News

Coffee farmers in Jamaica are less than happy right now. Wallenford Coffee Factory in St. Andrew missed the deadline to pay them for last years crop and have not announced when they plan to pay up. Derrick Simon of the Coffee Farmers Association says this could be signaling the end of the industry there. The factory is moving ahead with plans to purchase the current years crop even though they haven't paid for last years. This is of great concern to the farmers. The Wallenford Coffee Factory has made no public comment on the situation. http://www.radiojamaica.com/content/view/10471/26/

Coffee from Columbia came to a grinding halt this week as truck drivers in the country went on strike. The Association of Columbia Coffee Exporters say the flow of coffee will not be interrupted unless the strike lasts eight days or more. At issue, according to the truck drivers, is the lack of enforcement of a deal reached last month concerning the improvement of freight payment rates and other conditions. Columbia is the world's third biggest coffee exporter. Officials for the government say talks are making progress but the truckers say they have no end in sight for their strike. http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/feedarticle/7694971

There may be rough times at other coffee giants, but Peet's Coffee and Tea, Inc. has reason to rejoice. They announced earnings for the last fiscal quarter and the news is good. Revenues are up 16.6% from the same period last year. "We're very pleased with our progress this quarter which was driven by strong, profitable growth in our grocery and other wholesale businesses, and improved operating efficiencies across the Company," said Patrick O'Dea, president and chief executive officer of Peet's Coffee & Tea, Inc. http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/peets-coffee--tea-inc/story.aspx?guid=%7B4C310DE1-8EFF-44C3-872E-8EA29EC88A71%7D&dist=hppr

More good news from Peet's: their new state of the art roasting facility in Alameda, California has been LEED Gold certified by the US Green Building Council. This is the first LEED certified roastery in the United States and the first for the City of Alameda. Peet's made many positive changes to achieve the LEED Gold certification, including better facilities for employees like larger work spaces, a fitness room, and showers, using natural light and new technology to reduce energy usage by 40%, redesigned the way they recover heat during the roasting process so they are now using 85% less gas than before...that's right, 85% less!...and they are located close to public transportation and give preferential parking places to alternative and hybrid fuel vehicles and bicycles. http://tinyurl.com/68zxxq

From the green building to the Green Mountain...Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, that is. The Vermont based company announced this week that they have purchased 31 acres in Knoxville, Tennessee where they plan to make their coffee products. No word on how many jobs this will create, but it certainly is good news for the local economy. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters are well known for the single cup brewing systems and supporting products like the Kuerig machine. http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/aug/01/green-mountain-buys-east-knox-site-coffee-plant/

Java without the religion? That's what a Santa Cruz, California church is saying about their new coffee house. Adjacent to Vintage Faith Church, the coffee house is owned and operated by the church but promises an atmosphere where coffee lovers and students can come to hang out, drink coffee, surf the web, enjoy live music, and take in exhibits from local artists. The cafe used to only be open on Sunday for churchgoers, but the recent renovations and reopening are an outreach to the community that appears to be receiving a warm reception. Churches with real vision will take note of this example. http://www.mercurynews.com/centralcoast/ci_10069322

Find for the show

Coffee bean earrings from hilarykay on etsy.com - http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_gallery_2&listing_id=13922101

News

In Portland, Oregon, at least one of county government will soon vote on whether big coffee chain stores will be required to post health information like calories on the menu or on signs that are easy for patrons to see and read. In order to qualify for this extra special treatment, a coffee shop must have at least 15 stores nationwide. Other cities in the country including New York and San Francisco have adopted similar ordinances. If approved, the requirement will go into effect in early 2009. http://www.kptv.com/news/16998718/detail.html#-

According to the Chicago Tribune, "four people were hospitalized in good condition" (how can being hospitalized put you in a good condition?) after a car drove through the front window of a Starbucks on the North side of Chicago. The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, though no alcohol or other foul play is suspected in the accident. The driver was also cited for negligent driving, making an improper right turn, and lack of insurance. Oh, the car was a Lexus. Who drives a Lexus without insurance? http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-starbucks-crash-web-28-jul28,0,4165845.story

If you plan to travel to Russia, be prepared to pay through the nose for your coffee fix. According to th US company Mercer, a cup of coffee in Moscow costs the equivalent of $10.19 per cup. Mercer performs an annual cost of living survey for to help businesses manage the cost of overseas expenses and researches not just coffee, but many things including housing, transportation, clothing, food, and more. http://www.gilkatho.com.au/news/default.asp?cmd=view&articleid=689

What started as a change in coffee cups has turned into a LEED certified, environmentally friendly new building for a credit union in Middletown, New England. The member owned credit union serves gourmet coffee to its customers, and it used to do so in styrofoam cups. When the environmental impact of those disposable cups was pointed out by one of their members, they searched and switched, to a more environmentally friendly coffee cup. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that they decided to take the "green factor" into consideration when building a new building. Though the cost was slightly higher up front, management predicts they will begin to recoup their investment in seven or eight years. LEED certification for a building is no small accomplishment, but the long term environmental impact will make a world of difference. Our hats are off to Seasons Federal Credit Union, their great work, and the fact that it started with a cup of coffee. http://www.middletownpress.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=19873431&BRD=1645&PAG=461&dept_id=665530&rfi=6

Other stories that you can read online

Starbucks store closings announced. http://www.coffeeconvo.com/forum/topic/show?id=1902996%3ATopic%3A10784

Mad Blogger at Murky Coffee http://www.startribune.com/nation/25651869.html?location_refer=Family%20Entertainment

Find for the show

Coffee Sleeves from SeamsandSuch on etsy.com http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5993672&section_id=5519004

Blog posts now appear in the center of the page. I encourage every listener to create a profile on coffeeconvo.com (it's free) and start blogging about coffee. I truly believe history will show that blogging was just as significant as the invention of the printing press.

Show Changes

A new video podcast is in the production stage right now. It will be similar yet different than the audio version that you are listening to right now. We will have a separate feed for this and announce it on this show when ready.

We want to do something different with audio feedback. Use the free GrandCentral link on the front of the site at coffeeconvo.com anytime and let us know what you are drinking, roasting, whatever. Maybe you are at a cafe and enjoying an amazing mocha or Americano. Either use the button there on the website, or call 269-216-4721. Program that into your phone and call anytime to leave audio feedback. We will aggregate the comments and play them at the end of the show starting next episode.

Coffee news

http://www.deadliestbrew.com/

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080610/LIVING/806100308/1032

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,23857277-661,00.html

http://www.kare11.com/news/national/national_article.aspx?storyid=514873&catid=18

Find of the week

No it's not a paper cup: http://www.thinkgeek.com/caffeine/accessories/a3a4/

Post your best coffee story in the forum by February 8 for a chance at a free pound of coffee soecially roasted by Tony in the Behmor 1600. (No purchase necessary, void where prohibited.)

As part of the news we talked about the odor controversy at Rock City Coffee Roasters in Maine. Here is a link to their site.

Kathy noted her personal experience that Starbucks had no smell. They want to bring back the smells though.

No, Tony doesn't actually have a coffee roaster under his arm. But it sounded good at the time.
