The battery stores a charge so the vehicle has enough power to expend the couple hundred amps that may be needed to start the car and still have power left over for the computer and ignition systems. Overvolt situations can boil a battery, and undervolt situations will cause a battery to drain because it won't get sufficient charge. This section of the car is like the others -- there are no unimportant parts!
