You keep saying that Guildford is a suburb of Surrey. It isn't. Surrey is a county and Guildford is its county town. Suburbs are residential areas on the outskirts of a town or city. Guildford has suburbs, but is not itself a suburb.

Dear Adam, Podfather; Fergus here. Love the shows. Please produce pre-recorded mp3 podcasts! This live-thing doesn't really have the strength that your well prepared productions, in my personal humble opinion. And global warming; it's a hoax and it makes Nobel turn in his grave, actually. But any selfconsious big ego that ever got a Nobelprice is a globalist brainwashed follower of the system, anyway. Just like Gore is a pedestrian, a puppet, used by the elite to brainwash the masses. Don't put too much time in these fake hoaxes. Details matter, but it's the overview that gives a realistic view on where we're going. It's over. Fascist global government is at our doorsteps, it's 1 minute before twelve. It'll make Lenin look like a muppet! No individual running things and being presented as a messiah, but a European ugly group of satanists (owl worshipping Bohemian Grove visitors); just like John Lennon said allready in the 1980's: "we are being ran by maniacs!" It's non-stop, brainwashing bullshit on media. Turn off your radio's and television, people! Enjoy what you have. It'll be over soon. And maybe, just maybe there is a God and this is the time the book of Revelations is talking about. Let's hope so. And if so, maybe the october 14 hype actually was some heavenly goodguy's watching over us, here at the end of times. Who knows. But we're entering really devastating genocidal dark ages, starting in januari '09 allready (Obama inauguration, all kind of signals comming through from Colin Powel and guy's like that "something terrible is going to happen arround the 20th of januari" don't forget that!). Very conveniant too: big (huge) happening that 'll make 9/11 look like a fart. Like I said: enjoy freedom while it lasts. Could be over in a blink of the eye.
"They Work 4 us" is out of date; They're checking out!
Take care of yourself and yours truely,
Fergus
I'd love to call some time, but destroyed my cellphone because it's lack of memory caused not knowing the word cranky (chagrijnig) for the too maniest time so I smashed it to the wall! Sorry (lol). Skype perhaps?

Adam, please stop confusing us by linking everything to everything and lumping all arguments together. Let's break this issue down into manageable bits:
1) One can debate whether Global Warming is happening or not. Fact is that 2008 will be in the Top 10 warmest years, even though 2008 does not seem to be as warm as some of the previous years. This was predicted already earlier in the year, because of the La Niña effect and the low intensity of solar spots. So, don't blame scientists for it suddenly being colder, because it was known that that would happen. Check your favourite internet sources, it's all there.
2) Looking out of your window in Guildford and looking at the current weather does not give you any basis for debunking any global warming trends. The theory says that some parts of the globe will get colder, but the global average temperature will rise. For instance, here in Helsinki we have not had any White Christmases for a while now, and the Gulf of Finland has not frozen over like it used to (currently end of Jan or not at all, vs end Nov early Dec earlier). I myself can see a big difference between 1995 when I came here and today's situation.
3) One article by one columnist editor of the Daily Telegraph about a couple of events in 2008 does not constitute the scientific proof that Global Warming is not happening, nor that carbon dioxide oil would not have anything to do with it. You could call it a Weak Signal at most, but you cannot present it as "global warming being disproven". That is a very populistic approach.
4) Let's assume for the sake of argument that Global Warming is taking place. Of course one can debate whether it is because of greenhouse gases or not. Carbon dioxide is just one of the greenhouse gases. I agree with you that there is too much focus on carbon dioxide alone, and that Carbon Credits are totally stupid, because we are paying taxes already. If we could somehow be guaranteed that Carbon Credits would be one-to-one invested in local projects that would result in the development of alternative energy sources, or would result in more trees being planted (old trees are useless, as they are carbon dioxide neutral, they no longer absorb carbon dioxide), then it would be Ok. I guess nobody trusts our governments or private corporations to provide that kind of transparent guarantee.
5) Underestimating any potential Global Warming trends can be dangerous, as indeed it may lead to unexpected events boosting the trend. A local example again: because the Gulf of Finland does not freeze over anymore the temperature rise is greater here, as the warmer water keeps the air temperature higher than it would have been if the sea would have frozen over. Another example is the melting permafrost which causes release of large amounts of methane into the atmosphere, thereby strengthening any effect greenhouse gases may have.
6) Whatever the case, in 14,959 days the Earth will run out of oil. This is roughly 41 years. Source: http://www.poodwaddle.com/worldclock.swf. Some people say the problem will solve itself in 41 years.... For sure that solution will be less elegant than if we take action today.
7) We need to start to invest more seriously in developing alternatives to get rid of our addiction to oil. A decreasing oil price is not helping here. I am suspecting that the oil price is being kept artificially low as to make it unattractive to develop alternatives. 41 years is not a lot of time to create alternatives that can be used on a global scale to replace oil, at sustainable cost levels.
I think they way you are approaching the discussion now is not helping people to understand the real problem, and you are actually making the same mistake as "the other side", combining issues and arguments that are not necessarily related.
I would much rather like to see the discussion being held in two separate streams:
1) Carbon credits as a stupid new taxation system, irrespective of Global Warming being caused by carbon dioxide or not. I agree that it is not the way to go, unless I myself can control and check how the money is being spent on the development of alternative energy sources locally, or is being invested in projects restoring forests (not only good against carbon dioxide; also good for one's physical and mental health...);
2) How to ensure that proper investments in alternative energy sources continue to take place in the current environment of low oil prices? Oil prices will go up again at some point in the future and then it might be too late to start any serious development activities.

I agree with you on carbon credits and on the whole global warming. It is waste of money and it exasberates situation. However many politicians still are deluded so more convincing is needed.
