Looking for a new home can be a long, arduous process. Here are some apps to help you through the whole process.BR>
Solution #1

If you like to drive around to look, bring your a laptop or tablet with mobile broadband with you. When you see something you like, you can Google the address to find more information about that house. Mobile Broadband

Solution #2

Alternatively, with your mobile device, you can use the Zillow and Realtor.com apps to set up filters and search criteria (e.g., price range, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and more) to narrow down your search. Both apps are available on iOS and Android. Home Snap is another useful (iOS-only) app. With this app, you take a picture of the house you’re looking at and the app will return information about it. Zillow (iOS)
Zillow (Android)
Realtor.com (iOS)
Realtor.com (Android)
Home Snap (iOS)

Solution #3

Once you’ve found a house, an App called Zillow Mortgage (available on iOS and Android) will help you figure out your mortgage payments. Zillow Mortgage (iOS)
Zillow Mortgage (Android)

When inspiration strikes or when you have a little time, you may want access to your files from wherever you are. Here are some ways.

Solution #1

For Apple devices, the iCloud service provides 5GB of free storage that can be accessed anywhere by your mobile device as well as PC. Automatic backup is included. Additional storage can be purchased. For PC or Android, Microsoft’s SkyDrive service gives 25 GB of free storage. iCloud (iOS)
SkyDrive (Android)

Solution #2

Dropbox is a very popular, platform-independent cloud storage service. The free service includes 2 GB. DropBox

Solution #3

Instead of a cloud service, you can use iTwin to remotely and securely connect to your hard drive from anywhere. iTwin uses a two-part, USB connected device to establish the connection between two computers. You split the device, connecting one part to one computer and the other part to the other computer. The computers can be anywhere. The size of your hard drive limits the storage space. There is also an iTwin multi version that creates direct lines for multiple people. iTwin is supported on Macs and PCs. iTwin

My Mobile Life #39: How to Prepare Better for Taxes

April 15th is always stressful, trying to find all the receipts, papers, etc. that you need to file your tax. Here are some ways to help you organize.

Solution #1

If you are a 1040EZ filer, you can use the TurboTax SnapTax version to file your taxes. [1040EZ filers must meet the following criteria - less than $100,000 income from W-2, interest, or unemployment (if single, $120,000 if married), no real estate, and no kids.] This app is available on iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire. All you have to do is take a photo of your W-2 and answer a few questions to file. TurboTax SnapTax (iOS)
TurboTax SnapTax (Android)

Solution #2

If your life is more complex, you may need to use Quicken or Quickbooks to keep track of your expenses throughout the year. You can use NeatReceipts to scan your receipts. Once scanned, you can categorize them with NeatWorks or export them to Quicken, Quickbooks or TurboTax. You can even export as PDF or an Excel spreadsheet. An alternative to the NeatReceipts mobile scanner is an even smaller scanner, the SlimScan. This scanner fits in your wallet. Quicken
QuickBooks
NeatReceipts
SlimScan

Solution #3

If you need a more complete financial picture to help set budgets to meet financial goals, Mint.com is an online service that puts all your assets together so you can manage your finances. Mint.com also offers a mobile app (iOS and Android). If you are a road warrior, an app called MileBug can help you track mileage. This app is available on iOS, Android, and Windows 7 Mobile. Mint.com
Mint.com (iOS)
Mint.com (Android)
MileBug (iOS)
MileBug (Android)
MileBug (Windows)

If you cannot survive without your mobile device, you need to take steps to help find it if something were to happen.

Solution #1

If you have an iPhone, “Find My iPhone” is an app that is part of the iCloud suite that tracks your phone using a map. It also offers a remote lock so no one who finds it can use it and it even plays a sound to help you find it. As a final step, you can remotely wipe the phone clean. For other phones, you have to find out what security measures they have. Your mobile carrier can offer services to help recover your device as well. Find My iPhone (iOS)

Solution #2

“Lookout Mobile Security”, an app available on both iOS and Android, not only helps you find your device but also protects it from viruses. Lookout Mobile Security (iOS)
Lookout Mobile Security (Android)

Solution #3

Another way is to use a subscription-based service called “FoundIt!”. The service comes with a pack of stickers with QR codes that you put on your devices. These tags are associated with you but your information stored in the FoundIt system is not accessible to anyone who may have found your devices. FoundIt!

The Internet is a key component in our lives - giving us access to all kinds of information and connecting us to “everyone”. How can you leverage this 24/7 access for your benefit?

Solution #1

Just because connectivity is there and is available 24/7, YOU don’t have to be. Be online and available when you want (or need) to be. Set your boundaries.

Solution #2

Don’t be a slave to your emails. If you’re waiting for a particular email, don’t keep check your inbox; instead set up filters so when that specific email comes in, you get a text message.

Solution #3

With the 24/7 availability of information, you also have the ability to respond real-time but is that a wise thing to do? Don’t react react in real time. Think about it first.

			<itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

Your mobile device can be vulnerable to malicious hacks. You can take steps to protect yourself and your device.

Solution #1

Social engineering is a method used by hackers to manipulate you into giving them your personal information. When you receive emails or SMS messages with web links, you should think twice before clicking on that link (through your mobile device or your computer). Use another way to authenticate the sender (e.g., going directly to their website and logging in). Social engineering (on Wikipedia)

Solution #2

If you allow your personal information to be left on voicemail, consider how secure is the access to the voice messages. Hackers can spoof you caller ID. If you can retrieve your messages with ONLY your caller ID, you are vulnerable. Simply put a PIN on your voicemail account.

Solution #3

Beware of malware in the apps you download to your mobile devices. Android is especially vulnerable because it uses an open OS. Fortunately, Google has added a layer of security called Bouncer. Bouncer analyzes new and existing apps in the Android Market for known malware, spyware, and trojans. But you should take the additional step and protect yourself. Look at the descriptions and reviews of the apps. Also, every app (even bad apps) must tell you what it wants to do on your mobile device. Android Market

My Mobile Life #31 - e-Reading

			<itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

More and more books are available in a digital format. Here are the basics of eBooks.

Solution #1

There are many formats available for eBooks - ePub, PDF, TXT, docs, mobi, and AZW. The standard is ePub, which works on most devices, except the Amazon Kindle. ePub and PDFs are the best formats compatible with most devices. Unfortunately, PDFs are set font size so you would have to zoom in to increase font size.

Solution #2

If a dedicated reader is desired, you can get an eReader like an Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook, or Sony Reader. When considering which one is right for you, the difference may be the screen type. Older readers use e-Ink screens that makes reading easier than LCD screens. Also, each type of device has its own eBook store and infrastructure. For example, Amazon Kindle allows you to download ebooks on wifi enabled devices. iOS devices use the iBooks store. Kindle DX
Nook
Sony Reader

Solution #3

Most eBook stores, including Barnes & Noble and the Amazon marketplace, have apps that enable your tablet to also become an e-reader. Devices such as an iPad or Kindle Fire can download apps that allow them to read eBook in most formats (e.g., ePubs). Barnes and Nobles Bookstore
Amazon Kindle Store

My Mobile Life #29: How to Choose (Mobile Phone) Carriers

			<itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

With many mobile carriers available, how do you know which one is right for you? These are considerations for selecting a US mobile carrier.

Solution #1

In the US, there are two technologies - GSM and CDMA. The technologies are not compatible. GSM uses SIMs; CDMA does not. SIMs can be moved from one phone to another when you change phones, making it easier to change phones. AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM while Verizon and Sprint use CDMA. Also, consider the carrier’s coverage of the area you are in. The carriers do publish their coverage map but personal experience and recommendation (from friends, family and co-workers) is even better. In the US, there are other carriers who lease capacity from major carriers who have built networks. These carriers are called Mobile Virtual Network Operators. Boost Mobile and Jitterbug are examples of these types of operators. Boost Mobile focuses on the younger demographic while Jitterbug focuses on seniors. AT&T Wireless
AT&T coverage
T-Mobile
T-Mobile coverage
Verizon Wireless
Verizon Wireless coverage
Sprint
Sprint coverage
Boost Mobile
Boost Coverage coverage
Jitterbug
Jitterbug coverage

Solution #2

Different carriers will offer different phones. If you must have a particular phone, the choice of which carrier to use may be made for you. The cost of a phone can be cheaper if you commit to a 2-year contract.

Solution #3

There are a few things to consider when choosing a plan - “Friends and Family” minutes that do not count toward your phone minutes, data plan or not, and 3G or 4G or WiMax, or HSPA (speed of data network). 4G is much faster than 3G but it is generally not available everywhere 3G is. 4G can download up to 100Mbit/second while WiMax can go up to 128Mbit/second. HSPA is faster than 3G but less than 4G. 4G (on Wikipedia)

When you’re always on the go, it’s hard to keep up with the latest breaking events happening around you. Here are some suggestions that can help.

Solution #1

Flipboard, an IOS app, collects content from social networks (and more) and presents it to you in a magazine format that you can flip through. All you need to do is to select your feeds. Pulse, available on iOS and Android, is a comparable app that uses a thumbnail format instead of magazine-style. Flipboard (iOS)
Pulse (iOS)
Pulse (Android)

Solution #2

If you want a device dedicated to just bringing you news, check out the wifi-enabled Sony Dash. It features a 7-inch LCD touchscreen and allows you to download apps to view news, traffic, weather, and more. You just need to download the Chumby Apps that you want. Sony Dash Personal Internet Viewer
Chumby Apps

Solution #3

If you’re in the car, car services such as Ford Sync and Chevy MyLink can connect via Bluetooth to your smartphone for content. You control the content play with voice-activated commands. Ford Sync
Chevy MyLink

My Mobile Life 27: How to Shoot a Mobile Show

			<itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

What does it take to shoot video on the go? We’re taking you behind the scenes of how we make My Mobile Life.

Solution #1

The first important aspect of any video is lighting. If there is sunlight, we need to direct it appropriately (towards Cali, of course) with a Neewer reflector. If there is not enough light, we use a small but powerful portable light panel from Cowboy Studio. Neewer reflector
Cowboy Studio light panel

Solution #2

We typically record 2-4 episodes on a single shoot so the shows are written in advance. During the shoot, we use the ProPrompter HDi2. It’s lightweight and perfect for our mobile, on-the-go shoot. ProPrompter HDi2

Solution #3

Of course, camera and audio are also key. We use the Canon 5D for the quality of the picture with sharp colors and shallow depth of field. The Canon Vixia is also used but we prefer the Canon 5D. Because we’re on the go, audio is captured on the Sennheiser lavalier mic attached to Cali. However, the best audio can only be captured with a shotgun mic. The audio is recorded onto the Zoom recorder. Canon 5D
Canon Vixia HF S20
Sennheiser EW100G3 wireless Mics
Zoom recorder

My Mobile Life #26: How to Text More

			<itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

If you enjoy texting and you do it a lot, here are some tools to help you text even more.

Solution #1

Instead of having a separate plan for texting or a plan with a limited number of text messages, you can text through your data plan with an app called TextPlus. Available in both iOS and Android. It is easy to set up and it supports sending pictures as well as sounds in text messages. textPlus (iOS)
textPlus (Android)

Solution #2

How about texting to a group of friends or your family? With GroupMe (available on iOS or Android), you can text through a data plan or via SMS. You can create your profile, share your location, and send images. GroupMe (iOS)
GroupMe (Android)

Solution #3

Using emoticons can be more descriptive than words. Emoji (an app on iOS) has a wide range of emoticons (and more) to help you express yourself in text better and shorter. With Android devices, you need both the Handcent SMS app and the Handcent Emoji plug-in. Emoji (iOS)
Handcent SMS (Android)
Handcent Emoji plug-in (Android)

Looking for something to do or something to eat but don’t know what or where? Even if you’re in your home neighborhood or out of town on vacation or business, there are apps that help you get around, find the attractions as if you are are a local.

Solution #1

An app like CityCentral on iOS or Dex on Android provides local business and community information so you can choose what to do - go to a concert, eat at a restaurant, or see a movie (and more) based on your location. You can also try Roamz (available on iOS only). It is a location-based app that combines your preferences with the local hotspots to give you recommendations. The more you use it the more the app learns about what you like and will provide even more tailored suggestions for you no matter where you are. CityCentral (iOS)
Dex (Android)
Roamz (iOS)

Solution #2

Now that you’ve found something to do, you may need a little “help”. Groupon is a service that lets you in on the best deals. Just download the app that is available on iOS and Android. Groupon (iOS)
Groupon (Android)

Solution #3

You can share your experience with others using apps such as Yelp or FourSquare. You can also choose where you go based on others reviews. These apps are available on iOS and Android. Yelp (iOS)
Yelp (Android)
FourSquare (iOS)
FourSquare (Android)

Here are some apps that help you get freebies.

Solution #1

If you are already shopping, you can get reward points by scanning specific items while you shop. You can then redeem reward points for store gift cards, music downloads, restaurant vouchers, and more. Get even more points when you buy qualifying items. Just install the Shopkick or Checkpoint app on your mobile device to get started. Both are available on iOS or Android. Shopkick (iOS)
Shopkick (Android)
CheckPoints (iOS)
CheckPoints (Android)

Solution #2

For your entertainment fun, you can “check-in” to watch your favorite TV show, watch a movie, play a video game, and more. As you are doing certain things, you can earn stickers, and stickers can earn you rewards. Download the GetGlue app to your iOS or Android device. Viggle is another app (available only on iOS) that offers rewards for those who watches a lot of TV. GetGlue (iOS)
GetGlue (Android)
Viggle (iOS)

Solution #3

Companies also offer specials and free stuff.
My Mobile Life #22: How to Digitize Your Business Card

			<itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

We meet many people and, usually, you exchange contact information. Here are some ways you can digitize your information to share with others and all the cards you received.

Solution #1

Bump is an app available on both iOS and Android. You can exchange your information with someone else by bumping your phones. Bumping an iPhone with an Android phone is not supported. Bump (iOS)
Bump (Android)

Solution #2

You can use a QR (quick response) code. The code can take a person directly to your contact website or social profile. With an app like Paperlinks, you can create you own QR code and scan other QR codes with your mobile device. Another app called Skanz not only allows you to create your own QR code but also your own Skansite that would provide links to your website or social profile. You can even get your QR code printed on many things. Both Paperlinks and Skanz are available on iOS and Android. Paperlinks (iOS)
Paperlinks (Android)
Skanz (iOS)
Skanz (Android)

Solution #3

You can digitize the cards you receive with apps like ScanBizCards and CamCard. It’s simple... you take a picture of the business card and the app uses character recognition to read all the data. It’s not always perfect but it’s a good start. Both apps are available on iOS and Android.
My Mobile Life #20: How to Take your Photos Social

Sharing your photos with others can be hard to do. These tips will hopefully make it a little easier.

Solution #1

Your phone already has a convenient way to share your photos. With an iPhone, from your Photo Roll, you can select to share your photos on Twitter. From the galleries on your Android device, you can share your photos via Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, or Picassa.

Solution #2

Apps such as Instagram and 100 Cameras in 1 (both are available on iOS) not only help you edit your photos but they also offer an easy way to share them with captions, geotags, and more. On any phone (iOS or Android), the camera “app” has a share button to allow easy sharing. Instagram (iOS)
100 Cameras in 1 (iOS)

Solution #3

On Facebook or Google+, you can use the “Photos” menu to share your photos. On most Twitter apps, you can add photos as “attachments”.

TITLE: My Mobile Life #: How to Get Started with Mobile Gaming SHORT DESCRIPTION: Are you into fun and games? Cali gives you some options and shares her favorites.

LONG DESCRIPTION: We’ve come a long ways from having to go to an arcade to play games to having your own consoles to being able to play games on your mobile devices. Let’s explore your gaming options.

Solution #1

Nintendo 3DS and the PlayStation Vita are rivals for your gaming pleasure. Nintendo 3DS supports glasses-free 3D gaming, and you can take 3D pictures and video with it. The PlayStation Vita offers a more sophisticated gaming experience with enhanced graphics and wide screen. Nintendo 3DS
Playstation Vita

Solution #2

Angry Birds, available on IOS and Android, is one of the most popular games of all time. You should also check out Plants vs Zombies, available on IOS and Android. There are many more... just browse. If you’re a creature of habit and miss the joystick, there are options for your mobile device - JoyStick-It and Fling-Mini joystick. Angry Birds (iOS)
Angry Birds (Android)
Plants vs Zombies (iOS)
Plants vs Zombies (Android)
JoyStick-It
Fling-Mini joystick

Solution #3

If you prefer the intricate, high graphics games available on game consoles or powerful PCs, now there is an option with OnLive. This app streams the game to your mobile device but is currently only available on Android. You do need stable Internet connectivity for the best experience. The app is free but you still have to pay for the game or you can get a subscription. OnLive (Android)

KEYWORDS games, mobile games, nintendo 3ds, cali, lewis, mobile, life, mobilelife, cell, phone, tablet, android, ios, iphone, ipad, apps, gadgets, tips, tricks, lifestyle, apple, google

My Mobile Life #16: How to take your Music everywhere with you

If you have lots of songs you want to take with you everywhere you go but there’s not enough storage on your mobile device, here are some ways to “take” more with you.

Solution #1

Pandora is an Internet, online service that allows you to enter in a favorite band, artist or song and it’ll play you songs that are like them. The basic service is free. Pandora is available on both iOS and Android. Pandora (iOS)
Pandora (Android)

Solution #2

When you want to listen to your specific favorite artists or songs or albums, there are two On-Demand services - Spotify and Rdio. These two services are similar. The service allows you to play from your own library as well as theirs (without buying the song) when you’re online or offline. The free service allows limited listening. Both are available for iOS as well as Android. Spotify (iOS)
Spotify (Android)
Rdio (iOS)
Rdio (Android)

Solution #3

Google Music is a cloud-based, interactive service to store your music, share with others, browse and buy music. You can stream music to your mobile device or sync playlists for offline listening. Google Music is available only on Android. Google Music (Android)

My Mobile Life #12: How to Keep your Kids Safe in a Mobile World

			<itunes:author>Cali Lewis</itunes:author>

Kids having access to the world through the web and having the world access them in return can be good and bad. Let’s explore ways to keep them safe.

Solution #1

Use a browser that will allow you to control what your kids can see. For example, Kid Mode extensions for Firefox and Chrome. KidZui is on Firefox. Chrome (Kid Mode)
Firefox Kid Mode
KidZui

Solution #2

On mobile phones, use the Parental Controls or Restrictions. You can choose to turn off the phone camera. Turn off location services, and restrict In-app purchases. Also, most phone service providers provide a parental control service (e.g., blocking numbers and limiting the number of text messages). AT&T Smart Limits

Solution #3

You can use your kids mobile phones to track them in real time. Some applications (e.g., Glympse) even provide a history of where they’ve been instead of just their current location. For iPhones, you also have Find My iPhone and Find My Friends. Life360 and Google Latitude (available on both Android and iOS) provides even more details. You should also have the First-Aid app on your mobile device. Glympse (iOS)
Glympse (Android)
Find My iPhone (iOS)
Find My Friends (iOS)
Life360 (iOS)
Life360 (Android)
Google Latitude (iOS)
Google Latitude (All Mobile Devices)
First Aid (iOS)
First Aid (Android)

All support both iOS and Android. Dropbox (Android)
Dropbox (iOS)
Evernote (Android)
Evernote (iOS)
Google Docs (Android)

Solution #2

If Microsoft Office is a must, you can use Quickoffice Pro HD, which has been optimized for a tablet interface. On iOS, you can also use the iWork suite. Quickoffice Pro HD (Android)
Quickoffice Pro HD (iOS)
iWork

Solution #3

You will also need some external add-ons. First, on an iPad, you can use the HyperDrive to store data. Second, a good pair of headphones will enhance your sound experience whether it is on a tablet, laptop, or Mac. Third, a separate keyboard is also a good idea. Lastly, using a clamcase will protect your iPad. HyperDrive
Headphones
Keyboard
Clamcase

Here’s what you need to make it happen.

   Solution #1

Lots of bandwidth. 3G is ok but 4G is better, and stay in one spot or you will lose your live streaming capability when your mobile device changes towers. If WiFi is available, use that instead of cellular.

   Solution #2

To stream from your mobile device, you need an app like Ustream, Justin.tv, or Qik. Let’s take a look at how you can make your videos even more interesting. Solution #1

When recording video, you’ll capture more footage than you need so you can use simple editing tools on your mobile device to trim the fat. VidTrim Pro on Android is an easy-to-use editing tool. Similarly, on iOS you can do simple editing with the video viewer. For more advanced capabilities, download iMovie to add titles, music, and voiceover.

  VidTrim Pro
iMovie

Solution #2

A tripod is the key to shooting steady video. The flexibility of the Gorilla Mobile tripod allows you to get the video you need from any angle.

  Gorilla Mobile

Solution #3

If you don’t have a tripod, brace yourself and, more importantly, your mobile device because a steady shot is still crucial. The lens just clips over the corner of the iPhone. Another option is the iPro Lens System comes with lenses in a case that can act as a tripod mount. For Android phones, the Easy Macro Cell Lens Band is a rubber band with a macro lens attached.

   Olloclip
  iPro Lens System
  Easy Macro Cell Lens Band

Solution #2

When more light is needed to take a picture, do not use the flash on your mobile device if you are within three feet. Instead, a friend can use their mobile device to light up your subject. You can use the LED Light Widget on Android, the LED Light for iPhone 4 on iOS, or Flash-Light for phones OTHER than the iPhone 4 or 4S.

   LED Light (iOS)
Flash-Light (iOS)

Solution #3

Be creative, think outside the straight and narrow.
How can your devices stay charged to keep up with your on-to-go lifestyle? We’ll look at three solution to charging your mobile devices.

Solution #1

The Powerbag, made by Ful, can charge itself as well as your devices. You can choose the messenger style, a backpack, or a briefcase. Cables are included.

Solution #2

A small portable battery is an alternative. The Just Mobile Gum Max has enough to charge your devices till you get home. Just plug a USB cable into the battery and the other end into your device (mini or micro USB or proprietary connection).

Take a step further and that portable battery can be integrated into your phone case, like the Mophie JuicePack, Incipio and the ProVolt 4. Of course, the cases are a little thicker and heavier than normal, and remember, they will not charge other devices... just the phone it was made for.

Gum Max portable battery
Incipio Case
ProVolt 4

Solution #3
Besides your gadgets, you can use MenuMeters on a Mac or (if on a PC) All CPU Meter from Addgadget.com to monitor the applications that are hogging the CPU on your machine.

For mobile devices, a good housekeeping rule is to turn off apps you’re not using.
MenuMeters
ALL CPU Meter/Network Meter/Battery Meter

Travel can be a hassle, but it doesn’t have to be! At the very least, we can help you lessen the stress by using mobile apps to help you get through the process quicker and easier.

Solution #1
Flight Track gives you all the gate information you need as well as important notes like flight delays and actual departure/arrival times. With this app, you can even see a real time map of where the plane is! So whether you’re on the plane with a WiFi connection, or on the ground waiting for your loved one to land, you know exactly where it is.
Flight Track on iOS
Flight Track on Android

Solution #2
If you’re a loyal passenger to one airline or another, be sure to download that airline’s app. Most of the major players have them, and you’ll feel like you have a complete travel experience when you can book your reservations, check the status, change your seat, and get a mobile boarding pass...all in one place!

American Airlines on iOS
American Airlines on Android
United on iOS
United on Android
Delta on iOS
Delta on Android
Continental on iOS
Continental on Android
Southwest Air on iOS
Southwest Air on Android

Solution #3
TripIt is a great solution for not just flight information, but for ALL your travel plans!

Life is fast these days. We want to be everywhere at once. To get more done. And get it done faster! But we can’t stay in one place. We have things to do and places to be! So the question is...how?

Solution #1

Why not get a portable keyboard for your mobile device so you can type faster and get through more emails?

The Zaggmate is a hard case for the iPad, and the Zaggfolio is perfect for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab . Or, you can go the leather route with a detachable keyboard if you buy the Dexim case .

Solution #2

Voice to Text is a great way to get more done! Speak and let your device transcribe what you say into text to SMS or email someone. The technology isn’t perfect yet, but there are certain things you can do successfully with it.

FlexT9 on Android

Solution #3

Or, you could have your mobile device read your texts, email or news feeds out loud to you to make you a safer driver. Text to voice technology, again, isn’t perfect yet. Use Siri on your iPhone 4S, or try this:

Speak It! on iOS
