We have an audio conversation with Jim Carroll, the founder of Savant. They the only company (that I'm aware of) that builds home automation systems on Apple hardware. We also officially announce the 2008 Christmas Party in Nashville with Geoff Smith. Last year, we did it virtually over Ustream. This year, we're inviting everyone to come to The Big Bang Bar (Geoff's dueling piano bar). We'll stream if we can on Ustream, and if we can't because of bandwidth, we'll record it and release later. If you can make it to Nashville on December 15th, it's going to be a blast!

The D.O.J. today gave the O.K. to a merger between XM Satellite Radio and Sirius.

South Park Studios is making every episode of South Park available for streaming on their Web site.

Quanta Computer and OoVoo are joining together to bring HD video chat to HDTV and they promise a product this year.

The Tape Project is a company that makes reel-to-reel tapes available to audiophiles for a lot of money. Here's the Tape Project catalog.

Of all my t-shirts, none are currently knife-proof. My Oyster Shucking video suggests that it could be a potential problem. Nihon Uni T-Shirts ARE knife proof to an extent, but they cost $500 each and do not protect against stabs.

Qik.com sent a couple IOGear GearJuice mobile Pocket Power chargers so I can always "go live" when I'm out on The Big Trip. Each one will charge a mobile phone up to 3 times before it needs to be charged.

The MiniStation Turbo USB from Buffalo Technology is the smallest 500GB, 5400 RPM USB hard drive I've ever seen.

Revolabs has a wireless USB mic designed for VoIP and Podcasting. The charging base stays plugged into your PC or Mac and the mic clips to your shirt so you can walk around the room.

Crgslst is a service that allows location-free search from Craigslist, and Acer announced their new Gem Stone Blue line of notebooks.

Pearing Systems might be building a computer into a side table. It's a neat idea and they way they're dealing with access to components is ingenious. It pops right out of the box.

The USB Typing Speedometer reminds me of my mom. It measures typing speeds up to 260 WPM.

Penguin Books will soon be releasing DRM free Audiobooks. Penguin CEO, Marjorie Scardino seems to get what those of us in the tech world have been saying about DRM.

It creates the fastest route to a destination based on average driving speeds rather than posted speed limits. Intel's smallest, lowest power processor is called Atom and it's designed for mobile Internet devices. The RoadRunner neckset is the strangest looking gadget of the day. Vara Software's ScreenFlow is the best screen capture application we've ever used. And it's snowing in Dallas!!!

I switched to Mac with the advent of the Mac Mini. We've followed the same pattern from the beginning. We buy a desktop and then the notebook most similar in specs and performance to the desktop. After the Mac Mini, we added an iBook (currently on Ebay). Before we started GeekBrief.TV, we got an iMac G5. The notebook we paired with the iMac was a MacBook. When we went pro with the podcast, we went pro with the Mac Pro. We added to that a MacBook Pro and then another. The MacBook Air was the first Mac that's come out that dosn't fit our growth pattern. It's the first Mac since we switched that I can easily live without, so I didn't plan to do a review.

My friend, Mark Taylor (taylormark.com) bought one and dedicated it to our Big Trip fundraising effort, so I've played with it for three days, reviewed it and put it on Ebay.

Most people I'm around are always looking for more power in a computer. We want fast hard drives, fast processors and fast RAM. We'll sacrifice our desire to have a notebook that runs cool, and I'll live with the machine being heavy. Not everyone shares the mission of a power user, and it is those people that will get the most out of a MacBook Air.

It's the ultimate writer's computer. It's size doesn't compromise it's quality. It's solid and well balanced. It doesn't want to fall or lean in any direction. It is perfect for online activity and really any job where the primary requirement is the production or consumption of text and pictures. It isn't good for video and I really don't believe Apple meant it to be. I could watch video in iTunes, some HD videos I tried downloading to watch in Quicktime just gave me a spinning beach ball. I also wasn't able to watch a remote DVD in another machine with out getting a beach ball.

The MacBook Air is like a conceptual design brought to market. Apple made something that most companies would only design to suggest what a machine might be like sometime in the future. That's one of the reasons I'm such an Apple fan.

The MacBook Air isn't for me or anyone who aims to produce video, but for anyone else looking for portability, it's definitely worth a look.

Before Cali headed off to the vet this morning to find out what is wrong with our Chihuahua's back leg, we shot Brief 320 about something new from Microsoft Research called the WorldWide Telescope. When it's released this Spring it will give us the ability to virtual explore the Universe just like Google Earth lets us explore our planet. Imagery is displayed in the same context as you would experience it if you could fly from place to place in a space ship. Robert Scoble saw it in action a few weeks ago and he says it made him cry.

The WorldWide Telescope is dedicated to Microsoft researcher, Jim Gray, and it was introduced at this year's TED conference by Roy Gould. We show a few clips on Brief 320. You can download the presentation in it's entirety from TED.com.

BTW, I shot this episode at 24 fps rather than 60. Does anyone notice a difference?

UPDATE: Our Chihuahua's knee is out of it's socket. It's an $800 surgery.

Just as expected, Apple announced upgrades to MacBooks and MacBook Pros today. Here's a link to a video about stuff we're selling on eBay. Multitouch works on Google Maps, even if you have the old MacBook Pro. Sean Carruthers from Lab Rats joins me to talk about the iAno. Botanicalls Twitter is a D.I.Y. project that hooks your house plant up with it's very own Twitter feed. And finally, I-Touch is a biometric garaged door opener that supports up to 30 fingers.

I start with a review of the N-Gage gaming platform which is soon to be available on the following Nokia phones: N81, N82, N93, N93i, N95, N95 8GB, N96, N78, N95 NAM. I get the sense that N-Gage is about bringing a much richer gaming experience than we seen before on a phone. The graphics are impressive and the games I tried were challenging.

Unfortunately Sharper Image filed for bankruptcy. Earth Class Mail is a service that let's you avoid dealing with paper mail if you'd rather go 100% digital. HP will soon have an Ultra Mobile PC that you can get with either Linux or Windows installed.

It hardly feels like news, but Toshiba decided they'll be out of the HD DVD business by the end of March. Apple reduced the price of the iPod Shuffle to $49 and introduced a 2GB version for $69. Verizon and AT&T both announced unlimited voice plans for $99 before we shot this Brief and then T-Mobile followed suit while we were shooting. It feels like we've said this before, but Chumby is finally for sale.

Jott is one of my favorite productivity apps. WakerUpper takes the help in the opposite direction and sends reminders to your phone at specified times. Planning for our year-long road trip we came across the Tourmaster T45G. It has a king size Murphy bed that folds up to turn the master bedroom into a fully equipped home theater.

XamBox may be the single best intermediary device between analog and digital I've ever seen. Paper documents, receipts and business cards are scanned in and dropped in a box. Software converts the paper to PDFs and catalogs in what order the hard copies are stored in the box. When the box is full, you label it, seal it and store it. If you need the document again, the software will tell you exactly where to look, or you can just print a fresh copy.

Ziszor! (with an exclamation point like Yahoo!), is a portable handheld shredder that shreds up to 5 layers of paper at a time. I'm thinking about a year on the road so small and portable is on my mind.

Litepanels Micro is a consumer version of what the pros use for lighting faces. It's LED so it doesn't use much energy and it doesn't put off much heat. It fits on a small DV camera and runs on four AA batteries.

There is a new portable version of Guitar Hero that will be released next month.

Going through boxes of stuff to sell on eBay, I came across our very first digital camera. It's a Vivitar ViviCam 3000. It shoots .77 Megapixel images and has 1 MB of internal storage and I want your suggestions for what I should do with it.

Sometimes Tech is just one big soap opera. Microsoft offers to purchase Yahoo! and Yahoo! says, "That's all you think I'm worth? You've got to be kidding. Anyway, I'm in love with AOL." Popular blogger Mathew Ingram called the possible Yahoo! and AOL marriage "Desperation Squared." Then Starbucks dumped T-Mobile to join forces with AT&T. The Starbucks/AT&T joint venture brings AT&T broadband customers free WiFi in every Starbucks. That's why, as much as possible, I stick to gadget news. John Biggs isn't buying into Modu's new phone idea. After talking through the story, I think I get his point. Nokia's N96 does everything the N95 does, but it does it a little bit better. Bloggers started getting their hands on very early Android prototypes. Dell has a new wireless USB option available on several notebooks.

I've decided to pursue a long-term goal of traveling around the U.S. for a year in an RV. That quest makes me notice stuff like the NAVIsurfer II. It's a fully functional PC that fits in a single DIN slot. DLO has a TDMA shielded speaker system for iPhone. It's about time. Google Docs now has a forms application that sends data to Google Spreadsheets. Unfortunately, you have to invite people to enter data into the form by sending them email. Today was a technical disaster. Everything seemed to break, and I think it all started with the news that Angelina Jolie said she doesn't know how to turn on a computer. I'm participating in the Qik alpha test. Qik.com makes it possible to stream quality video to the Web from a mobile phone. It's simply amazing. My Qik streams are connected to my Twitter feed. Anytime I'm on, Qik will tweet for me. Imagine if I had it when I met the Woz. Micropod SE is a quite speaker. Fred thought different about salt and pepper shakers and iPod earbuds. SuperDuper is awesome for Mac users. It keeps you safe with a bootable clone of your system disk. I finish up with JoikuSpot. It's an application that turns your S60 phone into a mobile WLAN hotspot. Oh, and then I declared email bankruptcy.

Wednesday we spent the day traveling to Washington, DC, so we saved a great conversation I had at Macworld with Alex Lindsay from Pixel Corps. Pixel Corps is an old fashioned guild done in a new media way. It's a group of creative people who work in digital, and it's designed to provide training, job referrals and inspiration. I get a lot of questions from people interested in working in new media, so I thought a conversation with Alex would be useful.

This happened at the very end of Macworld, and I was exhausted. You might not notice from the interview, but if you stick around for the bloopers, you'll see just how much.

We've made our way through most of our Macworld footage and now we're back with fresh news about gadgets and tech. Nokia is planning to purchase Trolltech, a software company that could presumably extend the utility of Nokia hardware. PMA is the annual show dedicated to cool photo gear. One of the early announcements from PMA is that Lensbaby Lenses are now available for motion picture cameras. We're trying out the Lensbaby that works with or Nikon D40, and so far, it's a lot of fun. Iterasi will soon give us a better, more permanent way to bookmark. I started Brief 288 talking about Rovio, a home exploration and telepresence robot, but the photo we showed, we think is called "Mr. Personality." Samsung had a couple cool announcements. The HT-X715 5.1 home theater-in-a-box includes Bluetooth for streaming audio from a phone or other Bluetooth audio source. The SyncMaster 2263DX is the perfect monitor for Adobe users. Oh Gizmo live blogged the Bill Gates keynote and snapped a photo of some interesting looking phone thing. Griffin announced a dock for charging FOUR iPods at a time and the availability of individual Evolve wireless speakers. Manfrotto's 585 MODOSTEADY Three-in-One brings stabilization to moms and dads who own camcorders. Now, we're off to Vegas.

CES has started so I'm working on a Sunday. I start Brief 287 with my thoughts about Warner Bros. breaking up with HD DVD. The USB Missile Launcher has been updated with a Webcam, so if you're needing someone shoot foam missiles at you, Brando's making it possible. I'm looking forward to CrunchGear's live coverage of the Bill Gates keynote. They have a liveblogging secret weapon that I can't wait to see in action. Bug Labs announced special early adopter pricing. Some of The Goonies are available as action figures. It's the first time I've ever wanted to buy an action figure. Video Transfer from Pinnacle was my favorite CES announcement at the time we shot this. That's changed already, of course. I'll be in Vegas Tuesday and back home Wednesday. I'll be using Twitter for breaking news through CES and Macworld.

There are Briefs that feel like...meh...some I really like. This is one I really like. I start with the Belkin RockStar headphone hub that lets you share your out with up to four other listeners. I had to cover the PRO-HD Slingbox. That was a huge story today. I'd be more likely to get one to use on my home network than to try and sling across the world. Paul Miller at Engadget wrote a brilliant line about the Dell Crystal LCD display that's actually for sale now. Sennheiser adopted Kleer wireless audio technology for possibly the best wireless earphones available yet. I also end with a segment I'm calling, "Look what this guy did!" In this edition I show how Cynergy Labs created a multi touch interface (sans the touch) using a Wiimote. It's brilliant.

HP is announcing that all of their TVs will come with MediaSmart technology to stream photos, video and music from storage on your home network. Their new MediaSmart Receiver will turn any TV into a network connected TV. The Dell Crystal LCD Monitor will begin shipping soon and the Morphie Juice Pack doubles the battery life of your iPhone.

John Biggs is right. 2007 was a dead year for gadgets. My Top 10 Gadget List for 2007 has some of my lifetime favorite innovations, but it would be a major challenge for me to create a list for '07 that extends much further beyond 10. At any rate, my top 10 is pretty predictable for regular GBTV viewers because it's stuff I talked about over and over throughout the year.

Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 Media Edition (I had to take a coffee break after typing that), includes an application called Expression Media (formerly iView). It's an application that visually catalogs over 120 file formats and keeps up with where media assets are stored, even if those assets are offline, say on a DVD. I'm really excited to learn more about Expression. It's already available for XP and Vista users, so I'd like to hear from anyone who is using it.

I'm a Mac addict...a Mac fanatic. It's all because I love simple, elegant design. I love Mac for the same reason I love Model One radios and Wee Houses. They're pure and perfect. It's something PC companies have missed design after design, until Gateway announced the ONE. It the first and only PC that is every bit as beautiful as a Mac. One Brief 279, I unboxed mine and set it up. In order to get this out quickly, I tested the Web cam and built in audio quality. I'll be using it more throughout the holidays and I'm sure I'll have more to add then, but for now my only complaints are the Wintel stickers on the front and Vista. Beyond that, it's the most beautiful Windows PC ever built, and the best Windows setup experience I've ever had.

Since I started the holiday season, I've wanted to do a robot Brief, but I'm disappointed in robotics right now. There are some fun robots available and there are some practical robots available, but it seems like we're a long, long way from the robots of our dreams. I've had a Roomba for more than a year. On hardwood floors it works pretty well. On carpet, though, it's too much work to clean it. I'd rather use a Dyson. The Pleo, though seems like a lot of fun. I'd LOVE to watch how my chihuahuas respond to one. The PLEN Desktop Hobby Robot looks extremely elegant in the videos I've seen. They're only selling 50 of them and the price is high. This Brief is meant to be extra jolly because it's all about pet gadgets, but I was a little stressed when we shot it so I seem a little off my game. I start with a Wireless Doorbell Mat that alerts humans when a pet wants to go outside or come back in. iSeePet360 is a Webcam built into a dog feeder that can be controlled over the Internet, but it's only available in Japan. We're swinging into holiday gadget giving season by leaving our comfort zone and talking about cool tools for this year's yule. The first one I saw on, of all things, a TV commercial. It's called the Accu Mark Gecko Grip Level and it's designed to help us hang art and shelving straight without a hassle. Then we move on to one that could work as a stocking stuffer. The Magnetic Finger keeps your screws, nails, nuts and bolts right where you need them, when you need them.

The Oval Walking Light is an obvious good idea. It sends bright LED light in two directions--to the front and down at your feet. I didn't say it in the show because I've been asked not to, but...very nice! If you're a geek who takes road trips you have to have a power inverter. The Cupholder Power Converter is a great design. We also featured a motorized lightbulb changer and a multi-tool device built in to a key. Even though it isn't my normal fare, it was a fun show.

A PR agency contacted me and offered to send some products from a gadget company they represent. All of the gadgets are fun USB toys, so I thought it would make a great stocking stuffer show. If you're going to stuff a stocking with a USB gadget, I think you have to stick some kind of iPod in it. My recomendation this year is the Nano. On this brief, I also talk about Brando's USB charged book light. I just might be the most practical thing Brando ever made. The USB Putt Returner takes mini golf to a new extreme and makes the phrase, "six tiny balls" a new Christmas tradition. The company that inspired this Brief is boynq.com. They have a retractable cable USB hub called Haspel. They have a USB lamp called D'Light. They have a USB fan called Mistral, and my favorite is their multi card reader called Toastit. It's cute and it looks like a toaster.

EveryScape is creating virtual city tours that take inside real stores, hotels, museums and restaurants. I give you an EveryScape look at my old stomping grounds on South Beach in Miami. I finally found a solar charging bag that doesn't have a sucky design. It's called the Noon Solar Logan Bag. I'm trying out a Nokia N810, but I'm not ready to share. The Taguchi Supper Sound System is a love it or hate it kind of thing. It wouldn't be in a Brief if I didn't love it. Today's Brief is half about software and half a conversation the Tim Ferriss, author of the best-selling book, The 4-Hour Work Week. We start with a new update for Zoho Writer that makes it possible to now edit documents off-line. There's a Zoho screencast explaining how it works here. I get a ton of email from EyeTV users. EyeTV brings an amazing DVR experience to the Mac. Remote Buddy is an application that allows EyeTV users to customize their remote controls. In my South by Southwest packet, there was a little flyer offering bloggers a review copy of a book called The 4-Hour Work Week. I filled out the form, got the book and started reading it. It's all about the good, the bad, and the ugly, also known as the function, the feel and the look. I have lots of criticism for the hardware, and a little bit about the software, but I love reading on the Kindle. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being a :CueCat barcode reader and 10 being an iPhone, I give Kindle a seven. It's a first generation device with plenty of room for improvement, but for early adopters who love books and Amazon.com, the negatives are easily tolerated. Now, Amazon, bring on version two!

One of the cool experiment features of Kindle is something called "Ask Kindle NowNow" and it rocks. At the time we shot, I hadn't gotten an answer to the question I asked. By upload time, I received a very thorough and impressive answer. I just might be about to recoup my investment in the reader by using NowNow. You'll have to watch to know what I'm talking about.

Sony has a new line of high-end headphones and they've made the brilliant decision to enlist my help in spreading the message. We recorded this brief little review of Leopard Sunday and I pointed out the two features we think of as life-changers, at least as far as work-flows go. The first is cover-flow. Being able to browse through every kind of document using cover-flow makes organizing files on a Mac easier than ever. Unless you're made of hard drives, you have to delete files. I typically put that off until I'm hurting for space. It's fast and fun to browse through a folder using cover flow and I used the font folder as an example on this Brief. As pretty as foreign-language fonts are to look at, I don't use them, but because they're not always named in a way that identifies what they are, I don't end up deleting them. With cover flow, it was a breeze to sweep out the fonts I won't use, and now I won't have to scroll through them when I'm looking for a font I want to use.

The other life-changer is a simple little feature called Quick Look. Select any file in finder, hit the space bar and you get a beautiful view of the file whether it's audio, video, a photo or a document.

One of the consistent things I'm reading in Leopard reviews is about how Leopard is packed with little features that make life easier. One I just found is when you save a file, the dialog box offers you a list of recent places. It's saved me so much time already.

I love what Chris Pirillo is doing with live.pirillo.com. I asked if I could get a copy of the template. His team has been working to help me get it up and running at GBTVlive.com. That's going to be a fun space for behind-the-scenes happenings at the GBTV studio.

We released the first Brief December 23rd, 2005. A month later during the State of the Union Address, I thought it would be fun to do an annual State of Gadgetry Address. This is the first one.

There have been five devices that really blew me away in the last year: The iPhone, Drobo, the Gateway ONE, Nintendo Wii and Evolve all have done something unique in the market. I hope that in the next year we start to see a move away from incremental improvements in functionality and cosmetics. I want to see more leaps forward in usability, design and simplicity.

We're in Chandler, Arizona for a meeting with some peeps from Intel. They flew us out a day early so we could finally go to the Grand Canyon.

We didn't plan to do a meetup because our time here is short, but then we saw an In-N-Out Burger and impromptu was written all over it. We don't know exactly what time we'll get back from the Grand Canyon, so if anyone's interested in coming, you'll have to follow me either on Twitter or Pownce for a heads up on the time. I'll tweet or pownce when we're passing through Flagstaff. That'll give you about 2 1/2 hours notice.

They're doing a lot of tests to see what's going on with my hands, feet, knees and elbows. I'm taking medication to deal with the itchiness, but it keeps me knocked out most of the time. SUCCESS! Neal finally got out-of-studio video he's happy with! We shot Brief 217 and 218 on Sauvie Island just outside of Portland. It's one of my favorite places we've been because of all the lush farms. Midwestern farms tend to look washed out when we're driving by on an Interstate. The farms on Sauvie Island, we think because of the lighting created by so much cloud activity, look so healthy and idyllic. It's just a cool place, if you like that kind of thing.

Sooo...PodShow is trying an experiment with major advertisers where they give them a little tiny taste of what supporting podcasts can do for their brands. We like the idea and so we agreed to do the test with Audible.com/geekbrief on three episodes and kmart.com on this episode. We're all just figuring this stuff out as we go.

The premise of this brief is that Kmart, in addition to advertising dollars provided us with $200 to shop for back-to-school gadgets. We thought it would be cool and interesting to pass that on to our intern, William, because he's a student. For students...heck, for everybody, getting free stuff is usually a good thing.

This is maybe the fifth episode where we "sold" the whole show to a sponsor. When we do that, we work extra hard to create an interesting story so the people who matter most, you guys, are entertained.

With that in mind, we don't think we like the idea of selling a whole show to promote one sponsor because we end up feeling like an infomercial. Again, we're just figuring this out as we go.

We think this episode and its premise is cute. They idea that we're outfitting our intern with $200 worth of gear for school is cool, but we're not sure it fits with our desire to first and foremost inform and entertain all of you who watch The Brief. We say this over and over...we're in this to make you smile, and if we're really lucky, we'll make you laugh. That's what really matters to us.

Your feedback on this episode is very much appreciated. If we do stuff like this in the future, it will be the exception and not the rule. I'm just not sure we should do it at all, but on the other hand, I'm always happy when a company decides to throw it's support in the Podcasting space and Kmart.com should be appreciated for giving it a try.

Gnomedex is an annual technical conference, coordinated by Lockergnome founder Chris Pirillo & his wife Ponzi Pirillo, that began in late 2001. Neal and I were invited to speak at Gnomedex 7.0. It was my very first time to speak in public and Gnomedex is known as a tough crowd. We're working on releasing a video of our talk as soon as we can.

Controversy was the theme on day one. The conference started off with a speech by Robert Steele, a former spy who can't find much to like about the United States. Steele's speech was extremely entertaining, but it was even better because of the conversation taking place on Twitter. Few people agreed with much of what Steele had to say, but most of us thought it was a fun ride.

The day ended with, what I thought was a great presentation from Jason Calacanis about his new project Mahalo. It's a search engine governed by editors who strip out SPAM and uninformative results. It was a nostalgic speech that reminded me of the early days of the public Internet when search results were not only relevant, but also informative. Since Jason was talking about how SPAM is polluting the Internet, some of the old-timers didn't like that he was talking about his commercial project.

Dave Winer shouted from the back row that Calacanis was guilty of conference SPAM. The controversy continued over the next 24 hours on the Web.

I spent today at the studios of The Lab with Leo Laporte, a Canadian and Australian TV show. I was a guest and did segments about Drobo, the N800, a DIY Gadget Organizer, and RSS Feeds. I talked to Leo at the end of the day for GeekBrief.TV. We talk about the new format for The Lab, and the possibility of getting the show on air in the US. We also talked about how traditional media doesn't respect people's understanding and love of technology. That's why smart people subscribe to netcasts! ;)

I have to apologize for the length of this piece. PodShow asked me to promote Port City PD, which is a violent cop drama podcast. It's impressive to the extent that they're doing it on what I assume is a very low budget, but I've been trying to get them to sign Ricky Montalvo from The Daily Geek TV for weeks. It's a much better show because it's smart, and well done. It reminds me of This American Life, and what's at the top of the iTunes chart? This American Life. So you guys bore the brunt of my frustration. It was a long day, but hopefully I was entertaining. Port City PD
