Mobile Move Minute 175 goes completely off the rails (see the movie and you'll know what we mean) as we race to the finish with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson and hottie Jordana Brewster. Can you believe this thing has turned into a chick flick? The action is all guy town, but the women love that Vin. What am I missing here? Except for old ladies, this movie fits the bill, with 5 full-on bags of Oh-Vinnie popcorn (even from Cindy) for this non-stop-makes-no-sense action flick. See it, and rent the first, Fast and Furios. Bye, y'all. Eh?

Mobile Movie Minute 174 cracks the code as Jake Gyllenhall is ultimately seduced by hottie Michelle Monaghan and stays back in time. Or not. What? You'll get it by the second time jump, but you won't get the sappy chick flick ending. Vera Farmiga is featureless but effective, and Jake is somewhat convincing. 3.4 bags of blow-the-train-up-again-and-again popcorn for this it-couldn't-happen-here-could-it flick.

The Lincoln Lawyer - or Studebaker, Anyone?

Mobile Movie Minute 173 cruises the streets in a Lincoln as the best business is always conducted from the back seat of a large car. True or what? Remember drive-in theatres? Wouldn't a Lincoln have been perfect? Yep - but not so much this overly predictable piece of Grisham-like telling of Michael Connelly's bestseller.

Read the book or see the movie. Don't do both. Btw, if you don't read the book, you should know that the mom was attacked by someone in the film. Guess who? The answer is in the book - not the movie. Good cast, Matthew McConaughey is fun but Marisa Tomei looks old and Ryan Phillippe is not believable. William H. Macy (what's the H. stand for anyway?) is terrific. 2.75 bags of where's-Perry-Mason-when-we-need-him popcorn.

Mobile Movie Minute 172 finds Staff Sergeant Aaron Eckhart seemingly winning the war in LA all by himself. Well, almost. He has a band of marine roustabouts that need him to survive, but that's it. And guts. He has a lot of guts. He's likely the bravest marine ever to grace the silver screen. John Wayne? We don't think so. 2.8 bags of very-heavy-alien-metal for this wait for the video game flick. I shouldn't be so harsh - we do get a good glimpse of yucky alien innards. And MIchelle Rodriguez. Who else?

Mobile Movie Minute 171 finds Liam Neeson lost on the streets of Berlin. Well, his memory is lost, sort of, but not his driving skills. That guy is a badass Bullitt. If you don't get the reference, rent Bullitt with Steve McQueen. Best car chase scene ever. Bar none. In fact, here it is: http://bit.ly/h4awBA . LIam, on the other hand, and his band of cronies, are Mission Impossible gone bad. But you won't find that out until well into the movie, and long after you question his driving abilities. 2.8 bags of who-am-I-really popcorn for this wannabe action flick that fails on many levels.

Barney's Version - or Finally, A Serious Movie

Mobile Movie Minute 169 looks deep into the soul of a tortured man. Why look so deep and why is he tortured? I dunno, and you can't ask Mordecai Richler - but he is tormented - and it's highly entertaining. And the movie even features Dustin Hoffman in (finally) a believable role. This is one good flick, so I don't expect it to appeal to many of our regular listeners. No really, the worse the movie, the higher our downloads. Go figure. 4.2 bags of they-almost-bought-all the-Golden-Globes-but-The-Social-Network-beat-them-to-it popcorn. See this film.

True Grit - or Give The Kid The Oscar!

Mobile Movie Minute 168 does a redo of John Wayne's classic True Grit. Wayne won an Oscar for his performance, but that is not happening here. Matt Damon is a joke and Jeff Bridges is so irritating I had to cover my ears whenever he opened his mouth. Hailee Steinfeld on the other hand is a joy to watch. 3.8 bags of remixed popcorn for this redo of a good ole cowboy yarn. No indians though, just cowboys. And no saloon, either.

Terrific film that somewhat explores crack addiction in American, and the underside of pro boxing, as dictated by a dysfuntional family intent on living off the efforts of the baby bother of seven wacko sisters, an older brother and of course, the control-freak mother. What a family. 4.6 bags of turnbuckle popcorn for this amazing effort. Oscars all around!

Oh, did I just give something away? Not likely, as who doesn't know the story of Swan Lake? And if you don't, it's told to you early in the flick by the ballet director, and then everything comes into focus. Sure. At least Natalie Portman knows how to act - she honed her craft in Star Wars, afterall. 4.0 bags of this-is-not-Psycho popcorn for this supposed thriller.

Unstoppable - or Serious Sake-Induced Review

Mobile Movie Minute 161 is just short of Unstoppable, but we try our best to put ourselves out of our misery with a good dose of sake before the film (which, in this case we needed) and a couple of shots afterwards.

We abandon the open road review routine and head inside the Iki Ghan Sushi and Sake Palace in North Toronto. Yes, that's what it's called, really. Right after his wildly boring role in The Taking Of Pelham 123, Denzel jumps back in the cab and proceeds to jump the shark train in this ridiculous special effects filled train bonanza. Ho hum. 3.4 bags of we-had-to-get-drunk-to-see-this-film popcorn. Thanks Denzel. Maybe next time. And who's Chris Pine anyway?

Shutter Island - or OMG Alfred Is Back!

Mobile Movie 148 has received mixed reviews from mainstream media, and it gets it from us as well. Three reviewers, three different takes on this thing, but two of us are wrong. It's terrific! If you like Hitchcock, melodramas, suspense, and psychotropic drugs, this thriller is for you. Terrific surprise ending, that you may not figure out. They tricked me - sort of! 3.6 bags (but it's more like 4.6, except my fellow reviewers seriously averaged us down) for this quality mix of Hitchcock and Scorsese. Also a good rental if your friends are weirded out.

Sherlock Holmes - or Sherlock The Way He Was Meant To Be

Mobile Movie Minute 145 travels back to Merry Old England and hangs out with Sherlock and Watson. Guy Ritchie creates a franchise that has many episodes to run. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are terrific together, Rachel is sexy and the story is engrossing. I like the steampunk stuff at the end. Really well told, particularly as Sherlock deduces. And that's his forte - the guy is smart! 4.2 bags of elementary-my-dear-Watson popcorn for this highly enjoyable flick.

The Road - or Depressing But True To The Book

Mobile Movie 139 takes everything you've ever seen in a disaster movie and adds a good helping of steroids. Nothing survives except a few ridiculous arks that look like a floatilla of tanks. And some animals, a few thousand Chinese labourers and a hand picked bevy of politicians and wealthy oil barons. Oh, and John Cusack, his ex-wife and two kids. Makes sense, eh? Woody, too bad you died so early in the flick. You're the only one who could act in this 3.3 bagger of wow-did-you-see-LA-destroyed? popcorn.

Mobile Movie Minute 134 brings back by popular demand (and he was the only one available), Laffin' Jesse from our Zombieland review. We've settled down quite a bit, and give 9 its serious due. Cute burlap robots, mean dog robots, and an evil machine brain that just will not die. Sounds great, eh? But here's the but - the story is repetitive. And loud - really loud. Worth seeing, but keep your expectations in check. 3.4 bags of there-couldn't-be-a-sequel-could-there? popcorn for this animated adventure.

And, apparently in the book his adventures in other times are covered. That would be good, but not here. Nope - he just flashes in and out of other times - naked! Mobile Movie Minute 123 tediously follows John Dillinger through the last year of his life, back in 1933. The last of the great bank robbers, along with Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd, this was one bad-assed dude. But the movie isn't. The history, acting (Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Billy Crudup) and characters are terrific, though. 3.3 bags of where-can-I-get-a-gun-like-that popcorn. There is a lot of shooting - I like that!

The Taking of Pelham 123 - or Ho Hum, Another Everyday Hostage Flick

Mobile Movie Minute 121 goes deep underground as Bad Boy John decides to remake a 1974 thriller. But this time it's not so exciting. It's somewhat tedious, 'cause we've seen it all before. Some hostage movies hold you, and others don't. This one doesn't, and the gratuitous violence of crashing police cars is not enough to wake you up. Oh well, but it's early enough in the Summer of '09 to hope for some real films over the next few weeks. 2.8 bags of watch-out-for-the-third-rail popcorn for this who-are-they-kidding summer flick.

Mobile Movie Minute 120 leaves us with ringing ears from all the Terminator shootin', banging and extreme explosions. Non-stop action, except when they attempt simplistic dialogue. Why bother, I say - just keep shootin'. John Connor, leader of the Rebel Alliance (well, the Resistance) lives to fight many more days, and many more T-800s, I imagine. 3.5 bags of shoot-before-you-see-the-reds-of-their-eyes popcorn. However, be warned. You have to be a Terminator fanboy to REALLY like this flick. I am, and I did. So there, Cindy!

Mobile Movie Minute 99 finds Dirty Harry retired and in an old folks village. Well, not quite. Cliint's a retired Ford assembly line worker, and he's not in a retirement home. But he's tough, he's kind, he's racist, he's mouthy and he's fun. Just the way you want him. 4.4 bags of are-you-feeling-lucky popcorn for this terrific Clint flick. A must see. The audience loved it.

Mobile Movie Minute 97 is the 2008 Xmas Eve special with our own Xmas Eve co-host. This flick is a Clark Gable swashbucklng adventure, but with a mouse and a rat. And the rat turns. And turns back. The mouse is amazing. I see a mountain of toys coming from this guy. Must see. 4.9 bags of there's-a-moral-here-somewhere popcorn for this wonderful film.

Action all the way. Story? No way. And what does the title mean, anway?

This week we get the gory details of murders in Hollywood and behind-the-scenes action from inside Hollywood. Hitch is unmistakable in his style, even that many years ago. Jane Wyman is beautiful. Marlene Dietrich is stunning and cunning. Both flicks are worth a popcorn evening.

Mobile Movie Miinute 86 follows Woody Allen down the path of a lovesick puppy. Ok, Woody's not in the flick, but he might as well be, as all of Scarlett, Rebecca, Javier and Penelope are Woody in character. Well done, very entertaining. But be warned, no nudity in the love scenes. You can see it with your mom and it'll be ok. 3.8 bags of baked-in-Barcelona popcorn for one of Woody's best since the '80's. This is not Annie Hall.

Mobile Movie Minute 84 takes Jules Verne to task and poorly retraces his hero's steps back to the center of it all. Yeah, Brendan's cute, but seriously, he doesn't really act now, does he? 3.5 bags of really-in-your-face popcorn for this summetime bummer. Unless its in 3D (which earns its bags) don't bother. Certainly don't rent it, unless you're home with a gaggle of 11 and 12 year old boys.
