, the last three or four years. Since solipsistic NATION was first launched I've accumulated a huge library of music. To be honest, at this point it's a constant deluge and I'll never catch up with it. There's only so many hours in a day.

Anyway, not only do I have this huge library of music to choose from to put together each show I've also got a lot of tracks that clock in at a minute or less. At some point it seemed obvious that I should put together a mix of just those brief tracks. In fact, I've tried to do this show several times in the past but it never gelled. I almost gave up on the idea but last weekend I rolled up my sleeves and gave it another shot and what do you know, it finally came together!

It was still a Herculean task, though. As you might have noticed, last weekend's show didn't go out, so Cyclopean was this project. But after much sweat and blood I stand before you diminished, but I stand before you nonetheless with, one show with 100 songs.

What I like about today's show is that these tracks are more fragments of songs than a song proper. They suggest a song. And since there are so many tracks, I can explore a lot of different moods and ideas very quickly. So much so that the show seems more like an auditory hallucination that a mix. At least that's how it feels from over here in the solipsistic NATION studios.

By listener request I was planning to showcase the Moment Sound record label, but due to scheduling conflicts and a blackout that took half of the west coast, I was left in the lurch without a show. I love a lot of music, and I love a lot of bands but if you asked me to pick just one, I had have to say that it's The Beatles. Hands down. And I suspect it's the same with David.

I've been a fan of David's music since his Bollyhood Bass album was released back in 2010. Feels weird saying that because I feel that some how I've always been listening to David. Some musicians are just that way, you know?

Since I don't have any guests on this week's show so I guess I'll take this opportunity to ramble.

Today my friend Sandi and I were out driving to go grab a bite to eat. While we were waiting at a stop light a SUV pulled up next to us and playing some bass thumpingly track. It's not the sort of thing I ordinarily enjoy but I liked it. I think I said those very words to Sandi.

"Who do you think it is?" she asked.

I pulled out my phone, flicked through a few screens and activated Shazam. Just as I stuck my phone out the window the SUV sped away. I think Shazam only heard three seconds of whatever the SUV was playing and within seconds I had my answer: it was Foz Tee's "Shakin' It for Daddy" featuring Nicki Minaj and Robin Thicke. I clicked the button to buy the track from iTunes and in a minute or two it was on my eager little phone.

Think about that for a moment.

I just stuck my hand out the window, heard a fragment of a song and a few minutes later we're listening to it on our car. And we take that sort of thing for granted. That's amazing! It's almost magical. I can't believe I live in a world where something like that is not only possible, but mundane.

Playing the best of all genres of electronic music means exploring new labels. Just last week, for example, we heard some wonderful stuff from Ember Music.

Playing the best of all genres of electronic music also means playing recordings of live performances and in the last few months we've heard concerts from Zion Train, Matta and Speak Onion.

Playing the best of all genres of electronic music also means exploring the history of electronic music, and the history of electronic music is remarkably dense when you consider just how brief that history is.

Quick sidebar: my net friend Jeremy Meyers turned me on to an excellent article by NPR's Michaelangelo Matos about how the major labels sold 'electronica' to America. It covers a lot of the same ground I've been exploring in the last few week's on the show as well as some excellent reportage of big beat acts like The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers.

My own history with electronic music probably began with Kraftwerk's Autobahn album back in 1974, but my relationship with electronic music really blossomed in the early 1990s with compilation albums like Waveform Records' AD series and Caroline and Astralwerks' Excursions in Ambience compilation albums and Beyond Records Ambient Dub compilation albums. Those albums really transformed what ambient and dub and electronic music could be and introduced me to a lot of other musicians and labels.

The last few months I've been exploring that period in the history of electronic music on solipsistic NATION and I've had the pleasure of talking with Forest from Waveform Records and Brian Long, who curated the Excursions in Ambience compilation series.

On today's show we're going to continue that exploration by talking with Kim Cascone about his From Here to Tranquility compilation album series from Silent Records and playing select tracks from those albums.

The From Here to Tranquility albums were particularly special to me because as much as I loved the AD and the Excursions albums, I didn't think they were very ambient. The Tranquility albums, on the other hand, may have had a few chillroom rave type of tracks, but the thrust of the series was primarily ambient, and the ambient music that the Tranquility albums seemed to favor had a weird, science fiction vibe to it, which was a lot different from the psychedelic earthiness of Brian Eno's On Land album that I was used to. Nevertheless, the Tranquility albums challenged and shattered my preconceptions of what ambient music could be.

Each Tranquility album was special and each album further expanded the horizons of ambient music.

The From Here to Tranquility compilation albums are just one phase in Silent Records own history, which in turn is just a brief chapter in Kim's life. Even so, those albums are magical and timeless and I'm really excited to share them with you, and if you've already heard them before, to re-introduce you to those albums.

We'll have Kim back in a few months to dig more into the history of Silent Records.

One of the things that thrills me most about the label showcase on solipsistic NATION is that it gives me the opportunity to discover even more new music with a mix that is is lovingly handpicked by the labels founders. In today's case that would be Kurt Lorenz and Bill Bendrot of Ember Music.

Ember Music is an artist-run label and I think that's the other reason I'm excited in particular about today's show. Not only are there more and more labels releasing great electronic music but music labels are also quickly mutating and exploring just exactly what a label is supposed to be. Clearly, the monolithic major labels that ruled the industry for so many decades is a thing of the past. Oh, they're still there, lumbering about desperately trying to evolve to the new environment that the asteroid that is the internet has created. Now is the time for smaller, more nimble labels to flourish in their particular niche in the ecology of electronic music. In Ember Music's case it's distributing music through services like SoundCloud and Bandcamp on behalf of the artists on their roster and giving the talent the lion's share of the revenue. Refreshing, huh?

I mention that because Ember Music really is a wonderful label and if you enjoy any of the music you hear on today's show then I encourage to purchase just one track by one of the artists from today's mix. Speak Onion is Dan Abatemarco and Dan was our guest on last year's show about music made with iPods, iPhones and iPads. Dan's back again with a live set recorded at the Charleston in Brooklyn for Immigrant Breast Nest's record release party.

Dan's music has elements of breakcore and drum and bass in it but what Dan is really about is unleashing gnarly chunks of noise at his audience. It's rare that a recording of a performance can capture that energy but today's show definitely does.

Today's show was originally going to have interviews with Amon Tobin and Dr. Toast about their new albums; an interview with the folks from the Norbergfestival, which is taking place in Sweden this weekend; and an interview with Geeta Dayal about her book about Brian Eno's album, Another Green World.

That would have been a great show, right?

But shows like that take a lot of time. I have to schedule the interviews, come up with some hopefully thought provoking questions, then record and edit the interviews, never mind producing the actual show. Add in a day job and suddenly flying to Indiana to say goodbye to my grandfather. I just didn't have that kind time to wrap up the month with a show like that. I promise to deliver that show to you next month, though.

So what have I got for in store for you on today's edition of solipsistic NATION? Glad you asked.

As of last night I had no idea what I was going to do for today's show and then I remembered a mix I had been putting together for Macedonia for his excellent Both Sides of the Surface podcast. Macedonia had invited me to be a guest DJ on his show about a year ago and I've slowly been pulling tracks I thought would perfectly fit right into his show while still conveying the spirit of my own show.

That was the plan, but since I had nothing for today's show, well, my back was against the wall. I'll come up with another set for Macedonia. Hopefully it wont take another six months.

Speaking of Macedonia, you really need to hear his latest podcast. Macedonia's show is always fantastic but he's really been batting them out of the park in 2011. There's a reason I've been listening to Both Sides of the Surface for the last five years. I urge you to give his show a listen and his latest podcast is an excellent place to start.

Today's show is very special for me and I imagine it will be a very special show for a lot of people, because today we'll be talking with Brian Long and showcasing music from the Excursions in Ambience compilation album series.

Back in the early 1990s when I was first falling deeply in love with electronic music, Caroline Distribution released Excursions in Ambience, which captured my imagination and expanded my horizons of what electronic music, and ambient music, could be.

Excursions in Ambience turned out to be an incredibly successful album, and was quickly followed up with Excursions in Ambience: The Second Orbit, The Third Dimension and ended, sadly, with The Fourth Frontier.

Brian was the AR & Project Manager for Caroline Distribution back in the early 90s and was the man responsible for releasing the Excursions In Ambience series as well as being instrumental in the launch of Astralwerks. Astralwerks is owned by Virgin Records/EMI and distributed by Caroline Distribution in the US and continues to release amazing electronic music.

Brian currently runs Yes Know Management and represents artists such as The Juan McLean and VHS or Beta.

The Excursions in Ambience albums are no longer being pressed and are not available as digital downloads. You can still find used versions of those albums, however, and I've included links below where you can find them on Amazon for a fair price. You can always give sites like eBay a try. too.

This week's show came together so quickly my head is still spinning!

Once a month on solipsistic NATION I feature a live performance from an electronic musician. I usually try to have a bank of live sets so I don't have to scramble at the last minute to get a show out. I say "usually" because lately I've been so very busy that my bank of live sets had dwindled away and today's show was fast approaching and I had absolutely nothing!

And then, out of the blue, I get an email from Dubmatix announcing Zion Train's forthcoming Dub Revolutionaries - The Very Best Of Zion Train album (check out Dubmatix's live set on solipsistic NATION while you're at it. I asked Dubmatix if he could put me in touch with Zion Train and within a day I was exchanging emails with Zion's Neil Perch. Neil agreed to come on the show and was kind enough to send me their live set from Poland. I only just got off the phone with Neil a few hours ago.

I'm excited about today's show for a couple reasons. First, it's Zion Train, for crying out loud!

Zion Train were part of the dub explosion that came out of the 90s. They've released over 10 albums and their Live As One album won Zion Train the 2007 Jamaican Reggae Grammy for Best Dub Recording. It's crazy that I've been listening to their music all these years and now I get to talk with one of the founding members and play one of their concerts on the show!

Another reason I'm excited about today's show is that I got to use Apogee's Duet 2 to record the voice overs for the first time!

solipsistic NATION has always been a D.I.Y. cheap tech operation. I'm quite proud of that, in fact. I think it's great we all have access to inexpensive technology that can be used for tools of creation. But I've reached a point where that aesthetic has stopped being a produce the best show I can with the tools at hand to a limitation. Yeah, my gear is okay, but for a reasonable investment I cam make solipsistic NATION sound so much better!

The Duet 2 is the first part of many stages that will take place behind the scenes in the next few months in the production of solipsistic NATION. I'm thrilled that I'll be able to significantly boost the quality of the show and I'm equally thrilled in all the ways I'll have to re-learn how I do my show.

Today's edition of solipsistic NATION is epic but it fought me every step of the way in it's creation! Arranging and preparing for four interviews, waking up in the wee hours of the night to call Pitch Black's Michael Hodgson, endless hours of editing and mixing, two essential applications crashing constantly, etc. It is by sheer will alone that I was able to pipe today's show into your tender and wanting ears. And what a show it is!

I've spent the last couple years off and on trying to showcase Waveform Records and that show finally came together earlier this month. Quite by coincidence, Bluetech, Phutureprimitive and Pitch Black had all recently released new albums, and all of them had releases on Waveform Records. I'm new to Ott but he's somehow managed the trick of sounding at once utterly familiar and worn in but completely fresh and surprising at the same time.

Bluetech's album, Rainforest Reverberation is classic Bluetech and 100% of the proceeds from all music sales go to end deforestation, species loss, and cultural upheaval in the Amazon. I've been a fan of Phutureprimitive since the release of his first album, Sub Conscious. Phutureprimitive is another artist that took a few years to get on the show but the stars aligned and a window opened up for Rain to talk about his new album, Kinetic, and it was well worth the wait. From the music, to the albums, title, to the album cover, Kinetic is meant to convey one thing: movement. So get your booty moving!

While I was putting today's show together I asked folks on Twitter and Facebook who they thought I should also include to round out the show and Pitch Black came up time and again and is an obvious choice if you give it a moment's thought. Another happy coincidence: Pitch Black have also released a new album and it's called Remixes & Rarities. Mitch was gracious enough to come on the show to talk about their new album and how much Pitch Black owes their sound to dub, so much so that it's their "lead instrument."

As I mentioned earlier, I'm new to Ott but I'm now a dedicated fan. I said that Ott's music also feels very familiar. Earlier in his career Ott worked with such luminaries as Brian Eno, The Orb, Youth, African Head Charge, Steve Hillage, and On-U-Sound and I can't help but think those experiences rubbed off on the young Ott. No wonder Ott's music feels instantly beloved.

A bit of news...

This has been a banner month for solipsistic NATION and Junes's not yet over!

As of today, solipsistic NATION has been downloaded over a whopping 33,000 times this month. That's a record but it gets better still. This month's live show featuring alka, merohedra, Alexei Borisov and 80(sun) has been downloaded over 11 thousand times! That's more than the other show that was the most downloaded edition of solipsistic NATION. That was Amon Tobin's live set and that show took over two years to break 10,000 downloads!

Listen, I work hard on the show because I love the music and I want to share it with as many people as I can. If you like what you hear, you can help the artists by spending a buck or two on one of their songs, maybe buy an entire album. Finally, and sadly, I don't know if you've heard the news but Cheb I Sabbah has been diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer and that his cancer is spreading to his liver and left lung. Without immediate and proper treatment, the prognosis given is very grim. Cheb does not have health insurance. As you can imagine, the cost to treat his cancer is going to be astronomically expensive. To make matters worse, due to his weakened condition, Cheb has had to cancel many shows, bringing his income stream to a complete halt.

But you can help.

Indiegogo is crowd sourcing to raise money to help pay for Cheb's medical expenses. Cheb is a sweetheart of a guy (just listen to my interview with him back in 2007) and if you've ever met the man or enjoy his music, I implore you to go to generously donate some of your money to help Cheb.

I've got a great show for you today. Well, great if you like things that snap, crackle and hiss.

We'll hear a couple tracks off of the Clicks & Cuts 5.0 - Paradigm Shift compilation album. Clicks & Cuts was released by the newly relaunched Mille Plateaux label, and Clicks & Cuts caused a bit of stir in the electronic music community. Some feel the new owner, Marcus Gabler, is taking the label beyond it's roots, while others think that Clicks & Cuts is simply derivative. Me, I don't care. I think the album is pretty dope and I'm basing that solely on the music.

We'll also hear a couple tracks from Electroton with artists Weiss, Thorsten Soltau and Kabutogani. I don't know a lot about Electroton but so far everything I've heard from the label has been absolutely fantastic so I'll be keeping my eye on them, and so should you.

I got a really nice email earlier this week from Lyman, who listens to the show from the UK. Lyman likes the show and he also turned me on to some really great music ranging from flamenco to French horn and Javanese Gamelan music to some Renaissance music. You can find videos of the music Lyman introduced me below.

Last week's label showcase featuring Waveform Records got a lot of love. Macedonia from the always excellent Both Sides of the Surface podcast said that his wife still has her copy of the One A.D. compilation album along with releases from Higher Intelligence Agency and Sounds From The Ground.

Seven on Facebook told me that Waveform Records A.D. series helped him study while he was in med school and was excited to learn that he can now listen to more music from Waveform Records on the Musical Starstreams online radio show.

On today's show we're going to hear select tracks from artists on Waveform Records. We'll also talk with Forest, who is the label's co-founder.

Today's show is kind of a big deal for me. Back in the early 90s there were a clutch of albums that came out at roughly the same time I was falling in love with electronic music. Beyond Records Ambient Dub , Astralwerks Excursions in Ambience and Waveform Records A.D. compilation albums were on heavy rotation on my show when I was spinning at WMFO. I still consider those albums essential listening and they introduced me to a wider world of electronic music beyond industrial and happy hardcore.

When I began solipsistic NATION I had a list of record labels I wanted to feature on the show and Waveform Records was always on the top of the list. It's a real treat for me, and I hope for you as well, to have Forest on today's show. Forest will flesh out the history of Waveform Records and it's origins in Forests radio show, Musical Starstreams and it's connections to Beyond Records. We'll also get a look at how online reviews can unfairly dog an album for years. And we've got some really, really great music to listen to!

It's such a beautiful day here in San Diego that I decided to get out of the studio and record today's introduction with you from my roof deck. There's a light breeze and from where I'm standing I can see the Pacific Ocean. I wish you were here to see it with me. After living in Boston, San Diego feels like a slice of paradise.

Today's show is going to be a bit different. Instead of featuring one or two live performances and an interview, I present to you four, count 'em, four live sets for your enjoyment!

During the last year or so I've been accumulating some recordings of live performances that on clock in at around 15 or 20 minutes. I've just been waiting until I had enough of these shorter sets to combine them into one show. Obviously, we've reached that point so let me tell you what you'll hear on today's live extravaganza.

First up, we'll hear a live set from alka. I believe this set was recorded at the GATE in Philadelphia a year or two ago. Special thanks goes to Bryan Michael of Newt.org for providing me with alka's live set.

Next, we'll hear a live set from merohedra performing at Openmind stage back in 2010 at the Psycrowdelica Festival in Germany. merohedra is part of the Bak$hish Music collective and you can hear more music from the Bakshish Music on November 14th edition of solipsistic NATION.

From merohedra we'll move on to Alexei Borisov show at Yaroslavl way back in 2003. I don't know much about Alexei Borisov but I do know he's somehow affiliated with Marcos Fenrandes of Accretions and that's all the credentials I need (check out my interview with Marcos here).

We're going to close today's show with a live set from 80(sun). 80(sun) is the solo recording project of Jonathan Scherk. I'm not sure where this was recorded at except that it was recorded at a now closed art gallery to a room of dubstep punks. That's all I know.

Speaking of live, I want to thank Daysha out in Texas for turning me on to Calvertron, Figure, Turbo Teen, Aversion and DJ Monkey who performed at the World Beat Center last night here in San Diego. Daysha is not only super nice but she's also super talented and produces and promotes bass music.

If you're going to this year's Mutek Festival in Montreal I'm envious. Sadly, I won't be going but I've decided to bring the Mutek Festival to me by having Mutek's founder, Alain Mongeau, chat with us about this year's festival.

Mutek is an annual five-day event in Montreal which kicks of this year June 1st.

Each year, more than 100 artists, panelists, and industry professionals participate in what has become a leading event of its kind in North America. MUTEK also hosts numerous international versions of its festival in locations often under-represented in such places like Mexico City, Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Colombia.

Today's show is a bit of a hodgepodge mix of acts I'd like to see at this year's Mutek Festival. Amon Tobin has been on solipsistic NATION a couple times and his live set is actually the fist edition of solipsistic NATION to break 10,000 downloads but I've never actually seen Amon rock a show. I finally saw Badawi on Meat Beat Manifesto's Autoimmune tour and if I was going to this year's Mutek Festival I'd definitely see Badawi again. I've also been a fan of Four Tet for years so I'd love to catch their show. And Plastikman? Are you kidding me? That guy's been a part of the electronic music scene for what seem like forever. He's an institution in the techno world. And that's just some of the acts I wish I could see at this years Mutek Festival, let alone all the other other artists that are completely new to me.

Today on solipsistic NATION we're going to bring in the Rapture with a mix put together for us by Praketh, who is also the host of the blueOrb podcast.

Praketh has only released a handful of shows on blueOrb but when he does, well, they're just breath taking.

I first came across Praketh's blueOrb podcast back in 2006 when he released his Down The Rabbit Hole (Electronic Chillout Mix). I still remember the first time I listened to it.

It was an early morning in San Diego. I had just pulled an all-nighter and was walking down the street to get some coffee. I had Praketh's mix playing over my headphones and I was hearing things that I wasn't sure was part of his mix or sounds of my city. They blended together so seamlessly I couldn't tell one from the other. but they made that morning a magical experience.

And then there was the music, the beautiful music! With tracks from the likes of Tycho, Boards of Canada and Nalepa it's hard to go wrong, but in Praketh's hands he turned those songs into a narrative and an emotional journey.

I was so touched by Praketh's mix I asked him if I could feature it on the show, and you can find it here.

Last month, Praketh emailed me with a link to another mix he had put together and asked if I would consider playing it on the show. I said yes before I had even downloaded his mix.

Praketh is an Indian based electronic music DJ who also performs as buffaPirate.

As blueOrb he plays music that's emotional and rich in texture. As buffaPirate he spins bass heavy electronic music like Dubstep, drum and bass and Glitch-Hop.

In 2008 he moved from Bombay to New Delhi to work as the A&R/Label Manager for Audio Aashram and Programming Head for Radio79.com. As of 2011 he has focused more on his own music productions, which I am really looking forward to hearing more of.

Once a month on solipsistic NATION I showcase a record label that is putting out such amazing releases that I am compelled to share them with you. I like to think of it as a form of public service.

On today's show we're going to hear select tracks from Herb Recordings. We'll also chat with Craig Murphy, the man behind Herb Recordings.

Herb Recordings is is an independent record label based in Scotland and while they're not an electronic record label per se, they release enough of it that I feel like I can claim them as one of our own.

I first took note of Herb Recordings when I would I listen to music from the likes of Skytree, Kingbastard and Shamanic Technology and I would think to myself, "this is great stuff!" And then I run off and quickly Google them and the trail always lead back to Herb Recordings.

Last December, Solipsism came on the show with his live set that was recorded at Nice n Sleazy in Glasgow. Craig Murphy is Solipsism and he's also the man behind Herb Recordings and I asked if he'd be interested coming on the show. He joins us today from his home in Glasgow to talk with us about his label and the release of Herb Recordings excellent compilation album, Verdant.

Next month we'll showcase Waveform Records. They put out all those great ambient dub and trance compilation albums we love so much and they also happen to be based in my backyard here in San Diego.

I'm still astonished how quickly this week's show came together. And what a great show it is!

Hey, I'm like you. I've got a job, I've got a life. I'm a busy guy. But I've got a to-do list as long as my arm and every day I chip away at it. A quick email here, a phone call here, and slowly but surely things get done. But when I'm in this mode I don't often see the forest for the trees. Or is it the trees for the forest? I can never remember how that goes. Anyway, my point is that sometimes I'm so caught up in the minutea of producing a show that I lose sight of the big picture.

In the last couple of weeks I learned that Karsh Kale, Tim Sköld, Nivek Ogre and HoodooEngine had released or were about to release new albums. I dig them all so I do what I do sent out the emails and made the phone calls. There were other musicians, labels and festivals I wanted to feature on the show as well but they didn't happen due to availability and time constraints and before I knew it, this week's show had been distilled into a gem of greatness.

I discovered Karsh Kale right about the same time I discovered the Asian Massive (or Asian Underground) scene. Over the years I watched the careers of Karsh Kale, Asian Dub Foundation and others grow over the years and it's a wonder that I haven't had someone like Karsh on the show earlier. Karsh has released six albums and recorded and performed with everyone from Zakir Hussain to Yoko Ono. Karsh's latest album, Cinema, is his most ambitious album to date. It's big, bold and melodramatic, and Karsh's experience scoring films has had an impact on the scope of Cinema.

Tim Sköld was another surprise! Before I knew it, one night after work I found myself in front of a microphone talking to Tim about his long career, from his rock roots in bands like Kingpin and Shotgun Messiah and then later playing with the likes of KMFDM and Marilyn Manson. Tim also released a solo album back in 1996 and 15 years later he's followed it up with Anomie, due out May 10th. Tim was great to talk with and I found that he's as much an agent provocateur in person as he is in his music. I also had some great questions to ask him from folks like Jeremy and Royb0t from Twitter and Facebook.

Ogre's is set to release a second album with ohGr called unDeveloped that also due to be released May 10th. Ogre and Skinny Puppy have scored the post apocalyptic soundtrack to our lives for nearly 30 years. While Skinny Puppy was my introduction into industrial music, there's industrial music and then there's Skinny Puppy. They're in their own category and to call them industrial is kind of limiting. I was curious to see what directions Ogre would explore through ohGr and to be honest, I didn't like unDeveloped at first. As Ogre mentions during our chat, people rarely give music full attention because they're usually multitasking while they're listening to music. I was doing the same thing with unDeveloped but one night while I was going out for a run I listened to unDeveloped and without being aware of it I found myself lost in the album and now I think it's one of my favorite album of 2011.

Once I finally realized that Tim and Ogre were going to be guests on this week's show I knew I had to include Hoodoo Engine. I've wanted to play tracks from their EgoWhore album since it was released in 2010 but it was just one of those scheduling things. Hoodoo Engine would be perfect for today's show and to top it off, they're gearing up to release their new album, Murder the World, and it's more wretched and evil than EgoWhore, if such a thing is even possible. The core of Hoodoo Engine is Marz233, James Curcio and Johann Ess. Just to be above board, both James and I are on the Alterati Network, but I've known James long before Alterati when I interviewed him about his book, Join My Cult. While you anxiously wait for the release of Murder the World you can watch Clark, a gonzo mockumentary reality show art film surrounding the struggles of an independent artist in a capitalist world.

Oh, special thanks to tricil for providing the incidental music during my interviews with Tim and Hoodoo Engine. While I was putting together today's show I realized that I didn't have any instrumental music from either of them and went on Twitter and asked if anyone had some tracks I could use for music beds. tricil stepped responded in minutes and generously let me use his tracks "rcc3" and "conserve destroy." Whew, just barely got this week's show out and I owe it all to Potion Factory's Tangerine! software. Tangerine lets you easily create playlists by analyzing the beats per minute and the beat intensity of your music.

Between work and interviewing people for next weeks big show featuring the likes of Skinny Puppy's Ogre, Marilyn Manson's Tim Skold, Hoodoo Engine and Karsh Kale I just never had time to put together a mix for today's show. But I did have a card up my sleeve: Tangerine!

I told Tangerine! to randomly pull from a playlist I had created in iTunes of tracks that I had listened to and had given a three to five star rating. I also told Tangerine! to to choose songs that had both mid to high BPMs and beat intestity.

Tangerine! did a pretty good job. I was surprised by some of the tracks it selected, but overall I was pleased with the results. I just had to soften the edges here and there. While Tangerine! would never replace a DJ but it does a pretty damn good job. Tangerine! is $24.95 and runs only on Macs. Sorry, PC guys. Potion Factory isn't sponsoring this week's show, I just happen to like their product.

Before I get out of Dodge, I just have to say that I love my Apple Magic Mouse and wireless keyboard.

The keyboard may be a touch on the small side but it's a tight little device and really well designed. The keys have a matte finish feel to them, giving them a slight sand papery feel, which pleases. The keys also make a satisfying clacking sound when you type, enough to make you feel like you're accomplishing something, but not distracting.

It took me a few weeks to warm up to my wireless mouse but now I love it. What really helped was installing MagicPrefs, which cleared up the default settings lousy cursor tracking. MagicPrefs also gave me the options to customize my mouse clicks to perform specific functions. Very cool stuff.

Today's show is a soundtrack for an imaginary movie set in an imaginary city. Think Bladerunner's LA meets William Gibson's Sprawl meets Tron: Legacy.

Our first track is "Community" by PVT from their Church With No Magic album released by Warp Records. In my movie, PVT's "Community" would be the music that you'd hear at the beginning of the movie when all the production companies display their logos and "Community" sets the mood immediately for the rest of the movie. Big, solemn, and mysterious.

From "Community" we make our way to Neil Milton's "The Broken Lines" from the Brave New World compilation album released by the FeedbackLoop Label. The "Broken Lines" is our movies' introduction as intoned by our narrator. As our narrator speaks we dissolve to ocean waves in the night. The camera pulls back to reveal our sinister city and we segue into Kabutogani's track, "Ducts," from Kabutogani's Bektop album. The camera slowly begins to advance on the city, picking up speed until we glide over the shore and into the city streets.

I don't know what kind of movie this is but it's definitely got a noirish vibe to it with some scifi undertones, kind of like Dark City or The Matrix. I wonder what the big reveal will be? Will our heroes find that they are living in a digital illusion or that their city is actually a spaceship?

We've meet our protagonists and antagonists and the conflict and drama begins as Weiss' "Rezykla" weaves the plot elements together. Thorsten Soltau continues that theme with "Rezykla7."

What soundtrack would be complete without Brian Eno and from Eno's 2010 album, Small Craft On A Milk Sea, we'll hear "Complex Heaven." Come to think of it, this week's show probably wouldn't exist without Brian Eno's many scores for imaginary films.

From Undermathic we'll hear "Big City Nights" from their album, 10;10pm, out on Tympanik Audio. "Big City Nights" sounds like music that signifies that our movie is moving into it's second act and Undermathic is moving the story right along with it. The stakes are suddenly bigger and plot twists abound.

"Shrouding" is by Perfect Blind from their Three Spires album and this to me sounds like your chase scene or fight scene music, right?

This is all leading to the big showdown.

Let's be honest, the music is more to suggest the idea of a kind of movie than an actual plot or storyline. I'll leave that you screenwriters out there.

In act three we listening to Subheim's remix of SE's track, "Mimikry." Mmm, sounds introspective, pensive and full of regret. Our heroes must be doing a lot of soul searching right about now. Smoking cigarettes, walking through the rain, driving nowhere on their motorcycles through the city streets.

Before "Mimikry" we'll hear "Concerning The Bombs" by Starting Teeth featuring Larytta from the Let's Get Creaked compilation album. From Suicide Inside we'll hear "Kill The Guilt" from their album, Dead Red. That's definitely the smash cut to act three.

And how do we resolve out little movie? Well, we're going to close with the Oneohtrix Point Never Edit of King Felix's "Metal Confection." Kind of feels like resolution music where the big plot twist is revealed and with Phutureprimitive's new album, Kinetik, we roll credits with his track, "Disappear."

Today on solipsistic NATION we'll showcase The Centrifuge, a UK-based electronic arts collective that runs a digital record label and organises events around Europe. The Centrifuge focuses on the expression of the experimental aesthetic in electronic music, with an emphasis on electronica, glitch, ambience and minimalism, acid, IDM and drill and bass.

When I relaunched solipsistic NATION as a podcast and later as a radio program I had a mental checklist of labels I wanted to feature on the show. In the last five years I've slowly checked off most the of those labels. There are still plenty of labels left on that list but I've decided to focus more and more on exploring the blossoming of new electronic music labels. Most of these labels are netlabels, which makes sense in this age of the internet. What curious, though, is how electronic music labels often lends itself to collectivism, and that's a theme we'll explore on today's show.

The Centrifuge as a collective entity has been around since 2007 and its main purpose was to put out releases by Eutechnik. The Centrifuge has grown very quickly during those last four years and has grown its roster of artists. They've been kind enough to send me links to downloads of the latest albums released on The Centrifuge and I've always been impressed with what I've heard. The Weather Channel's "Weather Channel 0" still gives me chills to this day (click here for a free download) and Roy of the Ravers still makes me want to dance. Just wonderful stuff!

I'm going to talk gear for a bit so please indulge me.

I relaunched solipsistic NATION in 2006 because I had just purchased a Mac Mini and it came with GarageBand pre-installed. GarageBand changed everything because suddenly I could create shows easily and quickly. It's safe to say that if I hadn't picked up my Mac Mini that solipsistic NATION would never have happened.

I loved my Mac Mini. It was a speedy little machine that got stuff done quietly. I often petted it and called it a good boy. I kid you not.

I didn't just use GarageBand to produce solipsistic NATION. I used software like Sound Studio to record IDs and voice overs and edit interviews for years. But over time I added more tools to my toolkit like Levelator, iTunes-LAME and SoundSoap. And after a hundred shows I had accumulated a lot of audio files. I hadn't noticed it but my Mac Mini was slowly growing old and decrepit.

In the last year I came to dread working on my machine because it was painfully slow. Just switching between applications could take anywhere form 30 to 60 seconds. Saving files took forever. It was psychically painful to even think about working on the show on my Mac Mini. The machine I was once called a "good boy" I now cursed.

Last month I had to put the old boy to pasture and I picked up a new Mac Mini from Apple. I don't think I can adequately convey how much of a joy it is to work on it. Actually, I can. It's exactly like when I first got my original Mac Mini. But on steroids. Now I'm eager to edit episodes of solipsistic NATION. It's like falling in love all over again.

Take today's show, for example. Our guest is Igorrr and we're going to listen to a recording of his concert in Stockholm from earlier last month.

A lot of music gets sent my way but there are certain labels that I will always make a point of listening to first. Once such label is Ad Noiseam.

Ad Noiseam consistently releases such mind blowing music on regular basis that not only have I showcased the label on solipsistic NATION but I go out of my way to listen to whatever music they are kind enough to send my way.

Last year Ad Noiseam sent me an album called Nostril by Igorrr. I didn't know what to expect but if it was released by Ad Noisem that was good enough for me. That said, I was completely surprised and utterly delighted by Igorrr's baroque infused breakcore.

I asked Igorrr if he had recorded any concerts that I might feature on solipsistic NATION and he was kind enough to send me his Stockholm show.

I'm really excited to present Igorrr's concert on today's show and I was equally excited to produce the show. My new Mac Mini works like a champ and I was able to effortlessly switch back and forth between apps and edit and save large audio files in record time. So much fun!

Thanks for letting me geek out about today's show and my new Mac Mini. I just had to get that out of my system.

I'm listening to today's show while writing up today's show notes and I'm listening to today's show loud.

It recently occurred to me that I no longer listen to music the way I did when I was a kid. When I was a kid I had two modes of listening to music. One mode was to listen to music on headphones cranked to 10. At that volume I could hear every nuance of David Gilmore's guitar on The Wall, it became obvious just how much Yoko Ono appears on the White Album and hidden samples emerged out of Meat Beat Manifesto's albums. At that volume I was enveloped in the music of Yes and The Orb and transported to other realms. My other mode of listening to music was blast it out over speakers. It's a more visceral experience when you can feel the bass line throbbing in your loins and the snare drum kicking you between the eyes.

What those two modes have in common is making the experience of listening to music more vivid. Listening to music over headphones made me appreciate the richness of sound it lacked the physicality of music blaring through speakers. But both modes made the music more real.

I no longer listen to music at those levels for practical reasons. It'd be foolish to constantly bludgeon my eardrums with music piped through my little white ear buds. And it'd be rude to subject my neighbors to whatever I happen to be listening to. I certainly don't appreciate it when they blast their music.

But sometimes as an adult when you can indulge yourself now and then and turn the music up so loud the windowpanes rattle. And this is just the shot to listen to loudly because it rocks and it's groovy.

Lady Sovereign spits a medley of rhymes and Lady Saw makes an appearance on a track by Talen (and remixed by Stereotyp!). And you can't go wrong with Roots Manuva and it's great to play Santigold and Ms Dynamite on the show. If you're able, give yourself permission to crank today's show up on your headphones or speakers.

This month's showcase features a label that actually appeared on the Dubsonic edition of solipsistic NATION and that label is Iberian Records. That show also included music from Boka Records, Hot Flush Recordings, Immerse Records and a lot of other labels putting out fantastic dubstep EPs and LPs.

That show was just a snapshot of each label and I've been meaning to focus more in-depth on each label as we go along. On today's show we're going to hear 21 select tracks from Iberian Records.

I've come to love Iberian Records in the last few years because while their release may be few, each one is special and I've really enjoyed the horizons of bass and groove driven music they've been exploring.

Howie is one of the founders of Iberian Records and he returns to solipsistic NATION to talk about his label.

Producing solipsistic NATION is a labor of love and it keeps me out of mischief but it does eat up a lot of time. Last week's show featuring Meat Beat Manifesto's Jack Dangers, Bassweight dubstep documentary director Suridh Hassan, DJ Umb of Generation Bass and [tlr] of NVR-NDR took 21 hours to put together.

When I was freelancing from home producing shows like that we're easier to do. I could carve out a few hours day here and there to work on upcoming shows. But for the last 6 months I've been working onsite on jobs that demand my complete attention. I come home from work with just about enough energy to exercise, cook myself some dinner, maybe watch a little TV then it's off to bed. I pretty much only have the weekends to work on these shows.

As a consequence sometimes these shows go out late. I'm sure most of you don't mind since podcasts are a time-shifted medium but I know it must bugs some of you. It certainly bugs me when my favorite shows are late. So... apologies.

As long as we're on this topic, I want to thank you for listening.

There are thousands of other podcasts you could listen to. At this very moment you could be listening to an album by your favorite band or watching a movie or playing a video game or reading a book.

I've always know this but lately I've come to appreciate tyou as a listener all the more. As I mentioned, my current job demands my complete attention so the amount of music and podcasts I listen to has dropped significantly. You could be doing a million other things besides listening to this show so it means a lot to me that you do.

Today's show was inspired by a piece by Banksy, courtesy of Art of the State. As you can see, we have what we can safely assume is a fairly well-to-do, middle-aged white male gazing thoughtfully of some graffiti that simply reads "BORING." Given Banksy's meteoric rise from obscurity to a cult following art world darling it's safe to assume that this is Banksy wry commentary on art, culture, media and fame.

Banksy's piece also reminds me of something Elvis Costello once said: "writing about music is like dancing for architecture." As the host of this show that comments makes me feel a little uncomfortable. While I may not be writing about music I am dangerously flirting with pomposity when I interview the guests who grace the show. There have been a few times one one of the people I am interviewing feels exasperated talking about their music. Sometimes it's almost ineffable. It's like asking them to write about music. Still, we're human. I want to ask the questions and if you listen to the show, well, you want the answers.

Got quite a show for you today!

First up is a chat with Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto about his new album, Answers Comes In Dreams. It's a dark, rainy night here in San Diego and that's providing the inspiration for today's show. Me? I'm providing the soundtrack for tonight's perilous precipitation.

A dark, rainy night. That could go many ways, right? A brooding, introspective mix might be appropriate. Or maybe something light and playful, suggesting the cleansing nature of rain. But no, in this case it's a rain that might have fallen on that megatropolis that was Los Angeles in Bladerunner. Or maybe a rain that would have fallen on William Gibson's Chiba City in his seminal cyberpunk novel, Neuromancer.

It's a rain that makes the asphalt slick and causes manhole covers to endlessly belch fetid steam, obscuring unknown and possibly menacing figures. It's a rain that falls from a sky the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.

And I need to go out into that wet night in a few minutes and eat some dinner before I fall over. But first, a few notes.

Last we showcased Diffrent Music, a label that blends the best elements of drum and bass and dubstep. I think the label is great but I only just got the mix a few days before last week's show went out. I hastily mixed in my interview with Hunchbak and Dexta, the label's founder and released the show. I was surprised and blown away with their mix as you were. And if you haven't listened to it, go check it out after listening to this week's show. It's really great!

Once a month on solipsistic NATION I showcase a record label that is putting out amazing releases that you need to know about.

But here's the thing, I've been doing this for a couple of years now and have featured at least 50 labels. Just off the top of my head I can name Ninja Tune, Ultimae Records and Digital Hardcore Recordings as labels that felt like I was counting coup by having on the show. I've pretty much exhausted the list of labels I wanted to showcase. Oh, there are still a handful of labels I'd like to feature on the show like Warp Records, Astralwerks and Wax Trax Records but by necessity the label showcase has eveloved into a segment of exploration.

Think about it for a moment.

It's astonishing how many people are out there who believe that as a label they have something unique to offer that no other musician or label is doing. Sometimes it's not even that. Sometimes the music is so great they just feel compelled to share it with the world by starting a label to get the word out. It almost seems like a Sisyphean task: so many labels, so much music, so many people. How do you connect them all together?

One label that believes they have a different take on things is Diffrent Music.

They're a relatively new label that I discovered through Colin Steve's Knowledge Magazine website. If Colin likes them then I figured I should give them a listen. Sure enough, Colin was spot on.

In the spirit of exploration I extended an invitation to Hunchbak and Dexta, Diffrent Music's founders, to come on the show and get us acquainted with their label and hear select tracks from Diffrent.

Let me tell you something in confidence. Despite many years of interviewing everyone from sandwich makers to filmmakers, there are still people the show affords me the opportunity to talk to who reduce me to a gibbering fanboy.

Today's guest is Alec Empire so as you might have guessed, he's one of those guys that it takes, on my part, a sheer act of will not to be reduced to uttering Chris Farley-like lines like "Uh, you're so cool."

But, c'mon, this is Alec Empire we're talking about! This is the guy who, alongside with Hanin Elias and MC Carl Crack formed Atari Teenage Riot. This is the guy who co-founded Digital Hardcore Recordings. This guy has recorded with and remixed the likes of Björk, Justin Broadrick and Coil. I think I can be forgiven any fanboy tendencies. I just have to keep telling myself what Dan Le Sac always says "...just a band."

Fortunately, Alec makes things very easy for me. He's got the gift of the gab and has such great stories to tell. The plan was to have a quick chat with Alec and then play Atari Teenage Riot's "final" Brixton Academy show, but Alec was very generous with his time and the interview went long, so we'll only hear it in the background. But Alec was also kind enough to send a bootleg recording of Atari Teenage Riot at the Hultsfred Festival from earlier in 1999 and we'll hear that later on today's show.

Before you leap into today's show you should know that I had to edit down my interview with Alec. It pained me to do so and it was especially painful because three of the questions came from @s_w_u and @Spartz on Twitter. Rather than leave those segments on the virtual cutting room floor I've decided to make it available as bonus material, which you can download here.

As long as I can remember, I've always wanted to put together one of those year's top 10 songs or top 10 artists or albums. I've done nearly every conceivable thing that encourages that sort of behavior: record stores, radio stations. podcasts, blogs, etc. I've been given just about every platform that would allow me put the music I love on a shrine.

But I've never done it.

One of the reasons is that there's only so many hours in a day and attempting to look back over the year and draw some sort of meaning or theme out of it while presenting what you think is the best that year had to offer in electronic music-well, it gets a bit daunting and induces fits of narcolepsy. But despite those obstacles, I have, on numerous occasions, attempted to arrange in a neat and concise list and have failed at every turn.

Why just this year my attempt at putting together just such a list was botched when my iPod died. I salvaged the thing but all that carefully ordered data containing what songs I had listened to, by who, and how many times was gone!

But it occurred to me today that the show is actually what I consider to the best releases in a given year because my tag line is my mission statement: I'm hear to play for you the very best of all genres of electronic music.

Take today's show.

I was recently turned on to Weiss and he has already become one of my favorite recording artists. I love "04.22.38" but I would have been just as happy to play "Rezykla." Keep your ears open for this guys because he's very good. Upside Down Umbrella appears courtesy of Record Label Records excellent compilation album, Drinking the Goats Blood, which I've been meaning to play on the show for months (go check out my label showcase featuring Record label Records to hear more of their weird and wonderful music). If I had a list of top 10 releases in 2010 Geometry would definitely be on it. Tripswitch has a lush sound with an emotional core that I can't help but fall in love with. And then there's Signal Path. Their Imaginary Lines would also be on my imaginary list of top 10 releases in 2010. Imaginary Lines was fun and inventive and had a perfect mix of traditional instruments and electronics. I could go on but you get the point.

A few years ago I posted on Twitter that Twitter would eventually be no more exotic than email or instant messaging. Twitter hasn't reached that point just yet, but the novelty IS wearing off.

I take it for granted that I can casually keep up with my Net friends on Twitter.

I take it for granted that I get most of my news from Twitter or through Flipboard, which is an application that displays Tweets in a magazine format on my iPad.

And I expect my questions to receive near instantaneous answers from folks on Twitter. But if I take a moment to think about it, I realize just how much Twitter has had an impact on my life.

Take this week's show, for example.

About a month ago I announced on Twitter that I was putting together another Twitter mix, and I asked for tracks to be considered for the show. In an unbelievably short amount of time I had all the music I needed for the mix... and more! Not one track was a dud. Rather than agonize over which track to discard I decided to go long and include every track that was sent my way.

I admit that's a very simple way to use Twitter, but it still amazes how easy it was to put together a great mix from musicians from all over the world! Some of them are friends, and some of them are acquaintances, and some I've never met, but they were all generous enough to share their music.

As always, to keep with the theme of Twitter I've asked all the musicians to record a 140 character or less message to accompany each track on today's show. Cute, right?

Last month I featured a live set from Masmöd. I've been a fan of Masmöd's for a couple of years now so it was a pleasure to finally have him on solipsistic NATION. Masmöd, who's "secret identity" is Michael John, is also one of the co-founders of Nueva Forma, and after our interview I asked if he'd be interested in appearing on one of our label showcases. As you can tell by the title of today's show, he agreed.

One of the reasons why I'm such a fan of Michael's music is because it is rich both emotionally and sonically. All the artists on Nueva Forma are distinct from each other but they all plumb the same depths making each track more than just a casual listening experience. That's exactly the kind of music I enjoy and exactly the kind of music I endeavor to showcase on solipsistic NATION.

Furthermore, Nueva Forma is something of a boutique label so each artist and each album has been carefully selected. As a DJ and a producer of solipsistic NATION I'm inundated with new music each week and most of it is terrible. I often scratch my head wondering who gave the go-ahead to release such dreck on their labels. Clearly this is not the case with Nueva Forma where each album and each song is required listening.

If you enjoy today's show and happen to be in Portland, Oregon next February 14th then you'll definitely want to attend Nueva Forma's Kontrast which is a curated, audio/visual electronic music event. Kontrast will be featured at Ziba who's sole purpose is to provide a venue for beautiful experiences and is perfect environment for Nueva Forma. Michael and his crew are concerned that there has been a downward trend in the once ubiquitous nature of electronic music in Portland. With Kontrast they hope to make the genre once again more accessible by hosting (potentially) bi-annual events throughout the city, the first being the event at Ziba. Check it out.

A few years back I had Nicolas Chevreux of Ad Noiseam on the show to talk about his label. Ad Noiseam is one of those labels that puts out consistently great music so it was a real chore to try and shoe horn only an hour's worth of music into the show. I think I did a fairly decent job although it pained me not to include the other great music from Ad Noiseam.

One of the artists on Ad Noiseam that took me by surprise was Chevron. His track, "Burn Down The Jungle!," was so mindblowingly awesome that when I showcased Planet Mu Records there was no question that I was going to play another track by Chevron.

Since then Chevron has remained on my radar and when he sent me a copy of his live set a few months ago I knew I had to play it on solipsistic NATION. Hence, today's show.

A little background on Chevron: Chevron is Jonathan Valentine and hails from the UK. Jonathan began making rave and techno from an early age. In 2003 Planet Mu released his first 7" Swimmin’ Lessons. Further short releases on Planet Mu followed in 2004 as well as a European tour with Ceephax Acid Crew. He has also played many shows, including the legendary Kraked Squat Party, with artists such as Venetian Snares and Shitmat. Since 2003, he has lived in Brighton with Shitmat, who is also the founder of Wrong Music Records.

Welcome to 2011!

I've got lots of plans for the show this year but for today I thought we'd spend the hour listening to some beautiful music that's lush in it's minimalism. Sometimes more really is more and to demonstrate I'm only going to play four songs on today's show. Somtimes you need to give a song all the time it needs to bloom and unfold. Sometimes it's worth the wait to see what journey a song will take you.

I think of the music on today's show as being ambient psychedelic because the sounds of today's show will blend into your world and vice versa. You'll oten wonder if what your hearing is part of the show or your environment. For maximum effect I suggest putting on your headphones and listen to today's show as you walk about your neighborhood. Trust me, it'll be trippy.

So let me tell you who is providing the soundtrack to today's audio hallucination.

"Floating World Part 3" by Annea Lockwood.

Annea Lockwood is a composer who has taught music at Vassar College. Her music has spanned the breadth of microtonal music to electro-acoustic soundscapes to recording Fluxus-inspired pieces that included burned and drowning pianos. "Floating World" comes from her album, Thousand Year Dream/Floating World, in which Annea invited friends who are soundscape artists themselves to make recordings for her in places of personal and spiritual significance to them. The soundscapes are collaborative and while they have been edited they have not been processed.

Richard Chartier continues the theme with "A Desk For Mixing" which comes from his album, A Field for Mixing.

In A Field For Mixing Chartier recorded in a variety of small and large spaces in countries from Australia through Japan and the USA. Chartier took the unique properties of these spaces and created a completely new acoustic space. "A Desk For Mixing" is dedicated to William Basinski, another artists who works with soundscapes. "A Desk For Mixing" is based on Richard's site-specific installation work Mixing Desk, which was presented at the Montalvo Art Centre in 2006.

From Francisco Lopez we'll hear his track, "Untitled #203," which appeared in the Room40 Airport Symphony compilation album.

Last but not least, we'll end the show with "Mass Observation" by Scanner.

Robin Rimbaud is Scanner but Robin will always be Scanner to me and part of being Scanner means listening to telephone chatter. It's funny how back in the day Robin's recordings inspired conversation about the nature of communication, intimacy, alienation and ideas about privacy. Here in 2011 those ideas are just as relevant but what's changed is how freely we share things about ourselves that we once kept to ourselves.

Each week on solipsistic NATION I play for you what I consider the very best of all genres of electronic music. However, there's only so much I can cover in one hour. Each week I try to capture just a fragment of the tapestry that makes up electronic music. It's a work in progress. In any case, I do have a great show for you today.

Years ago I fell in love with i am jen's "At The Same Time." Shortly after relaunching solipsistic NATION as a podcast I asked her permission to play "At The Same Time" on the show. She said go ahead and I've been waiting patiently for just the right songs to coalesce around "At the Same Time." Some might think it obsessive to wait that long (and I would agree with them), and I think I nailed it with today's show and it was well worth the wait.

I mean, c'mon, today's show has everyone from Bonobo to Trentemøller on it! I'd have to be a spectacularly bad DJ to put together a show feature music by the likes of them that bombed. And trust me, today's show is pretty awesome.

Before I go, Tomaxxamot mentioned on Twitter that he listened to a couple episodes of solipsistic NATION during his drive last weekend and that he liked the Ensorcelled episode the best. Glad we could keep you company on your winter drive, Tom :-)

I also got an email from Mike and he let me know that he's listened to every episode of solipsistic NATION in 2010 and his favorite was the show featuring Hecq. I gotta agree with you, Mike, that was a pretty awesome show.

I've been showcasing labels on solipsistic NATION for four years. There are still a few labels I'd like to feature on the show like Warp Records and Astralwerks but I'm pretty close to checking off every label on my wish list. More and more I've been relying on young tell me which labels to feature on future shows.

A few months back Pixieguts' Marie Craven suggested that I give spontanMusik a listen. Marie has excellent taste in music so I went to the spontanMusik website without a moment's hesitation. I loved every track I heard and I invited Tobias Lorsbach, the label's founder, to come on the show and play select tracks from spontanMusik.

I think what I enjoy most about spontanMusik is that the music is not just great, it also deftly spans and blends many different genres of music. Indeed, there's also an infusion if jazz to many of the tracks from spontanMusik, as you shall hear on today's show.

Whoa, today's show is really, really late. I feel bad about that. On the other hand, this is a podcast so you're listening to this show on your schedule. Still, there's something to be said about hearing a show just as it's released. Anyway, today's show is a worth waiting for because I have not one, but two, live sets from two great musicians: Masmöd and Solipsism!

I'll let you in on a secret. Today's show had a one year gestation period.

I usually have six to 12 months of live sets waiting in a queue (it's a little anal retentive but I prefer to have those live sets on hand than having to scramble each month to find the next live set). One of the live sets was from Masmöd that he recorded at the Someday Lounge in Portland, Oregon that he had sent me some time ago. I really like the Portland music scene and I really like Masmöd's music (I'm also a fan of Nueva Forma, a label and collective he co-founded) but his set clocked in just over 30 minutes and solipsistic NATION is an hour long show. Usually in these situations I pair of shorter live sets with other shorter live sets. I had a couple but they just didn't fit with Masmöd's music until last month Solipsism sent me his live set recorded at Nice n Sleazy in Glasgow. Solipsism is another musician I really like and I've been digging his It Could Be Clouds album (I also really like Solipsism's label, Herb Recordings) so I'm thrilled to be able to present to you their live sets.

Told you today's show was worth waiting for.

Oh, and my queue is now empty as of today's show. I've sent out some feelers so we'll just have to see what next months live show will feature. Hopefully it will be on time!

I don't know where you are in the world or what time of day you are listening to this show but right now, for me, it is a rainy Saturday afternoon in San Diego.

It doesn't rain often in San Diego but it's perfect because it fits my mood and my mood is a foul mood. No particular reason for it. Just the usual hassle of dealing with a quotidian life. But putting today's show put me in a better mood.

You know, usually I have to wade through a lot of crap to find tracks that I think are worth listening to on Solipsistic Nation. The last few weeks have been remarkable because I've come across a lot of great music. More so than usual.

In a lot of way today's show reminds me of my days spinning at WMFO. I'd come in 45-60 minutes before my show, grab a stack of new albums and CDs I had pulled and quickly scan through them in one of our spare studios. Some how I'd manage to hang a show together from all the songs that I felt were listening to.

I've been very busy the last few weeks but as always, I've been flagging music that I've been listening to that might be played on a future show. Glad I did that because I found myself scrambling to put together this week's show. I just grabbed an hour's worth of songs and made a playlist that made some sort of sense, if only to me.

Quite a few of the songs heard on today's show can be freely downloaded (check the links below) but I want to direct your attention to the Let's Get Creaked compilation album. Once a month on solipsistic NATION I showcase a label that is putting out such amazing music that I am compelled to share that music with you.

On today's show we're going to listen to select tracks from artists on Bak$hish Music. Bak$hish Music isn't so much a label as a collective of like-minded artists modeled after Hakim Bey's Temporary Autonomous Zone (the socio-political tactic of creating temporary spaces that elude formal structures of control).

Bak$hish Music first popped up on my radar when they were kind enough to send me Cloucycle's Cumulus album (a project by Greg Hunter, Mauxuam, Master Margherita, Lingua Lustra and Ishq. Cumulus was such a fantastic album that from that point on I always kept an eye on whatever Bak$hish Music released and I have yet to be disappointed.

Like I said, when I find a label (or collective, in this case) that I love I want to share that music with you so I invited Maurizio and Moreno, Bak$hish Music's co-founders, to talk about their endeavour. Arranging this interview took some time due to our conflicting schedules. At one point they were jamming with Robert Rich (check out his live set here) and then later they were performing at the Boom Festival. I'm thrilled to finally have them as guests on solipsistic NATION and share music from Bak$hish Music with you.

Gabriel's music is inventive and fun and has just that right mix of aggro and sonic grit that I dig but how would that play in Beijing, I wondered. Very well, from what Gabriel tells me. And on a boat, no less!

I've been a fan of Dub Gabriel's music since he first came on my radar, no doubt through XLR8R. My ears definitely perked up and when I heard his tunes and I've been following his career ever since. Gabriel has been a producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist for over a decade and is one of only three artists in the world endorsed by Akai for their APC40 controller (the other two being Trent Reznor and Pete Townshend). It took a few years but I'm glad I to have him as a guest on today's show!

I don't know how you'll be spending your Halloween but I'll be hanging out with my friends doing a Murder Mystery and I'll play the role of Al Capone. That's just the kind of dorks we are.

I'll also be bringing two batches of Kool-Aid pickles to the party.

Kool-Aid pickles are basically pickles that have been marinating in Kool-Aid juice for a couple weeks. I've got a batch of cherry and a batch of lemon-lime pickles. The cherry pickles are blood red and the lemon-lime pickles are neon green. It sounds disgusting but they're actually quite delicious!

Today's show featuring music selected by the rad lads from the Magicore music blog is so much fun!

For the last year or so I've been friends with [tlr] on Twitter. [tlr] has always had great things to say and posted links to some wonderful links. A lot of links happened to be from his Magicore blog so I subscribed to his feed and was richly rewarded.

What is Magicore? Magicore is "a style of music primarily deriving influence from various genres of metal, electronic dance music, video-game music, and Japanese pop music. Magicore albums are conceptual in nature and revolve around a science fiction/fantasy storyline, with characters and settings." Magicore as a genre doesn't exist so Magicore the blog posts music that captures the spirit of what Magicore could be.

I loved the music I was finding on Magicore so I invited [tlr] to come on the show as a guest DJ to play the music he thought was the very best of Magicore. And boy did he ever deliver! As an added bonus, we also get to talk with tooth_eye and Phil who run the Magicore blog with [tlr].

As you may or may no know, once a month on solipsistic NATION I showcase a music label that is putting out such amazing releases that I feel compelled to grab you by the ear and play music from their catalogue. I've been doing solipsistic NATION for over four years so I've managed to feature a god chunk of the music labels I love and while there are plenty of labels I want to tackle I'm starting to see the horizon. I'm only one person and as diverse as my taste and knowledge of music is there is a limit. To keep things fresh I'll ask folks on Twitter and Facebooks which labels I should showcase on future editions of solipsistic NATION and ZZK Records came up time and time again.

ZZK Records is based out Buenos Aires and when I approached Grant Dulles, the label's cofounder, about showcasing ZZK Records he was kind enough let me have access to the label's entire catalogue. I didn't know what to expect but to my surprise and delight after playing tracks from ZZK Records on a random two hour sampling I didn't hear a bad track. They were all fantastic and I quickly fell in love with ZZK.

I was also charmed with ZZK Records' regional sound. Too often these days you can listen to, say, drum and bass from the US to Japan and it will sound uniformly drum and bass. It's rare to hear electronic based music that has a locative quality to it. ZZK Records definitely sounds like it's a product of Argentina. Furthermore, while the artists on ZZK Records may have a regional sound it's not the flattened, homogenized worldbeat sound so popular with so many other flavors. The artists on ZZK Records have a real presence and while the music may have regional flavor it's not for the sake of being exotic.

I can't hope to convey the full range of ZZK Records on today's show but it's a start and I encourage you to dig deeper and explore further. You'll definitely be rewarded for you effort!

solipsistic NATION studios are located in beautiful San Diego but today I wish I was in Seattle so I could be at this years Decibel Festival. The Decibel Festival has been taking place in Seattle since 2003 and this year's festival features legends like Carl Craig and newcomers like Mux Mool. But if I can't go to the Decibel Festival I'll bring the festival to me and have Decibel's founder Sean Horton as a guest on today's show to give us a tour of this year's festival.

On today's show I'll also keep my experimental electronic music street cred by also having Tristan Perich join us on today's show. Six years ago Tristan released 1-Bit Music, which was an electronic circuit assembled inside a CD case with a headphone jack. The device played 40 minutes of low-fi 1-bit electronic music, the lowest possible digital presentation of audio. Tristan recently released 1-Bit Symphony, and like 1-Bit Music it is also housed in a CD jewel case. 1-Bit Symphony is not a recording in the traditional sense; it literally performs its music when turned on.

We'll also talk with Karina van Heck. Karina is an artist form the Netherlands. Her current piece, which are wearable body speakers, is a commentary and criticism on the use of invasive technologies, such as X-rays and small cameras used by the medical industry to probe the human body.

Nick Pittsinger, who records an performs under the name Shamantis, recently gained notoriety (or popularity depending on how see things) by slowing down Justin Bieber's "U Smile" 800%. Slowing down a track that dramatically can reveal hidden dimensions in music. And if you've already heard the original song it's impossible not to search for familiar elements in the track. There's no way to hear the glacial "U Smile" as a song in it's own right without thinking of the original.

We'll also talk with Leif Inge, who is probably the originator or time-stretched music with 9 Beet Stretch which is Beethoven's 9th symphony slowed down to a 24 hour listening experience. I first heard 9 Beet Stretch a few years ago on the wonderful Radiolab program. 9 Beet Stretch had a profound effect on me on how music could be listened to and the fluid nature of time so it's a pleasure to have Leif on today's show.

Today's show was many months in the making!

Mad EP has been on solipsistic NATION several times in the past. Mad EP delivered a live set back in May and was on the show with O'Slick last September. During that time Mad EP and I have talked abut him coming on the show with a mix of his music. In fact, a few months ago he sent me a mix. I was game to play it but then Hecq came on solipsistic NATION with his mix and it occurred to both Mad EP and me that his mix, while great, didn't convey they full range of musical styles that he is capable of. So it was back to the drawing board.

Things got pushed back even further when Mad EP broke his hand. Mad EP is also a cellist so this must have been horrifying to him. Fortunately, he's mending just fine but it meant that his mix would have to wait.

I've been looking forard to his mix for quite a while but I had to be patient. What was I going to say? "Hey, dude, sorry about your broken hand but walk it off and deliver the damn mix!" So I sat tight. And the wait was well worth it.

Today's mix features at least 21 tracks that seamlessly weave in and out of each other. When I asked Mad EP for a playlist he just laughed and said it would be impossible. The playlist he did provide told me at the vey least which track he did play but not necessarily the sequence in which they appear. Like I said, they weave in and out of each other only to reappear later like a leir motif. But the mix does give you an idea of the spectrum of music Mad EP creates. As a bonus, a lot of the tracks are unreleased!

I've been a fan of Mad EP since the day Nicholas Chevreux from Ad Noiseam records was kind enough to send me a stack of promotional CDs so I'm thrilled to share with you Mad EP's incredible mix. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have because I've been listening to it almost daily since he sent it to me.

From time to time I'll ask listeners on Twitter and Facebook which labels I should showcase on solipsistic NATION and time and time again people have demanded that I do a feature on Ektoplazm, a psytrance netlabel. Amazingly enough, this is the first all-psytrance show on solipsistic NATION. In fact, I've played next to no psytrance on solipsistic NATION.

The reason is simple. I'm not a fan of psytrance. Just about every psytrance track I've heard sounds like every psytrance track I've heard. But when I think about it, you could say that about just about every ub genre of electronic music. To people who are not fans of, say, dubstep or drum and bass, it all sounds the same. But if you are a fan then it is very easy to hear the differences.

I'm glad I asked which labels I should showcase because it takes me out of my comfort zone and exposes me to music I would otherwise never listen to and the music from Ektoplazm is very, very good. Alexander, the founder of Ektoplazm, is our guest on today's show and he's put together select tracks from his label. Even while working within the framework of psytrance the music on Ektoplazm is distinct, playful and inventive. Listening to Alexander's mix it's obvious why psytrance has such longstanding popularity.

Yes, I know this is a Monday and not a Friday.

solipsistic NATION is a labor of love that keeps me sane but it's not a paying gig, so real life often gets in the way. Putting food on my table, I'm sad to day, trumps putting music in your ears.

So from time to time solipsistic NATION will go out a week late. And I could have easily pushed today's show back a week, too, but since this is a holiday in the US I figured that's all the excuse I needed to release tofay's show.

As I mentioned, once a month I feature a live set and this month's set comes to us from Lynn Standafer. You probably know him as Enduser.

Lynn's latest album, 1/3, was released by Ad Noiseam and like Ad Noiseam, Lynn's music is top notch, inventive and always takes you in unexpected directions. Today's live set from Lynn is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Lynn kicks things off with iamthesun, a project between him and Casey Beagle and Balazs Pandi and then moves to a project he did with former Swans member Jarboe. We'll also hear two track from Blood of Heroes, a project that includes Justin K. Broadrick and Bill Laswell. Lynn is a man who is not confined by genre. So we've got a lot of great music to look forward to!

I just encoded this week's show to mp3 (thanks, Blacktree!) and I'm coasting on the dregs of nervous energy. Before this buzz evaporates let me tell you about this week's show before I crash.

And what a great show it is!

I'm a little late to the party. Greg Harrison's Groove came out in 2000 but I only just saw it on Netflix a few months back.

For a while I've been thinking about the 90s and the millennium buzz that was building. Things seemed so optimistic but 10 years later, I just can't seem to muster that same optimism. I don't know if it's guarded caution from 9/11 or just a fact of getting older. Was I ever really that idealistic and is it possible to ever feel that way again? Harrison's Groove put me in touch with the Y2K zeitgeist but also with the smaller, more intimate moments that Douglas Rushkoff is always talking about. Come to think of it, Rushkoff wrote about his take on rave culture and meta culture in his book, Club Zero-G. Groove served as touchstone to how important those connections can be. I'm very happy Greg Harrison came on today's show to reflect on Groove.

Just as I feel obliged to cover electronic music culture in popular culture like movies like Groove I also feel obliged to promote electronic music festivals. This week we'll talk with Viola van Alphen and Kythe (Keith? Sorry about the spelling.) about the Gogbot Festival taking place in the Netherlands September 9th-12th. This year's theme is the technological singularity, which is a meme that's latched a hold of the my brain since the 90s. I blame that on rave culture!

The second half of today's show takes place in my fair city of San Diego. My very neighborhood, in fact.

A few weeks back I was kicking back at the Krakatoa Cafe and while I was waiting for my latte to be brewed I came across two flyers for the San Diego DIY New Media Lab and the Fundamentals Progressive Concepts and DJ Academy. I invited San Diego DIY New Media Lab's Morgan Sully and Fundamentals Progressive Concepts and DJ Academy's Chase Costello to join us on today's show to talk about the art and craft of creating and producing music.

Today's show is dedicated to Florian, a newly acquainted friend who has recently gotten into dubstep. Florian, while today's mix isn't all dubstep I think there's enough to keep you happy.

It's been fun listening to dubstep with fresh ears with Florian. It's easy to forget that dubstep has only been around for the last ten years. Unless you're this kid, who is going to grow up with dubstep, then it's easy to forgive if you've never heard dubstep.

The first time I had heard of dubstep was back in 2002 when XLR8R explored the genre. I had already heard the sound percolating through acts like Horsepower Productions but now the sound had a name. And who wouldn't want to get into dubstep? The genre's very name dripped with cool.

Dubstep quickly took off once it was championed by the likes of BBC Radio 1's John Peel and Mary Anne Hobbs. What was once an obscure scene now exploded into the mainstream. Well, as mainstream as a genres is going to get with it's two-step rhythm and depth-charge low-end bass is ever going to get.Dubstep is so pervasive and so easy to do wring that I'm almost sick of dustep.

But not yet.

As today's show proves, dubstep hasn't even begun to play itself out. Artists like Broken Note, Cardopusher and Mobthrow continue to plumbs the depths for new sounds to bring back to the surface.

So turn up that sub wooder and dance like a zombie!

Each month I showcase a music label that puts out amazing releases you absolutely need to know about. Today on solipsistic NATION I'll play select tracks from Crammed Discs.

Usually this would be pretty straight forward but in the case of Crammed Discs it's a challenge. Crammed Discs has been around for 30 years now and in that time they've released over 265 albums and 250 singles. Furthermore, Crammed Discs features artists from all over the world, from the Balkans to Africa, from South America to the Middle East and beyond. How do encompass all of that in a one hour program.

The simple answer is that it can't be done. Fortunately I had Marc Hollander, the label's founder, join me on today's show and guide the way!

Crammed Discs was founded in 1980 by Marc and the first release was Marc and Vincent Kenis' band, Aksak Maboul. Since then Crammed Discs and its sub-labels Ziriguiboom, SSR Records, Made To Measure and Language have put out wonderful releases from the likes of Minimal Compact, Zap Mama, Tuxedomoon and more.

As I said, it's impossible to convey the scope of Crammed Discs in a one hour show, even with the framework of electronic music. In the end I tried to express the diversity of the label as well as play tracks from some of my favorite artists such as Colin Newman, Balkan Beat Box and Bebel Gilberto. I even played a track by Konono Nº1 who technically aren't even an electronic music band. But it's my show and I can bend the rules when I want.

Back when I used to DJ at Free Radio San Diego (FRSD, incidentally, is where solipsistic NATION was born) I was introduced to the music of Atom & His Package.

FRSD was staffed mostly by punks and there was some discussion as to whether Atom & His Package was punk rock or not. On the one hand, Atom's music was mostly played on his sequencer (many will tell you that you don't play punk rock on a sequencer), his lyrics were mostly pretty silly and sung in an almost cartoony voice. But on the other hand, the sequencer had a "cheap" sound and Atom waved his freak flag in his lyrics that were earnest and heartfelt with a fuck you attitude if you didn't get it or didn't like it.

I don't think any of us took these discussion seriously but my own view was that Atom was most definitely punk. Not the conservative, thoughtless punk that dominates most of the genre and culture today. But the punk of yore, when there weren't really any rules as to what punk was.

If Atom is punk then what is he doing on solipsistic NATION, an electronic music show?

If you've listened to solipsistic NATION in the past then you know I play fast and loose with what the definition of what electronic music is. Like punk, I think electronic music is pretty much open for definition. I guess the only requirement is that it should have some electronic instrumentation and so Atom's package, his sequencer, fits the bill perfectly.

Atom & His Package is Adam Goren is our guest on today's solipsistic NATION and his set was originally record live at the University of Maryland.

In 2003 Adam performed his last show as Atom and His Package due to impending fatherhood and being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Adam now teaches chemistry and physics at the Shipley School located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and plays from time to time with Armalite.

Today on solipsistic NATION we'll listen to the fractured dubstep of Misk and EshOne, Steve Nalepa and his former students of It's Not Over Quebec and the first release from Clear Notice Recordings!

EshOne was a guest DJ on solipsistic NATION back in February and we talked about his role on the San Diego Dubstep blog San Diego's Brokenbeat. Since then he has released his new album Loving What Is.

One of the artists EshOne featured in his mix in February was Misk. He mentioned that Misk was moving aways from dubstep so when Misk announced his new album, Saturation, on Twitter I knew I had to have him on the show. It's not at all what I expected, which is a delight all in itself!

Steve Nalepa has been my most frequent guest on solipsistic NATION and that's because Steve is always up to new and interesting projects, from his solo work to collaborative efforts with Bass Science, The FMs and much more. This time he returns with a new EP he recorded with It's Not Over Quebec called, appropriately enough, Professor Nalepa vs It's Not Over Quebec.

I've said this before and I'll say it again: Steve isn't a man. He's a conversation that walks like a man. Case in point: the interview you're about to hear is roughly 30 minutes long and I only asked Steve two questions. It seemed a wasted to edit my conversation with Steve down to a mere seven minutes so I thought I'd give you the unedited version because Steve had such interesting things to day and you can listen to it here.

Finally, we'll talk with Kieron James of Clear Notice Recordings about his label's first album, Enter Calico. Two hundred shows.

I don't usually talk all that much on solipsistic NATION. Unless I'm talking with a guest I usually just say what needs to be send and then I get out of the way of the music.

But I've been producing two hundred shows since 2006. Two hundred shows!

Indulge me this rare occasion to be verbose and verklempt. When you reach a milestone like that there is, I think, a natural urge to want to sum up the experience. But how do you encapsulate 200 shows?

My dad, who has been a guest on the show, by the way, was recently commenting on how remarkable it is the thousands of people who spend countless hours building and maintaining Wikipedia or publishing on their blog or, in my case, produce an electronic music show.

I shudder to think how many hours I've spend producing solipsistic NATION over the years: pouring over new music, putting together mixes, having guests on the show, editing interviews... It's a lot of work and it's a lot of time.

But it's rewarding because I get to talk to people like Alex Paterson of The Orb or Toby Marks of Banco De Gaia. Are you kidding me? I can't believe the number of people who have been kind enough to come on the show and let me play their music.

I've got a lot of them to thank. And I've got to thank the folks at Terrorbird, Ultimae Records, BPitch Control, Ad Noiseam and all the other record labels who have been generous enough to share their music with me and make this show possible.

I'd also like to thank the folks at KYOURadio in San Francisco for broadcasting solipsistic NATION each and every Saturday night.

I don't do this often enough but I have to thanks all the photographers and artists whose graphics grace my website and each podcast who I've met on Deviant or Flickr.

Back in 2006 when I relaunched solipsistic NATION I noticed that drum and bass was going through a resurgence in popular culture. I loved catching DJs at clubs spinning amazing jungle/drum and bass sets so I welcomed the renewed interest in d 'n' b.

At the time I was listening to a lot of music from Jerona Fruits Recordings. The music on Jerona Fruits had all the muscular leanness and high end production I loved about drum and bass and non of drum and bass' sometimes embarrassing bombastic pretensions (although I'm a sucker for bombast when it works). I had the lads from Jerona Fruits on the Small World to talk about their label and play music form some of the artists on their roster.

Drum and bass has never gone away, of course. It's always been there, seething below the surface, constantly mutating into new hybrids. Now is as good as time as any to check in with Baz, who is one third of Jerona Fruits, to find out what the state of drum and bass is on 2010 and how his label has grown since we last talked.

Baz is our guest DJ on today's show and he's got a mix of select tracks of the very best Jerona Fruits has to offer. The first Friday of each month I feature a live set from an electronic musician. But here's the thing, I'm not sure today's show is actually a live set.

Let me explain.

A few months back I asked Paul D. Miller (AKA DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid) if he had a recording of one of his concerts I could play on the show. Or maybe I asked him if he's like to be a guest DJ on solipsistic NATION. I can't exactly recall. Like I said, it's been a couple of months.

This much I know: Paul sent me a mix that he played in Sudan and/or he made with his iPhone app. So is it live? I don't know but I'm going to roll with it because it's pretty awesome!

So let's talk about Paul.

Paul is a is a turntablist, a producer and an author who has pretty much been part of my world since I first embraced electronic music back in the 90s back when he was part of the Illbient scene. Since then Paul has popped up on my radar again and again with his album and his remixes (my personal favorites are the remixes he has done for the Red Hot series).

As I mentioned, Paul is also an author and has written Rhythm Science (Mediaworks Pamphlets) and was the editor of Sound Unbound: Sampling Digital Music and Culture.

Paul is also a professor of music mediated art at the European Graduate School where he co-teaches with Michael Schmidt Intensive Summer Seminars in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.

There is much, much more to Paul and will go over Paul's multifaceted background when I have him back on solipsistic NATION to talk about Sound Unbound: Sampling Digital Music and Culture. In the meantime, enjoy today's show, whether it's live or not!

On today's show I'm going to play bitpop and chiptune covers of your favorite songs!

When I first came up with the idea for today's show I thought it would be cute and played for giggles. But when I sat down and really listened to the music I realized that these bitpop and chiptune covers stripped the originals down to their essence. And these tracks still stand up. They're classics for a reason.

But the tracks on today's show don't sound great just because they're covers of great songs, they also sound great because it took a lot of ingenuity of working within the constraints of chiptunes and bitpop to make these songs shine.

By the way, nearly all the tracks on today's show came from the 8 Bit Collective website.

I really enjoy having lots of guests on solipsistic NATION. It's a lot of fun to play on track from each artist and then have them comment on their music or what their process is in making music. There's something to be said about appreciating a song on its own merits but I also think it might make us appreciate a song a bit more when you hear the musician talk about their craft.

But I have to tell you, these shows are a lot of work.

Getting today's show is the result of contacting everyone by phone or email and asking if an interview can be arranged. And then there are the follow up emails and phone calls. Not too mention coming up with a list of questions for the interviews, let alone doing the actual interview and then editing those interviews. Like I said, it's a lot of work.

And that's why I am so very happy how great this week's show is when it came together!

First of all, my guests are fantastic. We'll talk with everyone from Kraddy about mashups to Margaret Noble about her crowd funded 1984 project. And as an added bonus, a diverse as the genres of music on today's show are, they conveniently segue together and nothing sounds incongruous.

From Kraddy's glitch hop inspired mashup we careen off of two tracks from the Rare Grooves album (which you can download for free, by the way) Colin Steve drops some, ah, knowledge about Knowledge Magazine. Music from Carmen's album, Looking Through Leaves, unfolds to the dub laden strains of Eraldo Bernocchi & Blackfilm. I had Blackfilm on the show last year where he mentioned an upcoming project with Eraldo Bernocchi. The album is called Along The Corridors and it's simply amazing. And this takes us to Margaret's Noble's 1984 project. I don't know how but everything fits and makes sense.

So here's the deal. When I first started featuring live sets on solipsistic NATION it was a segment I thought I would do from time to time. It took a while but it soon became a regular segment on the show.

I really like the live segments because on the face of it live electronic music seems like an oxymoron. Artists could easily just press play on their laptop and walk away and that would be the show. But obviously it's more than that and each artist has a different approach to live performances. Their aesthetics are different, their gear is different and the venues are different. It's those variables that make the live segments so engaging, not to mention it's live! There's so much room for improvisation and, gasp, failure!

But there's the thing, I often found myself scrambling at last minute to get a live set and an interview with the featured artist for the next show. Worse, sometimes I'd have to skip the segment all together because I didn't have anything for the show. So about a year ago I emailed a lot of artists I like and invited them on the show to feature recordings of their live sets. Makes sense, right? Build up a surplus of live sets and never have to worry about scrambling again.

Some of the live sets that I got were less than an hour. No problem, I just padded out the rest of the show with a few studio tracks from the featured artist. But sometimes I'd get live sets that were considerably less than an hour and my solution was to pair those set with other live sets of similar duration.

Here we are a year later and I'm down to the last handful of the shorter live sets. I could have waited another year and pair those remaining sets with other sets but I decided to release them today with an extended show. I just didn't want to put off these live sets any longer.

So here you are: live sets from Forensics, ill.gates and Terminal 11! If you like what you hear then support them by seeing them when they tour your home town or by purchasing their music.

As I mentioned, today's show is the last of the live sets that I accumulated a year ago. But I only needed to learn the lesson of scrambling once and I'll have live sets from Prefuse 73, DJ Spooky, the Nortec Collective and The Bombay Dub Orchestra so stay stuned.

On today's show we'll talk with artists who are creating music with Apple's iPads, iPhones and the iPod Touch. We'll find out why they are using these devices to make music and what are the challenges and limitations of those devices.

So why do a who featuring music created with iPads, iPhones and the iPod Touch?

I think the answer is pretty simple. There are a lot of different smart phones and MP3 players but Apple is the company that got it right. These devices are incredibly powerful but easy and intuitive to use and developers have created some wonderful applications for them. And those apps are often equally easy and intuitive to use. And that means there are a lot of people walking around with these little handheld computers with the capability to create music and that's a wonderful thing.

Apple's iPad is not the first tablet device to hit the market but it is the first successful tablet. Wildly successful, in fact. And once again developers are coming up with some wonderful apps.

And the iPad is one of the reasons I wanted to do today's show because a lot of people are claiming that it's ust a media consumption device or that it's just a big iPhone. As today's show proves the iPad is also a media creation device and it clearly not just a big iPhone.

Our guests will be Rana June, Jared DiDomenico and Brad Naprixas from Nuclear O'Reilly, Brian Roberts of Doctor Popular, Marshall Law and Speak Onion's Dan Abatemarco.

Rana June is Rana Sobhany and is the author of Mobilize! Marketing Mobile Content in an iPhone and iPad Era and is the world's first iPad DJ. Nuclear O'Reilly released Phoning It In, the world's first iPhone album. Doctor Popular is currently working on an album that utilizes the iPhone called Beeps and Smudges. William Marshall uses the iPhone as a DJ tool and Dan Abatemarco of Speak Onion uses the iPhone to bludgeon his audiences in his live sets.

Today on solipsistic NATION we'll talk with Ellen Allien. Ellen is a musician, a DJ, a producer, a fashion designer and the founder of BPitch Control.

I'm very excited about today's show because I have a list of music labels that I've wanted to feature on solipsistic NATION and I've wanted to do a show dedicated to BPitch Control for a very long time.

I'm not a big fan of techno because I find the genre fairly conservative and boring. Partly this is due to the constraints of the genre but mostly it is due to the lack of imagination of musicians who make techno. Not so with the artists on BPitch Control. From Modeselektor to Sasha Funke, all the music on BPitch Control is creative, fun and pushes the boundaries of what techno can be.

Ellen herself sums up all of that. She is a musician, a DJ, a producer, a fashion designer and the founder of BPitch Control. Her latest album, Dust is due for release today so the timing for today's show is perfect! It was difficult to choose which track from Dust to choose but in the end I settled on "Huibuh" because it is a perfect example of Ellen's ability to make techno her own by infusing "Huibuh" with Afro-Peruvian and Cuban elements without using those elements for mere exotica.

I missed last month's live set on solipsistic NATION because my life got pretty hectic. But I'm back this month with a live set from Mad EP recorded at the TODAYSART festival in 2008.

TODAYSART believes strongly in fresh and vigorous creativity; and in the new shapes of expression, and the rising talents who boldly explore the possibilities of the new and controversial stages where they can express their talent.

I had Mad EP on the show back in September with O’ Slick to talk about their Brimstone Bangers release and asked Mad EP if he had a recording of a live set he'd like to share on the show. Mad EP said he did and set me a rocking set and I'm psyched to share it with you on today's show!

Mad EP will also be back on the show later this month or in June with a live set he's putting together exclusively for solipsistic NATION.

Earlier this year Hecq came on the show with a mix that covered the gamut of Hecq's musical styles: from ambient to breakbeat. It occurred to me that as much as I dig Mad EP's live set it's pretty much all hip hop and doesn't convey the range of his musical capabilities. Mad EP felt the same way after listening to Hecq's mix we both agreed that Mad EP should do a mix too.

Unfortunately, Mad EP broke his hand so until he heals that mix will have to wait. Until then, rock out to Mad EP's TODAYSART 2008 live set!

Today's pretty unusual for solipsistic NATION because I'm playing songs that came up on my iPhone while on shuffle.

I'm only going to do this once because I'm pretty anal retentive on how I put the shows together. Behind the scenes I lovingly and painstakingly craft the mixes you hear. To just let my iPhone randomly choose the tracks unnerves me. Oh, sure, I've gotten ideas for shows while listening on shuffle but sometimes my iPhone will play terrible tracks. Or great tracks that would sound terrible together in a mix. But I've decided to throw caution to the wind and just see what happens.

It's kind of exciting because today's show is just as much a surprise for me as it will be for you!

The other thing that's different about today's show is that I decided that as long as I'm going to let my iPhone pick the songs I might as well as record the solipsistic NATION IDs on my iPhone too. And if I'm going to record the IDs on my iPhone then why not record the IDs in various spots in San Diego and take photos of those locations with my iPhone? You can see the photos below.

One spot I recorded an ID is at the Krakatoa Cafe. The Krakatoa Cafe is in my neighborhood and I've met several of the guests that have appeared on solipsistic NATION at Krakatoa such as Riley Warren and Stuntdouble. I also recorded an ID on my roof deck where I often relax when I convert editions of solipsistic NATION to MP3. One ID was recorded at Luigi's Pizzeria. I'm more of a Chicago deep dish guy but I have to admit that Luigi's New York style pizza is pretty dope. Finally, I recorded an ID at the Cuban Cigar Factory because I was trying to find a Perdomo Lot 23 Churchill Natural at Cameron Reilly's, host of the G'day World podcast, recommendation. No luck finding the cigar, though.

That's the show. Hope you like it despite the unevenness of the mix but, hey, that's what happens when you allow randomness into your life.

Back in the day blogs were considered pretty exotic. They covered everything from knitting to Star Wars and were more often than not very, very personal. A decade or so later and blogs are still pretty personal but they're not longer quite so exotic. Seems like everyone has a blog these days and everyone reads blogs.

I myself follow 40+ blogs. Some blogs are by my friends or various people I find interesting while the rest are news blogs or blogs related to the industry I work in. And, of course, I follow quite a few blogs about electronic music so I can keep up to date.

The problem is that blogs are like music: 99% of it is crap. Either the writing is terrible or I completely disagree with what most of the blogs are covering. Not so with Headphone Commute, which is a blog I love.

I've been reading Headphone Commute for a couple of years now and for good reason. Headphone Commute covers the music I care about and exposes me to music I've never heard of before. The album reviews and label profiles are spot on. Headphone Commute does interviews are concise and to the point with everyone from Frank Riggio to Rena Jones.

If you're looking for a quality blog to read about electronic music then I can't recommend Headphone Commute enough and it is with great pleasure that I present to you a mix from Headphone Commute.

The mix is called DSM-IV-TR, which is short for Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which was republished in the 4th text revision back in 2000. Headphone Commute's mix will take us from moody IDM to glitch to techno to drum and bass to dubstep and to music that defies genres. I'm going to keep today's show notes short because it's late and I really need to go to bed.

Each week I get anywhere from a dozen to 50 or so tracks to review for upcoming shows on solipsistic NATION. I will then load them on to my iPhone and play them at random throughout the week, or in some cases, months.

As I listen to the tracks I will give them a one to five star rating. Anything that gets one star I just delete because let's face it, who wants to hear that dreck. Any track I find mildly interesting gets a two star rating. Tracks that I think are solid get three star rating and the few tracks I think are top notch get a four to five star rating. Ninety percent of the time it's the tracks with a three to five star rating that make it on to the show.

When it comes time to put together a mix for solipsistic NATION I usually review the tracks that I gave a high rating to and see if I can form some sort of theme or narrative out of them.

Sometimes I will jot down notes on my iPhone which tracks I think would be great for a mix, which is how today's show came together.

And what is the theme for today's show? Bass! All the track's you'll hear on today's show are guaranteed to make your sub woofer throb. In fact, you might want to crank your sub woofer up a notch or two for extra effect.

Okay, that's enough for today. Time for me to saw some logs.

I'm back!

I missed last week's show because there was a blackout in my neighborhood. When the electricity came back on it only came back on in half of my house so my computer was down for a couple of days. It kind of worked out because I've been planning on taking a vacation form solipsistic NATION for some time now so I could recharge my batteries. Now I'm ready to get back into it!

Today on solipsistic NATION I've got some absolutely beautiful ambient music in store for you. We'll hear from Master Margherita, Circular, Hybrid Leisureland, Olan Mill, Wilt, Pjusk, Solar Fields, Talvihorros, Lovesliescrushing and Nest.

Master Margherita's album, Ambient Manifold, was released on Bakshish Music and I wanted to mention Bakshish Music because they describe their label as a Temporary Autonomous Zone, which was a term coined by Hakim Bey. A Temporary Autonomous Zone, or TAZ, is a new territory of the moment that is created on the boundary line of established regions. Hakim Bey's idea was that any attempt at permanence that goes beyond the moment will inevitably lead to a structured system that inevitably stifles individual creativity. Hakim Bey believed that Hakim Bey it is creativity that is real empowerment.

I lost count of how many times I read Hakim Bey's Temporary Autonomous Zone and I wanted to share it with you because I think you might enjoy it too. You can read Hakim Bey's Temporary Autonomous Zone online here.

I don't know this about me but I'm anal retentive about how I put together mixes from solipsistic NATION. Where other DJs will do a set on the fly I know how my set is going to sound well in advance and plan my segues down to the nanosecond.

But here's the thing: my day job has been consuming my life. The work has been challenging and a hell of a lot of fun but it hasn't left me with a lot of free time to meticulously put together a show. Out of necessity I went old school.

Back when I used to DJ at WMFO 91.5FM I would sometimes show up at the station 30 minutes to an hour before my show totally unprepared. I'd grab a couple bricks of CDs and a handful of vinyl and go into an empty studio and quickly previous the new releases for hidden gems and string together a mix.

It's not the way I like to spin but working that quickly did keep me on my toes and take my show in unexpected directions. And that's what I did for today's show: just grab a bunch of stuff I've been been listening to and digging and seeing if I can somehow tie them together for a show for you to enjoy.

I'm really excited about today's show because I get to DJ for the first time in months!

Since 2010 we've had guest DJs and live sets from everyone from The Orb to Ben Frost to Hecq to Planet Terror Records. They've been great shows. Fantastic shows. But all that time I've been itching to get behind the virtual turntables and spin a set of my own. So like I said, I'm very excited.

The first Friday of each month on solipsistic NATION I feature a live set from an artists and today's show is a recording of Ben Frost's performance at St Katherine's, a 16th century Gothic church in Krakow for Unsound in 2008.

Ben Frost is a musician, composer and producer who draws upon minimalism, post-punk, black metal and noise in his music. Ben's album, Theory of Machines, gained him critical acclaim and his most recent album, By the Throat, cemented his place as an artist on the global stage.

Ben joins us today from the Bedroom Community studios in Iceland.

It's been a long week for me here at solipsistic NATION. Last weekend I got hit with some sort of bug that had me bedridden for a couple of days. I've spent the rest of this week digging myself out from under a pile of work that accumulated while I was down. Recording the voice overs for today's show while sick was not a lot of fun either.

But you don't need to know about all that.

EshOne is a musicians and an impresario and runs the San Diego Dubstep website. EshOne is also affiliated with San Diego's Brokenbeat.

February has been a great month here on solipsistic NATION. So far we've had Alex Paterson on the show with a live set from The Orb, which was epic!

Last week Kristian Peters came on the show and we played select tracks from his label, Sending Orbs.

Next week EshOne will come on solipsistic NATION to talk about San Diego Dubstep and play a mix that's guaranteed to make your sub woofer throb.

And then we have today's show.

Our guest is Ben Lukas Boysen who records and performs under the name Hecq.

How to describe Ben's music?

We'll you'll hear for yourself on today's show. But let me quote HC from his Headphone Commute blog. He describes Ben's music this way:

"Twisted rhythms swirling around your brain like an inhaled sip of wine and a gulped breath of smoke. Divine soundscapes crawling beneath the barbed wire of the restraining acoustic prison, begging to rather be shot in the back then remain draining their minimalism onto the cold surface of tears and blood."

Ben has put together a mix for us that is equal part spine tingling and mind blowing and he joins us today from Berlin.

If you've been listening to solipsistic NATION to any length of time you know that once a month I showcase a record label that is releasing absolutely fantastic music you need to hear. If you're new to solipsistic NATION, well, now you know.

This edition of solipsistic NATION is different. Last month on Twitter I asked what labels I should feature on solipsistic NATION and many people said I should showcase Sending Orbs. I had heard of Sending Orbs thanks to the Headphone Commute blog who had reviewed Yagya's Rigning album. So when folks on Twitter said I should feature Sending Orbs on the show I jumped at the chance to have Kristian Peters, the co-founder of Sending Orbs, on solipsistic NATION.

Sending Orbs is an electronic music label located in the Netherlands that was founded in 2004. Sending Orbs' main goal is to release as much beautiful and high quality electronic music as possible. Sending Orbs distinguish themselves from other labels by conducting a severe artist selection, a fair treatment to their artists and a high art standard.

Speaking of high art, Jeroen Advocaat does most of the album art for Sending Orbs releases. Jeroen's artwork is wonderful and gives the label a consistent look and feel and visually expresses the sound of Sending Orbs.

Once a month on solipsistic NATION I feature a live performance from an electronic musician and boy do I have a treat for you today because today's is a live set from The Orb recorded at the A.B. in Brussels Septembr 25th of 2009! As an added bonus, we're also going to talk to The Orb's co-founder, Alex Paterson.

The Orb was founded by Alex Paterson and The KLF's Jimmy Cauty in 1988. The Orb began as ambient and dub DJs in London and developed a cult following among clubbers "coming down" from drug-induced highs.

The Orb has released nine studio albums to date as well as several remix albums and live albums and while there are many rotating members of The Orb Alex Paterson has always remained at The Orb's core.

I'm a huuuge fan of The Orb! One of my favorite memories of The Orb was listening with my soundman Harry to The Orb's Live 93 double album while out of our minds at WMFO. At one point we were both leaning out the window staring at the sky howling as snow pelted our faces while The Orb's "Towers of Dub" throbbed over the speakers.

As I said, I'm a huge fan of The Orb and I love all their albums so I'm thrilled to play their live set from Brussels and have Alex Paterson join us from his home in the UK!

A few weeks back I got an email from Steve Nalepa. Steve's been on solipsistic NATION in the past and Steve has always been on top of what's new and fresh in the electronic music scene. So when Steve mentioned several students from his Music Technology class that he teaches at Chapman University who were performing with him I knew I had to have them on the show.

As I said, Steve has been on solipsistic NATION several times. Steve's live set that he performed for the Dub Beautiful Collective was featured on the show back in January of 2008. Steve also performed with Matt B of Bass Science and one of their live sets from Tokyo was featured on the show in September of 2008. More recently Steve appeared on the show to talk about his Flatlands:Remixes album.

Henry Allen and Preston Walker are Virtual Boy and met at Chapman University and joined forced in Steve's Music Technology class. Virtual Boy's How Long Does It Take To Get To Space? has been released on Sound Tribe Sector 9 after they were hired to remix Nalepa’s Sunflowers single.

David Streit is FuzZ. David is also one third of theGREENLAB, a film production company working with experimental musicians in and around Los Angeles. theGREENLAB are currently hard at work on a documentary about the Low End Theory club in Los Angeles.

Andrew Swanson is St Andrew. For the past 10 months, Andrew has worked alongside famed UK electronic musician Adam Freeland, helping create the Freeland Live set for Glastonbury 2009 and beyond.

It's been a cold, windy, rainy week here in Southern California. I'm not complaining because we typically have weather of 72 degrees and clear skies for most of the year so one month of rain is a pretty decent trade off for living n a place that is otherwise a paradise.

I'm actually happy about the rain we've been having because our guest DJ this week is Ingo Vogelmann and the mix he put together for today's show complements the weather here in Southern California. Ingo's mix is moody and reflective. Like I said, it goes perfect with rainy weather.

You might know the name Vogelmann. Ingo is a very popular DJ and producer with many followers. If you're a frequent listener of friskyRadio then you've no doubt heard him spinning progressive and ambient sets. Ingo is also a resident DJ for Stylecharts.de at Rheingold, Düsseldorf (Germany), PrivateMonkey in Düsseldorf and at Club 3Klang in Essen (Germany).

On today's show we've got a fantastic mix from the mighty Riley Warren Riley is a DJ and a producer and is the founder of Zero Digital.

Riley is a fellow San Diegan who I met through Twitter (you can follow her on Twitter at http://twitter.com/RileyWarren).

I love Twitter. I know that in a few years we'll look back on Twitter the same way we think of, say, Yahoo's instant messenger: just another tool that we take for granted. But today, right now, I think it's a fantastic tool for communicating with a large swathe of people. I've been using Twitter to talk with listeners of solipsistic NATION about what they like about the show or invite them to participate in the interviews with my guests. I've also used Twitter to build relationship with musicians and record labels. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Anyway, back to Riley.

We had been talking back and forth on Twitter and when I earned that she also lives in San Diego I suggested that we get together for lunch at the Krakatoa Cafe. I had a great time talking with Riley about her career as a DJ and a producer and her record label. I invited her to put together a mix for solipsistic NATION and here it is. I know you're gonna love it!

I think next week I'm going to bring things way down with an ambient set. What with Riley's mix and last week's mix from Lot49's Meat Katie and the live show from Somatic Responses the week before that I think it's time to kick out the space jams.
