Townsfolk Talk
"You're a freak" said little Annie. The little man with the perfectly circular glasses stared at her from behind the counter. He looked like an old school teacher, one with a particularly sour face. His face looked like one that haven't seen a smile in a long time. He didn't like little kids in particular, and they, in their turn, didn't like him either. "Have you lost your mommy?" he asked in a tone that suggested she should be attached to her parent with a collar like a dog. Little Annie didn't seem to be deterred from this. In fact, her smile broadened and became even more mischievous. "You're a freak, and I'm going to prove it", she said, "You should be locked somewhere to keep the citizens of this city safe." "You talk a few sizes above your age", remarked one of the costumers, "Do you know what you are saying?" "Don't listen to her, she is just a disgruntled kid", said the shopkeeper from behind his counter, "One who has nothing to do, but paster the innocent". "Oh, you're nothing but innocent" said a woman in the crowd, "We know about your trips to the woods in the middle of the night. What is it that you do there?" "Non of your business" murmured the shopkeeper.
Later, when he locked his shop, the low murmur of townsfolk seemed to hang around in the air. He eyed the town suspiciously through his glasses, but the streets seemed to be deserted. He went down to the store basement where he lived. He had a small living room and another, even smaller room where he slept, but he wasn't going to sleep tonight. He knew Natalie was waiting him. He packed out some food and headed out towards the woods.
Little Annie followed the shopkeeper slowly and silently. It wasn't easy. Every once in a while he turned around, as if afraid of being caught. At his shop, he always seemed menacing and spiteful. Now he just seemed frightened. At last, he reached his destination, a small cabin in the middle of the woods. He knocked the cabin door three times. A young and beautiful woman opened it and smiled at him. He smiled back. Little Annie never seen him smile. He looked almost handsome. The man entered the cabin, and the woman looked around cautiously, then closed the door after him. Annie moved closer and picked at the window. They where sitting on a couch, talking. She could hear muffled words through the window. "You should stop coming here," Natalie was saying, "It is too dangerous. People are getting suspicious. If they would catch us, both of us would be roasted." The man just looked at her sadly. "Look at what we've come to. You have to hide here in the middle of nowhere, and I have to sneak out in the middle of the night just to see you. if only things where different." "Those are dangerous times" answered Natalie "they would burn you at the stake for the wrong thing at the wrong time. They would have killed me if you wouldn't have bribed the jailer."
Little Annie have heard enough. She was off to call the townsfolk. In her rush to call them, she toppled over a little box that was standing beside the wall. In hearing the noise, the couple rushed outside just in time to see little Annie disappearing into the woods. "I knew this day would come" said Natalie, "We should leave this place and go someplace where we are not known. We have nothing but our clothes, not even choice" she said. By the time the townsfolk got there, both Natalie and the shopkeeper disappeared without a trace.
