The Indecent

Born and bred in one of the rock ‘n’ roll capitals of the world, The Indecent is the next New York City band to keep your eye on. These 16-year-olds mix intelligent songwriting, thought-provoking lyrics, downtown NYC attitude, and raw rock ‘n’ roll angst into a fresh and unique post-millennium sound. Resurrecting the spirit, smarts, and soul of rock’s greatest underground eras, this quartet is a lethal combination of streetwise savvy, youthful expression, and maturity beyond their years.

Three-quarters of The Indecent made their debut on May 28, 1994, in the form of triplets Bo, Emily, and Madeline Brout. While most siblings are content to gather around the TV and get their musical chops from Rock Band, this one boy-two girl trio were thirsting for the real deal. They each picked their poison of instrument, and got down to business.

Consuming a hearty blend of Nirvana, The Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, and other classic rock and punk in their formative years has resulted in a serious, toothy, and dynamic brand of rock’n’roll, steeped in classic NYC flavor.

With Bo churning out dirty, dank riffs on his guitar, Maddy bringing a meaty low-end on her bass, and Emily channeling the vocalists of riot grrl times gone by, all the threesome needed was a drummer. Enter Nicholas Burrows, a 15-year-old skin-pounder who rains down rhythms at hyper velocity. The son of drummer Jeff Burrows, of Canadian multi-platinum rock act The Tea Party and Crash Karma, Nicholas was exactly what was needed to cement the line-up.

It was in 2008 that the band caught the attention of producers Tim Sommer (who has worked with Brian Eno, Michael Stipe, and Maroon 5) and Stuart Chatwood (also of The Tea Party). “What appealed to me is that they didn’t sound or look like kids playing a rock band in a TV movie,” says Sommer, a former Senior VP of A&R at Atlantic Records who signed Hootie & The Blowfish and Duncan Sheik. “Each of them took their craft very seriously, and tore into their playing with impressive enthusiasm and precision. They are a real rock band, [with] strong opinions.”

The Indecent is currently brewing up a buzz at bars and clubs in the tri-state area. Recording of their soon-to-be-released CD Her Screwed Up Head began in the fall of 2009 with Sommer and engineer/mixer Mark Dearnley (AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Paul McCartney, Motorhead, The Damned). Meanwhile, these iPod generation musicians will, once again, echo music before their time, when their single “25 Steps,” packaged with a cover of Hawkwind’s “Silver Machine” is released on vinyl.
