Well..right after I had uploaded the Intro for the podcast , the ice storm of 12.11.08 , just got worse and worse…and around 2 am on that Friday morning, our power went out. The dogs ( Bennie and Molly) were going crazy , because the branches snapping under the weight of the ice sounded like gunshots ….so we were essentially up from 2 until sunrise ….when the sun did come up, it wasn’t good …there were trees bent or broken everywhere. At the beginning of our drive way , a tree we originally were going to pay for to be cut down had broken and was laying on a power line across our street. So no one could get in or out of our street. www.musicandotherthings/blogspot.com There are only 5 houses on our street, which probably runs almost a mile long (this little fact comes into play later in this story)…The guy who lives next to me, came down , with a huge chainsaw and chopped the tree apart and the powerline bounced back..it was stretched, but hadn’t broken….I called into work and tried to figure out what to do ….I had no power, so no internet or tv, and no heat or hot water .We did have water. We have an artesian well, which I am told produces enough water pressure, where we got a slow dribble of water out of the faucet, this also meant that our toilet worked. I think if we had no water, we probably we have gone to a hotel, and boarded the dogs. I found our battery powered radio and tried to figure what was going on. Basically, the worse ice storm in 30 years had just come through and 90 % of people who have Public Service of New Hampshire as their power supplier, did not have power. There was no time table for when we would get power back. I talked to one of the local town guys that Friday and he said it would be 2 – 3 days …I guess for 3 days we would be ok …WE have a wood stove and plenty of wood, and the propane heater in the bedroom was working. My wifes mom lives about a half hour away, so we could shower and do some laundry. Well Monday came and went and still no power… We had found out that since I lived on a dead end street, in a small town ( only 900 people) and my street only had 5 houses, we would be the last ones to have power restored. So it was cold nights, lots of no baked dinners( the gas stove worked, but the oven did not) , and we went through probably a months worth of wood in 11 days. We kept the wood stove at full blast all the time so the pipes wouldn’t freeze and would have been in even worse shape that we were.…we boiled water and filled the tub so we could bathe ..it was not a fun happy time …finally on 12.22.08 in the afternoon 3 power trucks( from Pennsylvania) showed up on our street and it took them about an hour and a half to fix the problem…and by 4 pm that day , power was back.  So that is why the podcasts did not go out on time :+)

Thanks for downloading and reading. Sorry about the wait for this podcast, but the real world got in the way this time. Been working straight out at my day job, and my house is undergoing some renovation, and the Red Sox almost making it to the World Series, has taken a huge amount of normal recording time …..!!!

Originally this podcast was going to be a very dark sounding type of show, with a bunch of ‘found sounds’ that I’ve been capturing using my new zoom H2 recorder…as I started that piece of music, I kept going back to a folder on my hard drive, just labeled ‘Piano’.

I had been working on for almost a year a few short pieces, of just a little synth and mostly piano. The same time as I’m working on the music a few things happened. My cat of almost 19 years, Amy passed away. This was the latest in a series of passings of animals in my life. 3 or so years ago, my wifes dog Woody passed away at the age of 13, Her cat Familiar passed away very suddenly this year and her parents dog Shadow, also passed. This was bookended by the passing of my cousin Cheryl 5 years ago, of cancer and the passing about a month ago of Debbie, the wife of a good friend of mine also to cancer. The more I thought about all of the lives moving on, it didn’t seem right to be doing the podcasts with the found sounds, and I kept opening and working in the Piano folder. Once I had decided to change the direction of the podcast, things seemed to flow a little smoother.

 There are 3 sections of this Piece of music. The first piece ‘Sorrow’ runs about ten minutes long.  This was written first almost 6 months ago, maybe even longer..’Loss’ is the middle bridge piece, which comes in at about 30 minutes in length and was the last piece written. ‘Remembrance’ is a companion piece to ‘Sorrow’ and runs about 10 minutes or so ..All 3 songs blend together. I hope you enjoy them.

Sorryfor the wait, but a lot to tell. First the podcast. I got the name of thePodcast ' Dark Energy ' from a set of pictures I saw on the website for theHubble Telescope. I have attached one of the images from the site as the artworkfor this podcast. If you can't see the artwork, you can go to PODSHOW.com/darkambientand find the images for all of the podcasts.

Thispodcast is not an easy listen. There are parts where it seems like the music onthe edge of just falling apart, and there are passages where it's just a quietlayer of sounds. I think it's worth the time and energy, and I hope you enjoyit.

Thereason this took so long is that I was working on another project while doingthis podcast. I'm very happy to say that I have my first Ambient CD available.It's called 'Dark Energy 1 - Music for Relaxation and Meditation' Just what theworld needs..another meditation cd. Well when i looked for relaxation CD's tolisten to myself, it always seemed like there was too much music or sounds ofnature on the CD’s or downloads I found. The music just wasn't well, relaxing.So I took it upon myself to make my own soundscape. This CD is about as relaxingas it can be, without there being just no music at all!!! Welcome to Dark Ambient # 12 ‘ Awakening’ ..i’m right on schedule with my self imposed 30-45 day window for getting the podcast uploaded.  This one is actually a CD I made for a spa night that was happening near where I live. I made about 30 cd’s to give away to people who attended….I did a little re-editing so all the songs would be seamless.  Some of these songs were used on my first podcast ‘Northeast Ambient’, but since that is not available anymore, I feel ok re-using some of these songs ….plus there is a brand new song tacked on at the end called Earth Ambient Vol 1. The entire podcast runs about an hour and ten minutes or so. The track listing is

This one took a little while longer than i had anticipated, but it came out very smooth and listenable. Great for looping in the background or falling asleep to. I've been listening to this soundscape, when i've been taking my dog for walks down to the pond near our house and it seems to become a part of the surroundings, like you almost don't realize that there is msuic playing, it just sort of becomes part of that experience of looking at the pond and sun rising or setting, and the stillness of moment.
