Hmm, on further inspection of the Lisbon Treaty is states that the Union shall accede to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. Which will in fact make the ECHR binding to the EU.
What I don't get is that both the Charter, which I have no problems with, and the ECHR, which I do have a problem with, are both in the Treaty. They are so similar its confusing...

Adam, the text you are quoting in your show is the European Convention on Human Rights and not the Charted of Fundamental Rights. The Charted is based on the ECHR, but it doesn't have the sections you discribe. The ECHR is allready binding for the individual member states of the EU Council (not the EU Union!).

I live in Ireland and have a vote next week, so I listened carefully to this alarming episode.
However, I have downloaded the treaty as you suggested and cannot find the sections to which you referred. Can you give better references?

I should also point out that while your arguments are strong reasons for voting against the treaty, they have not been employed by the "No" campaigners here. Most of the arguments I have heard against the treaty have turned out to be lies or just irrelevant.

This is absolutely outrageous! Could you summarize this in a blog post? It's easier to spread the word if I can link to something text-based.
