Brunch With The Brits

 <itunes:author>Matt Cox</itunes:author>

Do you enjoy radio drama? Not just enjoy, but entice yourself with
good episodic serialization? Maybe you're someone from those fair
isles across the pond who remembers clicking on the wireless to listen
to such gems as "Inspector West" and "Paul Temple". Or maybe you're a
comedy person who might remember that "Whose Line Is It Anyhow," was a
Radio 4 production way before Drew Carey discovered it. If you are,
then "Brunch With The Brits" is for you!!

It's hosted by a gentleman who takes pride in his radio collection so
much so that he wants to share it. And it started with a dream. Not
the prophetic dream one has when one falls asleep but rather a vision.
But we'll get to that later. Now let's meet the host.

Matt Cox is from Garden Grove, California. Matt's interests when not
on air or listening to future shows include Disney, fine food, reading
and travel. Blind since Birth he's always had an interest in radio
drama. Matt grew up in southern California and it was by chance that
he had a foot surgery, and with nothing to do but lie there that Matt
discovered BBC. Matt had always been in to otr (old time radio).
More on that later. Matt's degree is in broadcast journalism from
Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. He's never let his blindness
stop him for after college he served honorably in the Peace Corps in
Morocco before coming back and settling down. Now I know what you're
all thinking. What's all this have to do with the show? We're
getting to that. In 2006 Matt began joining Robert Acosta's Radio Out
Of The Past (http://www.radiooutofthepast.org) discussion group on
Thursday nights. It was there he met Fred Bertelsen (1942-2008).
Fred one evening happened to be playing some BBC drama. And Matt had
some fun flashbacks. He had relied on BBC heavily while in Morocco
for news. But he hadn't heard drama for a long time. KCRW (a station
in Santa Monica, California) used to play BBC drama back in the 80s
before it went Techno in 1996. Not that techno's bad. In 2007 Matt
was hosting a program called "Cruising The Classics" which took
classic literature and re-interpreted it in the guise of old time
radio. Could a BBC program be born? It's here for you to enjoy.

Brunch With The Brits is our weekly look at BBC drama, comedy,
mystery, science fiction, music, documentary, and panel shows with
Matt Cox. If you would like to hear the late Fred Bertelsen he's on
shows 1 through 40. A tribute is on show 43 as Fred passed
unfortunately due to brain, liver, and lung cancer. So how'd this
show become a podcast? Matt had always dabbled with podcasting but
didn't get serious until he started listening to
http://www.windowtothemagic.com and The Disney Indiana podcast at
http://www.disneyindiana.com. And then when the Mortis Matinee kicked
in at http://www.themortismatinee.com he knew he was hooked. One word
of warning. As these shows are British some may deal with more adult
subjects then others. Censorship laws are different in the UK then
they are here. But please enjoy and if you have questions please
email brunch@london.com watch for future voice mail.

<itunes:summary>This is the best in BBC drama, comedy, science fiction, documentaries and panel shows, presented by a witty and knowledgeable host. We also sometimes throw in a bit of OTR (Old Time Radio)for good measure. While the Host has a tendancy to ramble, it just adds to the fun.</itunes:summary>

This week is kind of different at the brunch studios. First we listen to a big band program from 1936 as Henry Hall entertains with Christmas and other dance tunes. Then we return to our naval draft and see what happens when a sea lord comes to inspect them. Then the meat of the brunch. It's Christmas in the UK and we'll begin our own celebrations by seeing what goes on at the UK pavillion. Joining Matt for this lively festive discussion will be Scott and Tracie Morris aka the first family of Disney Indiana http://www.disneyindiana.com and Scott Viers aka the Mortis http://www.themortis.com and don't forget next week for the big 100 we'll be learning about Christmas in the UK from England.

Before we hear "A Christmas Carrol," we'll listen to our weekly dose of Navy Lark. Troutbridge has been commissioned to take guests to the South Pole. Question is does Mr. Philipps know where south is? The next two episodes contain two very different Christmas themed discussions. Enjoy.

I don't mind saying that when we end Churchill's Bodyguard this week I feel a bit emotional. A thirteen week series ... well it's a quarter of a year. The Navy Lark continues though with the episode "Johnson Finds Treasure," and then we listen to Agatha Christies Adventure of The Christmas Pudding. If you've never listened to John Moffett as Hercule then you're in for a treat. David Bales should just be finishing "The Mysterious Affair at sStyle." Enjoy and early Christmas and holiday greetings.
