Episode #40 – 2009 Fall Music And Movie Review
Show Opening
TRACK – TAB the Band – Bought And Sold
Late Night Wars - Jimmy Fallon took Conan’s spot and he’s pretty damn funny. Conan is occasionally beating Letterman’s ass. You know Letterman, that angry old guy who used to be funny.
La Musica
Girl in a Coma – “Baby Boy” (J. Mascis would be jealous) from Trio B.C. Joan Jett, Dave Navarro. Omar and Jeff (Mars Volta) are all thanked in their liner notes (Joan Jett heads their label). Trio B.C. is entirely refreshing and nostalgic at once. They are definitely hitting their Smiths vibe; much rockier than their last. “Slaughter Lane” has a blowout ending worthy of any emo band. “Trail” is an epic – this is what you hear as you drive your T-Bird over the cliff – on Mars.
Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange – does music get any cooler or more fun than this? What soul this guy has – Disappearing Ink and Famous Last Words are better than the 1st song we pumped last show.
Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest, with the catchy "Two Weeks" - perhaps this year's best single and video (be creeped out and enchanted here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjecYugTbIQ
TRACK – Atlas Sound (Feat. Noah Lennox) - Walkabout
Spoon's new EP Got Nuffin, just Britt Daniel letting you know he's still kickin' it.
Is the new Mew a flop? I’m beginning to understand departed bassist Johan Wohlert’s input as part of their sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kz0aVur1F2A
TRACK – Mew – Repeaterbeater
L a Musica (continued)
Dodos – Fables song (nice post-Beatles McCartney song) http://www.frenchkissrecords.com/audio/dodos/fables.mp3 beautiful tune - so much sunnier than any from their last album. Listen to their entire album at http://timetodie.net/ Some really cool shit there – really fleshing out their sound
TRACK – The Dodos - Fables
Frank Black’s got a great Love and Rockets cover “All In My Mind” on a new compilation, New Tales to Tell, which also includes songs from Flaming Lips and A Place To Bury Strangers.
A Place To Bury Strangers’ Exploding Head is out. And they’re touring this fall with Darker My Love.
TRACK – Phoenix - 1901
Hollywood Minute – Looking Back
Funny People with Adam Sandler and (surprise!) Seth Rogen. Interestingly: yes it’s another Judd Apatow project but did you know Adam and Judd were roommates in college? This is the first film where they are both involved as primary players. Includes all of the usual suspects but also adds a ton of modern comedians. Was funny as hell and has a rather dark premise: http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi4124967449/
The Hangover the funniest movie of the year. Todd Philips (Old School, Starsky & Hutch) is a genius. Ed Helms (The Office) and Zach Galifinakis make the movie. Bradley Cooper’s kind of a tool.
Holius Shitticus. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince officially the record-holder for biggest opening ever – nearly $400 million in five days.
District 9 from Peter Jackson is pretty interesting.( http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi3453485593/ )
