Running post

Went for a good run today, with a distance/time goal, instead of HR.  I've been running slowly with the HR goal on my Garmin 305, so I set up a quicky goal of 5.33 miles, and some arbitrary time goal I knew I could destroy.  Settled in at a 10:11 pace.  Well, it wasn't settled at all, as I watched my course on the computer.  I was speeding up, slowing down, HR all over the place!  But I liked it.  Temp was 17 F, and it took 2 miles just to get over being freezing.  When it was over I sweated through everything I had on, and my hat is still wet 2-1/2 hours later!  Thinking of changing my weekly plan, from 3 5-mile runs to 2 shorter runs and 1 long run each week, gradually increasing that run.  Maybe next week I'll do 6.  August 1 is the Yankee Homecoming 10-mile race, and I want to do that.  If that goes well (or if the training goes well) I may look at the world wide half-marathon challenge in October.  That would be impressive to me!

Still for no one

My last post was about riding, so this one is about running.  I run far more than I ride, if not only because it's dead winter now.  Started listening to phedippidations, a goofly little podcast about running, and then I started being motivated to run.  Now I do 4- or 5-mile runs 3 times a week, and set an annual goal of running the 10-mile road race at the Yankee Homecoming in Newburyport in August.  I like it!  My resting HR is way down, my AHR is good while running, and I hope to max the APFT this year.  See you at the finish line!

A sweet road ride

Trek 1200, aluminum Road bike.  RS100 Crankset, Deore LX rear derailleur, 105 front derailleur (all Shimano).  Look pedals, Nike shoes.  Heart rate monitor and bike computer (Performance).  Bike shorts, racing jersey, Oakley glasses, wrap-a-round.  Set off for a 10-mile route: Rowley, Byfield, Georgetown, across I-95 to Rowley and home.  HR averaging around 145.  Gave blood yesterday, so no hard exertion today.  My first road ride for 2 YEARS!  Feels good.  I instinctively find the easy gears, switching with the slightest incline or decline.  My legs pull over the top of the cranks, getting the most efficient use of the muscles on every stroke.  Just like riding a bike.

But, wait.  Where's the Tenney St. bridge?  I see rt. 133 and its bridge, but no access to Tenney.  Turn north into a G'Town neighborhood, swanky, all new.  Goes nowhere.  Take a bike/pedestrian path into an older neighborhood, and I'm back on Main street, retracing my route.  No Tenney St.  Crap!  There's the Jewett St. bridge, so I take it, on familiar territory again.  Turn onto Tenney from the Rowley side, but the bridge is farther than I'd like, so I turn around and head home.  15 miles.  1 hour (no exertion, remember?).  Kept my hr in the middle zone.  Sweating.  I feel good.  Nice ride: have to do this more.Cool

After a morning watching the Boston Marathon, including the winners of the mens and womens wheelchair and elite races, I was motivated to go out in the cold and rain to run my paltry 2 miles.  It felt good to get out there, especially considering 23,000 people could do it in colder and rainier conditions in Boston for 24.2 more miles than I did.  Good way to start April vacation!

BTW- song crisis solved: we're doing Get It On, and they're playing it great!
