On the same night I was checking out the Classic I saw a guy at the back of the place with a scruffy beard and a flannel shirt. I thought he was in the wrong place as the indie rock show was downstairs. It turns out he was in the exact right place, he's Matt Schwartz, the hip hop star that only looks like an indie hipster. When he was on stage performing I realized, what Matt Schwartz has done has put all pretense aside, so the focus is on the vibe and the sound. Here's a short video from the night. I'll be interviewing Matt soon to see what makes him tick.

One of my New Years Resolutions was to put more MPAV videos up this year, as I always get a lot of good footage at the shows I go to. To kick off 2011 one of Detroit best new hip hop acts the Classic perform "I Feel F*#!ing Face" (careful on this one as the song title suggests!) from their recently realesed 2nd album which you can download for free if you sign up at the Music Fanatic. Most People Are VJs is the place where I put extra video on from concerts and events I attend that don't make it on my other mixed media show Most People Are DJs. This vidcast is the band Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. whom seem to get more piblicity from their name than their amazing songs. The vocals between Dan Zott and Josh Epstein blend together in a wonderful way that makes me think they should be called Simon Garfunkel Jr. Jr. Dan and Josh are a duo like no other, as Dan has played in several bands including Manna and Quail, and Josh is the vocalist of the Silent Years. MPAV#3 "Deastro Does It "Girl Talk" style

Randy (aka singer/synth of Deastro) is still the same lovable goofball we saw last year, throwing out stuffed animals, wrapping himself in a Batman sheet and pogoing around the stage as if his feet were ablaze. What is markedly different is how complete the Deastro sound has become with his full band that captures the sparkly synths and adds texture to space with a new focus on Randy’s vocal. Deastro may be our hometown kid on his way to making it the big time, but he still has a firm grasp on his identity and appreciation for his upbringing. To be able to witness Deastro up close, I traded in sound quality for capturing the moment. Check out the video of Deastro playing “Girl Talk” –style as the crowd gets up on stage and dances ecstatically around him.

MPAV#2 - The Silent Years live 06-05-09

I’ve used words to describe a live show by The Silent Years as “blissful” and “exhilarating.” They have a way of bringing something to the stage that could be called “spiritual” for people like me, that question if we even have a soul to begin with. For tonight’s show they brought a cast of kids with them that sang, beat on drums and played guitar. They brought in cello to add to their violin and created lighting effects with lamps and Christmas bulbs. Check out their live performance of “On Our Way Home.”

MPAV#1 "Manna And Quail"

Manna and Quail have been hard at work re-crafting their sound for a new ep which packed with 7 beauty-laden songs is like a full length with the fat chopped off. Having Dan Zott for special keyboard effects and vocal harmonies was a welcome back to some of the best M&Q moments, as this was one of their finest performances yet.
