an audio experiment from Macedonia, creator of Radio BSOTS. fueled primarily by endless amounts of sarcasm and cynicism, this show reveals him for what he truly is: a reluctant disciple for Christ who wears his halo cocked over one eye, as well as a prematurely old coot-in-training, throwing crap out of his third floor attic apartment window at passing cars that drive down his street too fast. personal stories, writings, and rants aplenty, focusing on pop culture, social phenomena, and anything else that happens to fall out of his mouth. musically the show is more moody and brash in nature, including some selections that might be out of place on Radio BSOTS. this can include (but not limited to) hip-hop, rock, spoken word, electronic, and avant-garde material. basically, it's the sound of a person's sanity coming to pieces. and knowing the basic nature of people, some of you probably get off on that sort of thing, so don't front. drop in where you fit in...and tune in. chances are the old coot will run his yap whether you show up or not...

ESM 013 - my collect phone call to GOD...

 <itunes:author>Jason Randall Smith</itunes:author>

originally, this monologue was going to be the intro to a new episode, but then i thought it worked fine on its own, especially with a song or two as bookends. not all of my conversations with GOD are like this, but sometimes they can be. certainly someone will consider this blasphemous, but in order for GOD to be tangible for everyday people, one would think that GOD should be approachable. the Creator of the heavens and the earth...approachable? why not?

i'm a Christian...one whose mind, body, and spirit is continually under construction. a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is an intimate one, which means at times God's going to get into your business and make you uncomfortable. it's all about getting you out of your comfort zone. so if that's the case, i have to think that an informal convo like the one presented is fair game. one should be able to worship GOD and fear Him due to the fact that He's awesome, but at the same time be able to confide in Him like you would your best friend. i believe that GOD wants that...but that's just me.

along with a cut from Damien Shingleton, there are two selections from Heaven's Radio, a DJ premium from wfmu a few years back. if you're into vintage gospel, i encourage you to download the whole thing - very inspirational and moving.

ESM 013 - my collect phone call to GOD...
transmitting from mount vernon, new york
thirteen minutes, fifty-nine seconds
NEW VOICE MAIL LINE: 206-339-8732

00:00 - reverend cj davis and the temple of resurrection - prayer line
01:18 - my collect phone call to GOD...
09:05 - damien shingleton - you are better than me
12:37 - reverend victor holley - radio broadcast excerpt

other key info:
radio bsots: official homepage and podshow domain
follow macedonia on twitter
sinner's crossroads radio program on wfmu

by the time you hear this, simone will be seven months old. this show ended up under the editing knife for an extended session. that's not the way i like to do things when it comes to the sideshow. i like to just record it and that's it. but structurally it didn't work in the order that it was recorded, plus it was too damn long. the fat needed to be trimmed. hopefully the voiceovers are somewhat entertaining. on the plus side, there's some great music featured on this episode.

listen closely for simone - she'll be crying in the background. and my lovely wife beth makes a cameo appearance as well...

ESM 008 - still here...
transmitting from mount vernon, ny, usa
total time: forty-four minutes, six seconds

00:00 / respect due...
02:33 /in black and white (phrase no. 1)...
06:08 / core rhythm - live from baghdad
11:17 / simone and the valentine's day faceplant...
17:15 / fishbone - faceplant scorpion backpinch
22:05 / blackpeople.podshow.com
25:22 / youngblood brass band - nuclear summer
32:12 / infant gas attacks and the cards my wife has been dealt...
37:41 / dälek*classical homicide (get the MP3 here)

other key info:
radio bsots: official website and podshow domain
jersey todd show - episode no. 79
jason hosting wfmu's listener hour - march 3, 2007
drop squad (the movie)

ESM005 - memoirs of a reluctant disciple (revisited)

this episode revisits content originally made for the Radio BSOTS podcast, but it was never
a part of the feed. it was only available via direct download. it was posted to the site late june of this year. this show
foreshadowed the possibility of creating another show, mainly because it was vastly different from the usual BSOTS show. it was
personal, it was more talk than music...honestly, it kinda felt out of place.

and now that this show is here, i figured that it was as good a time as any to revisit this show. it is largely based on some earlier blog entries of mine, which you can find here.

the repeated refrain in mangomad's "so pure" pretty much sums up this show: "i need to wash away my sins / i need to stop before i begin." may as well be the story of my life...

ESM 005 - memoirs of a reluctant disciple (revisited)
transmitting from mount vernon, new york, usa
thirty-six minutes and some change...

00:00 / intro (or "how the shouting matches started...")

02:40 / secret of the saints no. 481

05:37 / john oswald*power {buy it at emusic}

09:07 / one step at a time...

13:23 / idmonster*the storm before the calm {download entire ep for free at notype.com}

16:15 / lead me not into temptation...

22:09 / mangomad*so pure

27:19 / the story of my life (i wanted to tell her...)

31:43 / geeez n' gosh*nobody knows/we call on him {buy it at emusic}
