The Masthead with Marie Claire Bold Beautiful Makeup and "Running in Heels"

Spring's brilliant fashion calls for the most daring shades — and the attitude to match. Here is what you should look for:

THE BOTTOM LINE

An easy update for kohl-lined eyes? Flip it. As seen on the Matthew Williamson runway for spring, this edgy approach adds modern to the classic. Makeup artist Ashley Ward , who created the look here, recommends using kohl liner to create softer edges. She balances the intense eye with nude lipstick and coral powder on the cheeks and forehead. And keep shimmer to a minimum: "If you go too iridescent, it looks clownish," she explains. "A matte finish makes the look more powerful."

RED AND GORGEOUS

50s glamour meets all-American girl in this fresh-face, red-lip combo. Notes Ward, "It's the startling beauty of a prom queen who requires very little makeup." All you need: apricot blush to warm up the skin and a sweep of opalescent eyeshadow. For the lips, start with an red-orange liner, then smooth on a creamy lipstick.

BLUE INSPIRATION

"This look is for the woman who is all about having fun," says makeup artist Ashley Ward. This look was inspired by Gucci's sping fashion show. Here, Ward started with liner: a black liquid first to define the shape, followed by a kohl pencil and colored shadow to add texture. When selecting a shade of turquoise, consider your skin tone: "On most people, I try to avoid yellowish shades because they make the skin look sallow. Pale skin types benefit from cooler blues that give the look more of a smoldering quality."
