Constitutional republic is probably the right naming for the form of government in the US. Republic comes from the Latin "res publica", which can be interpreted in various ways, but usually is understood to mean "matter of the public", meaning a form of government in which the public is involved in some form or another.
Quite different from a parliamentary democracy.

you are right about Gordon Brown trying to shine in O's limelight etc. It looks like UK's economy slides further into meltdown and short period when Gordon Brown could pretend that situation is improving - is over. I can't understand how can't Brits don't see that Gordon Brown was chancellor responsible for economy while Blair was PM so this whole situation with economy of UK is Gordon Brown's fault in first place. I wish that Blair could be PM still - at least Blair was elected by people and Gordon Brown just took over PM by bullying Blair.
Regarding Obama: let's see what he will do in area of missile defense shield near border of Russia - if he will cancel it, then it will mean that there is real change, but if he will keep it then he is exactly the same as Goerge W Bush .
