Jesus, I Come 1887
One of the best histories of the gospel song era is George Stebbins' autobiography, Reminiscences and Gospel Hymn Stories. Stebbins was born in ht e mid-1880s in New York and showed early musical prowess. At age twenty-three, he moved to Chicago where he worked in churches and became acquainted with some of the "greats" of gospel music, such as Sankey and Bliss. In the late 1870s, D. L. Moody got hold of him, sending him into a lifetime of music evangelism. Listen to the show for Stebbins' account of the first time he and D. L. Moody ministered together, and how "Jesus, I Come" came to be written.
Music on Today's Show

The instrumental version is from Worship Service Resources, and is used by permission.

Scott Wesley Brown graciously granted permission to use his beautiful rendition of an updated version of this classic hymn.

                       Then Sings my Soul 2 Set - Volumes 1 + 2

Jesus, I Come

Lyrics: William T. Sleeper Music: George C. Stebbins

Out of my bondage, sorrow and night,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into Thy freedom, gladness, and light,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of my sickness, into Thy health,
Out of my want and into Thy wealth,
Out of my sin and into Thyself,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of my shameful failure and loss,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the glorious gain of Thy cross,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of earth’s sorrows, into Thy balm,
Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm,
Out of distress to jubilant psalm,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of unrest and arrogant pride,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into Thy blessed will to abide,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of myself to dwell in Thy love,
Out of despair, into raptures above,
Upward for aye on wings like a dove,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the joy and light of Thy home,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of the depths of ruin untold,
Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold,
Ever Thy glorious face to behold,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Listen to the show for the story of how this encouraging hymn was inspired.

Our hymn is performed beautifully by Natalie Nicole Gilbert.

His Eye Is On The Sparrow
Lyrics: Civilla D. Martin
Music: Charles H. Gabriel

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain:
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Wesley

The Church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord,
She is His new creation
By water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her
To be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her
And for her life He died.

She is from every nation,
Yet one o’er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation,
One Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy Name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses,
With every grace endued.

The Church shall never perish!
Her dear Lord to defend,
To guide, sustain, and cherish,
Is with her to the end:
Though there be those who hate her,
And false sons in her pale,
Against both foe or traitor
She ever shall prevail.

Though with a scornful wonder
Men see her sore oppressed,
By schisms rent asunder,
By heresies distressed:
Yet saints their watch are keeping,
Their cry goes up, “How long?”
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song!

’Mid toil and tribulation,
And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation
Of peace forevermore;
Till, with the vision glorious,
Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won,
With all her sons and daughters
Who, by the Master’s hand
Led through the deathly waters,
Repose in Eden land.

O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we
Like them, the meek and lowly,
On high may dwell with Thee:
There, past the border mountains,
Where in sweet vales the Bride
With Thee by living fountains
Forever shall abide!

Doane

Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
weep o'er the erring one, lift up the fallen,
tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.

Refrain:
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying;
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.

Though they are slighting him, still he is waiting,
waiting the penitent child to receive;
plead with them earnestly, plead with them gently;
he will forgive if they only believe.
(Refrain)

Down in the human heart, crushed by the tempter,
feelings lie buried that grace can restore;
touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness,
chords that were broken will vibrate once more.
(Refrain)

Rescue the perishing, duty demands it;
strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;
back to the narrow way patiently win them;
tell the poor wanderer a Savior has died.
(Refrain)

HS42: Lifespring! HymnStories "What Child Is This?"

			<itunes:author>Steve Webb</itunes:author>

Our carol today is "What Child Is This."

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

What words of triumph and joy! Despite the melancholic melody, this song is a song of celebration of the birth of the King of kings.

After we hear about the background of this beautiful song, we'll hear an artist that I'm pleased to say that I personally introduced to podcasting. I found Cat Jahnke's music at garageband.com early in 2007, loved it, emailed her, told her about podcasting, and she responded by posting several of her songs at the Podsafe Music Network for podcasters to use on their shows. Now she's got this new CD of Christmas music, and I just love it. I think you'll enjoy her rendition of our carol today.

Today's Artists

Vocal rendition: Cat Jahnke "What Child Is This"

Joemy Wilson
"What Child Is This?" (mp3)
from "Gifts - Traditional Christmas Carols"
(Dargason Music)

Buy at iTunes Music Store
Buy at eMusic
Buy at Napster
Buy at Rhapsody
Buy at Amazon
Buy at GroupieTunes
More On This Album

Thanks!

A tip of the hat to HomeSchoolBlogAwards.com.

Today, we're going to hear the story behind the beautiful Christmas carol, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."

Written in 1849 by Edmund Hamilton Sears, a Unitarian minister, this was the second of two "twin" carols. (Listen to the show for more.)

Lyrics

"It Came Upon A Midnight Clear"

It came upon the midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth,
To touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, goodwill to men
From heavens all gracious King!"
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come,
With peaceful wings unfurled;
And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world:
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wing,
And ever o'er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing.

O ye beneath life's crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow;
Look now, for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing;
Oh rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing.

For lo! the days are hastening on,
By prophets seen of old,
When with the ever-circling years
Shall come the time foretold,
When the new heaven and earth shall own
The Prince of Peace, their King,
And the whole world send back the song
Which now the angels sing.

"Calm On The Listening Ear"

Calm on the listening ear of night
Come heaven’s melodious strains,
Where wild Judea stretches far
Her silver mantled plains.
Celestial choirs from courts above
Shed sacred glories there,
And angels, with their sparkling lyres,
Make music on the air.

Artists On This Show

London Fox Players & Tim Mather
"It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" (mp3)
from "20 Peaceful Christmas Favorites"
(Classic Fox Records)

Buy at Rhapsody
Buy at Napster
More On This Album

Benjamin

HS29: Lifespring! HymnStories "Crown Him With Many Crowns"

			<itunes:author>Steve Webb</itunes:author>

  As I record this, it is Easter week, considered by many to be the most holy of weeks in the Christian calendar. We celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the eternal son of God, who conquered death and thereby sealed Satan’s fate and made it possible for you and for me to receive forgiveness and eternal life. All of mankind has a true reason to celebrate, and the church has written many hymns to reflect that fact.

  Crown Him With Many Crowns
Music and Original Lyrics: Matthew Bridges
Additional Lyrics: Godfrey Thring

Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne.
Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity.

Crown Him the virgin’s Son, the God incarnate born,
Whose arm those crimson trophies won which now His brow adorn;
Fruit of the mystic rose, as of that rose the stem;
The root whence mercy ever flows, the Babe of Bethlehem.

Crown Him the Son of God, before the worlds began,
And ye who tread where He hath trod, crown Him the Son of Man;
Who every grief hath known that wrings the human breast,
And takes and bears them for His own, that all in Him may rest.

Crown Him the Lord of life, who triumphed over the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save.
His glories now we sing, Who died, and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.

Crown Him the Lord of peace, Whose power a scepter sways
From pole to pole, that wars may cease, and all be prayer and praise.
His reign shall know no end, and round His piercèd feet
Fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet.

Crown Him the Lord of love, behold His hands and side,
Those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified.
No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight,
But downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright.

Crown Him the Lord of Heaven, enthroned in worlds above,
Crown Him the King to Whom is given the wondrous name of Love.
Crown Him with many crowns, as thrones before Him fall;
Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, for He is King of all.

Crown Him the Lord of lords, who over all doth reign,
Who once on earth, the incarnate Word, for ransomed sinners slain,
Now lives in realms of light, where saints with angels sing
Their songs before Him day and night, their God, Redeemer, King.

Crown Him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time,
Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime.
All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou has died for me;
Thy praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity.

Additional first lines:

Crown Him with crowns of gold...
Crown Him the Lord of light...
Crown HIm the Lord of Heaven, One with the Father known...

The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

This hymn has come to be associatied with the American Thanksgiving holiday. It's a beautiful hymn of gratitude to God, and you will enjoy the wonderful rendition by Scott Wesley Brown.

Text: Folliot S. Pierpoint

1. For the beauty of the earth,
               for the glory of the skies,
               for the love which from our birth
               over and around us lies;
               Lord of all, to thee we raise
               this our hymn of grateful praise.

2. For the beauty of each hour
               of the day and of the night,
               hill and vale, and tree and flower,
               sun and moon, and stars of light;
               Lord of all, to thee we raise
               this our hymn of grateful praise.

3. For the joy of ear and eye,
               for the heart and mind's delight,
               for the mystic harmony,
               linking sense to sound and sight;
               Lord of all, to thee we raise
               this our hymn of grateful praise.

4. For the joy of human love,
               brother, sister, parent, child,
               friends on earth and friends above,
               for all gentle thoughts and mild;
               Lord of all, to thee we raise
               this our hymn of grateful praise.

5.

Today’s HymnStories is a bit different. Normally, using Robert J. Morgan’s book “Then Sings My Soul”, I tell you the background behind a popular Christian hymn and its author. Today, I’m not going to do that. Let me tell you why.

Today I went to a funeral. Please, don’t be too concerned. The woman who has passed from this life is most assuredly with her Savior. She lived a long life, and was well loved by her family. They will, of course miss her, but have the hope of seeing her again when there is a great reunion in Heaven.

At the funeral, one of the grandchildren, a woman by the name of Teresa Young, sang one of my favorite hymns, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee.” Theresa has a great voice, which you will hear on the podcast, because I recorded the service, and then later asked her if I could play this song for you...

— Continued on the podcast —

Just A Closer Walk With Thee
Author Unknown

Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

Through this world of toil and snares,
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.

Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

When my feeble life is o’er,
Time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o’er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing
1739
Lyrics: Charles Wesley
Music: Carl G. Gläser
Arr.: Heidi Henninger

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
'Tis music in the sinner's ears,
'Tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Savior come,
And leap, ye lame, for joy.

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

The backstory behind the 1680 hymn "Praise Ye The Lord - The Almighty".

There's a very interesting twist to this story that will surprise you!

Special thanks to Robert J. Morgan for the use of his book, "Then Sings My Soul".

Music:

Jilleen..."Praise To The Lord"

Praise To The Lord - The Almighty

Lyrics: Joachim Neander

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near; Praise Him in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, Who over all things so wondrously reigneth, Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth! Hast thou not seen how thy desires ever have been Granted in what He ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, Who hath fearfully, wondrously, made thee; Health hath vouchsafed and, when heedlessly falling, hath stayed thee. What need or grief ever hath failed of relief? Wings of His mercy did shade thee.

Praise to the Lord, Who doth prosper thy work and defend thee; Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, If with His love He befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord, Who, when tempests their warfare are waging, Who, when the elements madly around thee are raging, Biddeth them cease, turneth their fury to peace, Whirlwinds and waters assuaging.

Praise to the Lord, Who, when darkness of sin is abounding, Who, when the godless do triumph, all virtue confounding, Sheddeth His light, chaseth the horrors of night, Saints with His mercy surrounding.

Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in me adore Him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him. Let the Amen sound from His people again, Gladly for aye we adore Him.

"I Love To Tell The Story"

Music on this podcast is from "Sweet And Sacred", by Bill Neubauer.

Words: A. Katherine Hankey
Music: William G. Fischer

Lyrics

I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love.
I love to tell the story, because I know 'tis true;
It satisfies my longings as nothing else can do.

I love to tell the story, 'twill be my theme in glory,
To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story; more wonderful it seems
Than all the golden fancies of all our golden dreams.
I love to tell the story, it did so much for me;
And that is just the reason I tell it now to thee.

I love to tell the story, 'twill be my theme in glory,
To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story; 'tis pleasant to repeat what seems,
Each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet.
I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
The message of salvation from God's own holy Word.

I love to tell the story, 'twill be my theme in glory,
To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.
And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,
'Twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long.

I love to tell the story, 'twill be my theme in glory,
To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

Why another Lifespring! show? Today's church has largely left hymns behind. Too bad, because there is a great treasure to be found in this beautifully rich music. This show's goal is to bring a new appreciation for the historic hymns of the faith by telling the back stories, and bringing new life to the music.Listen to several episodes, and see if you don't find new enjoyment and new ways to worship God.In this first episode, "It Is Well With My Soul".
