At Mike’s suggestion, Michelle’s godparents who haven’t contacted her in years are invited to contact her. Mike explains how to insult a Scientologist. Michelle talks about seeing a psychic and a psychologist at the same time. Mike explains what he thinks the relationship between these two things may have been for Michelle. Mike quotes from the Gleanings from the Writings of Baha’u’llah on the subject of life on other planets. Mike and Michelle discuss and disagree about whether aliens have actually visited earth. Michelle thinks they have. Mike doesn’t think the current evidence bears it out. We’re the hillbillies and the scousers of the galaxy. We finally open a bottle of Trader Joe’s sparkling cranberry. Mike talks about Scripture on the Internet, including Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Muslim, and Bahai. We talk about the Christian guy in Afghanistan who was threatened with death by the government there, which leads to talk about the sex-slave trade in Turkey. Fortunately, our attitude on slavery has changed markedly from two centuries ago.

Mike and Michelle get mail! Thank you note from musician Simon Lawrence. We played his spoof song, Morrissey Minor, in episode 27. Simon’s next spoof is of Jamie Cullum, to be called Coffee Jazz. Michelle’s sister Maureen also chastised us for confusing the Netherlands and Holland. Mo also referenced Queen’s Day, which, Mike had learned from a veteran of Amsterdam’s Boom! theater, is a big partying day. Mike’s friend Sue also wrote us. Our bottle of Knudsen’s sparkling apple cider was sabotaged. Michelle talks about Indie 103 a lot while Mike fetches paper towels. Michelle brings up DC and Marvel Comics’ efforts to trademark the term super-hero, with the goal of preventing competing comic book companies from using the term. We think they’re full of it. Bob Saget is directing a parody called Farce of the Penguins. We segue into talking about Scientology and the South Park episode, Trapped in the Closet. Mike goes on about the McDonalds suit in England a couple of years ago. Mike breaks down how Scientology was explained the South Park episode. Thetans and such. Mike defends the right of Scientologists to believe what they want, and goes on express his firm belief in the individual investigation of spiritual truth. Mike also believes in the free marketplace of religious ideas, and that religions shouldn’t keep doctrinal secrets and charge people money to disclose them. Anyone who wants to read what Mike believes can go to the Baha’i Library website. Mike references the late science fiction writer Jerome Bixby, a contemporary of L. Ron Hubbard’s early in their careers, and the story of how the idea of starting a religion to make a lot of money came up. They actually had the same literary agent, Forrest J. Ackerman. It’s not on the PMN, however, Mike received permission from the artist to use it. We then play the three very brief clips from the South Park episode Trapped in the Closet, and we again do NOT find time during the episode to actually talk about. Mike screws up his cues - for the umpteenth time. Mike does the world’s worst Nixon impression. Mike talks about guild issues with producers - compensation for product placements in scripted television, distribution over the Internet, and the basic and pay cable agreement. Mike favors a single worldwide iTunes, with all content being available worldwide to everyone. Residuals bar in Studio City used to take any residual check in exchange for a drink. Michelle shows more love for Rainn Wilson and The Office. Michelle is math-phobic. Mike’s been milking the birthday desert coupon he got via e-mail from Coco’s. Mike and Michelle make fun of Mattt the waiter’s spelling of his name. Mike was loopy at the restaurant because he hadn’t eaten for 12-14 hours. We talk product placement in scripted television and cite the ridiculous example from Alias. We plug stuff too, and conclude we should ask Trader Joe’s for a sponsorship. Mike thought we’d get to another point related to actors and contracts, but we wound up putting it off for a future show. Mike teases Michelle for not reading the links Mike’s been putting in the show notes. Mike and Michelle trash the draconian user agreement contract issued to anyone who wants to post on The Envelope. Michelle used to write detailed analyses on the Gold Derby site before the LA Times bought it and rechristened it The Envelope. But no more. Michelle offers her Oscar congrats. Michelle broaches the issue of some people saying Brokeback Mountain did not win Best Picture because Academy members such as Ernest Borgnine and Tony Curtis refused to watch it. Mike and Michelle explain their opinions on the issue. We point out that Brokeback has led to a slew of major gay-themed film projects getting greenlit, and Ang Lee got Best Director. We also agree that overall Crash was a better film.

We rave about Cliff and Augi’s staged reading of their sitcom pilot script in the Andy Dick Black Box at the ImprovOlympic Saturday night. We caught the rock & roll bands Tandemoro and Field Music at Spaceland, a small nightclub in Silverlake. Mike talks about the Beatles biography book he’s been reading. Mike theorizes that John’s and Paul’s girlfriends Cynthia and Dot conspired around 1961-2 to get pregnant at the same time to trap them into marriage. Dot miscarried, so only John got married. The book doesn’t speculate about this. Mike explains scouser to Michelle. Michelle’s First Amendment moment for the week involves a suspended Colorado high school teacher Jay Bennish. Michelle points out the conservative view is available any time from Fox News. Mike adds they can download Democracy Now! as a podcast. Michelle doesn’t like Adam Curry’s sound now that he’s using a Windows machine and Castblaster. A disproportionate percentage of our listeners - compared to the general population - are Mac users. Mike has no love for the iLife programs Garage Band 3 and iWeb. Michelle plugs her other podcast Whispered Pearls. Mike shares about his interview by students from Cal State San Bernardino’s Communications Department for a cable access show. We talk about Rainn Wilson’s interview on LA morning radio plugging an episode of his show The Office called Dwight’s Speech. Michelle believes Adam’s first music video feed was an historic event. Mike recommends the John and Elizabeth Edwards podcast, not for political reasons but because they get what podcasting is about. Michelle showers her praise on Nate and Di. She loved their audio work in church. Michelle waxes rhapsodic about the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, and likes the approach of the Podcast Hotel concept. She also sings the praises of MySpace. The band Killola has used MySpace very effectively as a marketing tool. Mike offers his opinion as to why music and audio drama is more valuable than a “talking heads” podcast. Michelle gets in her Indie plugs and we play a song off the PMN called I’m in the Grateful Dead, by the Vincent Van Go Go.
