In January of 2009, after two years of touring, East Hundred releases Passenger, their first full-length effort. The nine lushly produced tracks move through a haunting melodic landscape of loss, regret, and ultimately hope. If the young Philadelphia five-piece seems to wear its heart on its sleeve, it does so honestly.

        “We’re not the first band to write a breakup album, and we’re not the first band to have formed, in part, around a romantic relationship,” says Brooke Blair. “And maybe we’re not the first to write that breakup album as the relationship falls apart…but that still doesn’t mean it’s easy.”

        East Hundred began as a basement recording project in 2004 when brothers Brooke and Will Blair (guitars and drums, respectively) invited Beril Guceri, Brooke’s then-girlfriend, to add vocals to their heavily-synthed downtempo tracks.
“Of course there were hesitations, in working seriously and creatively with my boyfriend and his brother. Singing leaves you so vulnerable, but it was Brooke’s support that made it comfortable,” Guceri points out. Comfortable may be a relative term: Beril suffered from panic attacks and nearly cancelled their first few shows due to overwhelming stage fright.

        After recording a few rough demos (which would later become the first EPs), the band sought to solidify its lineup and it was no great surprise when David Sunderland joined on bass. A friend of the Blairs literally since diapers, Sunderland had played in several previous bands with the brothers. “Dave was our only choice.” Susan Gager, another close friend from Philadelphia, joined on keyboards and East Hundred soon evolved into a songwriting democracy. Nonstop performing honed the groups’ live act and Guceri overcame her crippling anxiety (perhaps too much so, if you catch her on one of her hammier nights.)

        As work began on Passenger in 2007 at Drexel University’s Mad Dragon studios, Brooke and Beril’s relationship ended. Rather than derail the recording process, however, the resultant heartache and awkwardness produced a flood of new material and what was intended to be a minor EP soon became a full-fledged album. Brian McTear (Mazarin, Matt Pond PA, mewithoutyou) came on to record the new songs at his Philly based Miner Street Studios. “We worked quickly with Brian partly because he didn’t allow us to second guess ourselves. Our first instincts were always encouraged, and we think that’s what these songs needed,” Will says. The cool reserve of their earlier work became something much more raw and immediate on Passenger, alternately sorrowful, angry, and sweet, at once accessible and dense. The final track, Afterlove, describes a parting in terms of bottomless melancholy…only to then double back on itself to finish in a place of unbridled optimism. After Passenger has pulled our heart (and theirs) through the wringer, this closer assures us that everything will be okay.

        East Hundred comes out of old friendships and failed loves. Their music shores up their relationships…or the relationships feed their music…more likely, it’s a bit of both. “As we began making music together, Brooke and I tried to visualize the future of the band, if our relationship failed,” Guceri recalls. “And the band was doing just fine.”

 Beyond the distinctive sounds, organicArma incorporates philosophical accents (from Nietzsche,nHuxley, Hegel, and Russell), linguistics and psychology (influence ninclude Jung, Fromm, and Hesse), and science.  The three members, named dhArma (drums), lhArma (keys, bass, samples), and phAxas (samples,npercussive MIDI, DJ), weave these principles throughout each track. organicArma takes its inspiration from minimal techno, techno, house,ndub, classical, industrial, and rock, and fuse logical fluent breaks, Afro-Latin beats, time signature changes, and unique sounds to create music that is uncategorizable. 
 
 For organicArma, there is no “one” lead singer. Since all three members are responsible for lyrics, all three members write collaboratively.  For organicArma, a message is more powerful when delivered by one who created it.  Each of the three band members is a jack of all trades:  economist, trader and drummer, publicist and sound engineer, music professor and fine art connoisseur. Each member’s background is important for presenting the group’s music and concept.
 
 "The name 'organicArma' is a reflection of our approach", says phAxas, identifying the connection. “The 'organic' is that which cannot be controlled.  Our music itself is our ‘arma’ or our ability to plan, build, and create within the constructs of what is unknown to man." lhArma adds, "organicArma can also be a way to express the brain - our organic tool.”  Or as dhArma puts it:  “It’s how a human being approaches everything that they cannot control.”
 
 organicArma’s message, she explains, is to encourage listeners to question reality and create a new one based on their imagination.  organicArma utilizes the concept of duality - to connect one's opposite and come up with allnthe possibilities in between, and, as dhArma says, “to encourage listeners to have their own interpretation of the art the band presents.”  organicArma’s influences are wide-ranging and comparisonsnbecome difficult because of organicArma’s unique creations.  One might point to Devo, Tricky or Talking Heads when contemplating the band’s intellectual or visual aspects, while others might compare them to Pink Floyd or Kraftwerk purely on the “concept” level.
 
 organicArma is based out of Miami’s Wynwood Art District, as is their label Acustronic, a concept label committed to originating, representing, and transmitting integral messages based on principles of philosophy, duality, risk, trust, and mind awareness.  Acustronic’s “Awarehouse” is headquarters, studio, and home for organicArma; a live music venue; Luis Perez Galeria; and a sculpture garden.  The band has performed at such prestigious locations as The Louvre, Casino Nouveou (Paris), Maxims (Paris), BMI Latin Alternative Showcase (NYC), ART Basel 2006,nand the Winter Music Conference in Miami in 2008.

The album broke into the Billboard Top 200 and helped to establish the band outside of its West Coast confines. A Skylit Drive kept busy throughout the year, touring with similar-minded outfits like Chiodos, Greeley Estates, August Burns Red, and Sky Eats Airplane, as well as releasing the live DVD Let Go of the Wires. In 2009 the band released its sophomore effort, Adelphia, on Fearless Records.

After making his introduction as a sensitive, acoustic-styled songwriter on 2001/'s Room for Squares, John Mayer steadily widened his approach over the subsequent years, encompassing everything from blues-rock to adult contemporary in the process. Arriving during the tail end of teen pop/'s heyday, he crafted pop music for a more discerning audience, spiking his songcraft with jazz chords and literate turns of phrase. The combination proved to be quite popular, as Room for Squares went triple platinum before its follow-up release, Heavier Things, arrived in September 2003. Mayer continued to retool his sound with each album, however, moving beyond the material that had launched his career and adopting elements of rock, blues, and soul. Moreover, he partnered with legends of several genres, making guest appearances on albums by Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, and B.B. King, while touring alongside jazz icon Herbie Hancock. Mayer also retained enough pop/rock foundation to continue his reign of the charts, making him one of the decade/'s most popular songwriters.

Born in Bridgeport, CT, and raised in the nearby town of Fairfield, Mayer began playing blues as a teenager. By 1997, his skill on the electric guitar was enough to warrant admission into the Berklee College of Music, although Mayer dropped out after two semesters to pursue a songwriting career in Atlanta. Working alongside former classmate Clay Cook, he frequented the local coffeehouse circuit and began co-writing material that melded palatable pop/rock with unexpected flourishes. Cook and Mayer parted ways shortly thereafter, however, with Cook joining the Marshall Tucker Band/'s touring lineup for several years. Now a solo artist by default, Mayer recorded several of the duo/'s songs, packaged them alongside a handful of his own compositions, and self-released the EP in 1999 under the title Inside Wants Out.

Mayer secured a deal with Aware Records in early 2000, and recording sessions for his debut album commenced later that year with producer John Alagia, renowned for his work with Dave Matthews and Ben Folds Five. Although Inside Wants Out had been a decidedly acoustic effort, Room for Squares proved to be a more expansive affair, with several of Mayer/'s old songs receiving new, radio-ready arrangements. Released in 2001 by both Aware and Columbia Records, the album quickly launched Mayer/'s career, with /"No Such Thing/" and /"Your Body Is a Wonderland/" both becoming Top 20 hits.

As Mayer hit the road in support of the album, his considerable talent as a lead guitarist (a skill that had been downplayed during Room for Squares) flourished, leading him to showcase several blues-influenced solos on his 2003 live album, Any Given Thursday. That same year, Mayer won his first Grammy Award for /"Your Body Is a Wonderland./" He returned to the Grammy ceremony two years later, this time to accept a pair of awards for /"Daughters,/" a soulful ballad from his lucrative sophomore release, Heavier Things. Commercial and critical success notwithstanding, Mayer/'s interest in other genres convinced him to take a brief break from pop music, and he tested his instrumental chops by collaborating with blues artists (Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Eric Clapton) and jazz legends (John Scofield, Herbie Hancock). He also assembled the John Mayer Trio, whose bluesy rock & roll was displayed on the band/'s first and only release, Try!

Mayer returned to his solo career with 2006/'s Continuum, a warmly received album that saw him focusing on blues, pop, and contemporary soul. /"Gravity/" found modest success as a single, but /"Waiting on the World to Change/" proved to be the album/'s commercial highlight, cracking the Top 20 in February 2007 and winning a Grammy that same month. Later that year, Mayer achieved his highest-charting single to date with /"Say,/" a song from the Rob Reiner film The Bucket List. After /"Say/" peaked at number 12, the song was included in a reissued version of Continuum, and it took home yet another Grammy Award (along with /"Gravity/") in early 2009. Following the release of a live album, Where the Light Is, Mayer once again returned to the studio in 2009, this time to record Battle Studies.

There’s a void on rock radio, and it’s downright criminal. Not since the heyday of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and 38 Special has southern rock truly owned the airwaves. Sure, there were breakthroughs here and there by the likes of Jackyl, the Black Crowes and Sister Hazel, but in this age of prefabrication, honest, heartfelt, whiskey-soaked rock ‘n’ roll has been relegated to regional entertainment. That’s primed to change in a big way with the rise of Blackberry Smoke, an Atlanta four-piece armed with the chops and cred to lead the new breed. With sophomore full-length A Little Piece of Dixie (Big Karma / Adrenaline) blending bluegrass, boogie, country and hard rock sensibilities, BBS flaunt not only a potent arsenal, but the blessing of their influential forefathers.

The 11-song platter is the byproduct of years of hard work and sacrifice. Frontman Charlie Starr and sibling rhythm section Richard and Brit Turner (bass and drums, respectively) had been trying to find the perfect second guitarist since the turn of the millennium when they finally hooked up with Paul Jackson. The young band was just getting their live legs when Jackyl mastermind Jesse James Dupree took BBS under his wing, inviting them on tour. (“You can’t put a price on that,” the grateful Starr notes of the increased exposure.) The quartet further honed their craft on self-released 2004 full-length Bad Luck Ain’t No Crime (produced by Dupree) and revelatory country-centric stopgap EP New Honky Tonk Bootlegs before settling in with acclaimed producer Dann Huff (Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban) to concoct A Little Piece of Dixie. “He’s impressive in every aspect,” Starr says. “Such a great musician and producer, with great ideas and great ears, and he has such a love for music. If we were arguing with one another, he would always help us find a middle ground.”

Due out in June, A Little Piece of Dixie is already spawning hits—the hard-driving, layered riffing of “Up in Smoke” popped up in EA Sports’ NASCAR 08 (Starr’s son looped it to the point of nearly driving his father crazy), and anthemic first single “Good One Comin’ On” featured prominently in the Kevin Costner political comedy Swing Vote. The rest of the record oozes addictive melodies and hooks, not to mention multiple shots of Starr’s trademark dry wit. When he sings about getting to the “bottom of this” in the song of the same name, he means a bottle just as much as his problems. But Dixie isn’t exclusively fun and games; Starr’s just as passionate describing the rigors of being away from family on the road in the poignant “Say a Prayer for the Lil Man,” co-written by Grammy-winner Craig Wiseman (Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw).

Blackberry Smoke are a versatile bunch all right, but they’re humble to boot. “For so many people in our generation, [southern rock] has been the soundtrack of our lives, so it really doesn’t need to be force-fed to anybody.” Starr observes. “What about the Stones and Zeppelin—they played blues and they could turn around and play really funky stuff, or they could play a country song. And they were British, for crying out loud.”

While listeners enjoy the tunes regardless of categorization, the band enjoys making prestigious friends criss-crossing the country—check out the MySpace pics of BBS hanging, and often playing, with heavyweights like Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Slash and Kid Rock—and opening for heroes like outlaw country icon David Allan Coe.

On August 11 of 2009, Dan Mangan released his sophomore album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice in Canada. And it’s about time. After three and a half years of touring his sleeper-hit debut, Postcards and Daydreaming , Dan is ready and eager to unveil a collection of lyrical ruminations that showcase his growth as a songwriter.

The album immediately shot to #1 on the iTunes Canada Singer/Songwriter Album chart, and #7 at ‘Earshot!’ College/Co-Op radio (#1 roots category). Rave reviews came from heavy hitting national music-mags such as Exclaim!, CHARTattack and Metro as well as dozens of blogs and local print media. After two sold out CD Release shows at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, Mangan looks forward to bringing his four-piece and new material across Canada in October and throughout Europe in November December ‘09. Dropping in to add their talents were such hero Canadian artists as Justin Rutledge, Veda Hille, Mark Berube, Hannah Georgas and members of Elliott Brood, Said The Whale, Mother Mother, The Hidden Cameras, Major Maker and Small Sins.

There is a raw rootsiness to Nice, Nice, Very Nice that touches on aspects of indie-pop. There are a number of toe-tappers amid his trademark lamentations and, though it’s mellow at times, what Mangan has to offer isn’t overly precious or delicate. He simply writes songs that evoke the wonder and the absurdity in what we do.

Mangan has toured Canada, the UK, USA and Australia numerous times. He’s played coffee shops to six people and festival stages to many more. He has showcased at Canadian Music Week, South-By-South-West, North-By-North-East, The Great Escape (UK), MusExpo (LA), Big Sound (AUS), Western Canadian Music Awards, Transmission and COCA. Whether alone or with his Vancouver-based band, Dan continues to work all the time.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead were formed in late 1994 by singers/guitarists/drummers Jason Reece and Conrad Keely, longtime friends who originally met in Hawaii before settling in the perennial indie hotbed of Olympia, WA (where Reece fronted the notorious Mukilteo Fairies). Upon relocating together to Austin, TX, the duo played their first shows as /"You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead,/" eventually adding both the conjunction and the ellipsis to the band/'s name. They also recruited guitarist Kevin Allen and bassist/sampler Neil Busch, thus transforming the group from an indie two-piece into an arty quartet. After issuing a live cassette on the local Golden Hour label, AYWKUBTTOD -- already legendary in indie circles for their anarchic concert sets -- released their self-titled full-length debut on Trance Syndicate in early 1998. Following the label/'s collapse, the band moved to Merge/'s roster and issued Madonna in the fall of 1999. After signing yet another record deal with Interscope, they issued the formidable Source Tags & Codes in 2002, followed by The Secret of Elena/'s Tomb EP in 2003. Worlds Apart, a prog rock-inspired epic, arrived early in 2005. Despite widespread acclaim for the album, its sales were disappointing, leading Keely to consider disbanding the group. However, he and the rest of AYWKUBTTOD found inspiration in their frustration and bounced back with So Divided -- initially conceived as an EP, but gradually expanded into a full-length effort -- in late 2006. Their subsequent departure from Interscope Records convinced the musicians to launch their own label, Richter Scale Records, in partnership with the Texas-based Justice Records. Free of the constraints of conventional label deals, the band then brewed up a batch of contemporary prog anthems and released an EP, 2008/'s Festival Thyme, to ramp up support for a full-length album. The Century of Self followed in early 2009.

It/'s the week before Halloween, and MeVIO Music is gonna show you guys some scary and horror themed videos. We start off today with the father of horror rock, Alice Cooper, with No More Mr. Nice Guy.

Originally,/nthere was a band called Alice Cooper led by a singer named Vincent/nDamon Furnier. Under his direction, Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly/ntheatrical and violent brand of heavy metal that was designed to shock./nDrawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, heavy metal, and garage/nrock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs,/nguillotines, fake blood, and huge boa constrictors, all coordinated by/nthe heavily made-up Furnier. By that time, Furnier had adopted the name/nfor his androgynous on-stage personality. While the visuals were/nextremely important to the group/'s impact, the band/'s music was nearly/nas distinctive. Driven by raw, simple riffs and melodies that derived/nfrom /'60s guitar pop as well as show tunes, it was rock & roll at/nits most basic and catchy, even when the band ventured into psychedelia/nand art rock. After the original group broke up and Furnier began a/nsolo career as Alice Cooper, his actual music lost most of its/ntheatrical flourishes, becoming straightforward heavy metal, yet his/nstage show retained all of the trademark props that made him the king/nof shock rock.

Furnier formed his first group, the/nEarwigs, as an Arizona teenager in the early /'60s. Changing the band/'s/nname to the Spiders in 1965, the group was eventually called the Nazz/n(not to be confused with Todd Rundgren/'s band of the same name). The/nSpiders and the Nazz both released local singles that were moderately/npopular. In 1968, after discovering there was another band called with/nthe same name, the group changed its name to Alice Cooper. According to/nband legend, the name came to Furnier during a ouija board session,/nwhere he was told he was the reincarnation of a 17th century witch of/nthe same name. Comprised of vocalist Furnier -- who would soon begin/ncalling himself Alice Cooper -- guitarist Mike Bruce, guitarist Glen/nBuxton, bassist Dennis Dunaway, and drummer Neal Smith, the group moved/nto California in 1968. In California, the group met Shep Gordon, who/nbecame their manager, and Frank Zappa, who signed Alice Cooper to his/nStraight Records imprint.

Alice Cooper released their/nfirst album, Pretties for You, in 1969. Easy Action followed early in/n1970, yet it failed to chart. The group/'s reputation in Los Angeles was/nslowly shrinking, so the band moved to Furnier/'s hometown of Detroit./nFor the next year, the group refined their bizarre stage show. Late in/n1970, the group/'s contract was transferred to Straight/'s distributor/nWarner Bros., and they began recording their third album with producer/nBob Ezrin. With Ezrin/'s assistance, Alice Cooper developed their/nclassic heavy metal crunch on 1971/'s Love It to Death, which featured/nthe number 21 hit single /"Eighteen/"; the album peaked at number 35 and/nwent gold. The success enabled the group to develop a more impressive,/nelaborate live show, which made them highly popular concert attractions/nacross the U.S. and eventually the U.K. Killer, released late in 1971,/nwas another gold album. 

Released in the summer of 1972,/nSchool/'s Out was Alice Cooper/'s breakthrough record, peaking at number/ntwo and selling over a million copies. The title song became a Top Ten/nhit in the U.S. and a number one single in the U.K. Billion Dollar/nBabies, released the following year, was the group/'s biggest hit,/nreaching number one in both America and Britain; the album/'s first/nsingle, /"No More Mr. Nice Guy,/" became a Top Ten hit in Britain,/npeaking at number 25 in the U.S. Muscle of Love appeared late in 1973,/nyet it failed to capitalize on the success of Billion Dollar Babies./nAfter Muscle of Love, Furnier and the rest of Alice Cooper parted ways/nto pursue other projects. Having officially changed his name to Alice/nCooper, Furnier embarked on a similarly theatrical solo career; the/nrest of the band released one unsuccessful album under the name Billion/nDollar Babies, while Mike Bruce and Neal Smith both recorded solo/nalbums that were never issued. In the fall of 1974, a compilation of/nAlice Cooper/'s five Warner albums, entitled Alice Cooper/'s Greatest/nHits, became a Top Ten hit. 

For his first solo album,/nCooper hired Lou Reed/'s backing band from Rock /'N/' Roll Animal --/nguitarists Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter, bassist Prakash John,/nkeyboardist Joseph Chrowski, and drummer Penti Glan -- as his/nsupporting group. Welcome to My Nightmare, Alice Cooper/'s first solo/nalbum, was released in the spring of 1975. The record wasn/'t a great/ndeparture from his previous work, and it became a Top Ten hit in/nAmerica, launching the hit acoustic ballad /"Only Women Bleed/"; its/nsuccess put an end to any idea of reconvening Alice Cooper the band./nIts follow-up, 1976/'s Alice Cooper Goes to Hell, was another hit, going/ngold in the U.S. After Alice Cooper Goes to Hell, Cooper/'s career began/nto slip, partially due to changing trends and partially due to his/nalcoholism. Constrictor, released in 1986, began his/ncomeback, but it was 1989/'s Trash that returned Cooper to the/nspotlight. Produced by the proven hitmaker Desmond Child, Trash/nfeatured guest appearances by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and most of/nAerosmith; the record became a Top Ten hit in Britain and peaked at/nnumber 20 in the U.S., going platinum. /"Poison,/" a midtempo rocker/nfeatured on the album, became Cooper/'s first Top Ten single since 1977./nAfter the release of Trash, he continued to star in the occasional/nfilm, tour, and record, although he wasn/'t able to retain the audience/nrecaptured with Trash. Still, 1991/'s Hey Stoopid and 1994/'s The Last/nTemptation were generally solid, professional efforts that helped/nCooper settle into a comfortable cult status without damaging the/ncritical goodwill surrounding his /'70s output. After a live album,/n1997/'s Fistful of Alice, Cooper returned on the smaller Spitfire label/nin 2000 with Brutal Planet and Dragontown a year later. The Eyes of/nAlice Cooper appeared in 2003 and found Alice and company playing a/nmore stripped-down brand of near-garage rock. Dirty Diamonds from 2005/nwas nearly as raw and hit the streets around the same time Alice/npremiered his syndicated radio show, Nights with Alice Cooper. The seeds for Danish psychobilly sextet, the HorrorPops, were sewn in 1996 during a gig that found bassist/lead singer Patricia Day/'s indie-punk collective Peanut Pump Gun opening for guitarist Kim Nekroman/'s band Nekromantix at POPKOM in Cologne, Germany. The two found that they shared a wealth of mutual interests, both musical and personal, and in an attempt to step outside of their respective genres decided to swap instruments and start a band. The addition of drummer Niedermeier, and second guitarist Caz the Clash, both formerly of (Strawberry Slaughterhouse), rounded out the newly dubbed HorrorPops. In 1998, the band began to play out, attracting audiences with their energetic stage shows that featured go-go girls Mille and Kamilla -- co-workers at a piercing shop with Day -- and headed into the studio to record demos for a press kit. 2000-2002 saw the group touring and building up a loyal following, eventually signing with Hellcat records. In 2003, Caz the Clash left, and was replaced by K/'aarrghh/'sten (aka Karsten), also a former member of Strawberry Slaughterhouse, and the group saw the release of a vinyl single containing /"Ghouls/" and /"Psychobitches Outta Hell./" The full-length Hell Yeah was released in April 2004 on the legendary punk label Epitaph. Both Mille and Karsten departed during the extensive touring for Hell Yeah, but HorrorPops didn/'t slow down. Geoff Kresge gave up playing standup bass in Tiger Army to join the Pops on guitar, and band pal Naomi (renamed No-No) took Mille/'s open dancer spot. In 2005 HorrorPops managed some Warped Tour gigs even as they recorded an album; Bring it On, their second effort for Epitaph, appeared in September of that year, followed by Kiss Kiss Kill Kill in early 2008, an album for which the band returned to its original three-piece line-up.

It/'s Monday again, and time for another round of music video critiques. Christina isn/'t here this week, so Jackie and Martina are flying solo. This week they take a look at an older video from Semi Precious Weapons, and then they take a look at the new video from Taylor Swift.

Semi Precious Weapons is the creation of Chicago born gay/ambisexual singer/songwriter Justin Tranter, a charismatic frontperson with a long history of outrageous performances. Tranter fell under the spell of Ariel in Disney/'s The Little Mermaid when he was a boy, and after seeing Courtney Love and Hole perform, his course was firmly set. He wanted to be a rock star. Realizing he wanted to write songs, as well as sing them, he begged his parents to get him a piano and taught himself to play. He went to a music and arts high school where he studied classical and pop piano, before moving on to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Being a practical man, he studied the business side of the music business, as well as songwriting when he was at Berklee. While getting his degree he founded Musicians With a Mission, a scholarship fund for GLBT youth education. He also put out his first solo album, Scratched, a piano based album that turned the conventions of pop songwriting inside out with its dramatic flair.

After graduation he moved to New York and put together his first band. They were going to be the house band for an off Broadway play called Rockstars NYC, but the show only ran for three weeks. Still, Tranter/'s over the top performances started a buzz. His second album, Tear Me Together was meant to push emotional buttons with depictions of the extremes of love and hate, life and death. The album cover art featured Tranter/'s /"dead/" body being dragged out of a bathroom and people either loved it or hated it. But Tranter knew the value of a good visual, and the record/'s notoriety help increase his underground profile.

Tranter finally decided he wanted a full-tilt rock band. Bassist Cole Whittle, his college roommate knew drummer Dan Crean,and the producer of Tear Me Together introduced them to guitarist Aaron Lee Tasjan. The minute they played together something clicked and they all had the same ideas about rock/'s power to outrage people. The band/'s sound borrows from glam, garage, punk, and new wave funk, but it/'s distilled into their own high-octane Molotov cocktail. After their first gigs in 2004 they landed a high profile manager, former Marc Bolan/T. Rex publicist B.P. Fallon. He brought Tony Visconti, legendary for his work with David Bowie, to a gig and he offered to help produce an album for the band. We Love You was originally released on their own label, Precious Records, and was produced by the band with the aid of Mario McNulty (T. Rex, Laurie Anderson) and Visconti. The album was financed by Tranter/'s booming jewelry business. (Urban Outfitters and Hot Topic have moved over 100,000 necklaces designed by Tranter featuring the band/'s guns and heart logo. He also designs high-end gold and diamond skulls for Barney/'s.) The first video, for /"Magnetic Baby,/" showed Tranter making out with girls, which upset some of his longtime gay fans, proving his point that rock can still outrage people if it/'s done right. We Love You brought offers from many major labels, but the band ignored them in favor of Razor and Tie, who will allow them to continue to chart their own decadent path. The album was released nationally in September of 2008.

Taylor Swift became one of country-pop/'s brightest (and youngest) faces in 2006, when the 16-year-old vocalist released her first album. Although new to the American public, Swift had been performing since early childhood, taking inspiration and encouragement from her opera-singing grandmother. She sang /"The Star-Spangled Banner/" before a Philadelphia 76ers game at the age of 11; the following year, she began practicing her guitar skills for several hours each day, only stopping when her fingers began to bleed. Swift/'s parents realized their child/'s dedication and began making regular visits to Nashville, TN, where Swift would perform casually and meet with songwriters in the area. The family then decided to move from their native Pennsylvania to an outlying Nashville suburb, which accelerated Swift/'s career.

While performing at the intimate Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Swift caught the eye of music industry veteran Scott Borchetta, who signed her to his newly formed label. Swift joined the roster at Big Machine Records and released her debut single, /"Tim McGraw,/" in August 2006. The song drew upon her experience as a lovelorn high-school student, a theme that Swift revisited throughout her self-titled debut album. Graham Isaacson is not your typical singer-songwriter. This Portland, Maine native conjures memories of a young Johnny Cash or Tom Waits, yet with a lyrical eloquence all his own. Poignant, honest and touching are words that might describe Isaacson’s approach to songwriting and lyric crafting. With lines such as “In your endless eyes… A man can find his way”, Isaacson offers delicate words that complement his gravelly delivery.

The Primer EP takes a contrarian approach to the polished, radio-ready sounds of most contemporary singer-songwriter records. The recordings that make up the EP were in fact made over the course of several years in a variety of environments including late night, whiskey-fueled jam sessions with friends such as Ray LaMontagne. Ray himself proclaims Isaacson’s songwriting “is something pure and true. It explores the hopeful, dark and mystical way of love.”

One thing is for sure, Graham Isaacson cannot be mistaken for any other artist. The timeless sounds of The Primer EP will no doubt appeal to fans of classic artists such as Leonard Cohen, but will invite a future generation of folk-lovers to discover what inspired the genre to begin with.

Thanks to everyone for making it on time. Looks like we’re all here; can we get started?
Our first item is a band called Meeting of Important People. An indie-rock-pop band from Pittsburgh, with a new debut record out nationally on the Authentik label. A self-titled collection of tunes about how it’s sometimes just as spooky in the suburbs as it is in the city. You follow? The band has been charting on the indie Itunes charts, and they/'ve just released a music video with a crazy cardboard city concept.
Play them the sample. Well? Haunting melodies over garage pop, mod-folk, even some dancy punk. They put out a single, “Mothers Pay More,” on a recent national Key Party sampler, and a lot of blogs and publications took note. The loud parts are loud, and the pretty parts pretty. You can stop the tape.
We hear that the band started as The You in 2006, and recorded an unreleased LP with producer Brian Deck—of Modest Mouse and Iron & Wine fame-- for a subsidiary of Sony/Epic. That one went shelved amid the usual label stuff. A 5% bonus to any of you that find a copy.
They’ve shared the stage with other artists you know of-- The Secret Machines, Blonde Redhead, Sam Roberts Band, many others. Pass me that water jug, would you? Look at the chart: a few of their songs have received heavy airplay on XFM and terrestrial radio and have been placed into films and television, even without having a full record out until now.
We’ve got a few clippings here, too. Page five; blogs like the Devil Has The Best Tuna say that “MOIP crafts their songs from the purest honeycomb” while MP3Hugger claims that “the band will soon be breaking all the right hearts.” Right.
And their live shows are full of guitar-punching and high-energy playing, the usual cutesy stuff: Here, The Pitt News writes that MOIP gigs are “a distinct blend of garage and folk pop that translates to an explosive show on-stage.” Hmm.
I’ve got a copy of their self-titled debut album here…you will no doubt find it to be a unique collection of tunes that will get the young folks excited: songs about escaping from work early, punks visiting the local cemetery, waiting for your pals in the woods to do illict things, and so forth. Lots of characters in these that I just don’t understand.
They’re getting attention from international press and are beginning to announce a series of dates through late Summer and Fall. I think you all know how I feel about this.

Indie pop/rock prodigies from the Pacific Northwest who appear to have been ingesting everything from Queen and 10cc to Weezer and the Strokes since they were old enough to take solid food, the Lonely H (not to be confused with Chicago/'s two-man grunge juggernaut Local H) consist of five young men born in the late /'80s in the Olympic Peninsula community of Port Angeles, WA. Boasting songwriting smarts and instrumental skill far beyond their tender years, Mark Fredson (vocals and keyboards), Colin Field (guitar), Eric Whitman (guitar), Johnny Whitman (bass), and Ben Eyestone (drums) were still in high school when they started writing songs and playing out, and in 2004 they came in second place in a competition for young bands at Seattle/'s Experience Music Project, winning the group some gear and studio time. Word of the Lonely H/'s energetic live shows and sharp songwriting caught the attention of the Seattle-based independent label the Control Group, and in 2006 they released the band/'s debut album, Kick Upstairs. The album won rave reviews from the local and national music press, and by the end of the year the group was already hard at work on its second LP. While the novelty of the Lonely H/'s youth certainly had a lot to do with their buzz among fans, it/'s also not without its drawbacks; when the Seattle-based magazine The Stranger asked Johnny Whitman what he/'d like for Christmas 2005, he replied, /"Fake IDs for the whole band so we can hang in the club and not have to wait outside and freeze our asses off before we play 21+ places./" By 2009/'s Concrete Class, the band had taken a decidedly more country rock direction, although the garage elements still remained high in the equation.

Summer is no myth. It exists year round on Holiday Shores Ct, a two-block stretch on the Florida panhandle where twenty-one year old Nathan Pemberton grew up. It’s no more than five minutes from white sand beaches, squawks of seagulls, and wafting smells of suntan lotion.

Columbus’d The Whim is the first first full-length album from Pemberton’s Holiday Shores, who, like the street that bears their name, are quintessentially summer: chimey guitars, reverb-soaked vocals, warbling Rhodes, echoes of years past.
Pemberton started playing the piano at age seven and learned the guitar shortly after. He began finding his musical footing in high school bands, playing with his brother, friends, and eventually his college roommates.

The album, packed with 10 could-be singles, reads like a book of Pemberton’s well-written memories. Each word chosen meaningfully with a linguist’s touch; each sentence constructed carefully with an artist’s ear. Columbus’d The Whim is a literary work in addition to a sonic one.

The current line up, comprised of friends and roommates spent months recording together in Pemberton’s living room obsessing over vintage gear and perfecting their captivating hooks, heart-warming melodies, and creating a haunting tunnel of sound as a stunning backdrop.

Indeed,/nthe title says it all: This 12-song collection of stirring originals/nand smart covers is an eye-opener to a fresh, young talent who displays/na singular, deep-brewed voice and possesses an uncanny sensibility to/nstraddle the fine line between jazz and pop. Vasandani is in the/ncompany of his established trio (performing together since 2001)/ncomprised of pianist Jeb Patton, bassist David Wong and drummer Quincy/nDavis. Guests on the CD include vibraphonist Stefon Harris, trumpeter/nMarcus Printup and guitarist Doug Wamble. The album is produced by/nesteemed bassist-bandleader John Clayton and veteran staff producer Al/nPryor, engineered by Joe Ferla and mastered by Bob Ludwig.

In/nan era where young male singers believe that trying to channel Frank/nSinatra is the play-it-safe road to success, Vasandani instead strikes/na chord as an original that evokes integrity as a songwriter and song/nstylist. As a result, there/'s a rare depth of emotion to the lyrics in/nmany of these songs. “With the tunes I wrote and the songs I cover, I/nwanted to share feelings of both hope and loss,” says Vasandani, who/nwas a semi-finalist in the 2004 Thelonious Monk Institute Competition./n“Songs often express sentiments in black-and-white; I wanted to get to/na /'gray/' area of mixed emotions. Overall, I believe the album has a/npositive outlook, but acknowledges the struggle you go through to stay/npositive. That/'s the binding glue.”

Vasandani contributes/nthree fine originals to Eyes Wide Open. His tune of sweet escapism,/n“Storybook Fiction” (for which Clayton “hammered out a bridge in the/nstudio”), is, he says, “a song about a fictitious love that was borne/nout of living in crowded New York. You can almost see into a/nneighboring apartment, and the story begins there. It/'s a song that/nimagines and hopes for a perfect love.” Originally conceived as a/nweighty ballad, for the album Vasandani re-imagined it in an uplifting/nlight. “I wanted to give it an additional positive energy.”

Written/nwith a driving rhythm and featuring a brilliant vibes solo by Harris,/n“Send /'Em Up to Heaven” was partially inspired by the events of/nSeptember 11. “It/'s a song about struggling to forgive,” says/nVasandani. “I thought Stefon/'s voice on it would really solidify the/nvibe.”

“Please Mr. Ogilvy” is a straight-talking number/nabout an artist/'s desire to be supported, or as Vasandani sings, the/nneed “just to be endorsed by you.” He explains: “It/'s based on my/nrealization that people with vision still need advocates to help them/nrealize their goals. I/'ve found that this song resonates with so many/nartists and people trying to do their own thing. We all need that/nadvocacy, that endorsement.”

In addition to his own songs,/nVasandani covers tunes performed by neo-soul songstress Sade (the/nquiet, lilting “It/'s Only Love That Gets You Through”), alt-folk band/nIron & Wine (the gently swinging “Naked As We Came”), pop-blues/ngreat Percy Mayfield (a rarely covered gem, “Strange Things Happen,”/nwhich Vasandani says is “a fun way to say, /'watch out/'”), Brazil/'s/niconic songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim (the upbeat bossa-driven “I Was/nJust One More For You” with Wamble tearing up the proceedings with his/nguitar prowess), and Duke Ellington/'s composer Billy Strayhorn (an/nunabashed swinging take on “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing”). Several of/nthe songs on the album pair darker lyrics with sunnier musical/ndispositions. “Ella Fitzgerald taught me how effective a song can be/nwhen a serious issue is presented in a bright setting. In that way, you/ncan layer your emotions. On one layer it could be an upbeat tempo; on/nanother, it/'s about one/'s heart being broken.”

On Eyes/nWide Open, Vasandani includes two standards that have been part of his/nrepertoire since he was 18: “I Can/'t Give You Anything But Love”/n(delivered uptempo with a fine scat interlude) and “September in the/nRain” (with a relaxed feel).

One of Vasandani/'s major/ninfluences, Shirley Horn, figures prominently on two songs. The first,/n“I Could Have Told You,” is a song that Vasandani “really connected/nwith the lyrics. It/'s about the pride that follows heartbreak. Marcus/nexpresses this so well through the trumpet.” The other is “You Won/'t/nForget Me” where Vasandani pays tribute to Horn. “I try to emulate the/nway Shirley sang it,” he says. “John, Stefon and the band added some/nspecial touches, but the vibe is all Shirley: slow, haunting and eerie/nwith the pulse stripped down to the ride cymbal.”

Vasandani/nwas born in Chicago and grew up in a household where all kinds of music/nwas appreciated, from western and Indian classical to the pop of the/nday including Michael Jackson and the Beatles. His parents also/nlistened to jazz “from Ellington to Keith Jarrett” which piqued/nVasandani/'s curiosity about the music. At the University of Michigan,/nin addition to majoring in economics, he earned degrees in jazz and/nclassical music. He was named Collegiate Jazz Vocalist of the year by/nDownBeat in 1999, after which he moved to New York to pursue a career/nas a singer.

While he first took a job as an investment/nbanker on Wall Street, essentially subsidizing his passion, Vasandani/nlater quit to devote himself to music full time, hustling gigs at such/nvenues as Cleopatra/'s Needle and later the Zinc Bar. One of his big/nbreaks came when he had the opportunity to display his talent at the/nMonk Competition; another break was being enlisted by the Lincoln/nCenter Jazz Orchestra in 2005 to perform trombonist Ron Westray/'s/n“Chivalrous Misdemeanors,” which was jazz inspired by the fictional/ncharacter Don Quixote, at Rose Theater.

“There wasn/'t any/none turning point,” says Vasandani, who was signed to Mack Avenue/nRecords in 2006. “It was a process with a lot more refining than/ndefining moments.”

As for his home base in New York,/nVasandani says it/'s the perfect place for him to be. “I/'m connected to/na bit of the jazz scene, but there/'s also such a cross-pollination of/ndifferent kinds of music here. I/'m looking forward to expanding my/nreach” to establish myself and my voice as well as explore all the/ndifferent scenes here. There are so many fantastic elements of New York/nthat I want to put through my own filter.”

A Sunshower can be a rare occurrence, but when these opposing forces meet, magic and allure is in the air. This is exactly why Jupiter One chose the title (inspired by the Japanese short film, Dreams, by Akira Kurosawa) for their newest Ryko release, which hit the streets on September 15. Their far-out freshness mixed with timeless musical inspirations meshes together in a bittersweet indie-pop rock concoction—produced by the group and noted engineerChris Ribando (Diamond Nights, The Black Crowes, The Fever).
 
This young quartet consisting of K Ishibashi (lead vocals), Zac Colwell (lead guitar), Dave Heilman (drums) and Pat Dougherty (bass), has a knack for unifying their contemporary style with a range of musical influences. Sunshower is the result of Jupiter One/'s experienced ear. For instance, the dancefloor-friendly “Simple Stones,” filled with handclaps and soulful riffs, boasts a bass line for all ages while blending ‘80s Rolling Stones and MGMT. The epic opener “Volcano”resurrects the youthful spirit of the Beach Boys with The Flaming Lips, while delivering one of the disc’s best choruses. And if Ishibashi conjures The Shins on “Find Me a Place,” then he drops vintage, finger-picking folk on “People in the Mountain”. Lastly but certainly not least, their current single “Flaming Arrow,” a shimmering acoustic folk tune, shoots through with a bumping bass line and New Orleans inspired drum groove. This genre-bending approach creates a hook-heavy opus well suited for our A.D.D. times.

The first episode has been viewed over nine million times on YouTube. Pop/R&B singer Justin Bieber was just barely into his teens when he was discovered by talent agent and former So So Def marketing executive Scooter Braun. An Ontario native, Bieber placed second in a local singing competition in 2007 and began posting contest videos on YouTube. The videos caught the attention of Braun, who helped Bieber gain an impromptu audition with R&B star Usher. Impressed by what he saw, Usher, along with Island Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid, quickly signed the 15-year-old Bieber to a recording contract. Bieber released the single /"One More Time/" along with a video in 2009. His debut album, My World, is slated for release in September of 2009.

New York City/'s Morningwood brought a delightfully trashy and hedonistic sense of fun to alternative pop/rock in the early 21st century. Led by vocalist Chantal Claret, whose colorful and sexy approach owed much to the Pretenders/' Chrissie Hynde and the Divinyls/' Christina Amphlett, the Big Apple foursome formed in 2001, molding elements of hard rock, punk, new wave, and glam rock into a sex-driven amalgam of sound. Core members Claret and bassist Pedro Yanowitz (an ex-member of the Wallflowers, for whom he played drums) had originally met at a birthday party, while guitarist Richard Steel (formerly of the band Spacehog) and drummer Japa Keenon O climbed aboard soon after. In 2003, Morningwood recorded their self-titled debut EP, which they released independently on their own Rockhardcock Records label; they followed its release with a four-track EP titled It/'s T***. The band then signed to Capitol Records on the strength of its live show, which had earned an infamous reputation in New York for its good-natured sexuality and sweaty energy. Producer Gil Norton signed on to helm the band/'s debut album, Morningwood, which was released in early 2006. In early 2009 Morningwood announced their sophomore album would be released later in the year.

/'Open Hand/' - The Who, What, Where, When:
David Wilcox/'s /'Open Hand/' was recorded in 7 days from start to finish in December 2008 on 2 inch 16 track analog tape. No computer tricks were used, all of the songs on this release were recorded live, just 4 human beings playing music together. Very minimal overdubs were used, so most all of what you hear is exactly as it was played together by David and the other musicians live. Dan Phelps produced and played guitar and keyboard, Jon Evans: bass guitar and upright bass, James McAlister: drums and percussion.

/'Open Hand/' is David/'s 16th release. Since he performs solo acoustic almost exclusively, he is able avoid the common 8 or 10 week tour, preferring instead to strike a balance between traveling for shows and being at home in Asheville NC with his family. It/'s more than just a good balance for his life, he compares the two worlds of touring and creativity at home as being akin to the in breath and the out breath - inspiration and expression.

The Why:
David loves music for how it has tuned up his life. More than just entertainment, music has been a compass to navigate a life worth singing about. Some people describe the effect of what David does as if he were a mystic or a healer. So here are three different views from Gary Jules, Elizabeth Lesser, and Brian McLaren of what David does with this simple sound. First, Gary Jules describes the effect of David/'s musicianship.

Singer-Songwriter Gary Jules writes:
For most of us who are referred to as /"singer-songwriters/", there is more to a good song than just words, music, and performance. Each is beyond important of course but, to pummel the cliché yet again, we want the whole (song) to be greater than the sum of its parts (words, music, and performance). With really good singer-songwriters, these three elements become akin almost to the three dimensions of the physical world - a well-written song performed by someone who is really feeling it becomes a real /"thing/". Recordings, then, are like photographs of /"things/". Yeah, like Pinnochio, only with feelings.

David Wilcox is just this kind of singer and songwriter, and the songs on Open Hand exemplify perfectly what can happen when the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts. The first song I heard from this collection was Winter at the Shore. The opening chords move simply and inevitably toward their resolution, like seasons. At one point before the vocal starts, it sounds as if Dave/'s fingers might just stop playing. But they can/'t. The approaching resolution is . . . inevitable, as the passing of time. The images are pregnant. /"The ghost of you/ dances through/ the memories of this town/". Winter in a beach town means /"off season/". I think most days of a life are /"off season/", though we rarely take pictures on those days. Songs remind us to. Eleven words in it/'s already a sonic photograph of a magical world -- the passing away manifest in chords, fragility in the performance, the story on the way.

One of my favorite quotes is from Alexander Pope/'s An Essay On Criticism:
/"True wit is nature to advantage dressed/
What oft was thought but ne/'er so well expressed/".

That/'s really the gig with songwriting. You talk about experiences that folks will find familiar to their own experience, though nobody/'s ever talked about it before. Kinda like when Seinfeld says /"did you ever notice how . . . /".

Each of us has returned to the scene of a sunny memory of a loved one to find Winter and ghosts . . . we/'ve oft thought of it, but ne/'er heard it so well expressed.

The dictionary describes Shamans as /"intermediaries between the human and spirit worlds. They can treat illness and are capable of entering supernatural realms to provide answers for humans. Shamans perform a variety of functions depending upon their respective cultures: healing; preserving the tradition by storytelling and songs; fortune-telling; and acting as a guide of souls in this life and the hereafter./"

Hey! I know one of those dudes! And I didn/'t have to go to Siberia or Ecuador to find him. He/'s David Wilcox and he/'s right here in the USA. I have known David for many years; he has come to Omega Institute, the conference and retreat center I co-founded 30 years ago. I/'ve known him as a superb performer and songwriter--he never disappoints an audience. But I have also known him as a healer. When he comes to Omega he not only takes the stage and touches people through his music, but he also practices what he calls /"musical medicine./" I/'ve been around many healers and therapists and spiritual teachers in my years at Omega, but I have never seen anything quite as magical as what Dave does in a little room with his guitar and his amazing capacity to read the heart of a person, create a song on the spot, and use it to help that person let go of old burdens and move into a new way of seeing the world. Re-read the definition of Shaman above. That/'s what David Wilcox does. He/'s a homegrown shaman. Hallelujah!

And Christian Author/Speaker/Pastor Brian McLaren writes:
People who discover David/'s music immediately know that there/'s this /"other/" dimension to what he/'s about. They can feel something ... something different ... which they might call /"spiritual/" or they might call /"humane,/" but either way, they know it/'s not just good, it/'s *good*. This other dimension comes through just as strong in songs that make no overt reference to spirituality ... a song about healing a fracture in a relationship, for example, conveys a kind of covert tenderness and disarming honesty that brings words like /"virtue/" to mind. You start to think, /"Wow, if I let this guy/'s music really get into me, I might become ... like a better person or something!/" I guess David occupies that sweet spot where music and poetry and spirituality all overlap, and where there are layers upon layers of meaning and hope, so that what/'s broken inside us gets healed a little bit, and what/'s afraid gets comforted, and good things that are trying to be born in us get a push toward light. I don/'t mean to minimize David/'s amazing musicianship - either on the guitar, or with his voice, or with his extraordinary songwriting skills - but I guess I/'m trying to say that I think there/'s holy work that happens when David plays ... there/'s a big beautiful whole into which all the excellent parts get taken up, so each of his songs becomes a little bit like a parable, and it gets stuck in your imagination and won/'t leave you alone until you/'re changed for the better. Thank God for people who have this kind of gift and share it so generously with the rest of us.

Writtennwith/na driving rhythm and featuring a brilliant vibes solo by Harris,n“Send/n/'Em Up to Heaven” was partially inspired by the events ofnSeptember 11./n“It/'s a song about struggling to forgive,” saysnVasandani. “I thought/nStefon/'s voice on it would really solidify thenvibe.”

“Please/nMr. Ogilvy” is a straight-talking numbernabout an artist/'s desire to be/nsupported, or as Vasandani sings, thenneed “just to be endorsed by/nyou.” He explains: “It/'s based on mynrealization that people with/nvision still need advocates to help themnrealize their goals. Several ofnthe songs on the album pair darker lyrics/nwith sunnier musicalndispositions. “Ella Fitzgerald taught me how/neffective a song can benwhen a serious issue is presented in a bright/nsetting. In that way, youncan layer your emotions. On one layer it/ncould be an upbeat tempo; onnanother, it/'s about one/'s heart being/nbroken.”

On EyesnWide Open, Vasandani/nincludes two standards that have been part of hisnrepertoire since he/nwas 18: “I Can/'t Give You Anything But Love”n(delivered uptempo with a/nfine scat interlude) and “September in thenRain” (with a relaxed feel).

One/nof Vasandani/'s majorninfluences, Shirley Horn, figures prominently on/ntwo songs. The first,n“I Could Have Told You,” is a song that Vasandani/n“really connectednwith the lyrics. It/'s about the pride that follows/nheartbreak. Marcusnexpresses this so well through the trumpet.” The/nother is “You Won/'tnForget Me” where Vasandani pays tribute to Horn. “I/ntry to emulate thenway Shirley sang it,” he says. “John, Stefon and the/nband added somenspecial touches, but the vibe is all Shirley: slow,/nhaunting and eerienwith the pulse stripped down to the ride cymbal.”

Vasandaninwas/nborn in Chicago and grew up in a household where all kinds of musicnwas/nappreciated, from western and Indian classical to the pop of thenday/nincluding Michael Jackson and the Beatles. His parents alsonlistened to/njazz “from Ellington to Keith Jarrett” which piquednVasandani/'s/ncuriosity about the music. At the University of Michigan,nin addition/nto majoring in economics, he earned degrees in jazz andnclassical/nmusic. He was named Collegiate Jazz Vocalist of the year bynDownBeat in/n1999, after which he moved to New York to pursue a careernas a singer.

While/nhe first took a job as an investmentnbanker on Wall Street, essentially/nsubsidizing his passion, Vasandaninlater quit to devote himself to/nmusic full time, hustling gigs at suchnvenues as Cleopatra/'s Needle and/nlater the Zinc Bar. One of his bignbreaks came when he had the/nopportunity to display his talent at thenMonk Competition; another/nbreak was being enlisted by the LincolnnCenter Jazz Orchestra in 2005/nto perform trombonist Ron Westray/'sn“Chivalrous Misdemeanors,” which/nwas jazz inspired by the fictionalncharacter Don Quixote, at Rose/nTheater.

“There wasn/'t anynone turning/npoint,” says Vasandani, who was signed to Mack AvenuenRecords in 2006./n“It was a process with a lot more refining thanndefining moments.”

Indeed,/nthe title says it all: This 12-song collection of stirring originals/nand smart covers is an eye-opener to a fresh, young talent who displays/na singular, deep-brewed voice and possesses an uncanny sensibility to/nstraddle the fine line between jazz and pop. Vasandani is in the/ncompany of his established trio (performing together since 2001)/ncomprised of pianist Jeb Patton, bassist David Wong and drummer Quincy/nDavis. Guests on the CD include vibraphonist Stefon Harris, trumpeter/nMarcus Printup and guitarist Doug Wamble. The album is produced by/nesteemed bassist-bandleader John Clayton and veteran staff producer Al/nPryor, engineered by Joe Ferla and mastered by Bob Ludwig.

In/nan era where young male singers believe that trying to channel Frank/nSinatra is the play-it-safe road to success, Vasandani instead strikes/na chord as an original that evokes integrity as a songwriter and song/nstylist. As a result, there/'s a rare depth of emotion to the lyrics in/nmany of these songs. “With the tunes I wrote and the songs I cover, I/nwanted to share feelings of both hope and loss,” says Vasandani, who/nwas a semi-finalist in the 2004 Thelonious Monk Institute Competition./n“Songs often express sentiments in black-and-white; I wanted to get to/na /'gray/' area of mixed emotions. Vasandani contributes/nthree fine originals to Eyes Wide Open. His tune of sweet escapism,/n“Storybook Fiction” (for which Clayton “hammered out a bridge in the/nstudio”), is, he says, “a song about a fictitious love that was borne/nout of living in crowded New York. You can almost see into a/nneighboring apartment, and the story begins there. It/'s a song that/nimagines and hopes for a perfect love.” Originally conceived as a/nweighty ballad, for the album Vasandani re-imagined it in an uplifting/nlight. “I wanted to give it an additional positive energy.”

Written/nwith a driving rhythm and featuring a brilliant vibes solo by Harris,/n“Send /'Em Up to Heaven” was partially inspired by the events of/nSeptember 11. “It/'s a song about struggling to forgive,” says/nVasandani. “I thought Stefon/'s voice on it would really solidify the/nvibe.”

“Please Mr. Ogilvy” is a straight-talking number/nabout an artist/'s desire to be supported, or as Vasandani sings, the/nneed “just to be endorsed by you.” He explains: “It/'s based on my/nrealization that people with vision still need advocates to help them/nrealize their goals. I/'ve found that this song resonates with so many/nartists and people trying to do their own thing. We all need that/nadvocacy, that endorsement.”

In addition to his own songs,/nVasandani covers tunes performed by neo-soul songstress Sade (the/nquiet, lilting “It/'s Only Love That Gets You Through”), alt-folk band/nIron & Wine (the gently swinging “Naked As We Came”), pop-blues/ngreat Percy Mayfield (a rarely covered gem, “Strange Things Happen,”/nwhich Vasandani says is “a fun way to say, /'watch out/'”), Brazil/'s/niconic songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim (the upbeat bossa-driven “I Was/nJust One More For You” with Wamble tearing up the proceedings with his/nguitar prowess), and Duke Ellington/'s composer Billy Strayhorn (an/nunabashed swinging take on “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing”). Several of/nthe songs on the album pair darker lyrics with sunnier musical/ndispositions. “Ella Fitzgerald taught me how effective a song can be/nwhen a serious issue is presented in a bright setting. In that way, you/ncan layer your emotions. On one layer it could be an upbeat tempo; on/nanother, it/'s about one/'s heart being broken.”

On Eyes/nWide Open, Vasandani includes two standards that have been part of his/nrepertoire since he was 18: “I Can/'t Give You Anything But Love”/n(delivered uptempo with a fine scat interlude) and “September in the/nRain” (with a relaxed feel).

One of Vasandani/'s major/ninfluences, Shirley Horn, figures prominently on two songs. The first,/n“I Could Have Told You,” is a song that Vasandani “really connected/nwith the lyrics. It/'s about the pride that follows heartbreak. Marcus/nexpresses this so well through the trumpet.” The other is “You Won/'t/nForget Me” where Vasandani pays tribute to Horn. “I try to emulate the/nway Shirley sang it,” he says. “John, Stefon and the band added some/nspecial touches, but the vibe is all Shirley: slow, haunting and eerie/nwith the pulse stripped down to the ride cymbal.”

Vasandani/nwas born in Chicago and grew up in a household where all kinds of music/nwas appreciated, from western and Indian classical to the pop of the/nday including Michael Jackson and the Beatles. His parents also/nlistened to jazz “from Ellington to Keith Jarrett” which piqued/nVasandani/'s curiosity about the music. At the University of Michigan,/nin addition to majoring in economics, he earned degrees in jazz and/nclassical music. He was named Collegiate Jazz Vocalist of the year by/nDownBeat in 1999, after which he moved to New York to pursue a career/nas a singer.

While he first took a job as an investment/nbanker on Wall Street, essentially subsidizing his passion, Vasandani/nlater quit to devote himself to music full time, hustling gigs at such/nvenues as Cleopatra/'s Needle and later the Zinc Bar. One of his big/nbreaks came when he had the opportunity to display his talent at the/nMonk Competition; another break was being enlisted by the Lincoln/nCenter Jazz Orchestra in 2005 to perform trombonist Ron Westray/'s/n“Chivalrous Misdemeanors,” which was jazz inspired by the fictional/ncharacter Don Quixote, at Rose Theater.

“There wasn/'t any/none turning point,” says Vasandani, who was signed to Mack Avenue/nRecords in 2006. “It was a process with a lot more refining than/ndefining moments.”

If Sublime and No Doubt had an illegitimate lovechild, it would be named illScarlett. With fist pumping punk/pop/reggae jams, these guys will be your new favourite summer band and with due cause. The Mississisauga natives are prepping for their major record label debut album All Day With It, on SONY BMG MUSIC CANADA INC. set to be released July 10th, 2007.

Back in the day:

Vocalist Alex Norman and drummer Swav Pior met up in high school with visions of becoming rock stars, adding like-minded associates John Doherty (bass) and Will Marr (guitar) to flesh out their musical vision. Raised on the music of artists like No Doubt, Sublime and Goldfinger, illScarlett built the initial framework for their infectious sound by cultivating, shaping and finessing its compositions into its own signature creation.

illScarlett’s hardcore DIY Ethic worked as an effective tool to get the band noticed from the get go. Using old school methods (tirelessly touring their asses off) and new technologies (myspace, youtube, etc.) to initiate the groundswell illScarlett manufactured a solid fan base. The story goes that a few years ago, they pulled into the Warped Tour parking lot, fired up a generator and started playing for the people lined up for the concert with the hopes of selling some of the bands independent, self financed EP’s . This got the attention of Warped founder Kevin Lymon, who invited them to play his nightly post-show party. They killed it, have been guests of the warped tour ever since and we’d like to say ‘the rest is history’. Well…

That was 2004.

IllScarlett played hundreds of shows around the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). During 2004 and 2005, the band started with a handful of faithful fans that amassed into crowds numbering over 1000 in what seemed like the blink of an eye. In addition illScarlett played high visibility shows like the Warped tour in 2005 and 2006, Edgefest 2006 as well as the inaugural Virgin Festival on Toronto Island. Sharing the stage with Billy Talent, The All-American Rejects, Slackers, Kardinal Offishall, Yellowcard and Cypress Hill helped position the band as the one to watch. Fellow Streetsville superstars Billy Talent have been known to help out on stage with the corus of “Heaters” when the 2 bands share a bill!

With over 500,000 myspace plays and over 15,000 self-released cds sold between their initial cd, illP, and Clearly In Another Fine Mess, illScarlett has left a trail of up and coming bands with their jaws on the ground. “We watched what was happening with other bands and thought let’s just see how far we can take this on our own” reflects Alex. “It’s not that we were control freaks, we just really knew what we wanted and we went after it. Hard work paying off like that just makes you want to work even harder. It’s such a rush when it all starts to happen.”

EPdemic, illScarlett’s 2006 set up EP on the SONY BMG imprint red ink debuted at #133 on the Top 200 Canadian Soundscan charts and has sold over 10,000 units to date. EPdemic had two rock radio singles, “Heaters” (2000+ spins-rock radio, peaked at #32), and “One-A” (1000+ spins to date, and peaked at #17)

The Video for “One-A” got medium rotation on MuchMusic, heavy rotation on MuchLoud, and spent weeks in the Top 30 of Punch Much (the all-request channel!). mtv.ca continues to play the “One-A” video in regular rotation.

Fast Froward to July 10th, 2007 the scheduled release date of the bands major label debut All Day With It. Recorded with superstar pop/rock producer Matthew Wilder (famous for penning and singing the feel good, smash hit “Break My Stride” in 1984, and producing No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom) All Day With It features catchy sonic structures and sing along choruses which connect with the strong singles of their red ink release EPdemic (“Heaters”, “One-A”) but take illScarlett in new musical directions. The first single “Nothing Special” hit Canadian rock radio in early May and the response has been remarkable (key add at CFNY The Edge out of the box). Mixed in Vancouver by Vansterdam’s own Mike Fraser, famous in his own right for mixing Metallica, AC/DC, Guns N Roses, All Day With It finds a balance between the poppier side of Wilders producing and Fraser’s harder rock leanings.

Summer in December/January/February was definitely a new experience for the members of illScarlett. All Day With It was recorded in Los Angeles at NRG Studios and at Wilders home studio in Malibu during the winter months of 2006/2007, but the band did not get the chance to take in all heat that Los Angeles had to offer. There were no celebrity parties, no surfing in Huntington, no hanging on Hollywood Bvld. “We had all the music done and were struggling a little on the final lyrics for a few of our songs.” Commented Swav Pior on the recording process. “It made paradise a little harder to deal with. It was sunny and hot with beautiful palm trees everywhere, it was February and we had to stay in the studio and work on the final lyrics. It was tough.” Matthew Wilder had big aspirations for an illScarlett debut and put the band to task to create the best album they could. There were times when things were not gelling, where the weight of working with a world class producer got heavy, but it made the band realise they could do better.

The Glass Ceiling

When it comes to the music they make, illScarlett name Nirvana, Incubus, No Doubt, Beck, Sublime, The Police and Foo Fighters as their influences. They also credit The Beatles and Queen for inspiration. Wilder was aware of the bands influences and wanted to make an album that could sonically compete with these superstar acts. Matt took the band aside at the start of recording for a pep talk. “We will build your sound and songs up as far as we can, up to the glass ceiling……. and then we will smash the glass ceiling and make them up even better.” recounts Alex on Wilders empowering rant. “His words definitely inspired confidence in all four of us and I think it helped push our writing and playing way up on this record.”

The 10 tracks of illScarlett’s major label debut All Day With It were recorded, mixed and mastered and there was broken glass everywhere!

Key tracks “Nothing Special”, “Life Of A Soldier”, “Pacino”, and “The Fashion”, benefit from the extra time and focus Wilder spent developing and highlighting the subtle nuances of each songs initial structure. Another album high light “Who’s Got It” will see the FIFA U-20 World Cup Soccer tournament (summer 2007) taking ownership of the song as the official song of the tournament. The wildly infectious song with a cool call/response chorus will have the FIFA fans on their feet. illScarlett’s sound encapsulates the fevered excitement and youthful voice of the fans of this groundbreaking sporting event.

illScarlett will continue with their relentless tour schedule, their DIY ethics and with 10 new tracks from All Day With It under their belt deliver an unforgettable performance.

Morningwood’s conception is a thing of Manhattan legend: a veteran musician, Pedro Yanowitz, strikes up a conversation
with a spitfire 22-year-old, female, film student, Chantal Claret, at a four-in-the-morning, insider cocktail party at the iconic
Dakota Building on Central Park West. By the party’s end, Pedro had talked Chantal into becoming his partner—musically
speaking.
 
“It’s why you live in a city like New York” says Yanowitz, “—the possibility that a life-changing encounter could be at the
next intersection, or subway stop, or cocktail party.”
 
“We came up with the name Morningwood on our first phone call,” recounts Claret, “before we made a note of music
together.”
 
The formula clicked and the duo began gaining a reputation around the city as incredible live performers. Soon,
Morningwood’s buzz built and led them to Capitol Records.
 
“Our debut on Capitol,” Yanowitz hesitates, “…it didn’t reach its potential. And after that album, our backs were against
the ropes going into a second effort.”
 
“We wrote this album with no idea if it would even get picked up and put out there,” says Claret.
 
“The initial writing was so stressful for the both of us,” explains Yanowitz, “Chantal had just moved out to Los Angeles and
the entire music industry was in such turmoil that bands were just throwing in the towel left and right.”
 
So Morningwood did what couples trying to salvage their relationship do. “We did couples therapy,” says Claret. “We
realized that we clash on a personal level because we are total opposites, but that is exactly what makes our creative
sparks ignite in the music.”
 
And their creative relationship flourished, focused by the necessity to complete an entire song within a one or two day
window each time they got together—Yanowitz traveling from New York or Chantal from Los Angeles.
 
Whereas Morningwood’s 2006 self-titled debut could be described as straight-ahead rock, Diamonds and Studs lifts the
sonic textures of their signature pop-rock sound and wraps them over a new, beat-driven backbone. “We love the energy
of rock music,” says Claret, “but our artistic influences are so broad and we let them all meld together on this record.”
Yanowitz adds: “this album is made to make you move. The title [Diamonds and Studs] is perfect—the vocal melodies are
polished in this pop-sparkle but the guitars just snarl!”
 
The album title is a fitting analogy for the band itself: Claret and Yanowitz mixing their personalities of tough and sweet,
hard and soft, to create a musical fusion—like the name Morningwood itself—that is sure to please both the devil and
angel that exist inside everyone.
 
Their lead single, “Best of Me,” has garnered such heat that VH1 is featuring Morningwood as the VH1 you oughta know
artist beginning in October. Claret says of the VH1 endorsement: “It’s an incredible opportunity for exposure. TV really is
the new radio and is probably my favorite form of interaction—second to film, of course.”
 
Morningwood is no stranger to the small screen. “Best of Me” was already the theme song for the VH1 reality show ”Daisy
of Love,” and songs from their self-titled debut were featured across the medium, from Mercury car commercials to
Payless Shoes television spots, as well as video games like Burnout Revenge and Thrillville. The silver screen has also
featured Morningwood, their song “New York Girls” appeared in Sex and the City: the Movie and “Nu Rock” in The
Comebacks.

Rob Blackledge could have just as easily been a major league baseball player instead of modern music’s next big star.

Born/nand raised just outside of Jackson, Miss., Blackledge began playing/nbaseball “as soon as I could walk,” he says. But music was also/npresent. “I was raised in the Baptist church, and like a lot of kids/nfrom the South, that was my first experience with music.”

In/ntenth grade he and a band performed for a group of students at a school/nministry program. “It was the beginning of an era,” he says with a/nlaugh. By his senior year his transformation rom ball player to/nmusician was complete. “The desire to play baseball ompletely/nvanished,” he says. Despite attention from colleges and ajor league/nscouts, Blackledge made his way to Nashville’s Belmont niversity, a/nschool well known for its
music business program. “I wanted to leave Mississippi and try something different,” he says.

Three/nmonths into his freshman year, Blackledge entered a school talent/ncompetition. The resulting win—and the applause he received from those/nin attendance—helped him realize he’d made the right decision.

“I/nwalked out on stage, sat down on a stool, played a song, and people/nwent crazy,” he says. “That was the first real affirmation that I’d/never really gotten.”

Soon after, Dave/nBarnes, an accomplished independent artist who had built a successful/ntouring business, invited Blackledge to join him on the road. “I had no/nearthly idea what I was getting into,” Blackledge says now.

Success/ncame quickly. “I did 100 shows in 2006,” Blackledge says. “Most of it/nwas driving around the country in my Pathfinder with a keyboard and/nguitar and a bag. It was grassroots.”

Though based in Brighton, all five members of the Maccabees grew up in South London, where singer Orlando Weeks and drummer Robert Dylan Thomas attended school together. Though the friends would often write songs in Weeks/' bedroom, it wasn/'t until 2003, when they were introduced to guitarist Hugo White, that the band began to take shape. Soon bassist Rupert Jarvis joined on, as well as Hugo/'s brother and fellow guitarist Felix. A relocation to Brighton occurred when Weeks went there to study art, but after only a year he dropped out to concentrate fully on the Maccabees and their music. The group/'s first single, X-Ray, was released on Promise Records in November of 2005, and thanks to a strong XFM-Radio showing, the Maccabees were able to garner opening spots on an Arctic Monkeys tour. Fierce Panda picked up the second single, Latchmere, issuing it in the spring of 2006. The band/'s full-length debut, Colour It In, came out on Fiction Records a year later. Thomas left the band in 2008 to go into rehab; Sam Doyle was recruited to step in behind the kit. For their second album, 2009/'s Wall of Arms, the band worked with producer Markus Dravs, who also collaborated with the Arcade Fire.

Many bands play it safe – Hardcore Superstar doesn/'t.
The/nSwedish four-piece had the balls to marry two styles that grew up/nhating each other. We/'re talking about thrash metal and sleaze rock./nThe former hard, aggressive and ugly, the latter catchy, melodic and/ndecadent.
The bastard child/'s name?

– We play street/nmetal, offers drummer Magnus /"Adde/" Andreasson. Thrash and sleaze both/ncome from the gutter. They wear big sneakers, they are a bit stupid and/nthey both read pulp fiction. I can/'t believe that nobody brought them/ntogether before.

Hardcore Superstar did just that with the/nband/'s fourth and eponymous album, released in 2005. But the quartet/ndidn/'t arrive overnight, rather paying its dues during a rocky but/nrewarding ride.

The roots can be traced back to the late/neighties, when Adde was talked into playing the drums by older friend/nand neighbour Jocke Berg.

– I played the guitar and we tried our best with songs such as /"Paranoid/" and King Diamond/'s /"Shrine/", Jocke remembers.

The/nyoung teenagers, hailing from a small town just outside of Gothenburg,/nended up in different bands, who in turn chose different routes from/ntheir Iron Maiden inspired beginnings. Adde opted for heavier stuff in/nDorian Gray whereas the Jocke fronted Glamoury Foxx went in a glammier/ndirection. Incidentally, Jocke took up singing thanks to one Thomas/nSilver, fellow guitar slinger in Glamoury Foxx.

Eventually,/nJocke and Adde ended up together again. This time in Link, a classic/nrock oriented outfit with grunge leanings. They were joined by guitar/nplayer Fredrik /"Fidde/" Johansson and bass player Martin Sandvik, the/nlatter having originally tried to lure Jocke away to his own band,/nWanted. Link did the occasional gig and recorded a couple of demos/nbefore Adde headed west to pursue his dream.

– I kind of grew tired of Link, he confesses. I moved to Los Angeles to study at the Musicians Institute.

Link/nrecruited drummer Mika Vainio and kept going until parting ways with/nFredrik Johansson in the fall of 1997. The guitar player wanted to take/nthe band in a psychedelic and arty direction – the other three just/nwanted to rock.

– I remember showing Fidde the riff to/n/"Hello/goodbye/", Martin says. He turned his back on me and started to/nplay scales on the guitar. He obviously thought the riff sucked.

The/nremaining members couldn/'t be bothered, forging ahead and adopting the/nname Hardcore Superstar. Well, there was one little problem. Jocke/nalready was quite a frontman, but being the sole guitar player? Naaah./nAs luck would have it, Thomas Silver had just left local rockers Green/nJesus Saviours. Hardcore Superstar had a club gig lined up in/nGothenburg, so Jocke asked his old bandmate to help out. Things clicked/nimmediately and Thomas signed up as a permanent member.
His connection with Gain Productions helped Hardcore Superstar get /"Hello/goodbye/" and
/"Someone/nspecial/" onto a compilation album. The response was phenomenal and Gain/nduly offered the band a contract. And so in early 1998 the boys set out/nto record their debut album.

– We were influenced by the LA/nmetal scene of the eighties, says Martin. You know, LA Guns and Faster/nPussycat and the likes. But we also dug Oasis, as can be heard in/n/"Someone special/".

The result, /"It/'s only rock/'n/'roll/", was released in October 1998.

–/nPutting out an album was awesome, Jocke gushes. I felt like a rock/nstar. And then we got to support Motörhead in Scandinavia. It was like/n/"wow, we/'ve made it!/".

The initial 1000 copies of the album/nsold like hot cakes, and the second pressing sold out as well./nLegendary UK label Music For Nations took notice, but Mika Vainio/'s/ninterest was waning. The drummer jumped ship in late 1998. The band was/nbummed out but quickly decided that this might/'ve been a blessing in/ndisguise. There was this guy in LA with a bit of skill behind the/ndrums, remember. Thomas called Adde, suggesting he/'d get his ass back/nto Sweden to play some proper rock/'n/'roll.

– I said yes on the/nspot, Adde remembers. I felt done with LA, especially after being in a/npub brawl that sent me to the hospital. I was back in Sweden in less/nthan a month after Thomas/' call.

Everything gelled as soon as/nthe prodigal son returned. Hardcore Superstar signed to MFN but instead/nof having /"It/'s only rock/'n/'roll/" re-released – as the label was/npushing for – the band insisted on re-recording its best tracks plus a/nfew new songs.

– We wanted Adde to be on the album, Martin/nsays. Plus we/'d written /"Liberation/", /"Have you been around/" and some/nother great stuff.

The choice proved to be a wise one as soon/nas /"Bad sneakers and a piña colada” was unleashed unto a wider audience/nin the spring of year 2000. The old songs benefitted from better/nplaying and better production and /"Liberation/" and /"Have you been/naround/" both became successful singles. Together with lead-off single/n/"Someone special/", they climbed the domestic charts and made Hardcore/nSuperstar the first Swedish rock band to make it big in the new/nmillennium. Pretty much the rest of the year was spent on the road./nHardcore Superstar played 169 gigs, including a European tour and/nvisits to Japan and Canada.

– Those were our first proper/ntours, Martin says. Being in a tour bus for six weeks straight and/ngetting to experience Japan was incredible.

Still on an/nadrenaline high, the band didn/'t waste any time making a new album./nThis time, the objective was to explore the possiblities of the/nrecording studio to the max. If /"Bad sneakers.../" was a case of /"wham/nbam, thank you, ma/'m/", the follow up /"Thank you (for letting us be/nourselves)/" – released in September 2001 – was a meticulous piece of/nwork. Hardcore Superstar/'s American seventies/' classic rock record, if/nyou will.

– That was our Aerosmith phase, Adde offers. /"Thank/nyou.../" might not have been what people were expecting or wanting, but/nwe wanted to stick our necks out. We really enjoyed taking our time and/nusing all those expensive, vintage instruments. We even had a string/nquartet on there.

The album was recorded with producer Roberto/nLaghi at the helm. Halfway through the project, Hardcore Superstar got/nthe chance to open for AC/DC at a sold-out show (more than 50 000/npeople) at Gothenburg/'s Ullevi Stadium. The band shared the stage with/nfriends and fellow local heavy hitters Lok, with whom they/'d recorded/nthe single /"Staden Göteborg/" earlier in the year. The reworked punk/nrock song – written by the Troublemakers – was the theme song for the/nmusic event Popstad Göteborg and had received lots of air play./nSupporting Angus Young & Co remains a career high point.

–/nAC/DC is the ultimate party band, Adde gushes. The music is about pure/nenergy. That/'s exactly what we/'re trying to achieve with Hardcore/nSuperstar.

As a huge bonus and ditto honour, the guys were/ninvited to open for AC/DC in Turin, Italy, again a few days later./n/"Thank you (for letting us be ourselves)/" spawned the singles /"Shame/"/nand /"Mother/'s love/Significant other/" ( a double A-side). The album and/nthe singles all went top 20 in Sweden and Hardcore Superstar once again/ntoured Europe and Japan.

A familiar pattern ensued. The band/nwent straight to work – and the record turned out to be a very/ndifferent beast to its predecessor. Released in the summer of 2003, /"No/nregrets/" was a sonically raw and decidedly more Britsih sounding/naffair. Misfits had always been a big influence, but spurred on by/nRoberto Laghi the quartet discovered, or rediscovered, bands like/nBuzzcocks, The Ruts and The Stranglers. The album was preceded by the/nsingle /"Honey tongue/" and /"Still I/'m glad/" followed. Both made an/nimpact on the domestic charts, but the latter/'s title was not a good/ndescription of the mood in the Hardcore Superstar camp. Quite the/nopposite.

The heavy touring and heavy partying had taken its/ntoll and spirits were low. After yet another European tour, things/nbecame ugly when the band went to the US for selected shows. Hardcore/nSuperstar attended a party thrown at the Swedish consulate in New York/nCity, and Thomas Silver got into a fist fight with a journalist from/nSwedish tabloid Aftonbladet. The short tour was completed, but the/nmembers knew they needed time apart.

– We were so tired of/neach other, Adde sighs. Tired of everything that had to do with/nHardcore Superstar. It could/'ve been two of us getting into a fight.

Back/nin Sweden, Hardcore Superstar went on a hiatus. The decision was made/neasier due to the demise of Music For Nations. The future was looking/nvery uncertain, but there would be a twist of fate. Adde inherited an/nold house and spent the summer of 2004 refurbishing it with help from/nMartin. When at work, the guys blasted classic albums such as /"Appetite/nfor destruction/", /"Dr Feelgood/" and /"Among the living/" and found/nthemselves smiling again.

– It was like a revelation, Adde remembers fondly.
–/nWe just went /"this is what Hardcore Superstar should be about!/". We had/ndrifted away from our roots, in a way. It was time to write music from/nthe heart and not listen to anyone but ourselves.

Adde and/nMartin had a new album mentally mapped out from the word go, and the/nwriting process that followed was smooth and enjoyable. When all four/nmembers reconvened after more than six months apart, the chemistry was/nthere again. Sparks were flying at rehearsals and everyone was pleased/nwith the new and heavier direction, the self-proclaimed street metal.

Hardcore/nSuperstar knew they had come up with their strongest material to date./nIn order to keep the vision pure, the band enlisted friends Johan/nReivén (ex-Lok) and Christian /"Rizsa/" Isaksson to co-produce the record/n(with Adde and Martin) that was to put Hardcore Superstar back on the/nmap. No-one outside that inner circle was allowed to listen until the/nalbum was wrapped. As a teaser, the single /"Wild boys/" was released in/nJune. But even such a strong song couldn/'t fully prepare the media and/nthe audience for what was to come.

When /"Hardcore Superstar/"/nfinally arrived on the Gain label – yes, the band was back /"home/" – in/nNovember 2005, jaws dropped. The album was given excellent reviews/nworldwide and songs like /"We don/'t celebrate Sundays/", /"My good/nreputation/" and /"Bag on your head/" – all three eventually picked as/nsingles – became anthems.

The tour was a runaway success, with not just old fans turning out to celebrate the comeback.

–/nAt last we appealed to the old school metal fans. It was so cool to/nhave those long-haired and bearded dudes with denim jackets playing air/nguitar in front of us, Martin says with a smile.

The live/npower of Hardcore Superstar was captured on the dvd /"Live at Sticky/nFingers/", recorded in Gothenburg in March. The band toured Europe, made/ntwo triumphant trips to Japan (including an appearance at the/nprestigious Loud Park Festival) and played a number of European/nfestivals, including a rousing performance in a jam-packed tent at the/nSweden Rock Festival.

Having found a musical style and /"modus/noperandi/" that worked, the band was eager to start working on its a new/nalbum. It was decided that Adde and Martin should once again handle/nproduction duties, with old conspirator Roberto Laghi engineering.

The/nsingle /"Bastards/", recorded as a one-off and released in the summer of/n2007, proved this was a good idea. It went gold in Sweden and showed/nthat Hardcore Superstar were still on a creative roll. Before going/ninto IF Studio – the Gothenburg studio previously known as Studio/nFredman but now owned by In Flames – to record the album, Hardcore/nSuperstar played some festivals. The most remarkable thing was the/nreturn to Sweden Rock Festival, this time as support act to Aerosmith/non the main stage. Filled with confidence, the guys didn/'t have a/nproblem immortalizing their new songs. The idea was to build on the/nstrengts of /"the black album/".

– We knew exactly what we wanted to do, Adde says.

The/nrecording process was more enjoyable than ever, and you can really hear/nthat we were super confident. Musically, we went for diversity. You/nknow, making the hard stuff even harder and the choruses even grander.

/"Dreamin/'/nin a casket/" came out in November of 2007 and showed that /"Hardcore/nSuperstar/" was no fluke. The album became another big-seller and the/nband went on tour to support it.
However, all was not hunky dory. Thomas Silver had lost a bit of his fire and found it hard to be on the road.

At/nthe end of the first leg of the tour, he announced that he was quitting/nthe band. Losing a long-standing member was a heavy blow, but Hardcore/nSuperstar came up with a solution pretty much on the spot. The young/nand talanted Swede Vic Zino – whose band Crazy Lixx had been the/nsupport act on the tour – was chosen to fill the vacant spot for the/nAustralian and Japanese dates that were just around the corner.

The/nBosnia-born guitar player did a great job and was asked to join the/nband on a permanent basis. After some serious thinking, he accepted.

–/nI co-formed Crazy Lixx, so parting with my childhood friends was a/ntough thing to do, Vic confesses. But I just couldn/'t turn down an/noffer to join Hardcore Superstar. Since the black album, I/'ve been a/nbig fan of the band.

With Vic properly on board, Hardcore/nSuperstar played several European dates as well as some high profile/nSwedish shows. Selling out Lisebergshallen, the second biggest indoor/nvenue in Gothenburg, was a high point.
There have been many in the ten-year history of the band – and there are many more to come.

Biography

Liz/nRyder was born in Los Angeles in 1981 to Greek/American, English/Welsh/nparents. She grew up in the Midlands and has been writing and playing/nmusic for as long as she can remember. She now amply divides her time/nbetween the UK and Northern California, playing her music on both sides/nof the ocean.

Liz was/nborn into a family of actors and was exposed to theatre from an early/nage but this was not the route she decided to follow. With a shy/ndemeanor as a child she turned to music for an artistic outlet,/nlearning various musical instruments, first the piano, then flute, harp/nand recorder until she finally settled with the guitar and began to/nsing solo, write her own songs and use a wide range of open tunings/nwhich she is unafraid to exploit to the full. Highly influenced by Folk/nand Americana, Liz directs her music with a spirit rooted in tradition/nas well as the contemporary. With a soulful voice, she renders folk/nsongs with a modern twist and approaches song writing with a sense of/nprogression.

Unwilling/nto wait around for a record deal, Liz cut her first independent album/n/'Sacramento Orange/' in 2001 on her own label (featuring herself on/nguitar, vocals, harp, whistles, flute, recorder, bodhran and piano)/nafter which followed festivals, such as Warwick and Towersey, venues/nlike Acoustic Routes in Cambridge and support for artists such as Oh/nSusanna and Kreg Viesselman, as well as some radio play, live slots and/ninterviews on local Midlands BBC Radio. In 2001 she was the winner of a/nyoung musicians competition at Alcester and Arden Festival and in 2002/nwas a semi finalist at the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards. Since then/nshe has continued to manage herself successfully, shining and/nprogressing on the UK folk and acoustic scenes. In 2005 she graduated/nwith an MA in creative music technology and composition defining her/nskills as an artist, engineer and writer.

In/n2003 Liz recorded and produced her second album /'On the Neon Highway/',/na more contemporary singer/songwriter- based collection. Then in 2007/nshe independently released the four track /'Skyline EP/'. Look out for/nher new album in 2008 as well as more live recordings!

With/ninfluences ranging from Hank Williams to Cat Stevens, from Johnny Cash/nto Tori Amos, and from Ani Difranco to Joan Baez, Liz Ryder is a/nsongwriter with a heart in many places.

Young/nMiley Cyrus became an overnight sensation in 2006 as the star of the/nDisney Channel television series Hannah Montana, but fortunately her/nfamily has had some experience with that sort of thing -- her father,/nBilly Ray Cyrus, went from obscurity to stardom in a few short months/nwhen the song /"Achy Breaky Heart/" hit the charts in 1992. While a professional musician for a decade, in both the Punk band Pillars of the Community and Folk band Grimes & Kane, BONE GUNN has always been an outlet for Bryan’s obsessive perfectionism. All other work aside, BONE GUNN has always been the final goal. BONE GUNN embodies Bryan’s creative fervor and the incredible talent and drive of its members.

The story of BONE GUNN is the story of Bryan Kane, its creative force. Bryan grew up “in the military” as he puts it, moving from town to town, school to school until finally landing in up-state New York for most of his adolescence. His musical youth was shaped by playing traditional Irish music at home and especially at family gatherings. At 16 his mother passed away, a truly defining moment in his life. Bryan went from being a calm drug curious youth, to a substance addled young adult, over night. His father became estranged as his interest shifted to his new girlfriend, leaving Bryan to his own devices. Eventually Bryan was kicked out of his house, at only 17 years old, because of his drug use and outright disregard for authority (Bryan had, by this point, already been arrested once on suspicion of Arsen, and later on suspicion of Murder).


Bryan’s independence, drinking, and supply of LSD, led him to start an underage speakeasy for his friends and acquaintances alike. Live entertainment and hallucinogens for all! Bryan’s music became more and more furious along with his drinking and drug use. A police officer that Bryan had befriended, warned him of the imminent downfall of the underground scene he had birthed and what the consequences could entail if he didn’t act quick.


Bryan decided to take the money he had saved up to engage in some aimless travel with his guitar riding shotgun. As he traveled, the music that we hear in BONE GUNN today began to take form. The further Bryan got from home, and ironically, the further he got from drugs, the more eclectic the music became, forming a unique sound best described as “experimental folk.” Bryan however chooses to refer to it only as “Pop.” After an incident involving whisky, gasoline, Bryan’s car, a booger, and a cop’s badge, Bryan decided to take a sabbatical from drugs and booze. Soon after, he landed in Boston where he has been recording his songs. The live band, including Brian Penny (guitar) and Charles Kessenich (drums), has been together for nearly three years, with various other interim members filling the second guitar and bass positions. They have sold several thousand copies of their EP “From The Chain To The Sky.” Their first major tour brought them to Japan where they distributed their limited edition, self titled, Japan EP. Their latest release is a single for their song “Flies” and boasts five songs on an enhanced CD.

Shalone/nA.K.A Dwayne Bryan was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He is the son of/nAudrey Williams and George Bryan, who separated when Shalone was only 9/nmonths of age. Soon after that his father would then move to the states/nin search for a better life. Without a father figure Shalone grew up/nwithout any luxuries in one of the most notorious parts of Jamaica. The/nsound of gunfire and the sight of dead bodies would not deter Shalone/nfrom his favorite indulgence, music! You would find Shalone at the/nlocal stage shows, home watching Saturday afternoon specials or/nenjoying the marching band after school. Facing the adversities that/nmost children of poverty face, he armed himself with the creative/nimagination that took him away from the poverty stricken life he walked/ndaily.

He found his/nescape at the age of eleven, when he moved to America to live with his/nfather in Paterson, New Jersey. With a studio in the basement, Shalone/nwould take his aspirations for music to new heights. After spending 3/nyears with his father and recording in the studio Shalone rejoined his/nmother in South Jamaica, Queens. They say living in the hood breeds a/nmentality of survival. Either you play ball, stand on the corner or do/nmusic. Shalone was doing them all.

Petty/nrobbery would land Shalone on Rikers Island for some time. Although/nhustling made survival easier, Shalone knew he was destined for greater/nthings. Upon his departure he decided it was time for a legal hustle,/nand music was it. While in DC and in North Carolina the response from/nhis music made Shalone even hungrier for stardom in the music industry./nHis grind, hard work ethic and love for music landed him on the chorus/nof Petey Pablo’s first album (The Diary of A Sinner 1st entry), on the/nsong /"Truth About Me”. Instead of the big break Shalone was expecting,/nthings fell apart, Petey attained his star status, and with a child on/nthe way Shalone was on the grind again. Shalone has since gone on to do/nfeatures with Nore, Grafh, Bun B, Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz, and/nMussolini (Syke) from the Outlaws. Radio as well, has caught on! The/nairwaves in New York and along the east coast have been playing/nnumerous songs from Shalone.

The experiment offers its listeners/nan intimate insight into Ólafur Arnalds’ creative world. ’The songs/nwill be different from what’s on my albums; they will be short, mostly/njust made up from piano. So far/nmore than 70.000 people downloaded the ‘Found Songs’ series via/nfoundsongs.erasedtapes.com. Each track inspired a wealth of artwork/nfrom his fans – submitted via Flickr. Hosting this project on their/nofficial website, Erased Tapes Records watched the collaboration/nbetween Arnalds and his online audience flourish and found it fitting/nto combine the music and artwork into one complete work. A re-mastered/nphysical and limited edition will now be released as a CD, 10” Vinyl/nand high-quality Download.

Ólafur is currently in the studio/nwith Bardi Johannsson (Bang Gang) who will be co-producing his upcoming/nalbum. Arnalds growing reputation has also won him the attention of the/ninternationally renowned British dance choreographer Wayne McGregor who/nhas invited Ólafur to score his brand new work. ‘Dyad 1909’ will be/npremiered in London at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre this October. Welcome to the world of the Candle Thieves - a very wonderful, weird and whimsical place. Deep thinkers can lose themselves here in gentle, poppy pleasures, and enjoy soft-hearted sentiments with sinister undertows. The band that made this world together is the brainchild of two serious songwriters, who wear big, thick-framed glasses, walk out onto the stage to the sound of the Jaws theme tune, set off bubble machines, and play glockenspiels, toy pianos, shakers and snares. They summon up the spirits of Eels, Sufjan Stevens, and the Lucksmiths in their sounds, but make wonderful songs that are utterly their own.

But who are these strange characters? They are Scott McEwan and the mysterious man who hides behind the moniker, The Glock, - two sixth form friends from Peterborough, who studied music together at college. They lost touch with each other when they left the school gates, and started to pursue the rock and roll dream. Scott McEwan became the lead singer of a rock band, while The Glock played in a Keane-like pop group that had a top 40 hit. Both have toured the world and tasted the high life, but both craved the chance to make music that was more simple and intimate.

Soon, the Candle Thieves' very own brand of wonky, yet heartfelt, commercial pop, began to take shape. They started experimenting with new instruments, and found out they was something truthful and sweet about a man in his mid-20s pouring his heart out over a toy piano, or experimenting with gentle melodies on a Casio keyboard. They realised they could turn their little gigs into special events by handing out chocolates, setting off party poppers - and then shifting people's expectations by singing songs about nightmares and acute anxieties. More than anything, both boys wanted their music to make people sit up and notice them, and offer a brighter alternative to bands who simply walked onto stage with acoustic guitars, then watched people switch off.

The Candle Thieves come towards us with welcoming arms, singing songs about the strangeness of life that are touched ever so beautifully with hope, light and love. They make music for people who want more from bands, but who are still young at heart. They write for people who are tired of rock's bravado and brimstone, and who want more intimate sentiments to snag their souls and their minds. They may have spent their lives treading very different paths, and exploring life's different corners, but the simple pleasure of music has brought them home to its bright, lovely roots. And now - lucky us - it's our time to get thieving.

Youth Brigade

One of the lesser-known bands to come out of the early-/'80s West Coast punk rock explosion, Youth Brigade was formed by a trio of brothers (Shawn, Mark, and Adam Stern) at the end of summer 1980 in Los Angeles. Originally supplemented with other members, the group went back to a trio in early 1982, the same year they founded their own independent record label, BYO (Better Youth Organization). Later that year, the group issued their very first release, the three-track EP Someone Got Their Head Kicked In, before recording their full-length debut, Sound and Fury. Their debut hit a snag, however -- shortly after its initial release, the group halted further pressings when they realized they weren/'t entirely satisfied with how it came out, resulting in the release of a reworked version in June 1983. Another three-song EP, What Price?, hit the racks in the spring of 1984, resulting in Youth Brigade/'s first tour of Europe.

But despite being able to obtain success entirely on their own terms, Adam Stern decided to leave the band in 1985 in order to return to art school. Adam/'s final show was scheduled in June of the same year at Fenders Ballroom in Long Beach, CA, which was recorded and issued as the Sink with Kalifornija album, and Shawn and Mark opted to carry on without Adam. Eventually Adam returned to Youth Brigade, as the trio toured both North America and Europe. In 1991, the group took a break as its members concentrated on other projects (Mark and Adam with the swing revival band Royal Crown Revue, and Shawn with the pop-punk outfit That/'s It!). Youth Brigade would pick up where they left off shortly thereafter, as they issued several albums throughout the remainder of the decade: 1994/'s Happy Hour, 1996/'s To Sell the Truth, and 1998/'s Out of Print. BYO Records also continued to operate strong through the years, releasing albums from bands like Pinhead Circus, the Unseen, the Business, and many more; the label also began a well-received series of split releases (Leatherface and Hot Water Music being the first), which Youth Brigade took part in on a 1999 split with San Francisco/'s Swingin/' Utters.

Drawing heavy influence from Green Day and blink-182 early on, pop-punk quartet All Time Low formed in the suburbs of Baltimore, MD, in 2003 around singer/guitarist Alex Gaskarth and guitarist Jack Barakat. The two soon added bassist Zack Merrick and drummer Rian Dawson to round out their energetic pop-punk sound and rowdy live show, which often included silly string and beach balls. Honing their skills between homework and other teenage commitments, the guys managed to tour across the East Coast and South during school breaks. They released the four-song EP The Three Words to Remember in Dealing with the End through the local label Emerald Moon in 2004 and followed up with a full-length, The Party Scene, a year later. Touring nationwide that summer, the band found itself on bills with similar-minded acts like Motion City Soundtrack, the Early November, and Plain White T/'s. Along the way, All Time Low also bumped into fellow pop-punkers Amber Pacific, who brought the young band to the attention of their label, Hopeless Records. The label was immediately impressed, and All Time Low were officially part of the Hopeless family by March 2006, just a few months before they graduated from high school. Finally done with schoolwork to concentrate full-time on music, the group issued Put Up or Shut Up -- a seven-song EP that mostly featured new recordings of older material -- that July. Now able to tour freely, the band supported the release on a handful of summer Warped Tour dates before subsequently hitting the road nationwide with Amber Pacific.

A Bad Think is a Virginia Beach band driven by the many talents of Michael Marquart, one-man wonder and former drummer for British Grammy Award winning band A Flock of Seagulls. Simple Rhymes is his sophomore solo venture—following a self-titled release in 2006—and is delightfully produced much like the first, a cathartic afterglow of an album through which the listener can directly sense Marquart’s serene triumph over life’s trials. Marquart is a survivor, and his humility and positive acceptance of life as it is is precisely what is most endearing in his tracks—his music is pensive, his lyrics meant to be carefully considered. Embedded in the simplicity of Simple Rhymes’ melodies is the wisdom of his vocals and intensity of feeling manifest in the layered guitars. Anne McCue has recently been included along with Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Patty Griffin and other great artists in the collection /'4 Decades of Folk Rock/' and was a special guest at the International Guitar Festival.

She released her latest album /"East Of Electric/" in August 2008. McCue recorded and produced the album at her own Flying Machine Studio in Nashville. It was mixed by Mike Esser at 16 Ton Studio and was mastered by Ray Kennedy at Zen Masters.

McCue recorded the album whilst waiting to record a new electric album. Inspired by the golden era of folk pop music which took place in the late sixties with such albums as Rubber Soul, Aftermath, bands like The Byrds and artists like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, Anne set about recording, playing every instrument she could get her hands on - guitars, mandolin, cheatin/' banjo, piano, harmonica, lap steel, slide banjo, bass guitar, ukulele, shaker, tambourine, organ, drum etc.

Special guests include Eamon McLoughlin of The Green Cards (violin, viola & cello); Irish singer/songwriter Tony Kerr (backing vocals); artist Leslie Mills (tapdance) and Dave Ray of The Coalmen (snare drum) . While Anne is primarily known for her guitar playing skills, she gets to stretch out here on many other instruments and undertook all production and recording duties for the album. She was also able to call on her arranging skills for the string section in /"Money In The Morning/".

/"I wanted to stay close to that late sixties folk rock ethic, keeping it real, not adding too much instrumentation, keeping the story and the melody in the forefront ... Being included on the /'4 Decades of Folk Rock/' anthology encouraged me to follow this path and style which I am naturally inclined toward anyway. Recording an album at home seemed like something great and productive to do whilst waiting for the dust to settle in the music business around me.../" says McCue.

As one of the foremost female guitarists of our time, Anne has been invited to play at the Jimi Hendrix Tribute Concert at the Adelaide Guitar Festival alongside world renowned guitarists such as Vernon Reid and John Hammond.

Anne has appeared as guest guitarist/vocalist on albums by Michelle Shocked, Gina Villalobos and Stephen Rowe and has been featured in Guitar Player Magazine, No Depression, Harp, Performing Songwriter, Billboard, Australian Musician etc...

Her song /'Stupid/' is included on the Time Life release /'4 Decades Of Folk Rock/' which features such legendary artists as Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Suzanne Vega and Patty Griffin.

She has released her fourth solo album, Koala Motel, to critical acclaim and has recently co-produced two albums by other artists - Stephen Rowe and Leila Florentino.

Guests on /'Koala Motel/' include Lucinda Williams, John Doe, Nancy Wilson (Heart), Jim Lauderdale and Doug /'Lovejoy/' Pettibone.

Anne recently took part in The Broad Festival - a national tour of Australia put together by Deborah Conway in which she played at concert halls all over Australia including the Sydney Opera House.

Her two previous albums were recorded at Dusty Wakeman/'s Mad Dog Studios in Burbank, California and were released on the Messenger Records label. McCue and Wakeman co-produced the albums. Going in with the philosophy of some of Anne/'s favourite three piece bands, on /'Roll/' she played the guitars, Dusty played bass with Dave Raven on the drums. The three jammed on the material. Carl Byron added keyboards. The album has received critical acclaim from such publications as Billboard, Entertainment Weekly and XM Satellite Radio (Top 5 Album of the Year) and was picked by Bob Harris of the BBC as his favourite album of 2004.

Offered the chance to play music in Vietnam for a year Anne found it, /"an unbelievable experience and it really changed my life. It also gave me the chance to hone my lead guitar playing./" Anne rode a 1965 Vesper and toted her guitar around on the bike /'just like the locals/'. After playing in all kinds of bands almost every night it was time to return to Melbourne where she frequented the blues jams.

She continued recording her original songs but took the opportunity to become a member of a group which was soon signed to Columbia Records giving Anne the opportunity to tour the U.S. and Canada as part of the /"Lilith Fair./" This experience brought her on stage with many of the greats such as The Pretenders, Emmylou Harris and Sarah McLachlan and took her to Los Angeles. The band proved to be creatively frustrating for Anne, so she left the group to pursue her interrupted solo career.

Eventually she completed her debut album /"Amazing Ordinary Things/". Anne co-produced all the tracks except /"Angel Inside/" which was produced by Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell). The CD is named after a painting by Jules C. McCue, Anne/'s sister, whose artwork is found throughout the packaging.

McCue also released a live recording from her tour in 2002 with Lucinda Williams entitled /"Ballad Of An Outlaw Woman/"‚ and is currently editing the DVD which chronicles her time on that tour.

Known best for their 1984 anthem /"Rock You Like a Hurricane/" and the 1990 ballad /"Wind of Change,/" the German rockers the Scorpions have sold over 22 million records, making them one of the most successful rock bands to ever come out of Continental Europe.

Originally formed in 1969 by Rudolf Schenker, the original lineup consisted of rhythm guitarist/vocalist Schenker, lead guitarist Karl-Heinz Follmer, bassist Lothar Heimberg, and drummer Wolfgang Dziony. In 1971, Schenker/'s younger brother Michael joined the band to play lead guitar and good friend Klaus Meine became the new vocalist. The group recorded Lonesome Crow in 1972, which was used as the soundtrack to the German movie Das Kalte Paradies. Although they failed to get into the public/'s eye, the early formation of /'70s rock band UFO noticed Michael Schenker/'s guitar playing and hired him as their lead guitarist; Michael, therefore, would leave the band in 1973. Guitarist Uli Jon Roth replaced him, and under his guidance the group released four consecutive albums under the RCA record label: Fly to the Rainbow (1974), In Trance (1975), Virgin Killer (1976), and Taken by Force (1977). Although these albums failed to attain any serious attention in the United States, they were all quite popular in Japan. By the time Taken by Force was released, Roth made the decision to leave the band and form Electric Sun after feeling that his musical ideas would take the group in an entirely different direction. Tokyo Tapes, a double live album that the group recorded in Tokyo with Roth, was released in 1978. Shortly after Roth/'s departure, Michael Schenker was kicked out of UFO for his constant alcohol abuse and came back to play with the Scorpions in 1979, who had recently signed with Mercury Records. The group released Lovedrive that same year and played their first American tour, but Lovedrive failed to attract attention, being banned in the United States because of its sexually explicit cover. Still coping with his drugs and alcohol addiction, Michael missed tour dates repeatedly and guitarist Matthias Jabs was hired to fill in for him on nights when he was absent. Michael eventually would leave the band a second time after realizing that he was failing to meet their expectations.

Now with a lineup of Klaus Meine on vocals, Rudolf Schenker on rhythm guitar, Matthias Jabs on lead, Francis Buchholz on bass, and Herman Rarebell on drums, the band released Animal Magnetism in 1980 and embarked on another world tour. Surprisingly, Animal Magnetism went gold in the United States, and the Scorpions immediately went back into the studio to record their next release. Problems arose, however, and the project was postponed because Meine had lost his voice and would have to have surgery on his vocal chords. Many thought Meine had been fired from the band, and rumors spread that metal singer Don Dokken had already replaced him. The Scorpions proved these rumors untrue when Meine returned for the 1982 release Blackout, which contained the cult hit /"No One Like You./" A major success worldwide, Blackout sold over one-million copies in the U.S. alone. But as popular as Blackout was, it was the band/'s powerful follow-up, Love at First Sting, that succeeded in making them superstars. Released in 1984, the album boasted the MTV single /"Rock You Like a Hurricane/" and would eventually achieve double-platinum status. The group undertook one of their most successful world tours yet, boasting an outstanding stage show with high-energy performances.

After releasing World Wide Live in 1985, the band took a long hiatus and remained uninvolved from the music industry for two years. Their tenth studio album, Savage Amusement, was finally released in 1988, and the hit ballad /"Rhythm of Love/" brought on another major success. In 1990, the album Crazy World was released and would eventually become the Scorpions/' biggest-selling record to date, drawing on the strength of the hit ballad /"Wind of Change./"

Not too surprisingly, Crazy World was the last successful Scorpions release in the U.S. By the time their Face the Heat album hit the shelves in 1993, many longtime fans had already lost interest in the band, due to the alternative explosion of the early /'90s. Face the Heat did eventually reach gold, and in 1995 the band released another live album, Live Bites. Now with bassist Ralph Rieckermann and drummer James Kottak, they released Pure Instinct in 1996. Mercury Records assembled a double album of the band/'s greatest hits, Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years, and released it in 1997. Eye II Eye, an album in which the band experimented with pop-techno melodies, was released in the summer of 1999. Moment of Glory, featuring the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and several revamped versions of Scorpions cult classics, was released in fall 2000.
