I was just reviewing the latest additions to the PMN and I was lead down a fascinating path, this track caught my eye.

That track had Jim Guittard 's bio, which as well as telling me that Jim is from Bulgaria, and that It's just him, a do-it-yourselfer. Loving Psychedelic and folk-rock music with 12-string Rickenbacker. it led me to a goldmine of stuff that I am so surprised that I haven't discovered before, so I must tank jim for that. Maybe this is no news to you, but it came as shock to me. A bit of history for those that don't know, Creative Commons is a licensing scheme to define and enable use of music and other IP by others while not depriving the creator of their rights. I am a great supporter of the CC principle, although the license is still being tested in various court cases and was recently updated to version 3, I hope that it becomes as pervasive and trustable as GNU has become for software

The gem that I was handed was a link to a site called ccMixter - Welcome to ccMixter , a site that is part of CC that actively encourages the dissection and re-building of music and song, which I see as promoting the creativity of future generations and rather than forcing them to choose from becoming a tied up artist being beaten with a stick or relenting and being a meer passive consumer of corporate owned intellectual product generated by those same shackled artists.

So this inspiration leads me to the intention that this podcast become the first of incidental mini-series that will highlight some of the benefits of the Creative Commons principle. Having followed the Jim Guittard link from the PMN to Ccmixter and looking around I found a lot of buzz around an artist called Shannon Hurley , then looking back on the PMN I see Shannon had loaded tracks onto the PMN last October, and somehow I missed them, although if I had listened to http://thisrealitypodcast.com/ I wouldn't have for long. One of the strengths of the PMN is the large number of tracks, but this is also a difficulty, but podcasters are there to address this challenge.

So I discover Shannon Hurley who goes under shannonsongs on ccMixter, note that shannonsongs.com is the site of another singer all together.

And I find her on the PMN and I pick a track called “We Are In Love” and it goes like this on the Mevio release.

This is a lovely production, but could it be better? well of course better is just a subjective thing, depending on the ear, the brain, and the mood of the listener, but with the CC attribution non-commercial use license anyone with the interest, and maybe the skill, (it does help) can take the parts kindly supplied as I show here:

MUSIC: PLAY Parts

You take these parts and can add, blend, mix and remix to achieve something that suits your taste, mood or whatever. CCMixter and Shannon encourage you to upload the new mix back to the Ccmixter site, but all you are required by the license to do is Attribute the parts used to Shannon herself, and you must ask for separate permission if you wish to the production for commercial purposes. One other thing you must do is to make sure others that get your production content know that your work contains parts licensed using the CC license, include a link to the license text or the text itself.

So you may say, “what could I do with those tracks”. Well Adam Curry often plays tracks from a site called mashuptown, where various tracks with the same BPM are mixed to create something new, in the old vinyl record days there was a UK series on compilations based on the same idea of common Beats Per Minute called “Stars on 45”, the 45 coming from the rpm speed of the vinyl hit single.

From the Ccmixter site there were 28 mixes listed when I looked and I checked out a couple for you, from dgeis and Doghouse

Doghouse metaphorically takes Shannon to a casino on the Las Vegas strip, late at night they relax in the lounge bar with a martini.
