Jeremy Lin stole the hearts of the NBA fans this year by being a person who everybody aspired to be. Lin was a player who received no scholarship offers out of high school and was undrafted out of Harvard University. He played in D-league but in February 2012 unexpectedly led a winning streak and was promoted to the staring lineup. This generated a global following known as Linsanity and made Jeremy Lin the fifth most searched term of the year.

In number 4 spot we have The Hunger Games. The novel was released in 2008 and received mostly positive feedback from major reviewers and authors. The movie based on the novel was released this year and earned $67.3 million setting records for opening day and opening weekend for a non-sequel.

It was time to elect a president again and this made Election 2012 number 3 most searched term of the year. Barack Obama was re-elected president, but the path to that was full of obstacles. Tax increases, foreign policy and employment were all hot topics which made this election extremely hard to predict.

Swooping in at number two is Hurricane Sandy. The hurricane devastated portions of Caribbean, mid-atlantic and northeastern United States. Sandy was classified as category 2 sort at the peak of its intensity and has caused $65 billion in damaged and took 253 lives in seven countries.

And the number one most searched term of the year is… Whitney Houston. On february 11th of this year, Houston was found dead in her guest room at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills California. The toxicology reports showed that the famous singer had accidentally drowned in a bathtub due do the effects of illegal substances.
