there was an interesting show on history channel in the u.s. last evening about halloween, including prominent mention of guy fawkes

as the protestant reformation spread and the english were distancing from all things catholic (including devotion to saints and hence all saints day) bonfire night was a way to continue a seasonal celebration

since fawkes was catholic, part of his motivation for attacking the (mostly) protestant parliament, bonfire night was also a religious statement of sorts
