We/ncaught up with the band at Spin Nightclub in Broad Ripple on the/nevening of a rather large party celebrating the release of their debut/nCD, In the Realm Of. While Spin is a fine club with some great acts on/nthe bill, maybe I just vist on the wrong nights (or I/'m chasing the/nwrong bands), because I can honestly say that I haven/'t seen 6308/nGuilford Avenue that hoppin/' since the days of "The Patio."

... insert silent moment for The Patio here ...

The/nGreat Hookup is a laid-back rock/reggae/blues/jam band playing a wide/nrange of material that, thanks to two very distict songwriters and/nvocalists (Andy Baker and Rory Connolly), never gets old or falls into/nany kind of repetitive ruts. The sound is rounded out by an incredible/nrhythm section (Brad Edwards on bass;/nKris Edwards on Drums) and colored with some great audio textures/ncourtesy of a keyboardist (Russ Cameron) who knows how to fill in the/nproverbial cracks in the music, as well as pump out a great solo when/nit/'s called for. In short, these are five well-tuned and tight-playing/nmusicians that work extremely well together -- and judging by their/nfollowing that night, you probably didn/'t need me just now, pointing/nout something that you already knew.

Contrary to rumor, he is not the guy in the/nfreecreditreport.com commercials.

Recently, however, he has put/nhis efforts into his own music as the primary/nsinger/songwriter/guitarist in the Scooter Hanes Band, and/ninexplicably, is actively looking to trade steady, high-paying,/ncorporate gigs for the smaller audiences of the less-stable,/nless-appreciated, all-original music scene. For that, we salute and/nsupport him.

Kurt/nRambis is one of the leading bands in Indy/'s basement/underground/DIY/nscene, which combines the grass-roots work ethic of the Indie scene,/ncombined with the angst and wit of the 70/'s punk scene, and packages it/nup with energetic, passion-filled, original music. It/'s not for/neverybody, but I/'m increasingly convinced that everybody should sample/nit at least once before they pass judgment on it. /nThis week/'s guest, Shelby Kelly, is a very talented singer/songwriter/nwho first cut his teeth in the alternative/underground rock band/nCreepin/' Charley and the Boneyard Orchestra, a long-time staple at the/nMelody Inn, Radio Radio, and most of the popular clubs in the city. /nHis first solo project, Alone, is about as far from that particular/nbrand of music as you can get. The eight track CD showcases Shelby/'s/ntalents as a lyricist and singer who is full of passion, wit, and/ncharm. Not quite folk, not quite rock and roll -- but accessible to/nboth audiences -- these songs will appeal to any fan of good music,/nsolid vocals, and poetic lyrics.

Donnell and Vincent are immigrants/nto the Indianapolis scene, hailing from Detroit and Chicago/nrespectively, and bring a unique approach to combining their hip hop/nroots with the more soulful, R&B vocal tones that are their/npassion. In doing so they have created some fantastic, accessible/nmusic, but at the same time alienated themselves and caused some/ncontrovercy among the purists in their circles. Joining them on this/ninterview is Perry Stevens, owner and chief engineer at Snapjoint/nStudios, who is producing and managing the band as the make their/nascent to greater things.

Death knell for a podcast ... or so I thought.

As/ninterviews go however, these guys were among the easiest to work with./nAs unprepared interviews go, I think they were pretty friggin/' awesome/n-- a very intelligent, prepared, down-to-earth group of guys who have/ngreat stories, quick wits, and some excellent music that they shared/nwith us.

By way of quick review: Their debut CD, Cornfields to/nConcrete is a wickedly diverse collection of seven tracks that has a/nlittle something for everyone. Hip hop, funk, strait-ahead rock,/nacoustic folk, are all represented ... and represented well. The/nShadyside Allstars are a group of virtuoso musicians who play a very/ntight style of improvisational, "jam band" music. As such, they have/nbuilt a huge following not only here in Indianapolis, but also around/nthe rest of the midwest where they regularly play small and large/nvenues as well as festivals.

As a further word of warning,/nportions of this podcast are probably not suitable for more sensitive/nears ... The/n"interesting" thing about strange face is that they maintain a unified,/nstraight-forward rock and roll edge, despite varying musical/nbackgrounds and tastes. The "truly unique" thing about them is that/nthey play an all-ages friendly, PG-Rated set, yet still manage to/nappeal to both younger and older audiences alike -- no shock tactics,/nno gimmicks ... they do it using nothing but straightforward/nrock-and-roll.

And, you have to respect that!

Despite/nsome background noise issues and a shortened time frame to accommodate/na sound check for a gig they were playing across the street at the/nBluebird, the guys gave a funny and entertaining interview and shared/nsome fantastic music from their impending CD release.

On/nthe other hand, Strange Face are a great bunch of guys who are a lot of/nfun to hang around, and who play some kick-ass heavy rock. We caught/ntheir set at Birdy/'s, where they gave veteran acts like Flesh Suit and/nSmoke Ring. True to their word they were completely out of control on/nstage and certainly gave the more-seasoned veterans a run for their/nmoney that night. Not to mention, if the six song demo they recorded in/na single session is anything to go on, I can/'t wait to hear what they/ndo when they/'ve got time and money on their side.

This show also/nmarks the beginning of what is planned to be a "occasional two-host/nformat," with my good friend Mark Miller acting as the first guinea/npig. This is mostly to keep energy levels up, add a little variety to/ninterviews (which even I/'ll admit are becoming somewhat patterned), and/nensure that Indy In-Tune isn/'t becoming "the Darrin show." The plan is/nto get a few movers and shakers, former guests, the occasional random/nlistener, and important non-performing members of the Indianapolis/nmusic scene to step up to a mic once in a while. To that end, if you/'re/ninterested in donning a headset and interviewing your favorite band, drop me a line, we/'ll set something up.

Long-time veterans of the industry, Kevin Rafferty, Shawn/nRafferty, and Travis Beck are very relaxed and professional as/nperformers, both on-stage and off, and talked at length about a variety/nof subjects with little or no prompting or corralling from me.

Both on-stage and off, Tish/nis a tireless worker for human rights, both at home and abroad, working/nfor various charities and causes, including my own band/'s very/nsuccessful benefit for our friend Tammy Dial/n-- a woman whom, at the time, Tish had only known for a few minutes/nbefore graciously volunteering her time, talents, and loyal fan base to/nour cause. In all, she is a superlative woman and humanitarian that I/nam proud to call my friend.

Side note: It/nis my practice as of late to dub the guest artist/'s music underneath/nthe interview to cover up edits, line noise, and other undesirable/naudio elements inherent with location recording. In the case of this/nweek/'s show -- recorded live in a very crowded Jazz Kitchen/n-- I discovered that the band playing in the next room during the/nrecording was clearly audible and prominent enough that it couldn/'t be/nEQed or filtered out of the mix without distraction. Therefore it is/nimportant to note that the "bed music" you hear during the interview is/nnot Tish Lyndsey/'s, but is actually the normal ambience of the venue/nand, to the best of my knoweldge, should be credited to Rob Dixon/'s/ngroup, Triology. If I am mistaken in my identification/recollection, please correct me and I will give proper attribution.

The most unique thing about these guys --/nin particular, David and Daren -- is that if you know their resume,/nhear their music, and then meet them socially, there is a certain/nexpectation of "heavy metal party guys biting the heads off of bats."/nIn reality, however, they are very quiet, soft-spoken, unassuming/npersonalities -- to the point that I was even wondering how I was going/nto get an interview out of them. On the other hand, if you catch them/nin their element during a performance, back stage at a show, or any/ntime there/'s a microphone in the vicinity, then/nyou/'re meeting a completely different group of guys: the non-nonsense,/nperformance-focused, rock star package you would expect. Yet even then,/nas the interview shows, they don/'t give up any of the down-to-earth/namiability and charm at their core. And of course the music speaks for/nitself.

On/none hand, I freely admit that some of the language, actions, and/nstories from this interview are completely inappropriate for children/nand may even be offensive to many adults. Yes I know that some of you/nregular listeners have a low tolerance for the type of humor that is/nprevalent in this week/'s show. I am not insensitive to this -- hence/nthe repeated warnings. I even admit that it would have been relatively/neasy to cut the seven or eight most potentially-offensive minutes out/nof the interview and "bleep" some of the harsher language.

On the other hand, this is easily the most fun I/'ve ever had recording a podcast.

A few lessons learned from the evening:

1. Jager tastes deceptively like candy ... but it isn/'t. It/'s more like "evil cough syrup."
2. Jager will make you drunk-text your ex-girlfriend at 3:00 AM, and the results will not be pleasant.
3. When/nbuying The Dirty Third a round of "whatever they/'re drinking," be/ncareful: There are five of them (plus you), and whatever that/nJager-mixed concoction is, it costs eight-bucks a shot. (It/'s really/ntasty though.)
4. When I detox from this encounter, I will definitely be asking Five /'Til Dawn to do an interview.

This/nshow/'s guest, Aether Law, is a heavier, alternative, experimental rock/nband that pushes the boundaries of conventional song structures. While/nyou may not see them headlining the biggest venues in Indy (yet...),/nowing to their insistence on playing almost all original music, don/'t/nlet that deter you from tracking them down and attending one of their/nshows. This band/'s energetic and charismatic stage presence has earned/nthem quite a loyal following that gets larger every time I see them./nWhile they may come off as somewhat laid back and quiet in the/ninterview, they certainly let their music speak loudly when on stage.

For those of you who thought maybe my moniker of
"music geek" was somewhat unwarranted, this episode should either put your
mind at ease, or put you off the show altogether. But hey, it's my show, so expect me to be self indulgent,
exploratory, and rebellious once in a while by appealing to something other
than the greatest common denominator when it comes to music and interview
topics, since that's really the whole point of this podcast.

I even conducted this week' interview without research or
extensive notes (which is unheard of for me) -- just played their tracks a few times and decided to improvise. Top that end, this show continues my experimentation with different
interview styles and locations. This week,
as you can tell, we are in public, at a sidewalk tavern located on a busy
intersection in downtown Indianapolis.
As such, the urban ambience (and wind) may be a bit loud at times, but
hopefully will not detract from your listening enjoyment. It also makes the editing a little more
obvious and choppy-sounding. Hopefully you still aren't
expecting professional-quality production values from me after all these weeks.

On the backside of things, the podcast continues to grow
in popularity (by about 50-100 listeners per week). This is mostly due to bands promoting their appearance on the
show, obviously, and has little to do with anything I've done. However,
it's been gratifying to see that,
contrary to my expectations for a local music podcast, we actually have
listeners in Alberta, Ontario, and Germany, which is extremely cool.
Since I didn't get a chance to say it in this weeks' show, a special
thank you to those of you who subscribe (or at least regularly
download) this show, and a hearty welcome to those of you who are here

You know, I think I'm going to make a concerted effort to
stop apologizing for all these technical issues -- particularly those beyond my
control. So here goes: this week's interview -- Opulent Records'
artist Extra Blue Kind -- was brought to you at great personal risk and grief by
the staff at the Indy In-Tune podcast.
Well, I say "staff" but really itâs Dennis "Doc" Reeves and myself. This time we've braved tornados,
golfball-sized hail, and severe thunderstorms; we've suffered through two set
ups before finding the only spot in the venue quiet enough to conduct an
interview; and we've struggled for hours to edit out coughing, doors slamming,
freezers and fluorescent lights buzzing, turntables blaring, people screaming, and
a complete disaster of a soundcheck -- featuring feedback, fuzzing mics, amp
pops, and all manner of dropped items -- going off in the background.

See, I'm not apologizing for that. Deal with it. Hmph!

Fortunately the music stands by itself. Extra Blue Kind skirt uncharted areas of
pop, indie, and alternative music to bring you a fresh approach, unique style,
and accessible sound that is sure to take them far in the music industry. We were fortunate to catch them right before a
hometown performance at the Nuvo Amped show in the middle of their successful nation-wide
tour in support of their new album "The Tide and the Undertow."

We also talk a little about the DMCA 2006 bill soon to be
introduced in congress, poke a little fun at the RIAA (but who doesnât
really?), and speculate a bit about what might be in store in the upcoming
release of Windows Media Player 11.
