When Star Trek: The Next Generation was first announced, I was in high-school taking french. My mother and I had a joke about Bones and his exclamations needing to be translated for "Jean-Luc Picard"... "Vous écoutez moi, vous Vulcan avec les oreilles pointues!", "Jean-Luc! Son dangereux!" and "Mon dieu Jean-Luc! Je suis un docteur - pas un pantomime!"
Little did we know the foundation of our joke was laid much earlier...
When we were growing up, my sister and I watched the strange music videos that were played at like 3AM on early cable and even broadcast TV. We were exposed to lots of music we would have never heard otherwise. At the time (early 80s), there just weren't many music videos to be had so it seemed any band with a video got played as filler during these late night shows.
Some of the songs still get the occasional listen from me such as "Skin Tight" by Cameo. But, there were also the "art" songs. These were usually minimalist bands that were trying to push music into a modern art type of feel. Grace Jones was played. Art of Noise was played. I recently found one that time had almost forgotten: Trio. These guys were the kings of minimal. How minimal? You judge (and laugh).
