    Some feedback: 1) Yes, if you would have drilled from the front side you would have not seen the mess from the presentation side 2) A different bit choice would have helped as well, the are more expensive but forstner bits work very well for this sorta operation and lastly 3) using either bit and drilled through from the presentation face a backing sacrificial piece of wood really helps to cut down on splintering breakout.
