Brunch With The Brits

 <itunes:author>Matt Cox</itunes:author>

Do you enjoy radio drama? Not just enjoy but entice yourself withgood episodic serialization? Maybe you're someone from those fair isles across the pond who remembers clicking on the wireless to listen to such gems as Inspector West and Paul Temple. Or maybe you're a comedy person who might remember that "Whose Line," was a radio 4 production way before Drew Carrie discovered it. If you are then "Brunch With The Brits," is for you!! It's hosted by a gengtleman who takes pride in his radio collection so much so he wants to share it. And it started with a dream. Not the prophetic dream one has when one falls asleep but rather a vission. But we'll get to that later. Now let's meet the host. Matt Cox is from Garden Grove California. He's been married to his wife Heather since 2004. They have two cats two dogs and an indoor outdoor orange tabby named J. Yes the letter. J. The dogs are named Buster and Dozer. Dozer is a half German Shepherd half Rotweiler and makes frequent appearances on the program. In studio which moonlights as the Cox chamber live Twitch and Spaz. Spaz is jet black Twitch a rather talkative Siamese mix who might have an opinion or two. Matt and Heather have no children. In real life Matt is a sales agent for Marriott and works from home. Heather works for her Dad. Matt'ws interests when not on air or listening to future shows include Disney, fine food reading and travel. Blind since Birth he's always had an interest in radio drama. Matt grew up in southern California and it was a chance foot surgery with nothing to do but lie there that Matt discovered BBC. Matt had always been in to otr. More on that later. Matt's degree is in broadcast journalism from Bethany College in Lindsborg Kansas. He's never let his blindness stop him for after college he served honorably in the Peace Corps in Morocco before coming back and settling down. Now I know what you're all thinking. What's all this have to do with the show? We're getting to that. In 2006 Matt began joining Robert Acosta's http://www.radiooutofthepast.org discussion group on Thursday nights. It was there he met Fred Bertelsen 1942-2008. Fred one evening happened to be playing some BBC drama. And Matt had some fun flashbacks. He had relied on BBC heavily while in Morocco for news. But he hadn'theard drama for a long time not since KCRW before it went techno played BBC drama back in the 80s. Not that techno's bad. Mrs. Cox has quite aan electronica collection but a spark had been lit. Soon in 2007 Matt was hosting a program called Cruising The Classics which took classic literature and re interpreted it in the guise of old time radio. Could a BBC program be born? It's here for you to enjoy. There are two feeds. Brunch With The Brits is our weekly look at BBC drama comedy mystery science fiction music documentary and panel shows with Matt Cox. If you would like to hear the late jFred Bertelsen he's on shows 1 through 40. A tribute is on show 43 as Fred passed unfortunately due to brain liver and lung cancer. Brunch At Bedtime will be slightly different. Here Matt may feature an audio book he's reading some old radio or Heaven forbid share some in park audio from Disneyland. So how'd this show become a podcast? Matt had always dabbled with podcasting but didn't get serious until he started listening to http://www.windowtothemagic.com and The Disney Indiana podcast at http://www.disneyindiana.com. And then when the Mortis Matine kicked in at http://www.themortismatinee.com he knew he was hooked. One word of warning. As these shows are British some may deal with more adult subjects then others. Censorship laws are different in the UK then they are here. But please enjoy and if you have questions please email brunch@london.com watch for future voice mail.u.

In this episode we continue our countdown to the Friends of The Magic Meet at Disneyland later in July. But we also look back. Oh yes there's Peter Pan and "The Navy Lark," but our second hour is dedicated to the late Michel Jackson. This isn't a King Of Pop weekend filled with phone calls and songs heard over and over again but rather a Radio 2 docmentary called "Michael Jackson's Masterpiece." It discusses Thriller and what Thriller meant and symbolized. If this is your first time listening because you've just discovered us then I hope you come back when we return to normal. But for my loyal fans this hopefully will not disappoint. Remember you can email brunch@london.com or call 206-338-5879. Please enjoy.

This week after our jaunt to Arizona we return for more Brunch action.. We begin with our mystery in which a murderer has been caught ... but is it Poirot's man? Then we revissit that little island off the coast of Portsmouth where the seamen have hatched up a skeme to get duty free smokes. Unfortunately it's during an inspection. Then we turn to Pickwick. Since he won't pay he's off to debtor's prison. This is a hard look at English debtor prison and one should be reminded that Dickens himself spent time in the Marshallsea while his father was paying off debt. Enjoy.

First off welcome to the holiday season. If you've nothing better to do this weekend and want to listen to some good live old time radio vissit http://www.radiooutofthepast.org for the third annual Christmas aka holiday marathon. Okay free plug over let's talk about this week. I finally got on Tower Of Terror and I've been meaning to talk about it at wttm and what with work being the usual postThanksgiving busy I thought I"d just say this. What the heck was I afraid of? I loved it. This week I start our Brunch with a bit of serial. Yes missspelling on purpose. We begin listening to The Spy Who Came In From The JCold this week. It's an espionage novel that's been numbered as one of the hundred greatest novels of all time. In our first episode Alec Lemus returns to England after being the station chief at Berlin's MI office. He's in for quite a surprise. I don't have a date on the episodes but the book came out in 1963. After episode 1 we have our mystery. It's our first look at Hercule Poirot. "Hercule Poirot's Christmas," by Agatha Christie takes place in 1938. This edition is from December 24 1986. Just who killed Simeon Lee? Was it his son David? Or Harry? Or George? Could it be Pilar the Spanish refugee? Was it Colnel Muster with the axe in the study? Oops wrong mystery. Enjoy. Full two hours in stereo. Questions or comments brunch@london.com and you can find me at myspace.com just look for Matt Cox it's as easy as grabing popcorn for aMortis Matine. Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Okay so this horror thing needs a little lightening up. I mean let's face it there were Santa Ana winds a plenty this week while Brunch was being put together Dsl's were not connecting or disconnecting I tested new work software and yet and yet ... Brunch is on time. And what's on tap for Brunch 38? Well we start with "Billion Dollar Baby," a profile of Alice Cooper by a leading bBritish rock jock. After an hour with Alice we listen again to "As Time Goes By," and travel back 700 years or so to check on or favorite knight and learn what happens when "The Castle," gets a satellite dish. Should be fun real quick notes check your feeds this week I've got a couple of "Bedtime Tidbits," planned only a couple because next week leading up to all hallows Eve we'll be putting on some wonderful stories for your evening firetime. Now if the weather in California would just get cold enough for firetime. On October 31 at 7 pm eastern join us at http://www.radiooutofthepast.org for a live Hallowene marathon of great old time radio which I"ll eventually put up here in case you can't come and oh yes November 25 yours truly is going to be at Disneyland along with my dear friend Eric Troup partying with Patrick Herd as in wttm's own so if for some reason you have nothing to do you live in California or can fly down to California you can come and meet the not so better half of Brunch With The Brits. Just like you could meet Fred in Chicago next summer. Now when are Fred and I planning a trip to London for a real bBrunch With The Brits? ... You know I've never thought about that but that would be fun. Gonna have to contact Jenna at Main Street Travel. ... And get a passport haven't had one in ten years Heather doesn't even have one yet poh and speaking of Heather this is her first presidential election guys and while I did rock the cradle she's not 18 she's just never voted before. Okay enought chit chat yack yack and flip flam let's refrain from hibernating and we'll all enjoy the show. In all sincerity if a Brunch London trip interests you email us and you're darn right I'll contact Jenna over at Main Street tTravel.I don't know call it Brunch With The Brits London Blitz no that'd be to just not cool funny but not cool.

There comes a time when people make mistakes. Even the Great Big Bird of Sessamee Street fame or didn't you have Big Bird Sings when you were a child. Such was the case with Matt Cox last week when he unwittingly sent Fred Brideshead 3 for the final editing. Because of this and to keep the story current you're getting two episodes this week plus a Graham Green thriller from Fred. More about these in a moment but first a poll question. We open by asking you how you feel about different lengths of the show each week or two? Reason is BBC has so many 90 minute productions out we're holding back when we're not sharing. So would you mind some 90 minute plays? If so would you still mind if the other host plays an hour or would you rather see us keep to our two hour format? The neat thing about podcasts you can pause us if you need to. Please please please email us at brunch@london.com and let us know what you think. We'll keep discussing this as the answers come in and we thank you in advance for participating. When you email let us know who you are and where you're listening. I'm loving the hits and we'd love to know more a bit more about you and your favorite BBC programs. Even if you know nothing about the BBC and are learning from us let us know. Meanwhile this week. sSorry about the latenes. And the mistake. Perhaps it was the chocolate or the champagne or the strawberries as Heather and I relaxed in the desert. But if you want to know where we were vissit http://www.marriott.com/ctdca and take a look. Anyway you'll get Brideshead 2 and 3 this week from March 16 and 23 2003 followed by Graham Green's Ministry of Fear. This was originally broadcast on July 7 1973 but Radio 4 made it in to a two part two hour drama. Don't forget to email us your thoughts on 90 minute plays and we look forward to it. Matt and Fred

And so this week we begin Brideshead Revissited. It's the story of Charles Rider and his friendship with Sebastian Flight. We look back with Charles from his time as a captain in the infantry in 1944. The story really begins in 1923 with the introduction of Charles and Sebastian. Remember this was a tv show and a recent film besides a book. As you listen pay attention to the different classes. We then spin out of this world with Fred to finish Hitchhikers and return to the little world of Don Camillo. Enjoy. Btw gang I leave for the desert on Thursday so I won't get the show until I get home. These aniversaries. Only come once a year and Mrs. Cox and I need a vacation. Don't forget to email us at brunch@london.com enjoy

Saturday Night Theater was a Radio 4 classic. And tonight's Brunch was no acception as we presented a whol hour and a half play. Remember the shot that killed Harry Lime? If you liked old time radio you do. This week we present "The Third Man," starring Ian Henri as Harry Lime and Rollo Martins being played by Philip Marlowe himself Ed Bishop or back then Edward Bishop. For those of you who don't know it's okay as "The Third Man," is what started it all. It spawned a ten episode BBC series back in the fifties after its release as a movie. It starred Joseph Cotton and Orson Wells. If you were a fan of the film you won't be disapointed with the play. Script is literally from screenplay. Enjoy. After the curtain comes down fred steps in to take us on the fourth installment of "The Bing Crosby Trail."
